Troubleshooting the Curato
Learning Objec-ves:
Scope of Training
o Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with the A.C. Power Adapter.
o Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with the Internal BaAery.
o Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with System Leaks and the Leak
Alarm.
o Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with Blockages and the Full
Canister Alarm.
A.C. Adapter Issues
Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with the A.C. Adapter.
o Problems with the adapter
No power from the plug-‐in A.C. Adapter.
Outlet is switched and is not on.
Device not plugged in, or outlet worn.
Plug module – not firmly seated in adapter.
o Problems with the power cord/connector
Broken wire(s).
Broken coaxial connector.
Bad solder joint(s).
Troubleshoo-ng Steps:
A.C. Adapter Issues
1. Plug the A.C. adapter into a known-‐good outlet.
2. Verify green LED on the adapter is lit.
3. If LED is not lit, check security of the plug module and/or try another
outlet. Replace as necessary.
4. IF green LED is lit, plug cable into device.
5. Verify green LED on the device is lit.
6. If green LED is not lit, replace A.C. adapter and repeat test.
Battery Issues
Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with the Internal
BaAery
o To “Quick Check” the baAery in a device that is completely
discharged perform the following steps:
1. Connect device to an A.C. Adapter and plug it in to an outlet.
2. Verify that the amber Charging LED is lit. If Charging LED does not
light – return device for service.
3. Check Charging LED a]er approximately 1 hour. If LED is off – return
device for service.
4. Check Charging LED a]er approximately 3.5 hours, if LED is s-ll on –
return device for service.
Leak Alarm
Leak Alarm will trigger if > 1.2 Liters of air are entering the
pump every minute (LPM) for 3 minutes +/-‐ 30 seconds.
Yellow pressure selec-on buAon will flash when system
pressure is less than 90% of target pressure.
A leak alarm and flashing yellow buAon will normally occur
together (if the leak is large enough that pressure cannot be
maintained), however, this is not always the case!
The leak must be in one of three places:
o Dressing/Tubing
o Canister – Always have a new canister for troubleshoo-ng!!
o Device
Leak Alarm
When a system is working correctly, you will no-ce the
following:
o Dressing appears to be “sucked down” and sealed.
o No “hissing” sound coming from dressing or SpeedConnect.
o Yellow pressure selec-on buAon lit solidly.
o Device is very quiet – pump “burps” less than 4 -mes per second
(less than 2 is preferred).
o There are no alarms.
Troubleshoo-ng Steps:
Leak Alarm
1. Engage tubing clamp – does the pump “sound” change? Is the
pump slowing down? Does the alarm resolve? If the alarm
resolves, the problem is in the tubing/dressing.
2. If alarm does not resolve, remove canister and replace with a
known-‐good canister. Place your gloved finger over the Pa-ent
port crea-ng a seal, does the alarm resolve? If it does, the
problem is in the canister. Replace canister and re-‐check!
3. If alarm s-ll does not resolve, problem must be internal to device.
Replace device and re-‐check!
Leak Alarm
Is it possible for the dressing to be completely unsealed or
off the pa-ent – with no flashing pressure selec-on light and
no leak alarm?
o Absolutely! If one or more of the following has occurred:
Tubing clamp closed.
Blockage in tubing.
Blockage in dressing.
Hole for SpeedConnect closed on itself (caregiver cut a slit instead of a
hole).
Device failure (unlikely but possible)
Troubleshoo-ng Steps:
Leak Alarm
1. If a animal caretaker/veterinary technician complains that the unit
is not alarming when the dressing is separated from the pa-ent,
instruct them to remove the suc-on tubing from canister and
allow unit to run for 3 minutes +/-‐ 30 seconds. If the unit alarms
the problem is with the tubing/dressing (probably a blockage).
2. If there is no alarm, remove canister and allow unit to run without
any canister installed. If the unit alarms the problem is with the
canister.
3. No alarm means there could be an issue with the device itself.
Return for service.
Full Canister Alarm
Iden-fying and Correc-ng Problems with Blockages and the
Full Canister Alarm.
o When the canister is full of fluid, the device will provide an audible
and visual “Canister Full” Alarm a]er 1 minute.
o Normally the caregiver would replace the canister at this point,
restart the device and the alarm will clear.
o It is possible to have a full canister alarm even if the canister is not
full or has liAle to no exudate inside:
The canister may have been -pped on its side – welng the porous polymer filter and
causing the alarm.
The canister could be ¾ full and le] unchanged for several days – the filter can wick
moisture up over -me causing the alarm.
The internal protec-ve filter could be blocked due to previous fluid ingress causing the
alarm.
Troubleshoo-ng steps:
Full Canister Alarm
1. Replace canister with a known-‐good canister – does the alarm
condi-on resolve? If it does, the new canister may have an
internal blockage.
2. If the alarm does not resolve, remove canister and allow pump to
run for three minutes – there should be a leak alarm. If a Full-‐
Canister Alarm occurs, the problem is most likely a blockage of the
internal protec-on filter – return device for service.
• Hint: If the pump motor does not run with the canister removed,
this indicates an internal problem – return device for service!
