Notes from Terrie Berentsen, Executive Director
I wanted to take a moment to re-introduce myself and tell you a little about
me, my thoughts and my goals.
I’ve always had a passion for helping people and therefore structured my education
to allow me to work with and help those in need. I have lived in the beautiful
Scott Valley for over 25 years. I am a graduate of College of the Siskiyous
and I obtained my Bachelors of Sociology from Southern Oregon University and
my Master of Social Work from Chico State University.
My husband, Dennis, and I are blessed to have a blended family and between us
we have 7 boys, 7 girls, with our youngest set to join the Army in October. We
also have a combined
total of 26 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. We are very much country folks. A few of our interests
we enjoy are camping, quilting, gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with
family.
My continued goals are to provide quality compassionate care to our patients and their
families. Provide a healthy daily meal to our seniors in need and to continue to provide
community education for the whole of Siskiyou County.
I am blessed and honored to be in a position to make a difference in our community and for that I
thank each and every one of you. We are facing very uncertain economic times and I see how our
community reaches out with donations so that Madrone Hospice can reach out to those in need.
In closing, sometimes thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough but, we are so very
thankful to those of you who help us achieve our mission and goals.
There is no such thing in anyone’s life as an unimportant day. – Alexander Woollcott
Garden Signs Completed
In January we announced a grant from the Shasta Regional Community Foundation funded by
The James Irvine Foundation Arts Fund for “Public Arts in Celebration of Word, Literature and
Literacy” to put in 10 signs in the Volunteer Recognition Garden. The 10th sign was placed at the
end of August.
Ralph Starritt has done a fantastic job of making our ideas and scribbles into beautiful metal works
of art. Between the work of Jim and Judy Finses, our volunteers, and staff the gardens look their best
yet.
We invite you to come
and stroll through the
Volunteer recognition
Garden and admire the
work of Ralph Starritt and
our wonderful volunteers.
Better yet - come to the
Garden Party and celebrate
with us!

GENERAL DONORS
Callahan Community Church
Thank you for your donations!

Simpson University
Several months back, Madrone Hospice was asked by Simpson University to be a part of the rotation
for the nursing students who are pursuing their Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Discussions were held
with the Dean and faculty and now nursing student rotations with Madrone Hospice is a reality.
Simpson University is an accredited university by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
(WASC) and is located in Redding.
We had six students who shadowed our Case Managers and attended our Interdisciplinary Team
Meetings last month. They went to area facilities, patient’s homes and the Hospice House. Through their
rotations with us they got a real view of what it is to be a Hospice Nurse and Case Manager. The students
were in awe of our program and how well Madrone Hospice is supported by the Community.
The program we have set up with Simpson University is very similar to a rotation we currently have
with College of the Siskiyous where we give their nursing students the opportunity to shadow our nurses
in the field.
As a rural community, we are very fortunate to have these excellent educational facilities. Even more
so, the students who are excited to expand their knowledge base by reaching out into unfamiliar fields.
Without the instrumental push of the Simpson University and College of the Siskiyous students, this
program wouldn’t be possible.
Contentment – when you think of yesterday with pride and tomorrow with hope,
you can live peacefully with today.
Madrone isn’t just about hospice.
Chocolate helps to prevent dementia and cognitive impairment!
A recent study released by Medscape on August 14th, 2012 shows that intake of cocoa flavonoids is
linked to improved cognitive function, lowered insulin resistance and reduced blood pressure.
Decreased cognitive function, insulin resistance and high blood pressure have all been linked to
dementia. The study also showed better cognitive evolution over 10 years in aging adults as compared
to adults that did not take in cocoa flavonoids.
What does this mean for you? Eat more chocolate! Dark chocolate to be specific.
Flavonoids are also found in red wines, teas and some fruits, however, according to this
study, chocolate has a unique compound. There are also several chocolate drink mixes
on the market which advertise their high flavonoid content. So eat your chocolate,
drink it, too, and toast to improved cognitive function! Or at least toast to chocolate...
Thank you for your generosity…
Without all of your wonderful generosity we wouldn’t be able to do all that we do. Once in a while
though there are some donations that really stand out. We recently received our funding explanation for
Madrone Senior Services and found that that program is facing some cuts. To make up this difference,
we are planning a slew of fundraisers (see one example in the Garden Party Picnic Table Raffle on page
1). Upon reaching out to several local businesses they stepped right up to help.
Thank you Siskiyou Distributing for donating boxes for our Cinnamon Roll fundraiser. They made it
so much simpler to package them and nicer to present them! If you missed our cinnamon rolls in
August, never fear! This will be a monthly fundraiser. Please have your order in by the first Monday of
the month and we will have your freshly baked cinnamon rolls ready for pickup the following Friday.
They are $1 each or 6 for $5 and absolutely delicious!
Thank you Siskiyou Opportunity Center for donating the picnic table that will be raffled at the
Garden Party on September 12th! The Siskiyou Opportunity Center is a wonderful organization that
a year throughout Siskiyou County. If you need firewood, furniture, fencing, recycling information,
confidential shredding, copying, bulk mailing, contractor’s stakes, snack box vending, wood furniture and
gift items, custodial or landscaping services, or information on employment for people with disabilities
call them at 926-4698, 842-4110, or check out their web site at www.siskiyouoc.org.
