<strong>Whakaraka</strong><br />

<strong>Whakaraka</strong> means to bring together,to combine,to collect as is<br />

done here with this unit oftraditional pastimes and activities<br />

of Maori. Many of the Maori pastimes and games of pre-<br />

European times have been lost through time. Those tha t have survived<br />

closely resemble pastimes of other cultures suc h as potaka (spinning tops)<br />

and whai (string games). In former times Maori traditionally participated<br />

in pastimes a t night or in inter vals betw een work, depending on the season.<br />

During the periods of crop planting and harvesting,there was little<br />

leisure time.Mythical pakiwaitara were commonly sung or recited as eac h<br />

game was played.<br />

TÏ TÏ TOREA — STICK GAMES<br />

Traditionally the small straight branc hes of the<br />

manuka tree,m atai or maire trees were used as<br />

tï tï torea stic ks as they were plentiful and easy<br />

to gather.Traditionally boys and young men used<br />

this game to increase dexterity and aler tness,<br />

while gir ls and young women were thought to<br />

benefit from increased adroitness for poi and<br />

dances.<br />

To make Tï Tï Torea:<br />

taped magazines or<br />

newspapers.<br />
