Jane Rawden<br />

We were first <strong>in</strong>troduced to Claire Necchi, who owns <strong>and</strong> runs Walton Lodge Stables <strong>in</strong> Barrow<br />

upon Soar, through a mutual friend two years ago. The last two years she helped me produce<br />

Scotgate Spectrum, who has a new home up north to cont<strong>in</strong>ue his show<strong>in</strong>g career.<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter we have brought Wolds Swift back <strong>in</strong>to work <strong>and</strong> yet aga<strong>in</strong> Claire has put her<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills wholeheartedly <strong>in</strong>to gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best from this talented little pony. Although<br />

I “don’t do dressage” - show<strong>in</strong>g is my th<strong>in</strong>g (!) - Claire helped me qualify <strong>for</strong> this year’s Top Spec<br />

NPS dressage championships (although un<strong>for</strong>tunately I couldn’t go) <strong>and</strong> we have already got our<br />

ticket <strong>for</strong> next year too! Claire has not only “waved her magic” with myself but ano<strong>the</strong>r Fell pony<br />

rider locally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region has also qualified.<br />

Above, Jane <strong>and</strong> Scotgate Spectrum<br />

It is not often you f<strong>in</strong>d someone who<br />

actually spends time watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pony, along with<br />

coach<strong>in</strong>g you to get <strong>the</strong> best from your<br />

technical rid<strong>in</strong>g. We discuss <strong>and</strong> debate<br />

all aspects from feed<strong>in</strong>g regimes to<br />

turnout, to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>er po<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> ‘way<br />

of go<strong>in</strong>g’. Just sometimes it is <strong>the</strong> people<br />

‘beh<strong>in</strong>d’ <strong>the</strong> scenes who should have a<br />

bit of <strong>the</strong> ‘limelight’ - <strong>the</strong> ribbons <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> qualify<strong>in</strong>g tickets are all seen with<br />

<strong>the</strong> rider <strong>and</strong> pony.<br />

Your next challenge, Claire, is to ensure<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r Zoe or I w<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> championship, if<br />

one Dales can do it this year, Fell ponies<br />

can do it next - no pressure !
