Dear Hoover Community,
Principal’s Corner
As spring arrives it’s a good time to be reminded of
some safe and healthy behaviors that all of us should
pay attention to. In so doing, everyone will benefit.
May is Walk & Bike to School MONTH! Make it your
goal to get your kids to and from school by their own
(and your own) fuel, by walking, biking, or scootering
to school. This will greatly benefit everyone who
participates as well as the greater Hoover community
by reducing the traffic in the parking lot, resulting in a
safer place for pedestrians, cleaner air, and healthier
people.
Of course, a few of you may not be able to Walk, Bike
or Scooter to school every day, so here are a few
reminders of our parking lot etiquette that will help
everyone be Safe, Responsible and Respectful while
dropping off or picking up your children using an
automobile.
1. Be patient and courteous. If someone’s signaling
a desire to change lanes, please allow them to do
so.
2. Only unload and load your children if you are in
lane 1 (closest to the school), or lane 2. When
unloading in lane 2 you may walk your child to the
sidewalk and then return to your car. When
loading from lane 2 you must stay with your
vehicle and wait for a staff member to bring your
child to your car or give your child the okay to
load.
3. Lane 3 is a flow through lane. If you are unable to
merge into lane 2 or lane 1, parents should exit at
the east end and re-enter the parking lot with the
goal of being able to merge. Just sitting and
waiting in the 3 rd lane for an opening in lane 2
often creates a traffic back up that ends all the
way out in to Walnut Blvd. This makes the
pedestrian crosswalk a much more confusing and
dangerous place for our students and parents who
are walking to and from school.
4. To avoid the parking lot traffic crunch altogether,
parents might find it beneficial to park across
Walnut in the neighborhood or at the Northwest
Hills Church and walk to and from the school.
This can actually add a nice little walk for you and
your children before the busy school and work day
begins.
5. When waiting for your child to load at the end of
the day, please be sure to turn off your engine.
The fumes from idling vehicles are a major
contributor to unhealthy air around our school.
6. If you have a child in K through 2 nd , and another
child in 3 rd through 5 th , please unload both
children at the same time (typically at the primary
end of the parking lot), rather than unloading one
at the primary side and the other the intermediate
side of the school, which really extends your time
negotiating the traffic, increasing the congestion
and the pollution. Your older child can easily walk
from the primary side to his/her classroom,
probably quicker than you’d get them there by
transporting them the extra 200 feet in your car.
It may seem to ignore one of these “rules” it shouldn’t
be a big deal. After all, it just “little ol’ me”. Please
keep in mind that 20, or 50, or 100 people ignoring
just one of these rules can turn our parking lot in to a
congested and stressful situation for many, and a
potentially unsafe place for our children.
If everyone parent would keep our three rules in mind
– Be Safe, Be Respectful, & Be Responsible, when
coming and going from school, everyone will benefit.
If we add one more “rule” for the rest of the year – Be
Healthy - then everyone will benefit even more!
Thanks to each of you for all that you do to make
Hoover a great school, especially in how you treat one
another in our wild and crazy parking lot!
Let’s make May our Safest and Healthiest
month…maybe even extend that goal in to June!
Wouldn’t that be nice!
Respectfully,
Bryan Traylor, Principal
Happy Spring Hoover Families!
This is a very busy spring with Hoover/HPTO
activities!
Coming up first is our Carnival/Raffle/Auction on
Friday, May 14. The carnival is an excellent
opportunity to volunteer for an hour shift and help
make this a fun evening. Please contact Monica
Turkisher at monicarob@comcast.net to sign up for a
shift. Many volunteers are needed to continue having
this event for our children and families.
Our Disneyland raffle has begun and will culminate
in a drawing at the end of the carnival. You need not
be present to win, so see if those friends and
neighbors are ready for a California trip!!
This year's silent auction will be a bigger and better
affair featuring ceramic platters designed and painted
by each classroom. Give your child a lasting memento
of their school year and classmates.
We will have a proof and ordering opportunities for the
Hoover all-school picture which was taken on
Thursday. The students look great in their Husky Blue
and the picture is a great keepsake of their school
year.
We have a spring book sale coming this month. HPTO
decided to work with a local business rather than the
Scholastic company for this sale. Grass Roots,
working with the teachers have put together a quality
list of titles for summer reading. More information will
be coming on this event.
UPCOMING CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Our school year's activities will wrap up with the
Hoover Field Day on June 14. This is another
excellent opportunity for volunteering and really can't
happen without your help. The kids love to have their
parents there and you have the opportunity of meeting
other parents and being part of a great end of school
celebration!
Our next and probably last HPTO meeting of this
school year will be next Tuesday, May 11, at 7:00 pm
in the Hoover library. We will have a better idea of our
budget and possible class configurations at that time.
We would also like your input on HPTO funding for
Hoover.
Would you like our money to be used for enrichment
(art or music opportunities, assemblies, technology
etc.) or have a more direct impact on classroom size
and staffing? Please come to the meeting and share
your ideas.
We have a couple of HPTO positions open for next
year. We are looking for a new treasurer and
President-elect. Rebecca Sauret is leaving as
treasurer, having organized our finances and leaving
a very easy, workable system in place. Terry Comer is
our incoming President and a new President-elect will
have a year of "shadowing" to get comfortable with the
position.
If you are interested in either of these positions,
please call Marcy Hermens at 541-757-5958 or
Melinda Lind at 541-754-6428. We hope to see you
on Tuesday!
District seeks students with
special education needs
Federal law requires that school districts provide
special education services to eligible children with
disabilities from kindergarten through age 21. Families
with special needs children are encouraged to contact
their local school to learn more about the special
education services that may be available to them.
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act (IDEA), disabilities that may require special
education support include learning disabilities,
physical orthopedic disabilities, other health
impairments, mental retardation, hearing or vision
impairments, speech or language disorders, emotional
disturbance, traumatic brain injury or autism.
A list of contacts and resources available through the
Corvallis School District is available on the Special
Education Services Web page.
The IDEA legislation also provides services to special
needs children from birth to age 3 through local
education service districts. For information about early
intervention programs, call 753-1202, ext. 111.
Corvallis Camerata to Perform
Vivaldi “Four Seasons”
The Corvallis Camerata String Orchestra will perform
the classical masterwork “The Four Seasons” by
Antonio Vivaldi for two special performances. The
Portland performance will be held at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ, 1126 SW
Park Avenue in downtown Portland on Saturday, May
8. The Corvallis performance will be on Wednesday,
May 12 in the sanctuary of the First Methodist Church,
11 th and Monroe St. Both performances begin at
7:30PM. Tickets are $5 for adults. Students are free.
Tickets for the Corvallis performance will be available
at Gracewinds Music in Corvallis and from Camerata
members beginning May 1. Tickets for the Portland
performance will be available at the door beginning at
6:30PM on the performance night.
Each of the four “Season’s” concerti will feature a
different student violin soloist. La primavera (Spring)
will be performed by Brian Lach. L’estate (Summer)
will be performed by Patrick Yun. Kayla Reiman will
be performing L’autunno (Autumn) and L’inverno
(Winter) will be performed by Rebecca Lomnicky. All
of the student soloists are seniors and long-term
members of the Corvallis orchestra program.
The word “Camerata” roughly translates to mean “a
group of friends who share a similar interest in arts
and academics”. The Camerata is the top orchestra in
the Corvallis School District’s award winning orchestra
program. The Camerata has won numerous honors
including recent state and NW championships and
been invited to perform throughout the Pacific
Northwest. In the summer of 2008,
The Camerata members come from both Crescent
Valley and Corvallis High Schools. The orchestra is
conducted by Charles Creighton who is in his 28 th and
final year with the Corvallis School District.
Vivaldi’s “Four Season’s” is one of the world’s most
enduring and beloved classical favorites. Written in
1725, the composer uses musical moods, motifs and
special string effects to capture the feeling of each of
the seasons.
“After 285 years, the music is still vibrant and relevant”
says Creighton. “Our kids play with a very fresh vitality
that brings the music alive”. “It will be a great show!”
Talk with your child about ways you both can use this lifeskill every day!
Before School Care Fees for
School Year 2010-2011
Since the 2006-2007 school year, Before-School
childcare has been available to families at a cost
of $25 per child per month.
The cost was calculated to cover the cost of staff
providing this non-educational service to families
needing an early care option. While staffing costs
have risen, the cost for families to use the
program has remained unchanged since 2006.
For the 2010-2011 school year, the cost for
the early morning childcare program will
increase to $30 per child per month.
Please call the Hoover Office at (541) 757-5958 if
you have any questions regarding the before
school care program.
Late to Class / Tardiness
Students are considered tardy if they are not in
the classroom ready to learn at 8:20 a.m.
Beginning the school day on time is crucial.
Students must be on time in order to begin the
day with peers, receive necessary instructions
and be a contributing member of the group.
When a child is late for class it often interrupts
other students’ learning.
Sometimes tardiness is unavoidable; Oregon
State Statute defines excusable absences as
illness or emergency within the family.
If your child does arrive late it is important that
they check in at the office. Otherwise they will be
marked as absent.
Kindergarten Transfer Process for
2010-2011 Closes Soon
Transfer applications for children entering
kindergarten in 2010-2011 will be accepted by the
Corvallis School District electronically between April 1,
2010, and May 14, 2010.
The on-line application is available now through the
Corvallis School District website at
http://www.csd509j.net. If you do not have access at
home, free internet access is available at the District
Office, 1555 SW 35 th Street, or at the Corvallis Public
Library.
Any transfers submitted after the May deadline will be
added to a waiting list as they arrive and held until late
August when principals will have a chance to review
and determine space availability. Families should
enroll at their home area school until a determination
is made.
For more information or assistance, please call the
District Receptionist at 757-5811.
Hoover School Talent Show
The Hoover Executive Student Council will once again
be sponsoring a talent show this spring. It is
scheduled to be held on Friday, June 4 th .
The talent show is open for 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th graders to
participate in, but all grade levels come to watch it.
If your 3 rd /4 th /5 th grade child would like to perform in
the show, he or she must fill out an audition form,
have it signed by you, and turn it into the office.
Audition forms must be received by the afternoon
of May 14 th .
Auditions will be held during lunch recesses from May
11 th through May 25 th . The audition schedule will be
posted outside the office and the day’s acts will be
announced during morning announcements.
Keep in mind: We will only have time for 25 acts, so
not everyone will automatically get to perform in the
talent show if we have more than 25 acts auditioning.
Acts are to be no longer than 3 minutes in length,
must be appropriate for all ages, and must not include
lip-synching. Students may perform solo acts, or may
work in groups. However, each student in the act
must turn in a signed audition form.
The school will provide a microphone, and CD player
as well as a piano. Other props or equipment may be
arranged upon request, but needs to be requested
prior to the audition.
Families, of course, are encouraged to come enjoy
the Talent Show on June 4 th at 1:15 p.m. in the gym.
Please do not call your child’s classroom directly
during the school day to make plans as this
interrupts classroom instruction. Thank you for
your help with this.
Free/Reduced Meal Program
Parents - your child(ren) may be eligible for free meals
(breakfast and lunch), especially if you have recently
lost your job or had your work hours reduced. You are
also automatically eligible if you have been approved
for Food Stamps.
You can qualify for Free Meals by picking up an
application in the school office or by contacting Marv
Newcombe at District Food Services (757-5903).
Applying for Free or Reduced Meals can be done
anytime during the year.
Lunch Money
Have you seen your child come home with a red
stamp on their hand or an orange reminder slip? If so,
it means that your child’s meal account is out of
money. “Lunch” money in any amount can be
brought to the school office to be deposited into meal
accounts.
If you’re not sure what the balance is in your child’s
meal account, please call the office at 757-5958 and
we will help you.
Medication at School
All medication, including cough drops, must be
turned into the office with a completed Medical
Authorization/Administration Form. District
policy states that we need to have the medication
in the original container, and if it is a prescription,
the label must be attached to the container.
Hoover SCRIP Program
Please support Hoover by buying Scrip! Hoover buys
popular gift cards from local and national businesses
at a discount and sells them to you at face value.
Hoover then earns 2-40% on every dollar that you
spend!
Who doesn't frequent Starbucks, Coffee Culture, Fred
Meyer, American Dream, or Safeway (just to give a
few examples!)? If you buy $10 of Coffee Culture
scrip, Hoover earns 1$ of that, and you still have $10
to spend at Coffee Culture! What a great deal for
Hoover!!
You can buy scrip by stopping by the Scrip table in the
afternoons, buying directly from the office, or
contacting Laura Wilson at 541-207-3111 or
wilsonknittel@mac.com.
The Scrip table will be open during the Hoover
Carnival, so come prepared with cash or your
checkbook!!!
