Wstęp
W Unii Europejskiej jesteśmy dumni z naszej różnorodności kulturowej. Przywiązujemy
wielką wagę to tego, by idea pluralizmu stanowiła istotę jej strategii. Traktaty, na których od
dziesięcioleci opiera się integracja europejska, zawsze przypisywały ważną rolę poszanowaniu
kultur. To zostało również wyartykułowane w nowym traktacie lizbońskim, w którego
preambule podkreślono, że Europa czerpie z kulturowego, religijnego i humanistycznego
dziedzictwa swoich narodów.
Parlament Europejski podziela ten etos i zachęca do wszelkich działań mających na celu
wspieranie poszanowania różnorodności kulturowej we wszelkich jej przejawach.
Nawiązując do niedawnych obchodów 20. rocznicy demokratycznych przemian w Europie
Środkowej i Wschodniej Parlament Europejski pragnie uhonorować dzieła sztuki pochodzące
z kilku państw, które przystąpiły do Unii Europejskiej w 2004 r., po dziesięcioleciach izolacji
za żelazną kurtyną. Niniejszy katalog pozwoli Państwu odkryć i zapoznać się z wieloma dziełami wiele dzieł sztuki z Łotwy,
Litwy, Węgier i Polski.
Po wystawie dzieł sztuki z Łotwy, Litwy i Węgier, która miała miejsce w 2009 r., jest mi niezmiernie miło zaprosić Państwa na
kolejną, złożoną z polskich dzieł sztuki nabytych niedawno przez Parlament Europejski. Jestem przekonany, że te wyjątkowe
eksponaty pochodzące z mojej ojczyzny wzbogacą kolekcję sztuki współczesnej w Parlamencie.

The European Union is proud of the cultural diversity it embodies and places great importance on integrating the idea
of plurality into the very core of its policies. The various Treaties that have underpinned European integration over recent
decades have always given a prominent role to respect for cultures. This political will is indeed reinforced yet again in the new
Treaty of Lisbon, which in its preamble emphasises that Europe draws inspiration from the cultural, religious and humanist
inheritance of its peoples.
The European Parliament shares this ethos and encourages all actions aimed at promoting respect for cultural diversity
in all its forms.
Not long after the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of democratic change in Central and Eastern Europe, the
European Parliament is honouring the artistic works from a number of countries that joined the European Union in 2004,
after having been behind the Iron Curtain for decades. Consequently, in this brochure you will discover many works of art
from Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and Poland.
After the presentation in 2009 of Latvian, Lithuanian and Hungarian works of art, I am now delighted to invite you to visit
the exhibition that contains the Polish works of art most recently acquired by the European Parliament. These unique pieces
coming from my home country, I am convinced will enhance Parliament’s modern art collection.

L’Union européenne, fière de la diversité culturelle qui la caractérise, attache une grande importance à intégrer cette
notion de pluralité au cœur même de ses politiques. Les différents traités qui ont jalonné l’intégration européenne au cours
de ces dernières décennies ont toujours réservé une place primordiale au respect des cultures. Une volonté politique bel
et bien reconfirmée avec force dans le nouveau traité de Lisbonne qui souligne, dans son préambule, combien l’Europe
s’inspire des héritages culturels, religieux et humanistes de ses peuples.
Le Parlement européen fait sienne cette philosophie et soutient toutes les actions visant à promouvoir le respect de la
diversité culturelle sous toutes ses formes.
Peu après les célébrations commémorant le vingtième anniversaire du changement démocratique en Europe centrale et
orientale, le Parlement européen rend hommage à des artistes de plusieurs pays devenus membres de l’Union européenne
en 2004, après avoir été relégués derrière le rideau de fer pendant des décennies. Vous découvrirez donc dans cette brochure
de nombreuses œuvres d’art de Lettonie, de Lituanie, de Hongrie et de Pologne.
Après la présentation en 2009 d’œuvres d’art lettones, lituaniennes et hongroises, j’ai aujourd’hui le plaisir de vous inviter
à visiter l’exposition qui rassemble les œuvres d’art polonaises les plus récemment acquises par le Parlement européen. Ces
pièces uniques venant de mon pays d’origine enrichiront, j’en suis convaincu, la collection d’art moderne du Parlement.

Ludwig van Beethoven, wielki kompozytor, któremu jako obywatele Unii Europejskiej zawdzięczamy także hymn
Zjednoczonej Europy, powiedział kiedyś: «Prawdziwy artysta widzi, iż sztuka nie ma granic, czuje jednak , że sam wciąż daleki
jest od swego celu, i podczas gdy inni podziwiają go, on sam boleje nad tym, że nie dotarł jeszcze do tego punktu, który
ukazuje mu się ciągle odległy jak światło słońca». Kiedyś słowa, iż „wszyscy ludzie będą braćmi” także brzmiały jak nierealne
marzenia, dziś Zjednoczona Europa może być dumna z postępów, jakie przez ostatnie lata poczyniła w sztuce integracji.
Chociaż przed europejską rodziną wciąż stoją poważne wyzwania i nie osiągnęliśmy jeszcze wszystkich celów, dziś możemy
z podziwem spoglądać na wspólny dorobek. Okazję do tego stanowi choćby kolejna wystawa dzieł sztuki stworzonych
przez współczesnych artystów wywodzących się z nowych państw członkowskich Unii Europejskiej. Jest to już trzecie, po
wielkim rozszerzeniu Unii w 2004 roku, przedsięwzięcie - tym razem prezentujące prace z Polski, które wzbogacają cenną
kolekcję sztuki Parlamentu Europejskiego.
Prezentowane dzieła zostały pierwotnie wytypowane za pośrednictwem Biura Informacyjnego Parlamentu Europejskiego
w Warszawie przez grono polskich ekspertów w składzie:
- Zofia Gołubiew, dyrektor Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie
- Agnieszka Morawińska, dyrektor Galerii Narodowej Zachęta w Warszawie
- Paweł Potoroczyn, dyrektor Instytutu Adama Mickiewicza
- Jarosław Suchan, dyrektor Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi
Ostatecznego wyboru 10 prac spośród 45 propozycji ekspertów dokonał zaś - na szczeblu Parlamentu Europejskiego -
Komitet Artystyczny oraz Przewodniczący PE. Eksponowane prace zostały zakupione przez Parlament Europejski na mocy
decyzji Prezydium z 11 grudnia 2006 r. W katalogu, który trzymają Państwo w rękach, można obejrzeć także prace z Litwy,
Łotwy i Węgier - pokazane w Parlamencie Europejskim 15 kwietnia 2009 r. Obecnie kolekcja sztuki autorstwa artystów z
nowych państw członkowskich obejmuje już 59 eksponatów, a w 2010 r. powiększy się jeszcze o obrazy i rzeźby z Malty,
Słowenii oraz Słowacji.
Tradycja nabywania i prezentowania współczesnych dzieł europejskich - w celu promocji kulturalnego dorobku państw
członkowskich UE – została zapoczątkowana przez, wybraną w pierwszych wyborach bezpośrednich, przewodniczącą
Parlamentu Europejskiego Simone Veil. Przedkładając tę ideę Kolegium Kwestorów w 1980 r., przewodnicząca pragnęła
zaszczepić na gruncie europejskim piękny zwyczaj eksponowania wybitnych dzieł sztuki, kultywowany od lat przez
parlamenty narodowe. Pierwszy plan zakupu eksponatów zrealizowano w latach 1982-1989, a drugi - w okresie 1989-
1993. Wraz z przyjęciem trzeciego planu w 1997 r. zakończono proces nabywania prac ze wszystkich krajów ówczesnej
«Piętnastki».
Bogata kolekcja Parlamentu Europejskiego, łącznie z dziełami zakupionymi w ostatnich latach, liczy łącznie 363 obrazy i
rzeźby, które prezentowane są w trzech jego siedzibach - w Brukseli, Strasburgu i Luksemburgu - oraz w krajowych Biurach
Informacyjnych PE.

The great composer Ludwig van Beethoven, to whom we citizens of a united Europe owe among other things our anthem,
once wrote: ‘The real artist sees that art has no limits. He is dimly aware of how far he is from his goal and although he may
be admired by others, he laments the fact that he has not yet reached that place where his better genius shines like a distant
sun’. In the past, the prospect of ‘all men becoming brothers’ also seemed an impossible dream, but today’s united Europe
can be proud of the progress it has made in recent years towards integration. Although our European family is still faced with
a number of serious challenges and we have yet to attain all of our goals, today we can stand back and admire all that we
have achieved together. The latest exhibition of works by contemporary artists from the new EU Member States provides us
with an opportunity to do so. This exhibition which is the third since the 2004 enlargement of the Union, focuses on works
from Poland and will further enrich the European Parliament’s already fine collection of artworks.
The works on display were chosen from a shortlist drawn up, under the supervision of the Parliament’s information office
in Warsaw, by a panel of experts comprising:
- Zofia Gołubiew, director of the National Museum in Kraków
- Agnieszka Morawińska, director of the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw
- Paweł Potoroczyn, director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
- Jarosław Suchan, director of the Łódź Museum of Art
The final choice of 10 works from among the 45 put forward by the panel was made by the Parliament’s Artistic Committee
and the EP President. The Parliament then purchased the works after its Bureau had given its approval on 11 December 2006.
The catalogue includes also works from Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania that were presented at the European Parliament on
15 April 2009. In 2010, the Parliament’s collection of works by artists from the new Member States, which already comprises
59 items, will be swelled by paintings and sculptures from Malta, Slovenia and Slovakia.
The tradition of purchasing and displaying contemporary artworks with a view to promote the cultural output of the EU
Member States, was started by the President of the first directly elected European Parliament, Simone Veil. On a proposal
from the College of Quaestors in 1980, she sought to emulate national parliaments’ long-standing practice of displaying
outstanding works of art. The first programme for the purchase of artworks ran from 1982 to 1989, and the second from 1989
to 1993. A third programme in 1997, brought the campaign of purchases from the then 15 Member States, to a close.
With the purchases made over recent years, the European Parliament’s collection now comprises a total of 363 paintings
and sculptures. This collection is on display at the Parliament’s three places of work in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg
and in its national information offices.
I very much hope that the exhibition will leave a lasting impression on you as it has on me.

Mesdames, Messieurs,
Ludwig van Beethoven, grand compositeur à qui les citoyens de l’Union européenne doivent notamment l’hymne de
l’Europe réunifiée, a déclaré un jour: «L’artiste véritable sait que l’art n’a pas de limites; il sent obscurément combien il est
éloigné du but et, tandis qu’il est peut-être admiré par d’autres, il déplore de n’être encore parvenu que là où le meilleur de
son génie ne brille que comme un lointain soleil». Autrefois, les paroles «tous les hommes sont frères» semblaient être aussi
un rêve irréel. Aujourd’hui, l’Europe réunifiée peut être fière des progrès qu’elle a accomplis au cours de ces dernières années
dans le processus d’intégration. Bien que la famille européenne soit encore confrontée à de sérieux défis et que nous n’ayons
pas encore atteint la totalité de nos objectifs, nous pouvons prendre un peu de recul et admirer tout ce que nous avons réalisé
ensemble. L’occasion nous en a notamment été offerte lors de la dernière exposition de travaux d’artistes contemporains
originaires des nouveaux États membres de l’Union européenne. Depuis l’élargissement de l’Union européenne de 2004,
cette exposition est déjà la troisième initiative de ce type, présentant cette fois-ci des œuvres polonaises qui viennent enrichir
la collection d’art de grande valeur du Parlement européen.
Les œuvres présentées ont tout d’abord été sélectionnées par l’intermédiaire du bureau d’information du Parlement
européen à Varsovie par un groupe d’experts polonais composé des personnes suivantes:
- Zofia Gołubiew, directrice du Musée National de Cracovie
- Agnieszka Morawińska, directrice de la Galerie Nationale Zachęta à Varsovie
- Paweł Potoroczyn, directeur de l’Institut Adam Mickiewicz.
- Jarosław Suchan, directeur du Musée d’Art de Łódź
La sélection finale de 10 œuvres sur les 45 proposées a été réalisée au niveau du Parlement européen par le comité
artistique et le président du Parlement. Les travaux exposés ont été acquis par le Parlement sur décision du Bureau du
11 décembre 2006. Le présent catalogue permet également d’admirer des œuvres lettonnes, lituaniennes, et hongroises
exposées au Parlement européen le 15 avril 2009.
La collection d’œuvres d’artistes originaires des nouveaux États membres comprend déjà 59 pièces et elle sera complétée
en 2010 par des tableaux et des sculptures de Malte, de Slovénie et de Slovaquie.
La tradition consistant à acquérir et exposer des œuvres européennes d’art contemporain en vue de promouvoir
le patrimoine culturel des États membres de l’Union européenne, a été initiée par Simone Veil, première présidente
du Parlement européen élue au suffrage universel direct. En présentant cette idée au collège des questeurs en 1980, la
présidente souhaitait implanter sur le sol européen la tradition d’exposer des œuvres d’art majeures, tradition cultivée depuis
de nombreuses années par les parlements nationaux. Le premier programme d’acquisition a été réalisé entre 1982 et 1989
et le second entre 1989 et 1993. L’adoption, en 1997, du troisième programme a permis d’achever le processus d’acquisition
d’œuvres en provenance de l’ensemble des pays de l’Union européenne des Quinze.
En comptant les œuvres acquises au cours de ces dernières années, la riche collection du Parlement européen compte au
total 363 tableaux et sculptures qui sont exposés sur les trois lieux de travail du Parlement européen à Bruxelles, à Strasbourg
et au Luxembourg, ainsi que dans ses bureaux d’information nationaux.

Her work is mostly about perception: the way we look at the world, building up an image of the whole from different
fragments. It involves comparing the different perceptions of time bound to the specific spaces.

Career
Since 2000, Vineta Kaulača is member of the Artists’ Union of Latvia.
She presented her work during numerous exhibitions in Latvian contemporary art centres (from 1990 to nowadays) and
abroad, in Paris (Cité Internationale des Arts, 2002 and 2003), The Hague (2006), Brussels (2004), Los Angeles (2005), New York
(2004), London (Studio 1.1 Gallery in 2004 and APT Gallery in 2007), Oxfordshire (Braziers International Artists’ Workshop),
Dublin (2003), Helsinki (1997), Turku (1994), Prague (1997), Bremen (2001, 2002,1999), Tartu (2003) and Kaunas in Lithuania
(2002).

He is a renowned curator who achieved his Phd in 1983 and attended «L’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris», Sorbonne,
Arts Plastiques in 1987 and 1988. Since 1997 he came back several times to Latvia and occupies the position of Vice Rector
of the Art Academy of Latvia.
Career
He has a wide international experience as curator in art pedagogics, in one man show exhibition as well as in group
exhibitions. In 2007 he prepared the exhibition «Saint-Etienne à Riga», Workshops of ESAD Strasbourg in the frame of the
festival «Printemps Français», presented «Landscapes» in the gallery M-ART’ in Brussels (2007) and participated in the UNESCO
exhibition hall in Beirut (2006).
Award of the Italian president» Oride al merito della Repubblica Italiana. Comendatore» in 2004 and First Prize in Frescopainting
Biennale «Golden griffon», Dozza, in 1995.

Līga PURMALE
Born in 1948 in Latvian. Painter.
She currently lives and works in Riga.
Education

At a young age she moved to Riga from the Latvian countryside to study painting, first at the Jānis Rozentāls Art High School
and then at the Latvian Academy of Art.
Career
In the 1970s she and Miervaldis Polis started a new trend of photorealism in Latvian painting. Although painting is the
primary field of the artist’s creative activity; she has practiced also graphics and stage design. Līga Purmalewas was stage
designer for Petr Tchaikovsky’s ballet «Swan Lake» (2002) and Adolphe Adam’s ballet «Le Corsaire» (2003) at the Latvian
National Opera.
Līga Purmale’s works are included in the collections of the State Museum of Art (Riga), the Artists’ Union of Latvia Museum
(Riga), the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the KIāvs Sīpoliņš Foundation (Canada), Ainars Gulbis privat collection and
other private collections in Latvia and abroad, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University (USA).

Otto ZITMANIS
Born in July in 1980. Otto Zitmanis belongs to the youngest generation of Latvian painters.
Education
Master at the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Painting.

Since 2000 he has been participating to some photo exhibitions mostly in Riga but also in St. Petersburg for the «KF KM State
Photography Center» (Sept. 2002).
Morevover, he also exposed his collection of painting «Heart’s Full» in September 2005 in Germany (Lippstadt) which was,
the previous year, presented at the Art Gallery «Bastejs» in Riga.
He received the Latvian Artists’ Association prize for «Professionally convincing new artists’ performance» at the exhibition
«Fall 2000».

Jonas GASIŪNAS
Born in 1954 in Tiumenceve in Altai, Russia.

He studied in Pedagogical Institute of Šiauliai, as well as in Kaunas Applied Art Co1lege, and in State Art Institute in Vilnius.
He is currently teaching in Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts. He participates in the exhibitions since 1985; he is a member of the
artists group «Angis».
Career
The artist’s provocative artistic ideas are inspired by a dehumanized space of existence negatively affected by modern
technologies.
He was awarded twice the First Prize in Vilnius Painting Triennial (1993, 1997). He also received the First Prize in «Youth ‘88»
Young Baltic Artists’ Triennial in 1988.
Among his solo exhibitions, ´´Edward’s trajectory´´, at Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema in Vilnius was the most recent.
Also, he has been active participant in the group exhibitions of which the latest include «Contemporary Lithuanian Art
ANEW» in Bydgoszcz and Katowice in Poland (2008); «Urgentum praecifitatum sulfur» in Vilnius, and KOVIKAVI project in Art
Museum of Estonia (KUMU) in Tallinn (2008).

Kęstutis GRIGALIŪNAS
Born in 1957 in Kaunas. Graphic.

Having graduated from the Art Institute, the Chair of Graphic Art in 1982, he started his artistic career from book illustrations,
woodcuts and etchings. Since then he has tried to expand in all possible direction and not limit himself only with the
possibilities offered by the graphic genre.
He has received several grants and scholarships from the governmental and private associations, including the Pollock-
Krasner Grant (2001), Ministre Van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Frans Maserel Graphic Center (1995, 2004 and 2005) and
Lithuanian state stipend (2001-2003, 2006-2008).
Career
He has arranged around thirty solo exhibitions that have travelled in several European countries. The most recent of them
are «A Form of Si1ence - Steady Sence of Identity» (2008) in Gallery Akademija in Vilnius, «Simultaneous Vision» (2008) in
Kaunas M.K.Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. In addition, Grigaliūnas has participated in numerous group exhibitions. In
2008 his works were presented in International Graphic Art Biennial «Now Art Now Future» (Lithuania), as well as during the
IV International Graphic art Triennial in Kaliningrad (Russia).

After finishing school in 1973 and serving in the army, he worked as artist’s assistant in Opera and Ballet House for four years.
In 1980 he entered Vilnius Art Institute (now Academy) where he studied until 1985. During his studies and after graduating
he worked as senior artist - scene painter in Vilnius Youth Theatre.
Career
From 1990 he is working as a freelance artist. Besides painting he has worked in the fields of poster art, book illustration, set
design, sculpture and photography.
He is participating in exhibitions from 1986. He has since arranged 47 personal exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, as well
as has exhibited his work in more than 50 group exhibitions. The latest displays featuring Griškevičius ’works were his solo
exhibitions in 2008 in Ireland, ‘Photo and objects’, ‘Miracles of Mikaliskes Village’ (photography) in Vilnius Prospekto’ gallery,
and 2008 Beijing International Art Biennale and «Festimage» International Image Festiva in Portugal in the same year.
His many awards include Lithuanian Artists Association’s Golden Badge for the best exhibitions in 2007, Lithuanian Artists
Association premium for creative continuation of Lithuanian tradition in the annual exhibition of Lithuanian painters (1997),
and the most recent, second position in International Caroun Photo Club (CPC) competition in Vancouver (2009).
Griškevičius is a member of Lithuanian Artists Association.

The development of Lithuanian abstract art is closely associated with her name.
Education
After her studies at the Lithuanian Art Institute in Vilnius in 1962 - 1968, she almost immediately began to interest herself in
the problems of pure plastics - to analyze the power of the colour and painterly expression irrespective of the story or motif
which frequent1y captures them. Today Katiliūtė is a prominent painter in blue colour. This colour presents the main object
of her studies, and has been dominating throughout the whole period of the artist’s creation.
Career
Her first sole exhibition took place in 1977 in Vilnius and since that time her works have been presented in numerous
galleries and art centres all around the world. Her paintings can be found in many public and private collections in Lithuania
(Lithuanian Art Museum, National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum) and abroad, including Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, as well
as private collections in Germany, Finland, USA, United Kingdom, France, Turkey, and others.
Besides her solo exhibitions, Katiliūtė is often represented in various group exhibitions.
In 1994 she received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.

He studied in St. Žukas Technical Art College in the Painting Restoration Department in Kaunas (1985-1989) and later in the
Painting Department of Vilnius Art Academy (1989-1995) where he formed his personal style.
Career
Marcinkevicius creates figure painting and colour drawings. He arranges several solo exhibitions a year and is one of the
most prolific Lithuanian young painters who take an active part in creative life. The artist’s favourite themes are various
mythological subjects. He interprets them in a non-traditional way with a big enough dose of irony and humour.
The painter has held thirty personal exhibitions in Lithuania, Denmark, France, Sweden and the Faroe Islands. The artist
participated in the Copenhagen, Cologne and tribal art fairs.
He believes that artworks shall move from galleries and exhibition halls into urbanistic environment, bringing art closer to
people. Marcinkevicius initiated an art project, where Lithuanian and international artists for the first time created paintings
in extremely huge size in open public spaces: streets, parks, and squares.
He has been voted for four times artist of the year in Lithuania (2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005). His latest solo exhibition ‘Identity’’
took place in 2008 in Denmark. The same year he also participated in” I Baltic Biennial» in The Central Exhibition Hall of St-
Petersburg «Manege» (Russia)

She completed her postgraduate degree in 1996 at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. Gallusz is one of the most skilled and
inventive artists of the contemporary Hungarian graphic art. The paintings, graphics, photos at the exhibition deal with the
relation to the plane and dimension, the harmony and the differences of the projection of the spatial forms on the plane.
Career
Specialized in graphic art, Gallusz´s work has been featured in many exhibitions. In 2000, she held an exhibition under the
aegis of the Millenial Festival of Films on Fine Art in Bzolnok. Her exhibition Transmission into the Shadow World was also
featured Budapest in 2004. In 2008 her exhibition «Creeping Moves» was featured in Galéria IX in Budapest.
In 2006, she won the Csehország Honorary Certificate of the Highest Quality. She also won the Award of the Ministry of
Education and Culture in 2008. Furthermore, she is a member of both the National Association of Hungarian Creative Artists
and the Association of Hungarian Graphic Artists.

During her career, she has been awarded the First Prize at the Dante Biennale in Ravenna in 1987, Gold Medal of the city

Republic in 2002 and Károly Róbert Gold Medal in 2004.
Her artistic works include sculptures, statuettes, and leaden-glass windows.
Her works have been featured in exhibitions in Hungary and abroad, including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada and
USA.
Lantos is a member of both the Art Found and the Federation of Hungarian Fine and Applied Arts Society. She often works

The primary medium in which Aneta Grzeszykowska works is photography. However, she treats it instrumentally, as a tool
for the realization of advanced, artistic and ontological exercises. The artist is interested in the role photography plays in
creating and documenting a personal identity. Therefore, in her film projects or doll sculptures, the human figure acquires
the shape and aura of a marionette. One of the main topics of Grzeszykowska’s works is her own identity, with which she
plays on many levels: by erasing her own figure from a family collection of photographs (Album, 2005), or by impersonating
Cindy Sherman in her classic cycle Untitled Film Stills (2006). Some projects by Grzeszykowska - like the cycle of illusionist
portraits of non-existent people (Untitled, 2006) - take advantage of the possibilities offered by digital image manipulation,
while others use photography and film in a classic way by emphasizing the performative dimension of the artist’s activities.
The motifs which she obsessively returns to in her works are absence, invisibility, disappearing, and the confrontation of
body and thought with non-existence.

Zbigniew Rogalski is a painter, or rather a director of paintings, as he moves with great ease both in the regions of painting
and photography, mixing them and taking advantage of both disciplines. Reflexes, after-images, film stills and photographs
all overlap the image of reality, as if in a specially constructed optic machine which retains on the surface of the canvas the
emotions and meanings which normally are no more permanent than a drawing on a steamed-up glass. A number of his
works allude to the classic genres of painting, such as portrait or landscape. However, by interweaving different clichés and
conventions of representation, Rogalski is led to surprisingly essential painterly solutions which make the tradition of this
medium interesting again.
