We were first introduced to Claire Necchi, who owns and runs Walton Lodge Stables in Barrow
upon Soar, through a mutual friend two years ago. The last two years she helped me produce
Scotgate Spectrum, who has a new home up north to continue his showing career.
Over the winter we have brought Wolds Swift back into work and yet again Claire has put her
knowledge and skills wholeheartedly into getting the best from this talented little pony. Although
I “don’t do dressage” - showing is my thing (!) - Claire helped me qualify for this year’s Top Spec
NPS dressage championships (although unfortunately I couldn’t go) and we have already got our
ticket for next year too! Claire has not only “waved her magic” with myself but another Fell pony
rider locally in the region has also qualified.

It is not often you find someone who
actually spends time watching and
understanding the pony, along with
coaching you to get the best from your
technical riding. We discuss and debate
all aspects from feeding regimes to
turnout, to the finer points of the ‘way
of going’. Just sometimes it is the people
‘behind’ the scenes who should have a
bit of the ‘limelight’ - the ribbons and
the qualifying tickets are all seen with
the rider and pony.
Your next challenge, Claire, is to ensure
either Zoe or I win the championship, if
one Dales can do it this year, Fell ponies
can do it next - no pressure !
