Harold Garde’s
People Places and Things. New Work
Emery Community Arts Center
University of Maine Farmington
6 July - 12 August, 2012
Curatorial Statement
Maine Master Harold Garde’s new works, bursting with vivid colors, engage subjects that are mutable, repeated and transformed
on a complex layered surface. The paintings in Harold Garde’s People Places and Things juxtapose surprising and ordinary subject
matter in a compositional interplay between the abstract and the figurative. The exhibition is an inspired return to familiar Garde
subjects, building to an even more playful and sometimes disquieting translation.
Harold Garde sees his works as fields of play, as open texts. His portraits, vases, coffee cups and kimono inhabit ambivalent
places and spaces, inviting the viewer into an intimate conversation. Pentimenti lurk in washes of pigment, drawing the viewer in
to build a deep, ongoing dialogue. The simplicity and immediacy of acrylic paint together with brushwork dancing between the raw
and lyrical evoke the artist’s abstract-expressionist background.
Harold Garde’s place in the world of art is defiant in its bridging of the modern and contemporary. He describes his role as an
instigator, challenging other artists to “explore courageously.” Living as a modernist in communities steeped in traditional painting,
Garde’s bold artistic spirit continues to generate tremendous energy and innovation.
