Missouri 4-H Projects
In addition to making friends, another great thing about 4-H is exploring your interests with 4-H projects. In the
following pages you will discover many opportunities and resources to support you as a 4-H member, project leader, or
parent. 4-H projects are designed for learners in small project groups of two to 10 youths. However, many of these projects
can be easily adapted for larger groups and used in club, camp, afterschool or school classroom settings. Additional
resources to support these individual projects can be found online: http://4h.missouri.edu/projects/
New feature in the Clover!
Many of the following projects offer Project Briefs that are available for download, free of charge. Project Briefs are two-page
overviews of a project; they include activity and community service ideas, objectives, Show Me Character guidelines, fair
project ideas, Show Me Standards and project resources. These briefs are a supplement to the project curriculum.
Aerospace (AE)
The excitement and dreams you may experience about sending a rocket into space, making a first solo flight,
becoming an astronaut or perhaps someday visiting other planets, and learning what they provide can be exciting.
In the aerospace projects you will enjoy learning more about your dreams through hands-on experiences and group
interaction.
Agronomy is the science of utilizing plants for food, fuel, feed, and fiber. 4-H projects in agronomy can explore the
areas of plant genetics, plant physiology, soil science and even the weather! Agronomy is really cool because it combines
sciences like biology, chemistry, ecology, earth science and genetics. As a career choice, agronomists help in producing
food, creating healthier food, managing environmental impacts and creating energy from plants. Just imagine, you might
invent a fuel for our cars.
Have you ever seen an Ozark Hellbender? Do you know the difference between a skink and a glass lizard? Can you
name and identify the venomous snakes of Missouri? What’s a newt, anyway? Did you realize that Missouri is
home to 13 native species of lizards and 17 species of turtles — several which are listed on the endangered species
list? Step outside and into the natural world; become an amateur herpetologist; discover interesting facts about Missouri
amphibians and reptiles. If you’d like, try your hand at raising reptiles and/or amphibians in your own vivarium, of course
while observing all Missouri regulations.
Creating Computer Games and Animation
Learn computer programming by creating your own games and animations. This 4-H project uses two easy to use
but powerful computer programming environments created especially for kids! Program fun animations and put the
characters into computer games that you create. Use either Scratch or Alice programming environment or try both to
create you computer masterpiece. Scratch is recommended for third-grade through high school students, and Alice is
recommended for middle school students through high school.
CP895 Scratch
Scratch takes advantage of advances in computing power
and interface design to make programming more engaging
and accessible for children, teens and others who are
learning to program. To create programs in Scratch, you
simply snap graphical blocks together into stacks. The
blocks are designed to fit together only in ways that make
syntactic sense, so there are no syntax errors. Different data
types have different shapes, eliminating type mismatches.
You can make changes to stacks even as programs are
running, so it is easy to experiment with new ideas. With
Scratch, you can create programs that control and mix
graphics, animations, music, and sound.”
Consumer savvy (CS)
CP896 Alice
Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that
makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story,
playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web.
Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a
student’s first exposure to object-oriented programming.
It allows students to learn fundamental programming
concepts in the context of creating animated movies and
simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people,
animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and
students create a program to animate the objects.
Filmmaking (FM)
270 Filmmaking
Sharing your creativity with the world can be fun, but doing so with solid filmmaking skills is even better. Many
important life skills can be developed through filmmaking, including communication, self-expression, decision-making,
problem-solving and critical thinking. Learn at your own pace, through a series of video modules from National 4-H, and
check with your 4-H office for the next regional filmmaker's training. Through local training, national resources and special
events like FilmFest 4-H, you can attain the skills to express your vision at the highest level!
Resources:
1. A collection of filmmaking resources can be found at http://4h.missouri.edu/go/events/filmfest/
Geology (GG)
Karst, semi-precious gems, Ozarkite, the state mineral, the Viburnum Trend, a rock collection, caves, volcanoes,
Elephant Rocks and lapidary are just some of the topics you might pursue in your geology project. Geology is the
study of the earth. Much of our knowledge about the earth comes from the rocks, minerals and fossils that surround us.
Explore the earth — in your backyard, a creek bed, a road cut, anywhere you go. Take field trips, collect specimens, develop
your collection and exhibit at the fair. Learn the basics and pursue special interests.
Geospatial (GS)
GS991 — Exploring Spaces, Going Places
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are hot technologies! Exploring Spaces,
Going Places explores the world of geospatial science and goes where no 4-H project has ever gone before! Accessed entirely
on one CD, the three youth levels and group guide are valuable resources to anyone interested in geospatial technology,
geographic education, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
GS‑Geospatial — Beginner
Where in the world are you? Young people are introduced to new ways of thinking about geographic positions, navigational
tools (like GPS, compasses, maps and globes), identifying locations, measuring distances and more. Project activities like
“Mega Bite’s Mystery”, “Map Teller”, “Data Everywhere!” and “The Navigator” make learning fun!
GS‑Geospatial — Intermediate
Future map-makers will learn how to collect data, combine the data with geographical positions and then make their own
maps. Maps of school grounds, neighborhoods, farms or towns, states and beyond can be made. The choice is theirs!
GS‑Geospatial — Advanced
Can maps solve problems? Can they lower traffic congestion, pinpoint pollution sources, boost tourism, reduce disease and
control crime? Advanced learners find solutions to problems like these as they develop and use multi-layered maps to solve
complex problems within their own communities.
GS‑Geospatial Helper’s Guide
The Helper’s Guide supports group activities and group fun. The guide provides the helper with the background and
information needed to introduce learners to the world of geospatial concepts, GPS, magnetic compass, maps and GIS.
Activities include GPS Treasure Hunt, As the Ring Turns, Navigational Skillathon, I-M-A-G-E Bingo, Letterboxing, GPS
Search and Rescue - Find Bubba! and much more!
The University of Missouri Extension Garden
’n Grow Program is a volunteer gardening
program designed to educate young people
about horticulture. Young people ages 8-12 are
encouraged to participate. Not only will they
learn about gardening, but also science, math,
social studies, language arts — and have fun
while learning! Each participant will plant and
harvest his or her vegetables for home use and
donation to the local food bank. The goals of
this program are to teach young gardeners the
pleasures of being outdoors and instill in them
the importance of helping others. Garden ’n
Grow participants will develop a sense of self,
a sense of usefulness and purpose, a sense of
From sharing an important thought to nailing that first big job interview, public speaking skills are extremely
important. Public speaking allows you to challenge yourself and succeed in developing communication skills, while having
fun and building friendships. Although public speaking is among the most common of fears, every 4-H member can to
do this well and even enjoy it! Start building these skills in your 4-H club, expand them at larger events like the Public
Speaking Academy, and exercise them on a bigger stage at the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest. If you take time to invest
in yourself, the benefits of public speaking skills will last a lifetime.
Robotics (RO)
Exploring 4-H Robotics is an ideal way to introduce science, math, engineering and technology while teaching
life skills. Through hands-on activities, the 4-H Robotics projects teach basic concepts related to robotic subsystems
such as structure, power, sensors, control and programming. These concepts are the foundation for building robots and
robotic subsystems from a variety of materials and packaged kits. 4-H Robotics has projects for a wide variety of interests
and available resources. Virtual Robotics (project RO882) teaches about robots with a computer game. Junk Drawer
Robotics (project RO881) teaches robotic concepts with low-cost materials. Robotics Platforms (project RO883) is for
groups with access to a robotics kit. FIRST Robotics (project RO885) is participation in a 4-H FIRST team. General 4-H
Robotics (project RO886) is for learning about robotics with goals or materials that are not a good fit with the other 4-H
Robotics projects.
RO881 Junk Drawer Robotics
In each module of this project, you will learn about a different aspect of robotics, and design and build a robot. This project
emphasizes developing knowledge and skills while you design and build you own robot devices. You will use your Robotics
Notebook to record your learning experiences, robotic designs and the data from your investigations.
The Junk Drawer Robotics curriculum has three books. In Book 1 (Y8810), Give Robots a Hand, you will explore the design
and function of robotic arms, hands and grippers, and build a robotic arm that really moves! In Book 2 (Y8811), Robots on the
Move, you will design and build machines that roll, slide, draw, or move underwater, and you will explore robot mobility —
movement, power transfer and locomotion. Book 3 (Y8812) Mechatronics, is all about the connection between the mechanical
and electronic elements of robots. You will explore sensors, write programs, build circuits and design your own robot.
The modules in this track can be used with a variety of commercial kits, including NXT, TETRIX, CEENBoT and Vex. This
track has three levels and 11 modules. As you experience each module in a level, you will develop scientific knowledge and
technological understanding that enables you to master the challenge presented at the end of that level. As you progress,
the Robotics Notebook helps you record your progress and serves as an important learning tool. Each level builds upon the
prior level as you develop a broader and deeper understanding of robotics.
As you progress through Robotics Platforms, you will use your robotics kit to build a robot and learn about how it works
in Level 1 (Modules 1-5). In Level 2 (Modules 6-10), you will investigate the sensors in your kit, and learn to program your
robot using sensors, loops and conditional statements. By the time you get to Level 3, you will understand the capabilities
and limitations of your robot kit and be ready to tackle the challenges in Module 11.
Breaking clays, punching paper, busting caps, flinging arrow and counting Xs are all part of the 4-H Shooting
Sports project. Safety first — but lots of fun! The Shooting Sports project includes many options for 4-H members. You
will learn safe gun handling skills, and sound fundamentals of shooting under the guidance of caring and knowledgeable
adult volunteers.
4-H Shooting Sports is a unique 4-H project in that there are social issues and concerns with the Shooting Sports
project that other projects do not deal with. Because of this uniqueness, Missouri 4-H has developed some special
guidelines and policies for the Shooting Sports projects. 4-H members, parents and leaders are responsible to understand
and follow these policies.
A 4-H member may only be enrolled in a 4-H Shooting Sports project if it is led by a certified 4-H Shooting Sports
volunteer. There is NO exception to this policy for a parent working with his or her own child. Only a certified 4-H
Shooting Sports volunteer may lead any 4-H member in a 4-H Shooting Sports project.
4-H Leader Certification Workshops are conducted twice annually by a team of state 4-H instructors, usually on the first
weekends in October and April. Contact your 4-H youth development staff about these leader workshops. Leader materials
are distributed only at the leader workshops.
Project completion hours: Each shooting sports discipline/project number requires a minimum of 10 hours of
instruction and/or practice under the direction of a 4-H certified leader.
Safety requirements
✔ All 4-H members wishing to enroll in a Shooting Sports project (SS741-SS749) for the first time must complete 6
hours of instruction in shooting sports safety. First year Shooting Sports members are to enroll and participate
in a SS740 Shooting Sports Safety project/class unless they have a Missouri Hunter Education card/certificate.
Young people are encouraged to enroll in a shooting sports discipline project (SS741-SS749) during the same
year. The SS740 project does not count against the project limitation.
✔ Procedure for the SS740 Shooting Sports Safety project:
• Completed in a short time period — in two or three meetings within a week.
• Local certified 4-H Shooting Sports volunteers present the 6 hours of safety instruction.
• All shooting disciplines of the 4-H Shooting Sports program are to be covered in the 6 hours of safety.
• Instructors must use the draft 4-H SS Safety Curriculum as the core curriculum, available from your local
University of Missouri Extension center.
• The SS740 Shooting Sports Safety course must be completed prior to the youth participating in a
discipline project (SS741-SS749) but need only complete it once.
• Members with a Missouri Hunter Education card/certificate are exempt from the 6-hour safety requirement
— though the SS740 class is still strongly recommended. Instructors should record and keep the
Hunter Education certificate number of each member.
• It is strongly suggested that 8- and 9-year-old members repeat the safety instruction a second year.
* Ages for the shooting sports project are based on 4-H age (age on Dec. 31 of the current program year).
LG7411 NEW! S.T.E.M. Connections for 4-H Shooting Sports Projects, $10
S.T.E.M. stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The hands-on activities in this guide will help members
understand how science connects to the shooting sports. Activities may be used at any time during the year
— but may be most appropriate when weather conditions prevent outside activity or as a precursor to discipline
instruction. This leader guide is appropriate for use in any or all of the shooting disciplines. Teen leaders or older
youths have an opportunity to demonstrate leadership by planning and conducting the activities, with approval
and guidance of the certified leaders.
SS990 Western Heritage and Cowboy Shooting
This program was piloted in six Missouri counties in 2011 and 2012. Now, additional county programs that meet specific
requirements can participate. In order to offer this program, volunteer leaders must be trained and certified by 4-H. The
western heritage training and certification workshop is conducted separately from the regular workshop and is offered
only once a year.
Check with your local MU Extension center to see if it is offered in your county — only enroll if your county is approved.
This project is not eligible for self-determination.
Purpose: to provide an avenue for 4-H members to experience the lifestyles and cultures of the Old West through a living
history approach to learning.
The Cowboy Action Shooting portion of this project is the fastest-paced, most exciting and spectator-friendly project
in 4-H shooting sports. Shooters dressed in Old West garb compete against the clock by firing at steel targets at various
distances with period firearms such as single-action revolvers, lever-action rifles and double-barreled shotguns. This is
NOT mounted shooting — horses are not involved with the shooting portion of this project.
Objectives:
• Preserve and gain an appreciation for the heritage of
the Old West within the time period of 1860-1900.
• Teach in a living history style by using historically
accurate firearms, clothing and accessories while
participating in the 4-H Western Heritage Project.
• Instill in 4-H members an investigative interest in
Missouri and western history that will lead to personal
research and increased knowledge of the Old West.
Participation guidelines: 4-H members, 11-18 years of age
Having a natural compassion towards animals and being interested in science is what leads most veterinarians
into their field. Learn the role a veterinarian plays in practicing animal and public health while participating in many
hands-on activities. These activities will help you learn about the different equipment used by veterinarians, diseases and
health problems, and career opportunities as a veterinarian or volunteer.
Whether alligator snapping turtles, butterflies, white-tailed deer or red-tailed hawks, all animals have basic
habitat needs that must be supplied in order for their species to survive and thrive. What can be learned
and done in the 4-H Wildlife project is limited only by your imagination and knowledge. Study the habits
and habitat of Missouri wildlife, learn about plant succession and it’s affect on various species, identify
wildlife foods, identify wildlife species by their tracks, skulls, furs or feathers. You are encouraged to put your
knowledge to practical use by designing, implementing and completing a habitat improvement project.
Habitat Opportunity:
Million Tree Project
Trees and shrubs provide crucial
habitat for some wildlife species.
Missouri 4-H members, families,
project groups, community
clubs, afterschool clubs, school
enrichment programs, and camps
are invited to participate in the
4-H Million Tree Project. This
daunting project was conceived
after a Pacifica, Calif., 4-H
member decided to do something
to combat global climate change.
Here is a 4-H service project
that improves the quality of our
environment. Visit http://4h.
