MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

In 2006, Alzheimer’s Services was diligent in striving to fulfill our vision of
making a significant difference in the lives of those coping with Alzheimer’s. To
that end, we accomplished some key goals:
• Achieved the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations “Standards
for Excellence” Certification. The Standards for Excellence program sets benchmarks
beyond the minimum legal requirements of how nonprofits should operate providing
accountability to both funders and those the nonprofit serves.
• Formed a partnership with the Junior League of Baton Rouge to create “TLC For
Caregivers.” These socials offer families an opportunity to relax and have fun.
• Received grants to initiate funding of the Alzheimer’s Services Respite Center
scheduled to open in mid-2007.
• Increased membership in the Rosemary Society by 21 members and $110,000 (over
a five year period).
You will read more about each of these key goals later in this Annual Report.
I would like to point out that Alzheimer’s Services is not affiliated with a national
organization nor are we a United Way agency, therefore, every dollar raised stays
here in our community to help the many families coping with Alzheimer's disease or
a related disorder. As you review this report, you will see that the majority of those
dollars are directed into program services versus management expenses.
I ask that each of you become an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Services by helping us
increase community awareness about the education and support services we provide
to memory impaired individuals, as well as caregivers and professionals. Thank you for
your interest and your assistance in helping Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area
fulfill this mission.

The mission of Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area is to
provide education and support services to memory impaired
individuals, as well as caregivers and professionals; and to enhance
community awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
What is Alzheimer’s Disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease of the brain that
results in memory loss, impaired thinking, difficulty finding the
right word when speaking, and personality changes. During its
course, there is a continual loss of nerve cells in areas of the brain
that are crucial to memory and other mental functions.
Core Programs & Services
• HelpLine telephone support for disease information, caregiving
issues and community resources
• Quarterly newsletter with caregiving, disease and Alzheimer’s
Services event news
• Video and print Resource Library
• Caregiver Network support meetings held monthly throughout
the 10-parish area
• Education programs including monthly Lunch ‘N Learn series,
Sharing the Journey class and annual Education Conference for
professionals
• Caregiver Respite Program to assist families in covering expenses
incurred from using sitters, adult day centers and other care
programs
• Safe Return Program, an identification bracelet program to help
identify, locate and return individuals who wander from their
residence
• TLC for Caregivers social events designed for Alzheimer’s
patients to enjoy with their family

Memories in the Making Luncheon
A Sustainable Future
Alzheimer’s Services wants to ensure that
programs and services benefiting families
coping with Alzheimer’s disease are here
not only today, but also in the future. One
way we are accomplishing this goal is
through our multi-year donor programs.
The Corporate Partner program targets
local businesses who pledge to donate
a minimum of $5,000 per year for three
years.
The Rosemary Society is designed for
individuals who commit to donate a
minimum of $1,000 per year for five years.
A Challenge
At the 2006 Memories in the Making
luncheon, The Huey and Angelina Wilson
Foundation announced an exciting new
challenge grant. The Wilson Foundation
pledged to match each new Rosemary
Society member’s first year gift up to
$30,000. This would increase unrestricted
funding by $180,000 (including challenge
gift) over a five year period.
By strengthening the multi-year giving
society, Alzheimer’s Services will continue
to develop and expand programs and
services to meet the growing needs of
persons affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
As a result Alzheimer’s Services can
continue to offer families the tools they
need to help them cope.

The Respite Center
From Dream to Reality
Res • pite [res-pit]: to relieve temporarily, especially from anything distressing or trying; give an
interval of relief from.
The Dream
Sometimes dreams really do come true. Such is the case for the Alzheimer’s
Respite Center which is scheduled to open in 2007. The concept of The Respite
Center began as a solution to a recurring request from families that there be “a
place” that they could feel comfortable leaving their loved one with dementia
for a few hours a week. Ideally, these few hours of “respite” from the day-to-day
responsibilities of care giving would provide families both the opportunity and
peace of mind needed to take care of simple things like grocery shopping, going
to the doctor or sharing a few hours of fun with friends. Individuals enrolled
in The Respite Center would participate in activities based on their cognitive
abilities – for example, take a class on using the computer and internet, plant
an herb garden, take a trip to a museum or art gallery, or simply reminisce
about the “good old days”.
The Reality
Research suggests that ongoing use of respite
services helps caregivers to continue in the
care giving role and delay institutionalization
of a person with dementia, while preserving
caregiver health. Alzheimer’s Services believes
The Respite Center will offer families coping
with dementia the
break they need, plus allow them to keep their loved
one at home longer, delaying the overwhelming
expenses associated with long term care.

In 2006, over $120,000 in funding for The Respite

In 2006, the Walk/Run to Remember moved to
a new location on the LSU Campus. Over 5,000
people came out in November to raise awareness
and funds for Alzheimer’s Services.

Striving For Excellence
Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area successfully
completed the Louisiana Standards for Excellence Voluntary
Certification Program and was awarded the LANO Seal of
Excellence on October 25, 2006. Only 46 of the thousands of
registered nonprofits in the state of Louisiana have obtained
certification.
The Standards for Excellence Program aims to promote the
public’s trust in nonprofit organizations. It sets benchmarks
beyond the minimum legal requirements of how nonprofits
should operate encompassing eight areas of nonprofit
operations: mission and program, governing board,
conflicts of interest, human resources, financial and legal
accountability, openness and disclosure, fundraising and
public policy and affairs.
Alzheimer’s Services underwent an intensive peer review
process, an extensive review of operations and approval
by an independent Standards Compliance Committee.
According to Executive Director Beth Veazey, “The LANO
Standards for Excellence Program gave us the tools we
needed to evaluate current operations and set stringent
guidelines to ensure responsible and effective management
of Alzheimer’s Services now and in the future.”

Alzheimer’s
Volunteers are one of our most
valuable resources dedicating
approximately 4,000 hours of time
and talent to Alzheimer’s Services
in 2006. Each year, Alzheimer’s
Services selects Angels for
Alzheimer’s to honor volunteers who
have demonstrated exceptional
commitment to the organization.
Here is how our 2006 “Angels for
Alzheimer’s” earned their wings:
Lisa Musso has volunteered for
the annual Walk/Run to Remember
since 1996, and for the past seven
years has served on the planning
committee as Food & Beverage
Chair. Organizing food and
beverages for a crowd of 5,000 can
be an overwhelming task, but Lisa
takes it in stride and even offers to
“do it all again, next year!”
The Junior League of Baton
Rouge has truly enriched the lives
of families coping with Alzheimer’s
disease through their TLC for
Caregivers program. This series of
four social events held over a one
year period is designed for family
caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients
to take a break from their daily
care giving responsibilities and just
“have a little fun”.
