capital expenditure in agriculture. However, a larger proportion, nearly 23·7 per<br />
cent, of the amount borrowed during the year was for long-term agricultural purposes.<br />
But a very large proportion, more than half, of the amount borrowed during the<br />
year was for short-term consumption purposes. In addition, a certain amount was<br />
borrowed for long-term consumption purposes, that is to say, for family needs of a<br />
long-term character, such as construction and repairs of residential houses. If we<br />
put together the short-term and the long-term consumption purposes, they account<br />
for nearly two-thirds of the borrowing during the year.<br />
