and Jack <strong>the</strong> Giant-killer, under ano<strong>the</strong>r name, will play his wellknown<br />
part. Long bef<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong> curtaiu falls it will be seen that<br />
Africans and Europeans have m<strong>or</strong>e in common than is usually<br />
suspected.<br />
The facility with which err<strong>or</strong>s can be detected makes it un-<br />
necessary f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> edit<strong>or</strong> to say m<strong>or</strong>e than a very few w<strong>or</strong>ds con-<br />
cerning <strong>the</strong> care that has been taken to give absolutely not a<br />
single sentence in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>tales</strong> that has not come <strong>from</strong> native<br />
sources. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m have been obtained <strong>from</strong> at least ten <strong>or</strong><br />
twelve individuals residing in different parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, and<br />
<strong>the</strong>y have all undergone a th<strong>or</strong>ough review by a circle <strong>of</strong> educated<br />
natives. In point <strong>of</strong> fact, <strong>the</strong>y have not only been told by natives,<br />
but <strong>the</strong>y have been copied down by natives, <strong>the</strong> different versions<br />
have been compared by natives, <strong>the</strong> type has been set by natives,<br />
and, finally, <strong>the</strong> pro<strong>of</strong> sheets have been read by natives. The<br />
notes only are <strong>the</strong> edit<strong>or</strong>'s own. He has directed <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>k <strong>of</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs, but has himself done nothing m<strong>or</strong>e than was necessary to<br />
explain <strong>the</strong> text. He hopes <strong>the</strong>ref<strong>or</strong>e that <strong>the</strong>se <strong>St<strong>or</strong>ies</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Amaxosa</strong> will be found w<strong>or</strong>thy <strong>of</strong> something m<strong>or</strong>e than a hasty<br />
perusal.<br />
