Used Book & Media Sale The Hoover Carnival will once again be the place to pick up some great deals on used BOOKS, DVDs, CDs,and VHS tapes. This year we will also collect PUZZLES for any age (with complete pieces, please.) Hoover families, please bring items to donate to the school foyer between May 10th and May 14th. All items will be priced between $1 and $3, and can be purchased at the Hoover Carnival (on May 14 th ) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Help with the setup of the Book Sale would be much appreciated in the gym after school on Friday, May 14th. District seeks students with special education needs Federal law requires that school districts provide special education services to eligible children with disabilities from kindergarten through age 21. Families with special needs children are encouraged to contact their local school to learn more about the special education services that may be available to them. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), disabilities that may require special education support include learning disabilities, physical orthopedic disabilities, other health impairments, mental retardation, hearing or vision impairments, speech or language disorders, emotional disturbance, traumatic brain injury or autism. A list of contacts and resources available through the Corvallis School District is available on the Special Education Services Web page. The IDEA legislation also provides services to special needs children from birth to age 3 through local education service districts. Hoover Student Council Collecting for the Homeless The Executive Student Council is sponsoring a fundraiser for the McKinney Homeless Education Program. We will be collecting personal and household items from April 20-May 14. Please donate shampoo, laundry detergent, toilet paper, soap, razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and feminine hygiene products. Bring these items to the office. Thank you for your support. Hoover Library News The book list for the 2010-2011 Oregon Battle of the Books is now listed on the Hoover Library website as well as the OBOB website http://oboblsta.pbworks.com/OBOB+BOOKS+FOR+2 010-2011. Students in grades 3-5 are encouraged to read as many of these 16 titles as they can. Summer is a great time to start reading these books! Reminder: Please help your students to be responsible and return their library book when it is due so that another student may read it! Due to a limited budget, the Hoover library may have only one copy of a popular or new book. Please be considerate! Keep the Library in mind when Spring cleaning. Donation books are accepted by Mrs. McIntyre in the Hoover Library if they are in good condition and appropriate for the collection. Thank You! Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis The Clubhouse After-School Program is open to all MEMBERS, grades 1-12, 2:45 p.m.–7:00 p.m. Cost is $25/year. STARS is an after school academic & enrichment program located at Adams, Garfield, Hoover, Jefferson, Mt View & Wilson elementary schools. STARS operates 2:30-6:00pm, M-F. We offer full time and part time schedules, including drop-in days. Scholarships are available. The Club PLUS After-School Program is required for all kindergarten students this year. It is open to children in grades K-3, providing a more structured environment for younger members. Cost is $60/month. Registration for Summer Day Camp for grades 1-5 begins April 15. The program runs from 6/21 – 9/3 and cost is $150/week, 7:30am-6pm, M-F, with optional weekly field trips at an additional fee. Price includes all meals, camp T-shirt, and a Thursday field trip for all campers. Scholarships are available. The Clubhouse will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 31. The Clubhouse is no longer open on Saturdays for the remainder of the school year. Registration for T-ball and coach-pitch baseball for ages 5-8 is open until June 1. Cost is $50. Teams are co-ed, season runs mid-June – late July. Current Membership is required for all programs. Register for all programs online at www.bgccorvallis.org. Please join us at the Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, May 8th for a FREE funfilled day with lots of family activities. We will begin the day with a bike parade at 10am and have prize drawings every half hour until 3pm. There will be dental, vision, and chiropractic screenings, games, raffles, balloons, and healthy snacks. We plan to have the police and fire departments present too! See you all there! Lifeskill for the month: Integrity Corvallis Camerata to Perform Vivaldi “Four Seasons” The Corvallis Camerata String Orchestra will perform the classical masterwork “The Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi for two special performances. The Portland performance will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1126 SW Park Avenue in downtown Portland on Saturday, May 8. The Corvallis performance will be on Wednesday, May 12 in the sanctuary of the First Methodist Church, 11 th and Monroe St. Both performances begin at 7:30PM. Tickets are $5 for adults. Students are free. Tickets for the Corvallis performance will be available at Gracewinds Music in Corvallis and from Camerata members beginning May 1. Tickets for the Portland performance will be available at the door beginning at 6:30PM on the performance night. Each of the four “Season’s” concerti will feature a different student violin soloist. La primavera (Spring) will be performed by Brian Lach. L’estate (Summer) will be performed by Patrick Yun. Kayla Reiman will be performing L’autunno (Autumn) and L’inverno (Winter) will be performed by Rebecca Lomnicky. All of the student soloists are seniors and long-term members of the Corvallis orchestra program. The word “Camerata” roughly translates to mean “a group of friends who share a similar interest in arts and academics”. The Camerata is the top orchestra in the Corvallis School District’s award winning orchestra program. The Camerata has won numerous honors including recent state and NW championships and been invited to perform throughout the Pacific Northwest. In the summer of 2008, The Camerata members come from both Crescent Valley and Corvallis High Schools. The orchestra is conducted by Charles Creighton who is in his 28 th and final year with the Corvallis School District. Vivaldi’s “Four Season’s” is one of the world’s most enduring and beloved classical favorites. Written in 1725, the composer uses musical moods, motifs and special string effects to capture the feeling of each of the seasons. “After 285 years, the music is still vibrant and relevant” says Creighton. “Our kids play with a very fresh vitality that brings the music alive”. “It will be a great show!” Talk with your child about ways you both can use this lifeskill every day!
