imagine doing without demineralized water as a pure
medium. Whether it is for diluting solutions, for preparing
reagents, for rinsing and washing processes or for producing
chemical and pharmaceutical products - demineralized
water is required. And every day new, interesting applications
are found.
Mixed-bed water demineralizers for service regeneration
allow easy and reasonable preparation of pure, demineralized
water. The following recommendations speak for the
use of these compact water purifying systems:

Besides undissolved impurities (particulates, organic components, germs,
bacteria) most water contains dissolved ions (minerals and metals) in
various concentrations. Of these, metals and hydrogen are cations (pos.
charged) and acid residues and hydroxyl ions are anions (neg.charged).
Special cation- and anion-exchanger resins are used in the water
preparation for removing these dissolved (dissociated) ions. These resins
absorb the ions that are dissolved in the water and consequently release
the equivalent quantity of other ions similarly charged into the water.
The cations dissolved in the water (e.g.: Mg ++ ,
Ca ++ , Na + , K + ) are exchanged for H + -ions by the
cation resins, the anions (e.g. CI- -- -- , NO , SO4 ) for

OH- - groups by the anion resins.
When the ion exchanger resins are saturated
(exhausted) they can be reactivated by reversing
the charging process with suitable regenerating
agents.
The exhausted mixed-bed ion-exchanger resins
are regenerated by HERCO in a central regeneration
station. Compared with ion-exchange systems
that are regenerated on site, mixed-bed units for
service regeneration do not produce any waste
water for the customer. Consequently the purchase
and operating costs for an officially approved neutralizing
system can be saved completely.

Producing Quality
HERCO-destillo-Water Demineralizers require no energy for preparing
pure water. Only the conductivity measuring instrument, that constantly
controls the pure water quality, has a minimal current consumption of
about 2 Watts. The units are simply connected to the drinking water supply.
The existing supply pressure is used for operation.
The production costs for pure, demineralized water depend on the
total dissolved solids content of the water to be demineralized. Due to
their high performance rate, destillo-Water Demineralizers also achieve
production prices of less than 0,05 € per litre pure water, even at a total
dissolved solids (TDS) level of 356 ppm as CaCO 3 (approx. 600 µS/cm).
If the pure water requirement is a lot more than 150 litres a day, the production
costs per litre can be reduced quite considerably again by using
the hercopur-Reverse Osmosis System
HERCO-destillo-Water Demineralizers produce water of the highest
quality. The mixture ratio of the ion-exchanger resins (anion and cation exchangers)
and the special water flow of HERCO-destillo-Units guarantee
that very low conductivities are achieved over a longer period.
If we take a limit conductivity of 20 µS/cm as a basis for determining the
overall exchange capacity, the following demineralization rates are the
result:

This small unit with disposable resin was specially designed for users with
low requirements of high quality pure water. This makes the destillo 2 the
ideal unit for:

2 is particularly suitable for use in countries where service is not possible

The destillo 2 can be simply mounted to the wall
within reach of one´s working place. It prepares
up to 50 litres demineralized water per hour and
has a pure water capacity of 320 litres at a TDS
of 178 ppm as CaCO 3.
The pure water quality is continually monitored by
a conductivity meter. When the maximum permissible
conductivity (e.g. 20 µS/cm) is achieved the
exhausted mixed-bed demineralizer cartridge is
simply exchanged for a new cartridge with active
ion-exchanger resin.
What happens to the exhausted cartridge?
No problem. Both the cartridge shell made of
polyethylene and the resins are completely harmless
and do not have to be disposed of in any
special way.

The pressureless HERCO-destillo-Units made of plastic are more or less
classic among mixed-bed water demineralizers. They are extremely reasonable
to purchase, easing the investment decision for an efficient unit
for the preparation of pure water.
Unlike the pressurized water demineralizers made of stainless steel, these
units, with cartridges made of coloured polyethylene, are operated without
any pressure. They can be connected to any drinking water tap if an
unrestricted pure water outlet can be guaranteed.

The pure water quality is continually monitored by a
conductivity meter. This conductivity meter (Type 330 S)
with analogue display has a measuring range from 0.2 to
100 µS/cm and fits on all cartridge types belonging to the
pressureless destillo-series. It is screwed directly onto the
cartridge. The result is a unit with a compact design that
is easy to install.
Only quality mixed-bed resins with permanent regeneration
qualities are used in the pressureless destillo 10
unit. It is recommended to order a second cartridge as a
spare when buying a HERCO-destillo-Unit. This is the
only way to ensure continued pure water preparation
while the exhausted cartridge is being regenerated.

The ultimate among mixed-bed water demineralizers are the pressure
resistant units belonging to the HERCO-destillo dE series. The cartridges
made of V4A-stainless steel can resist pressure up to 10 bar. They can be
used for many different applications and are particularly suitable for:

The pressure resistant HERCO-destillo-Units are best suited for installation
in laboratory furniture, cabinets and housings, due to their compact
design. They offer a large number of installation alternatives and allow
ideal adaptation to individual user requirements.
The special water distribution system – made completely of stainless Steel
– and the water flow from top to bottom provide an ideal flow accross the
resin bed. Hence the exchanger capacity is used to a maximum, the flow
capacity is increased and the pressure loss minimized.

The used resins are recycled after regeneration. Of
course, they are subjected to stringent quality controls
an a continuous rejuvenating process through
the permanent addition of brand new quality resins.
