Wstęp<br />
W Unii Europejskiej jesteśmy dumni z naszej różnorodności kulturowej. Przywiązujemy<br />
wielką wagę to tego, by i<strong>de</strong>a pluralizmu stanowiła istotę jej strategii. Traktaty, na których od<br />
dziesięcioleci opiera się integracja europejska, zawsze przypisywały ważną rolę poszanowaniu<br />
kultur. To zostało również wyartykułowane w nowym traktacie lizbońskim, w którego<br />
preambule podkreślono, że Europa czerpie z kulturowego, religijnego i humanistycznego<br />
dziedzictwa swoich narodów.<br />
Parlament Europejski podziela ten etos i zachęca <strong>do</strong> wszelkich działań mających na celu<br />
wspieranie poszanowania różnorodności kulturowej we wszelkich jej przejawach.<br />
Nawiązując <strong>do</strong> niedawnych obchodów 20. rocznicy <strong>de</strong>mokratycznych przemian w Europie<br />
Środkowej i Wschodniej Parlament Europejski pragnie uhonorować dzieła sztuki pochodzące<br />
z kilku państw, które przystąpiły <strong>do</strong> Unii Europejskiej w 2004 r., po dziesięcioleciach izolacji<br />
za żelazną kurtyną. Niniejszy katalog pozwoli Państwu odkryć i zapoznać się z wieloma dziełami wiele dzieł sztuki z Łotwy,<br />
Litwy, Węgier i Polski.<br />
Po wystawie dzieł sztuki z Łotwy, Litwy i Węgier, która miała miejsce w 2009 r., jest mi niezmiernie miło zaprosić Państwa na<br />
kolejną, złożoną z polskich dzieł sztuki nabytych niedawno przez Parlament Europejski. Jestem przekonany, że te wyjątkowe<br />
eksponaty pochodzące z mojej ojczyzny wzbogacą kolekcję sztuki współczesnej w Parlamencie.<br />

The European Union is proud of the cultural diversity it embodies and places great importance on integrating the i<strong>de</strong>a<br />
of plurality into the very core of its policies. The various Treaties that have un<strong>de</strong>rpinned European integration over recent<br />
<strong>de</strong>ca<strong>de</strong>s have always given a prominent role to respect for cultures. This political will is in<strong>de</strong>ed reinforced yet again in the new<br />
Treaty of Lisbon, which in its preamble emphasises that Europe draws inspiration from the cultural, religious and humanist<br />
inheritance of its peoples.<br />
The European Parliament shares this ethos and encourages all actions aimed at promoting respect for cultural diversity<br />
in all its forms.<br />
Not long after the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of <strong>de</strong>mocratic change in Central and Eastern Europe, the<br />
European Parliament is honouring the artistic works from a number of countries that joined the European Union in 2004,<br />
after having been behind the Iron Curtain for <strong>de</strong>ca<strong>de</strong>s. Consequently, in this brochure you will discover many works of art<br />
from Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and Poland.<br />
After the presentation in 2009 of Latvian, Lithuanian and Hungarian works of art, I am now <strong>de</strong>lighted to invite you to visit<br />
the exhibition that contains the Polish works of art most recently acquired by the European Parliament. These unique pieces<br />
coming from my home country, I am convinced will enhance Parliament’s mo<strong>de</strong>rn art collection.<br />

L’Union européenne, fière <strong>de</strong> la diversité culturelle qui la caractérise, attache une gran<strong>de</strong> importance à intégrer cette<br />
notion <strong>de</strong> pluralité au cœur même <strong>de</strong> ses politiques. Les différents traités qui ont jalonné l’intégration européenne au cours<br />
<strong>de</strong> ces <strong>de</strong>rnières décennies ont toujours réservé une place primordiale au respect <strong>de</strong>s cultures. Une volonté politique bel<br />
et bien reconfirmée avec force dans le nouveau traité <strong>de</strong> Lisbonne qui souligne, dans son préambule, combien l’Europe<br />
s’inspire <strong>de</strong>s héritages culturels, religieux et humanistes <strong>de</strong> ses peuples.<br />

Ludwig van Beethoven, wielki kompozytor, któremu jako obywatele Unii Europejskiej zawdzięczamy także hymn<br />
Zjednoczonej Europy, powiedział kiedyś: «Prawdziwy artysta widzi, iż sztuka nie ma granic, czuje jednak , że sam wciąż daleki<br />
jest od swego celu, i podczas gdy inni podziwiają go, on sam boleje nad tym, że nie <strong>do</strong>tarł jeszcze <strong>do</strong> tego punktu, który<br />
ukazuje mu się ciągle odległy jak światło słońca». Kiedyś słowa, iż „wszyscy ludzie będą braćmi” także brzmiały jak nierealne<br />
marzenia, dziś Zjednoczona Europa może być dumna z postępów, jakie przez ostatnie lata poczyniła w sztuce integracji.<br />
Chociaż przed europejską rodziną wciąż stoją poważne wyzwania i nie osiągnęliśmy jeszcze wszystkich celów, dziś możemy<br />
z podziwem spoglądać na wspólny <strong>do</strong>robek. Okazję <strong>do</strong> tego stanowi choćby kolejna wystawa dzieł sztuki stworzonych<br />
przez współczesnych artystów wywodzących się z nowych państw członkowskich Unii Europejskiej. Jest to już trzecie, po<br />
wielkim rozszerzeniu Unii w 2004 roku, przedsięwzięcie - tym razem prezentujące prace z Polski, które wzbogacają cenną<br />
kolekcję sztuki Parlamentu Europejskiego.<br />
Prezentowane dzieła zostały pierwotnie wytypowane za pośrednictwem Biura Informacyjnego Parlamentu Europejskiego<br />
w Warszawie przez grono polskich ekspertów w składzie:<br />
- Zofia Gołubiew, dyrektor Muzeum Naro<strong>do</strong>wego w Krakowie<br />
- Agnieszka Morawińska, dyrektor Galerii Naro<strong>do</strong>wej Zachęta w Warszawie<br />
- Paweł Potoroczyn, dyrektor Instytutu Adama Mickiewicza<br />
- Jarosław Suchan, dyrektor Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi<br />
Ostatecznego wyboru 10 prac spośród 45 propozycji ekspertów <strong>do</strong>konał zaś - na szczeblu Parlamentu Europejskiego -<br />
Komitet Artystyczny oraz Przewodniczący PE. Eksponowane prace zostały zakupione przez Parlament Europejski na mocy<br />
<strong>de</strong>cyzji Prezydium z 11 grudnia 2006 r. W katalogu, który trzymają Państwo w rękach, można obejrzeć także prace z Litwy,<br />
Łotwy i Węgier - pokazane w Parlamencie Europejskim 15 kwietnia 2009 r. Obecnie kolekcja sztuki autorstwa artystów z<br />
nowych państw członkowskich obejmuje już 59 eksponatów, a w 2010 r. powiększy się jeszcze o obrazy i rzeźby z Malty,<br />
Słowenii oraz Słowacji.<br />
Tradycja nabywania i prezentowania współczesnych dzieł europejskich - w celu promocji kulturalnego <strong>do</strong>robku państw<br />
członkowskich UE – została zapoczątkowana przez, wybraną w pierwszych wyborach bezpośrednich, przewodniczącą<br />
Parlamentu Europejskiego Simone Veil. Przedkładając tę i<strong>de</strong>ę Kolegium Kwestorów w 1980 r., przewodnicząca pragnęła<br />
zaszczepić na gruncie europejskim piękny zwyczaj eksponowania wybitnych dzieł sztuki, kultywowany od lat przez<br />
parlamenty naro<strong>do</strong>we. Pierwszy plan zakupu eksponatów zrealizowano w latach 1982-1989, a drugi - w okresie 1989-<br />
1993. Wraz z przyjęciem trzeciego planu w 1997 r. zakończono proces nabywania prac ze wszystkich krajów ówczesnej<br />
«Piętnastki».<br />
Bogata kolekcja Parlamentu Europejskiego, łącznie z dziełami zakupionymi w ostatnich latach, liczy łącznie 363 obrazy i<br />
rzeźby, które prezentowane są w trzech jego siedzibach - w Brukseli, Strasburgu i Luksemburgu - oraz w krajowych Biurach<br />
Informacyjnych PE.<br />

The great composer Ludwig van Beethoven, to whom we citizens of a united Europe owe among other things our anthem,<br />
once wrote: ‘The real artist sees that art has no limits. He is dimly aware of how far he is from his goal and although he may<br />
be admired by others, he laments the fact that he has not yet reached that place where his better genius shines like a distant<br />
sun’. In the past, the prospect of ‘all men becoming brothers’ also seemed an impossible dream, but today’s united Europe<br />
can be proud of the progress it has ma<strong>de</strong> in recent years towards integration. Although our European family is still faced with<br />
a number of serious challenges and we have yet to attain all of our goals, today we can stand back and admire all that we<br />
have achieved together. The latest exhibition of works by contemporary artists from the new EU Member States provi<strong>de</strong>s us<br />
with an opportunity to <strong>do</strong> so. This exhibition which is the third since the 2004 enlargement of the Union, focuses on works<br />
from Poland and will further enrich the European Parliament’s already fine collection of artworks.<br />
The works on display were chosen from a shortlist drawn up, un<strong>de</strong>r the supervision of the Parliament’s information office<br />
in Warsaw, by a panel of experts comprising:<br />
- Zofia Gołubiew, director of the National Museum in Kraków<br />
- Agnieszka Morawińska, director of the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw<br />
- Paweł Potoroczyn, director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.<br />
- Jarosław Suchan, director of the Łódź Museum of Art<br />
The final choice of 10 works from among the 45 put forward by the panel was ma<strong>de</strong> by the Parliament’s Artistic Committee<br />
and the EP Presi<strong>de</strong>nt. The Parliament then purchased the works after its Bureau had given its approval on 11 December 2006.<br />
The catalogue inclu<strong>de</strong>s also works from Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania that were presented at the European Parliament on<br />
15 April 2009. In 2010, the Parliament’s collection of works by artists from the new Member States, which already comprises<br />
59 items, will be swelled by paintings and sculptures from Malta, Slovenia and Slovakia.<br />
The tradition of purchasing and displaying contemporary artworks with a view to promote the cultural output of the EU<br />
Member States, was started by the Presi<strong>de</strong>nt of the first directly elected European Parliament, Simone Veil. On a proposal<br />
from the College of Quaestors in 1980, she sought to emulate national parliaments’ long-standing practice of displaying<br />
outstanding works of art. The first programme for the purchase of artworks ran from 1982 to 1989, and the second from 1989<br />
to 1993. A third programme in 1997, brought the campaign of purchases from the then 15 Member States, to a close.<br />
With the purchases ma<strong>de</strong> over recent years, the European Parliament’s collection now comprises a total of 363 paintings<br />
and sculptures. This collection is on display at the Parliament’s three places of work in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg<br />
and in its national information offices.<br />

Mesdames, Messieurs,<br />
Ludwig van Beethoven, grand compositeur à qui les citoyens <strong>de</strong> l’Union européenne <strong>do</strong>ivent notamment l’hymne <strong>de</strong><br />
l’Europe réunifiée, a déclaré un jour: «L’artiste véritable sait que l’art n’a pas <strong>de</strong> limites; il sent obscurément combien il est<br />
éloigné du but et, tandis qu’il est peut-être admiré par d’autres, il déplore <strong>de</strong> n’être encore parvenu que là où le meilleur <strong>de</strong><br />
son génie ne brille que comme un lointain soleil». Autrefois, les paroles «tous les hommes sont frères» semblaient être aussi<br />
un rêve irréel. Aujourd’hui, l’Europe réunifiée peut être fière <strong>de</strong>s progrès qu’elle a accomplis au cours <strong>de</strong> ces <strong>de</strong>rnières années<br />
dans le processus d’intégration. Bien que la famille européenne soit encore confrontée à <strong>de</strong> sérieux défis et que nous n’ayons<br />
pas encore atteint la totalité <strong>de</strong> nos objectifs, nous pouvons prendre un peu <strong>de</strong> recul et admirer tout ce que nous avons réalisé<br />
ensemble. L’occasion nous en a notamment été offerte lors <strong>de</strong> la <strong>de</strong>rnière exposition <strong>de</strong> travaux d’artistes contemporains<br />
originaires <strong>de</strong>s nouveaux États membres <strong>de</strong> l’Union européenne. Depuis l’élargissement <strong>de</strong> l’Union européenne <strong>de</strong> 2004,<br />
cette exposition est déjà la troisième initiative <strong>de</strong> ce type, présentant cette fois-ci <strong>de</strong>s œuvres polonaises qui viennent enrichir<br />
la collection d’art <strong>de</strong> gran<strong>de</strong> valeur du Parlement européen.<br />
Les œuvres présentées ont tout d’abord été sélectionnées par l’intermédiaire du bureau d’information du Parlement<br />
européen à Varsovie par un groupe d’experts polonais composé <strong>de</strong>s personnes suivantes:<br />
- Zofia Gołubiew, directrice du Musée National <strong>de</strong> Cracovie<br />
- Agnieszka Morawińska, directrice <strong>de</strong> la Galerie Nationale Zachęta à Varsovie<br />
- Paweł Potoroczyn, directeur <strong>de</strong> l’Institut Adam Mickiewicz.<br />

La sélection finale <strong>de</strong> 10 œuvres sur les 45 proposées a été réalisée au niveau du Parlement européen par le comité<br />
artistique et le prési<strong>de</strong>nt du Parlement. Les travaux exposés ont été acquis par le Parlement sur décision du Bureau du<br />
11 décembre 2006. Le présent catalogue permet également d’admirer <strong>de</strong>s œuvres lettonnes, lituaniennes, et hongroises<br />
exposées au Parlement européen le 15 avril 2009.<br />
La collection d’œuvres d’artistes originaires <strong>de</strong>s nouveaux États membres comprend déjà 59 pièces et elle sera complétée<br />
en 2010 par <strong>de</strong>s tableaux et <strong>de</strong>s sculptures <strong>de</strong> Malte, <strong>de</strong> Slovénie et <strong>de</strong> Slovaquie.<br />
La tradition consistant à acquérir et exposer <strong>de</strong>s œuvres européennes d’art contemporain en vue <strong>de</strong> promouvoir<br />

prési<strong>de</strong>nte souhaitait implanter sur le sol européen la tradition d’exposer <strong>de</strong>s œuvres d’art majeures, tradition cultivée <strong>de</strong>puis<br />
<strong>de</strong> nombreuses années par les parlements nationaux. Le premier programme d’acquisition a été réalisé entre 1982 et 1989<br />
et le second entre 1989 et 1993. L’a<strong>do</strong>ption, en 1997, du troisième programme a permis d’achever le processus d’acquisition<br />
d’œuvres en provenance <strong>de</strong> l’ensemble <strong>de</strong>s pays <strong>de</strong> l’Union européenne <strong>de</strong>s Quinze.<br />
En comptant les œuvres acquises au cours <strong>de</strong> ces <strong>de</strong>rnières années, la riche collection du Parlement européen compte au<br />
total 363 tableaux et sculptures qui sont exposés sur les trois lieux <strong>de</strong> travail du Parlement européen à Bruxelles, à Strasbourg<br />
et au Luxembourg, ainsi que dans ses bureaux d’information nationaux.<br />

Dublin (2003), Helsinki (1997), Turku (1994), Prague (1997), Bremen (2001, 2002,1999), Tartu (2003) and Kaunas in Lithuania<br />

Arts Plastiques in 1987 and 1988. Since 1997 he came back several times to Latvia and occupies the position of Vice Rector<br />
of the Art Aca<strong>de</strong>my of Latvia.<br />
Career<br />
He has a wi<strong>de</strong> international experience as curator in art pedagogics, in one man show exhibition as well as in group<br />

artists group «Angis».<br />
Career<br />
The artist’s provocative artistic i<strong>de</strong>as are inspired by a <strong>de</strong>humanized space of existence negatively affected by mo<strong>de</strong>rn<br />
technologies.<br />
He was awar<strong>de</strong>d twice the First Prize in Vilnius Painting Triennial (1993, 1997). He also received the First Prize in «Youth ‘88»<br />
Young Baltic Artists’ Triennial in 1988.<br />
Among his solo exhibitions, ´´Edward’s trajectory´´, at Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema in Vilnius was the most recent.<br />
Also, he has been active participant in the group exhibitions of which the latest inclu<strong>de</strong> «Contemporary Lithuanian Art<br />

Having graduated from the Art Institute, the Chair of Graphic Art in 1982, he started his artistic career from book illustrations,<br />
woodcuts and etchings. Since then he has tried to expand in all possible direction and not limit himself only with the<br />
possibilities offered by the graphic genre.<br />
He has received several grants and scholarships from the governmental and private associations, including the Pollock-<br />
Krasner Grant (2001), Ministre Van <strong>de</strong> Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Frans Maserel Graphic Center (1995, 2004 and 2005) and<br />
Lithuanian state stipend (2001-2003, 2006-2008).<br />
Career<br />
He has arranged around thirty solo exhibitions that have travelled in several European countries. The most recent of them<br />
are «A Form of Si1ence - Steady Sence of I<strong>de</strong>ntity» (2008) in Gallery Aka<strong>de</strong>mija in Vilnius, «Simultaneous Vision» (2008) in<br />
Kaunas M.K.Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. In addition, Grigaliūnas has participated in numerous group exhibitions. In<br />
2008 his works were presented in International Graphic Art Biennial «Now Art Now Future» (Lithuania), as well as during the<br />
IV International Graphic art Triennial in Kaliningrad (Russia).<br />

After finishing school in 1973 and serving in the army, he worked as artist’s assistant in Opera and Ballet House for four years.<br />
In 1980 he entered Vilnius Art Institute (now Aca<strong>de</strong>my) where he studied until 1985. During his studies and after graduating<br />
he worked as senior artist - scene painter in Vilnius Youth Theatre.<br />
Career<br />
From 1990 he is working as a freelance artist. Besi<strong>de</strong>s painting he has worked in the fields of poster art, book illustration, set<br />
<strong>de</strong>sign, sculpture and photography.<br />
He is participating in exhibitions from 1986. He has since arranged 47 personal exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, as well<br />
as has exhibited his work in more than 50 group exhibitions. The latest displays featuring Griškevičius ’works were his solo<br />
exhibitions in 2008 in Ireland, ‘Photo and objects’, ‘Miracles of Mikaliskes Village’ (photography) in Vilnius Prospekto’ gallery,<br />
and 2008 Beijing International Art Biennale and «Festimage» International Image Festiva in Portugal in the same year.<br />
His many awards inclu<strong>de</strong> Lithuanian Artists Association’s Gol<strong>de</strong>n Badge for the best exhibitions in 2007, Lithuanian Artists<br />
Association premium for creative continuation of Lithuanian tradition in the annual exhibition of Lithuanian painters (1997),<br />
and the most recent, second position in International Caroun Photo Club (CPC) competition in Vancouver (2009).<br />

The <strong>de</strong>velopment of Lithuanian abstract art is closely associated with her name.<br />
Education<br />
After her studies at the Lithuanian Art Institute in Vilnius in 1962 - 1968, she almost immediately began to interest herself in<br />
the problems of pure plastics - to analyze the power of the colour and painterly expression irrespective of the story or motif<br />
which frequent1y captures them. Today Katiliūtė is a prominent painter in blue colour. This colour presents the main object<br />
of her studies, and has been <strong>do</strong>minating throughout the whole period of the artist’s creation.<br />
Career<br />
Her first sole exhibition took place in 1977 in Vilnius and since that time her works have been presented in numerous<br />
galleries and art centres all around the world. Her paintings can be found in many public and private collections in Lithuania<br />
(Lithuanian Art Museum, National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum) and abroad, including Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, as well<br />
as private collections in Germany, Finland, USA, United King<strong>do</strong>m, France, Turkey, and others.<br />
Besi<strong>de</strong>s her solo exhibitions, Katiliūtė is often represented in various group exhibitions.<br />
In 1994 she received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.<br />

He studied in St. Žukas Technical Art College in the Painting Restoration Department in Kaunas (1985-1989) and later in the<br />
Painting Department of Vilnius Art Aca<strong>de</strong>my (1989-1995) where he formed his personal style.<br />
Career<br />
Marcinkevicius creates figure painting and colour drawings. He arranges several solo exhibitions a year and is one of the<br />
most prolific Lithuanian young painters who take an active part in creative life. The artist’s favourite themes are various<br />
mythological subjects. He interprets them in a non-traditional way with a big enough <strong>do</strong>se of irony and humour.<br />
The painter has held thirty personal exhibitions in Lithuania, Denmark, France, Swe<strong>de</strong>n and the Faroe Islands. The artist<br />
participated in the Copenhagen, Cologne and tribal art fairs.<br />
He believes that artworks shall move from galleries and exhibition halls into urbanistic environment, bringing art closer to<br />
people. Marcinkevicius initiated an art project, where Lithuanian and international artists for the first time created paintings<br />
in extremely huge size in open public spaces: streets, parks, and squares.<br />
He has been voted for four times artist of the year in Lithuania (2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005). His latest solo exhibition ‘I<strong>de</strong>ntity’’<br />

She completed her postgraduate <strong>de</strong>gree in 1996 at the Hungarian Aca<strong>de</strong>my of Fine Arts. Gallusz is one of the most skilled and<br />
inventive artists of the contemporary Hungarian graphic art. The paintings, graphics, photos at the exhibition <strong>de</strong>al with the<br />
relation to the plane and dimension, the harmony and the differences of the projection of the spatial forms on the plane.<br />
Career<br />
Specialized in graphic art, Gallusz´s work has been featured in many exhibitions. In 2000, she held an exhibition un<strong>de</strong>r the<br />
aegis of the Millenial Festival of Films on Fine Art in Bzolnok. Her exhibition Transmission into the Sha<strong>do</strong>w World was also<br />
featured Budapest in 2004. In 2008 her exhibition «Creeping Moves» was featured in Galéria IX in Budapest.<br />
In 2006, she won the Csehország Honorary Certificate of the Highest Quality. She also won the Award of the Ministry of<br />

The primary medium in which Aneta Grzeszykowska works is photography. However, she treats it instrumentally, as a tool<br />
for the realization of advanced, artistic and ontological exercises. The artist is interested in the role photography plays in<br />
creating and <strong>do</strong>cumenting a personal i<strong>de</strong>ntity. Therefore, in her film projects or <strong>do</strong>ll sculptures, the human figure acquires<br />
the shape and aura of a marionette. One of the main topics of Grzeszykowska’s works is her own i<strong>de</strong>ntity, with which she<br />
plays on many levels: by erasing her own figure from a family collection of photographs (Album, 2005), or by impersonating<br />
Cindy Sherman in her classic cycle Untitled Film Stills (2006). Some projects by Grzeszykowska - like the cycle of illusionist<br />
portraits of non-existent people (Untitled, 2006) - take advantage of the possibilities offered by digital image manipulation,<br />
while others use photography and film in a classic way by emphasizing the performative dimension of the artist’s activities.<br />
The motifs which she obsessively returns to in her works are absence, invisibility, disappearing, and the confrontation of<br />
body and thought with non-existence.<br />

Zbigniew Rogalski is a painter, or rather a director of paintings, as he moves with great ease both in the regions of painting<br />
and photography, mixing them and taking advantage of both disciplines. Reflexes, after-images, film stills and photographs<br />
all overlap the image of reality, as if in a specially constructed optic machine which retains on the surface of the canvas the<br />
emotions and meanings which normally are no more permanent than a drawing on a steamed-up glass. A number of his<br />
works allu<strong>de</strong> to the classic genres of painting, such as portrait or landscape. However, by interweaving different clichés and<br />
conventions of representation, Rogalski is led to surprisingly essential painterly solutions which make the tradition of this<br />
medium interesting again.<br />
