LETTER FROM ROMANIA
You had probably never experienced a miracle. let me try to make you part of the
miracle I lived through in my first free letter.
For forty years the communists tried to make us the "new breed of human being" • that is
slaves. but not the ordinary slaves one knows about from forbidden ancient history books, but
:1 new breed, the type of slave that enjoys hunger, cold, beating and fear and, to top it all, loves
lts masters. Well they succeeded, they made us a population of schizophrenics. we had the
slave's personality towards outside if we wanted 10 survive and one in the private which mostly
means vcry, very private.
I felt human for instance just while running alone in the woods. The slogan "Oricmccrs
do it in the woods" applies well to us Romanian orierucers where "it" means "feel free". I eould
hal r forget fear while reading CompasrSport for there was always the risk that "they" stopped
access to all printed mailer. The first steps in this direction were done about IWO years ago
when nil Hungarian printed mailer was forbidden access in the country,
Theil there was the risk of an interrogation about the how und why the CompossSporl,
and that ill thc cellar of the secret police. I had already gone through the ordeal of sueh an
Irucrrngution on the occasion of .onc of Per Olaf Bcngtsson's visits here about three years ago.
III spite of the fear that I had, implanted daily through more than forty years. I used rn
write to you and other "birds of a feather". And lucky I was. Just 50 kill to the south, ill the city
or Thnisoura, ihousnnds of people like me who were on the black lists of lire secret police, were
picked up during the riOIS. tortured and massacred and then thrown in a common grave. We
know the risks we run when the riots srancd here too so in case we didn't gel shot during ihc
riots we planned to run for the border. because we didn't give victory II chance. Fortunately we
were wrong and this is the miracle 1 mentioned. Considering the forces we hud to fighl ngainsr
you realise that our victory is a miracle and so great one that there's only one explanation: Got!
must have been involved. though we all know about Gorbachev, the wave of freedom through
Eastern Europe - we consider ourselves a special case. Now we arc free and find it still hard io
believe and when we do we cry. Imagine a tough 46 year-old bearded fellow weeping like a
baby on ihc streets. at home. in front of the TV. We really feel like babies. we arc new born. so
far we didn't live, we just wailed to be awakened from a bad dream.
Enthusiasm carries me away but I'm not ashamed. It's unbelievable, it is wonderful to sec
it wriuen down, to put it down.
Now everyday life calms down. there's bread as much as you want, meal, apples III be
found in the shops. The longest lines are seen in front of newspaper kiosks. It seems that we
nrc on the right way. What regards orienteering. We take it for granted iha: an independent 0federation
will be built this year and it'll apply for IOF membership. Pcrsonally 1 have already
planned to ride on my bike to several Ovcvcnts in Hungary. For those who don't know I have III
mention that I have never been in Hungary nor anywhere else, It's u bit late but 1 want to taste
freedom. meet people, make friends.
I have to thank you, Ned, for the opportunity to read Co mo ass Sp ort, one 0[' the few things
thut helped me keep my courage and sanity. I wouldn't mind if part or all or my lcue r gets
published in Comp as sSp ort , let it make "my brothers and sisters into orienteering" appreciate
hotter the freedom they take for granted.
David Cornel, Arad, Western Romania.
(This lcucr was published in the latest issue of Compassspon. Having spoken to some Romanian
orienteers competing in Czechoslovakia some years ago it was clear that they were having ;.
ORDNANCE SURVEY UPDATE
Following the report in TIO 45 on the
activities and plans for the Ordnance Survay
there have been some developments. The OS
had originally intended to move staff who had
been employed around the country to Dublin
to work on the new 1:50000 series of maps.
The people involved in the move were
unhappy with the situation as they had
homes and families in their areas and didn't
want to move. Under consideration at the
moment therefore is a scheme to establish
regional centres for the production of the
maps which might solve the problem.
Wi th the possibility of staff luy-of'Fs.
and the government embargo on recruitment
still very much in evidence the threat of
outsiders (orienteers. mountaineers) doing
survey work was not well received. In fact
what was planned was that map users w,ith
the preliminary edition of the 1:50000 series
would note errors carefully and communicate
them to the OS. The MCI (Mountaineering
Council of Ireland, fonnerly FMCI) have two
volunteers to co-ordinate reports on sheet 54
(Sllcve Blooms) and 56 (Wicklow). They arc
Tom Joyce. Acorn Lodge. Rosenatlis. Co. Laois
(0502-28669) and David Herman, 41 Mcadow
Grove. Dubli n 16 (01-98482 I). Perhaps
orienteers could contacr these if any errors
arc found?
Meanwhile the revised sheet 78
(Kenmare) and the I :25000 map of the
McGillieuddys Reeks and Killarney National
Park will be published in early May.
PROBLEM PAGE
Here's an easy one to start you off. A
hunter went out to hunt. He travelled for
several days without seeing anything but at
last came upon a bear. He saw ihc bear 100m
due south of him, The bear then moved west
for 200m, turned south for 50 m and stopped.
The hunter turned to face due south, fired and
killed the unfortunate bear. What cotour was
the bear?
ALIVE, ALIVE - 0
This year's "Be Active, Be Alive" week
is being organised by Saul Plus on behalf of
Cosp6ir from May 13 to. 20th inclusive. The
event will target the adult population and will
have walking as its main theme. It is likely
thai orienteering clubs around the country
events, perhaps in the evenings. If
your club is organising an event. why nut
publicisc it at your school. college. library or
at work? We all need new members!
One definite event is 3ROC's in Phoenix
Purk , Dublin on Thursday May 17th. 6.30 to
7.30 starts.
CANCELLED
The Lclnstcr Score Churnplonships due
to be run at Tiglin, Co. Wicklow, on Sunday
May 13th have been postponed as (a) there
arc no maps of Tiglin available and (b) ECO
who were 10 run the event arc struggling to
survive due to. members being posted
overseas, giving up orienteering altogether
or simply joining other clubs. We hope the
event will go ahead later in the year at some
suitable location.
DECLINE AND FALL
As mentioned in some previous iSSUe.
orienteering is like a large snowball which
has LO be kept rolling down the hill for it 10
grow. otherwise it will melt away. Several
clubs have melted away over the years: $Ii{;o.
Tipperary, Macrirc in Dublin. but others have
been created elsewhere. More clubs seem to
be gelling to below the critical mass which
will enable them to survive. Ict alone prosper.
however: Thomond Orienteers in LimeriCk.
Trim Oricnrccrs in Meath, Eastern Command
Oricruccrs in Dublin arc three such examples.
The wisdom of having two small open clubs
such as Curragh and Na;IS competing for
members in a small area must be questioned:
would the sport not benefit from an
amalgamation? Perhaps market forces will
decide.
MORE ROCK THAN SHAM
the 1990 Shamrock O-Ringen.
The big question was - would it be as good as last year? Could Munster oricntccrs provide
the same level of challenge as at the first Shamrock O-Ringen at Til' na Spidoigc and Bcrc
Island'! Secondly, could the weather again be as bad as on days two and three last year? The
answers were 10 be yes. yes and no.
Cork Oricntccrs, who ran days one and three. and Blackwater Valley Orienteers and
Kerry Oricntecrs who ran day 2 should be congratulated on a good job well done. The sinnuard
of the orienteering was generally high and the majority of competitors were well salrisl'icd
with the weekend. Have there ever before been so many oricntccrs from abroad at an event
here? The number from Britain alone was remarkable. while Scandinavia and Switzerland
were also represented. When it came to the prizegiving on Day 3 the visirors were seen to
dominate the senior classes while the Irish juniors took most of the titles in the under 21 ranks
The cornpcuuons wcre run on three different maps, Ros Mor and RUlhgaskig for Ihe
first and last days and Muckross for day 2. Ros M6r and Raihgaskig lire adjacent 10 lasr year's
Tir na Spidoige (let's not quibble about the spelling) while Muckross. outside Killurney. had
been used before but had been resurveyed. The previous Muckross map had been criticised ror
inaccuracy but the present map is an enormous improvement. II must be said, Ihough. iluu
while the survey accuracy of the maps could not be faulted the quality of drawing and/or
prinung still has some way to go to reach the standard required for roday's compctition. llt
least where Western Europe is concerned. Nonetheless. the production of three new maps ul
this size and complexity in areas remote from large numbers of experirnced mappers was ;1
mammoth undertaking abd Ihe maps arc a credit to the mappers.
Ros M6r was an area rather like Tir na Spidoigc. rough open with COntour detail and
marsh, but with a considerable quantity of (largely unmarked) gorse which made the running
rather a slow and painful process. Many parallel ridges meant that errors could be easily mudc
and one or two critical route choices on the longer courses had a crucial effect on the day's
results. The sun shone and conditions were perfect for orlcntccring. as was the cnsc the first
day Iast year. but would the storms come for days tWO and three? The Stan times were all lure
(from 1.00 pm on) and summer lime was still a week away, so late Finishers found themselves
pressed for lime before dusk - perhaps a bit of a gamble for the organisers from the poim or
view of safety.
The proceedings were rounded off by the lOA AGM at Inchigecla. of which there is a
report elsewhere).
Day 2 and the rains came. A grand soft day. thank God. Mind you, for Killarney in Mardi
it wasn't bad. A heavy drizzle, enough to damper the enthusiasm. but mi Id enough. The courses
varied between fast stretches of open parkland and intricately contoured sections of forest,
rather like a window event, with negligible climb except for the first few legs on the longer
courses. Tha map. as already mentioned, was a huge improvement on the earlier version.
although the contours did merge into a blur on the slopes of Torc Mountain. This would be a
great area for a relay: fast running and tricky (it was used for the 1984 Munster Relays) and
will be used again for next year's Shamrock in June. BVOC and Kerry did a very good job. bUI
evidently decided against even attempting to produce any results at all. which was a great ph)'
and the most disappointing aspect of the whole weekend, especially given thai niere was 10 he .:1
chasing start on Day 3 and we all needed our day 1 and 2 results to sec when we started. Mudl
the same thing was a feature of Day 2 last year with SO on Bere Island but the ci rCUnlSIauccs
were rather worse then.
Those who survived the "family night" ceil( in Ballingeary. which was planned to run
until 2 a.m., rose to facc Rathgaskig outside the village for Day 3. The area included rough open
similar to Ros M6r. with farm land. thick forest and the deepest. muckiest and most slurry-
7
8
covered track it bas ever been my privilege 10 run along. (If there is an outbreak of mad cow
disease among orientecrs you'll know why!). Control descriplions in 10F symbols were produced
by computer and were clearer ~an on the other days. and courses sampled all th~ av~ilab!e
terrain: forest and open. According to the event programme the map legend was in Irish ttl
deference to the fact that it is situated in a Gaeltaeht area (except for "Rathgaskig" and "Parual
photogrammeuy Ie Bush Sp6rt"). The finish was situated in the field behind the Pinkcrs'
house where a marquee provided shelter and refreshment, and prompt results and prize.giving.
Some close finishes were recorded after the three days, with Neil Conway (NUCO,) taking
the mens Elite course from Cork O's Bill Edwards by 12 seconds. Several dead heats were
recorded as a result of pacts made in the forest in the closing stages of the race, while sm a11
numbers of competitors in some classes like M35 meant that rhosc with absurdly slow limes ill
relation to the winners were still placed.
In answer to the eternal question "Was your journey really necessary?", in this case Ihe
runners would undoubtedly have voted a resounding "Yes". Well done 10 the organisers - let's
just hope that your enthusiasm holds out in the years to come and Ihal Ihe rest of the year
won't be spent simply preparing for or recovering from the Shamrock.
"The Forestry and Woodland Code" is a 32-page booklet produced by foresters foO'
relation to: landscape, water, nature conservation, roads, access, recreation and archaeclogy.
Before his departure 10 Australia Eoin Rothery felt that this code should be adopted by the 10/\
as representing a view of forest practice which we would like 10 see followed here in Ireland.
As Eoin's successor I want now 10 put this into effect.
Orienteers have intimate contact with woodlands in all seasons. Do we know good forest
management when we see it? Do we even notice when planting has been done to accentuate
the topography or to protect a water-way? In recommending this booklet to orlcniccrs I hope it
will help them, as it has helped me, to become more aware of the forests we use. To realise that
it is not all JUSt a happy accident, but Irequently the result of careful management. and on
occasion the result of bad.
The lOA is purchasing some copies of the code for distriburlon to the regions. It is
which most o{- the potential team members ran.
Result times are not yet publicly available for the Connacht
potential team members. In the case of the Cennacht Championships
this order was as {-allows: Martin, Thomas, Derek and
Michael. In the Shamrock 0 -Ringen the top place ~ent to James
Last weekend at. the Leinster Champs; Rory had the best
II windswept area of sand dunes in Co. Donegal. with heavy hail showers lashing in from
rhc Attantic: what a spot in February! Connacht certainly seem to pick the most testing weal her
for their big events, and Pinner Camp near BalJyshannon was no exception. The courses were
f:lirly short (the longest only 8.2km) but this was preferable, I think, to mere length for its
own sake. at the expense of orienteering.
Many entrants considered that in the long run it would pay them to shelter from the
weather in the stan tent. missing their stan time. to wait unti I the present shower was past.
and there was something to be said for this approach. Others braved the clements and found
that. once warmed up, it wasn't too bad, especially as for the second half of the course the wind
It is a very good area in parts. with plenty of highish sand dunes, and docs present II
challenge particularly to those who nrc new 10 this type of terrain. After having run on areas
Iike this before you get to know just how much you can get away with in the speed versus care
SMALL TEAMS
Could it be that the province hosting the event is almost guaranteed a win (with the
honourable exception of Connacht?). Very much in evidence was the fact that full teams were
110t fielded by any side: out of n possible team of 44. Ulster fielded 33. Lcinsrcr 31, Munster 17
nnd Connacht 3. The provinces, for whom the compcuuon is run. don't seem to be taking it too
seriousty. This is a pity, as it gives all classes a chance to represent their province, from the
under 12's (who in the previous days event weren't even considered compeutivc) to the over
50's. What other sport offers Ihis range?
1NTERESTING RESULTS
A quick look at the results raised a few questions, but the answers wi II depend on
whether teams were nominated in advance or whether it was simply the quickest runners
from each province that were counted. If the later is the case, can anyone explain how, for
instance, Heather Johnston didn't score 5 for Ulster as their second runner; how Peter Kernan
didn't score 4 for Leinstcr in M21A, and J.Hannell 3 for Munster, to name but a few? There may
he another day's work here!
TIMING
All unusual feature of the original results was the liming 10 tenths of a second, ill
complete contrast to the last event here two years ago when the results had to be thrown out
because of timing 'errors. In the M2111 class Brendan Delancy lind J.Hartnell both ran 66.14 bUI
were ranked in 7th and 8th place by virtue of a 0.1 second time difference in favour ul'
Delaney. According 10 the Rules, competitors are to be timed to the nearest whole elapsed
second or hundredth of a minute, depending on the clock in usc. We arc not entitled to time
them more accurately than that. Competitors finishing with the same time should be ranked
equally and listed in the order in which they started. Perhaps the series on the rules, just
started, is too late!
lOA AGM REPORT
The 1990 Annual General Meeting of the Irish Orienteering Association was held at the
hall in lnchigeela, Co. Cork on a cold. windy evening on SI. Patricks Day when anybody with
any sense would be inside with a cosy fire and a good meal in prospect. The good souls who run
the lOA on our behalf were, however, siuing on hard chairs in a draughty, unheated hall.
dealing with the dull but necessary work of an AGM.
Once again the fireworks of previous years were absent. Where was the drama. the
gerrymandering, the Borgia-like political juggling we have sometimes seen to get the favoured
candidates elected? Apathy reigned supreme.
SLIGHT SPARKLE
The only blt of sparkle came in during the motions for consideration and Constitutional
amendments. A series of amendments to the Constitution had been proposed by the Executive to
include a Coaching Officer on the lOA (once there had been a Coaching Officer, then it became
Coaching and Development, then Development), to set up a National Finance sub-commiuce and
a National Coaching sub-committee, to make the lOA Chairman ex-officio an officer of the FIOA
and to bring the composition of regional (provincial) councils more into line with the lOA
Executive's own make-up. Then it was realised that the amendments referred not to the existing
lOA constitution but to a redrafted version which nobody except the Executive had seen. This
redrafted version was adopted by the meeting, sight unseen, and then the amendments were all
accepted. What a display of trust in the lOA!
NON-COMPETITIVE JUNIORS?
Two rather more controversial mailers arose then: lOA Junior Affairs Officer Bernard
Creedon proposed that the Rules be changed to make M and W 10 and 11 classes non-competitive
in Championship events, that all finishers would be listed in the results in some order other
than by time. and tbat they would all be presented with certificates or tokens of some sort. At
other events certs or tokens need not be presented. This motion was carried but will bc subject
19
10 review and will be discussed at FIOA. As r say every year, surely the AGM is not the place 10
discuss rules cbanges?) Various parents of affected children were bemoaning the decision next
day bUI they hadn't bothered to go to the AGM themselves so they shouldn't complain. The
Connacht Championships and Interprovincial organisers anucipctcd the lOA decision by some
three weeks, listing the sub-LS's alphabetically, an unacceptable solution in the lOA's eyes ns
the Adams kids will always be at the top and the Walshes Bl the bottom ...
STUDENT REPRESENTATION
Before this a discussion on student representation on lOA had taken place, with the
third-level colleges making a case for the inclusion of a student representative on Ihe
Exccutive. Colleges are a very good recruiting ground for orienteers, we heard. The proposal
was accepted in principle. subject to third level clubs affilialing to lOA (CRTCO hadn't afrilinlcd
at the rime they ran the lntcrvarsity Championships and so the event wasn't covered by lOA
insurance. it seems). An agreement along the lines of the IOA/LSOA agreement was suggested
as a basis for future negotiations.
NON-ELECTIONS
The dearth of candidates for Executive positions meant that there were no clccrions lind
nil the officers proposed were returned unopposed. The only new face is Development Officer
Rory Morrish, from an eminent Cork orienteering family, while thc position of Administrative
Secretary filled in recent years by Brigid Flanagan stands vacant. The now post of Coaching
Officer was filled by outgoing Development Officer Frank Cunnane. A list of the officers
appears in the lOA News pages.
Finally the Mactfre Trophy for work during the previous year was presented 10 Se~n
COller (CorkO).
This AGM will go down in history as one of the dullest ever. but one at which some good
work was done. Very lillie feedback was received from orientcers in general as to how or
where they feel the sport is going in Ireland. and the meeting was poorly auendcd - the rival
uuracrlons of food and drink in Creedons' Hotel proved too strong for all but the strongestwilled.
WORLD SKI-O CHAMPS
These werc held in Skcllefled. Sweden,
WORLD CHAMPS NEWS
Remember al the World Championships
in Sweden last August where the Irish ladies
team weren't listed in the results because
they overran the 5 hour time Iimit by 9
minutes 38 seconds? Well, the IOF Technical
Committee has been rethinking the time limit
rules and may come up with a fairer system
in future.
As reported in TIO 44 the team was
disqualified. The 10F argue that they weren't
disqualified, just not listed. If their fourth
runner hadn't started by 4 hours 10 minutes
then she wouldn't have been let start and the
team would then have been disqualified. To
finish within the cutoff time the ladies would
have to beat 134% of the winners time while
the men. with a 7 hour cutoff. would only
have 10 beat 170% of their winners time.
KNOW YOUR SPORT
How many of the two or three thousand orienteering club members in the country know
that there arc Rules of Orienteering? And how many or those actually know the ru les'! In an
occasional series we will explore the labyrinths of the lOA Rules of Competition and emerge
wiser ...
RULE 2.13.7
"The controls shall each be given a unique lettering or numbering
which corresponds to that shown on the control description sheet.
These figures shall be printed to be read from the south."
The word "uniquc" in the above rule means simply Ihal no tWO controls al any event may
have the same code. There may not be two "89'''5 (as there were 81 a recent Irish
Championships). And there ought not to be any confusing similarities in codes. 11 is the
Controller'S job, in ensuring that the competitlon is fair, to sec that this rule is observed. AI 1I
Munster Championship a few years ago the Planner and the Controller both erred In allowing
IWO finish controls, one coded QR, the other OR. Some competitors. in the rush ttl finish,
punched the wrong control. The controller made up for his previous error by 1101
disqualifying runners for this natural confusion.
(Bdiior's note: any comments you may have on the intcrpretution of the rules us presented here
JOANNA HELPS YOU BREATHE MORE
EASILY
Men are bcucr at breathing than women. Or, more precisely. women are even worse at
breathing than men. A more anti-feminist statement can hardly be devised. but this one is
true.
The activity of breathing is given scant notice by orienteers. Many coaching manuals
don't even mention it. yet faulty inefficient breathing is common. I have seen some otherwise
outstanding oriemeers, especially women, pass through the finish feebly puffing in (l state 01
cxhuusrion very unlike the way "professional" athletes finish their runs.
Also, when I have been Out. I have met several ladies who have complained to me about
getting out of breath easily: I hope that my advice has helped them. In this article I will discuss
several ways in which one can improve breathing.
Unless one has a cold or a nose blocked for a different reason one should breathe
through one's nose during normal activity. The passage to the lungs this way is longer. the air
is warmed and dust is filtered Out. My generation was taught that you look stupid if your mnut h
is forever hanging open and I still think one docs - but it isn't good for thc lungs either. Only
when more air is needed for hard work or is needed quickly should one breathe through rhc
rn o ut h ,
Most people use only the top section of their lungs whether breathing through nose or
mouth and this is eventually what causes trouble. The same stale air stays in the lower part and
eventually one has to top up using shorter and shorter puffs.
The solution is very simple: One must never suck or sniff the air but use ones muscles to
enlarge the lungs and lei the air flow in. Some people think that this is a slow way of genln!;!
air in but this is a mistake. Air can only go where the pressure is lower, i.e. the volume is
enlarged. and then it flows very quickly indeed. You cannot accelerate rhls process as it is u
tundamcnrat one of physics. If you give the air only a little space ncar the top, i.e. suck. you
gain only a small amount.
There are several strong sets of muscles in the body that are capabl:c of increasing the
lung volume and here men have the advantage. For t.hem it is much easier to use the ubdominul
muscles which pull down the diaphragm and with it the lungs. and this should be their normul
way of breathing. Women have far less control of these muscles and usc them only in all
emergency. The reason is a shortage of space in a woman's abdomen so thai the diuphragu:
when fluucned puts more pressure on tile organs. When we lie down the altered distribution (>1
weight makes this easier and then we usually breathe "correctly". This explains why sleep i~
more refreshing when one lies down than when one dozes off in a chair - morcso for womcn
than for men.
Women have to use the muscles attached to the lower ribs for most effective breathing.
111 my next article I will describe these more fully and suggest some exercises that will help in
using them more regularly.
AJAX NEWS
Firstly, apoligies for the absence of AJAX news in the last few
month~.Since tbe last buUttin we have entered a new year. What is
it about the beginning of a ne~ year that brings on an attack of
nostalgia? This attack is surely an epidemic at the beginning of
a new decade. (Or the end of an old one, depending on whether you
see the glass as half-empty or half-full).As we welcme the new
decade.we look at the old one;the first 10 years (ish) of JliJAX.
AJAX Orienteering and Athletic club announced it'~ birth in
an unassuming ~otice on the back page of the LOC Newsletter in
March 1979.The founders. Carey May. Declan O'Callaghan and Eoin
Rothery stated that they felt that existing clubs had become
stale and servad little purpose. They claimed "if anything the
introduction of the new club should stimulate club rivalry", and
also that "it is not intended that AJAX become a clique fof the
best orienteers in Dublin."
Pi little over a year later this new club was well on it's
way.Carey May was National Ladies champion.Orla Cooke had given
us a taste of things to come, finishing 6th in W17 at her first
JX. Orla and Carey had been selected for the Continental Cup in
France.! also remember Faith White ringing my house to ask my
parents if I could travel but the parents put their foot down.!
would have been WlD.
May 22nd saw the introduction of "fell running" Cas it was
called then) to Ireland by PiJAX. the first held in Three Rock
whioh I also remember vividly at the tender age of 9.
1~81 sa~ AJAX firmly putting down roots on the
administrative side of orienteering with 3 representatives on the
Leinster Regional Council and another 3 on the 1.0.11..executive.
The high piont of 1982 seems to have been the Caper Ceilidh
weekend in Scotland where the tone was set for many a Scottish
orienteering event to come.
Most seem to have a memory lapse concerning 1983 - the only
information could find was the production of the Croneybyrne
map - unarguably one of the best wooded areas in Ireland.
1984 - Orla becomes Irish Ladies champ in Killary. Another
scandal as Peter Kernan joinAJAX. Also, clear in my memory from
'84 was the moving crag controversy which rocked my household for
a couple of months and exploded .at the A.G.M. that year. 1985 is
memorable for the tremendous s~ccess we had in the Irish Champs
at Glendalough. Deirdre Ni C. 1st. Eoin joint 1st, and we had a
plethora of 2nds and 3rds in junior classes.Deirdre was 3rd at
the JK. Memorable also in '85 was the Scottish 6-day in
Dithlochry, it was my first 6-da9 and overseas o-event and I was
mesmorised by the amount of orienteers in ·one place at one time.
And heres me t.hinking that AJAXwas ·the biggest club in Europe. It
certainly was one of the loudest that week.
1.9'86 - for me the orienteering started and ended at the JK
in Norwi~h. If you thought th~ Scottish was wild girl - what
happened at the JK? to tell the truth I don't really remember all
that much. I did run a B class for the first and last time, and
!inished 2nd. but knowina that I had rUITB took a lot of the
satisfaction away f~om me.- That's just a preson~l vlew. '86 also
s~w Eric Sv~n550n and Anders-Eric Olsson coming to Ireland and
telling. Irish Orienteers something I have never forgotton
FimpJificatian. Irish champs were in Slleve Croob and not only
26
did Peter Kernan win H21 ,and Orla Cooke W21. but Niall Rice M40,
Jayne McGregor W21B and Doug Corrie M21B.
1987 Irish champs were held in Glengarrif where it seem.d we
just weren't fated to win. Eoin and Peter K. were 2nd and 3rd to
Aonghus and Deirdre Ni C 3rd in ¥21A.But who will ever forget the
relay finish between Eoin and Aonghus? Seven seconds,· Eoip, seven
seconds.Upholding the AJAX name as ever a certain Aine RiLe won
W15.1987 was another odd number year which meant of course
another Scottish 6-day,thistime in Beauly. And we always thought
b~at Aonghus ~'Cleirigh was such a nice boy.The Junior Home
International was in Ireland that year and myself.Aileen and
eddie Niland Jr. were on the Irish team. Deirdre went to the
World ~hamps in France.
1988- 6eirdre again became W21 champ at the National
championships.August 1968 also saw a huge portion of the club in
Wales for the 6-day Croeso event; where we "Ielcomed Orla back
from the Southern hemisphere and Catherine back from France.
1989- Once again we won the· two major prizes at the Irish
Champs -Deirdre W21E and Peter M21E.a good club turnout at the
Shamrock O-Ringen and again at the Scottish 6-day.Orla gave AJAX
it'sbest performance yet, becoming the 1st Irish person ever to
qualify for the A-final at the World Champs in Sweden.
So now here we are in 1990. Reading back over this review of
AJAX's history.it does seem a bit of an ego-trip. However. at
least those of you out there who are worrie~ about our future as
a club can rest assured that we are still very much alive and
kicking.AJAX membersh~p comprises to a great extent of young
graduates. Unfortunately it is this section of our community who
are compelled to emigrate.Hence it is our club who are most
affected by emigration. It is to our credit that we continue
despite this and other pressures.
This 1s not an epitaph.
11 April 1990 Marc" 4th: A TIO Trophy match was held at the Sugarloaf between
GEN and SET. Unfortunately, we lost - we'll be back next year. Well done
It was a nice surprise really, (I think) to find that Fingal Orienteers were
up against Ajax in the first round of the T.1.O. trophy. After everyone in
the club asked everyone else - "did you enter us", "who entered us". Anyhow
we didn't win.
An Ode to Myles
'In Castletymon on a Sunday clear
The Fingal or~teers went so near
But all in vain for Ajax reign
And Myles has gone for his coat again
Many thanks to Setanta for a well organised event - the specsil Ajax V's Fingal
results line was much appreciated. Ajax did actually want to run against us
at Sugarloaf, but agreed to Cast1etymon, F.P. So good luck to them in the
Leinster Final. Future Events:
In order to ensure European Succeso in '91, nine membero of the Club were
despatched to the Shamrock 0' Ringen. Now that wao Floods first biggie in six
years and boy d.1d it ohow I Mind you it was hard to forget - "Frank, how long
is it since you were away on your own"? "Frank, how long was'it since you've
run a three day"? I thought the next question wae :. "Frank, how long is it
since you pi ••• missed a control? Day 1 was a great lesson in contours but we
all finished. And Trish, (if I do well, I'm 1n 3 Rock) Walsh even talked to
us - John went back to the Jacks. Day 2 otart'ed with John "Jacks" Bean 34 seconds
behind Brid "How Long" Quigley. It ended with a disco Bar in Macroom, where
Leonard found 'his kind of people' - no accounting for tastel John eventually
came out of the Jacks for Day 3 to 'pick out the road for Dublin. Says be -
"you'd be much faster not going into Cork"!! - Fran now knows which road not
to take to Dublin and John's career as a navigator is finished.
In an"eventful month Brid Quigley was 1st in Leinster W21B; Fran Lafferty and
Michael 0' Keeffe moved up to M21A; Leonard Floyd came 1st in the Inter-Provincials
The club hopes to organise a come and try it event in Newbridge Demesne, with
CASTLETIMON EVENT: The annual event at Castletimon enjoyed fine spring
weather, which mode a change from the rain of lost year. Perhaps our luck is
changing! Ajax and Fingal contested their first round of the TIO trophy match
with Ajax winning. The event was organised by Philip Brennan with help from
'the Old Reliables'. With so much clear felling, the size of usable forest is shrinking.
Still, on enjoyable day was hod by most.
NEXT EVENT: The next event to be organised by the Club will be day 1 of
the Leinster 2-Day at Croghan Kinsella, South of Woadenbrldge, Co. Wicklow
(Saturday, May 26th). Day 2 will be organised by GEN at Trooperstown and will
have 'chasing storts', I.e. start times on day 2 will depend on day 1 finish times
so first over the finish line on Sunday wins. An enjoyable two days orienteering
Is In store. Pre-entry will be available at Lelnster events on May 13th and 20th -
choice of start times.
TlO TROPHY: Setonto met GEN at Glencap on March 4th In Round 1 of the
TlO trophy match. After a tense walt for results, the pattern slowly emerged.
Setanta won team A by one point. GEN won team B by 3 points and team C
by 5 points. Team 0 saw Setonta with 6, 5 and 4 while GEN had only one Junior
finisher. GEN won team E by a close 1 point and Setanta won team F. Overall
Setanta won by a margin that was comfortable but by no means a walk over.
Our thanks to GEN for a very enjoyable match. Bobby Buckley was our Club
Captain and much credit Is due to him In judging the form of competitors, on
both sides. Our thanks also to our junior members In Wilson's Hospital,
Multlfarnhom and to Ernest Lawrence for his support. The next round will be
the Lelnster Final on a dote to be decided, but before the end of this season.
LBNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP: Well done GEN and 3ROC for very enjoyable Lelnster
Championships at Corrick and 3ROC Mountain. In the Individual Championships,
Club members won prizes In many classes and ·Lelnster Champions as follows:
Wll - Maeve O'Neill; MIO - Eoln Redmond; MI3 - Shone O'Neill (DLSO);
W45 - Moura Higgins; W50 - Faith White; MI5 - Henry Bradley (WHO);
M55 - Colin Dunlop; and M60 - Sven Kulldorff.
In the relays our M45. team come second place. Many others come to grief
omong the gorse, pits and elusive reentrants or holes In the ground of the open
area on Three Rock Mountain. The fine weather on both days would seem to
justify moving the Championships to April as opposed to the depths of winter.
SUBSCRIPTIONS: Our thanks to those who have sent their subscriptions for
