In almost all areas, from research to production, one cannot<br />

imagine doing without demineralized water as a pure<br />

medium. Whether it is for diluting solutions, for preparing<br />

reagents, for rinsing and washing processes or for producing<br />

chemical and pharmaceutical products - demineralized<br />

water is required. And every day new, interesting applications<br />

are found.<br />

Mixed-bed water demineralizers for service regeneration<br />

allow easy and reasonable preparation of pure, demineralized<br />

water. The following recommendations speak for the<br />

use of these compact water purifying systems:<br />

exchange“ principle<br />

(simplified illustration)<br />

Besides undissolved impurities (particulates, organic components, germs,<br />

bacteria) most water contains dissolved ions (minerals and metals) in<br />

various concentrations. Of these, metals and hydrogen are cations (pos.<br />

charged) and acid residues and hydroxyl ions are anions (neg.charged).<br />

Special cation- and anion-exchanger resins are used in the water<br />

preparation for removing these dissolved (dissociated) ions. These resins<br />

absorb the ions that are dissolved in the water and consequently release<br />

the equivalent quantity of other ions similarly charged into the water.<br />

The cations dissolved in the water (e.g.: Mg ++ ,<br />

Ca ++ , Na + , K + ) are exchanged for H + -ions by the<br />

cation resins, the anions (e.g. CI- -- -- , NO , SO4 ) for<br />

OH- - groups by the anion resins.<br />

When the ion exchanger resins are saturated<br />

(exhausted) they can be reactivated by reversing<br />

the charging process with suitable regenerating<br />

agents.<br />

The exhausted mixed-bed ion-exchanger resins<br />

are regenerated by HERCO in a central regeneration<br />

station. Compared with ion-exchange systems<br />

that are regenerated on site, mixed-bed units for<br />

service regeneration do not produce any waste<br />

water for the customer. Consequently the purchase<br />

and operating costs for an officially approved neutralizing<br />

system can be saved completely.<br />

Producing Quality<br />

HERCO-destillo-Water Demineralizers require no energy for preparing<br />

pure water. Only the conductivity measuring instrument, that constantly<br />

controls the pure water quality, has a minimal current consumption of<br />

about 2 Watts. The units are simply connected to the drinking water supply.<br />

The existing supply pressure is used for operation.<br />

The production costs for pure, demineralized water depend on the<br />

total dissolved solids content of the water to be demineralized. Due to<br />

their high performance rate, destillo-Water Demineralizers also achieve<br />

production prices of less than 0,05 € per litre pure water, even at a total<br />

dissolved solids (TDS) level of 356 ppm as CaCO 3 (approx. 600 µS/cm).<br />

If the pure water requirement is a lot more than 150 litres a day, the production<br />

costs per litre can be reduced quite considerably again by using<br />

the hercopur-Reverse Osmosis System<br />

HERCO-destillo-Water Demineralizers produce water of the highest<br />

quality. The mixture ratio of the ion-exchanger resins (anion and cation exchangers)<br />

and the special water flow of HERCO-destillo-Units guarantee<br />

that very low conductivities are achieved over a longer period.<br />

If we take a limit conductivity of 20 µS/cm as a basis for determining the<br />

overall exchange capacity, the following demineralization rates are the<br />

low requirements of high quality pure water. This makes the destillo 2 the<br />

The destillo 2 can be simply mounted to the wall<br />

within reach of one´s working place. It prepares<br />

up to 50 litres demineralized water per hour and<br />

has a pure water capacity of 320 litres at a TDS<br />

of 178 ppm as CaCO 3.<br />

The pure water quality is continually monitored by<br />

a conductivity meter. When the maximum permissible<br />

conductivity (e.g. 20 µS/cm) is achieved the<br />

exhausted mixed-bed demineralizer cartridge is<br />

simply exchanged for a new cartridge with active<br />

ion-exchanger resin.<br />

What happens to the exhausted cartridge?<br />

No problem. Both the cartridge shell made of<br />

polyethylene and the resins are completely harmless<br />

and do not have to be disposed of in any<br />

special way.<br />

The pressureless HERCO-destillo-Units made of plastic are more or less<br />

classic among mixed-bed water demineralizers. They are extremely reasonable<br />

to purchase, easing the investment decision for an efficient unit<br />

for the preparation of pure water.<br />

Unlike the pressurized water demineralizers made of stainless steel, these<br />

units, with cartridges made of coloured polyethylene, are operated without<br />

any pressure. They can be connected to any drinking water tap if an<br />

unrestricted pure water outlet can be guaranteed.<br />

The pure water quality is continually monitored by a<br />

conductivity meter. This conductivity meter (Type 330 S)<br />

with analogue display has a measuring range from 0.2 to<br />

100 µS/cm and fits on all cartridge types belonging to the<br />

pressureless destillo-series. It is screwed directly onto the<br />

cartridge. The result is a unit with a compact design that<br />

is easy to install.<br />

Only quality mixed-bed resins with permanent regeneration<br />

qualities are used in the pressureless destillo 10<br />

unit. It is recommended to order a second cartridge as a<br />

spare when buying a HERCO-destillo-Unit. This is the<br />

only way to ensure continued pure water preparation<br />

while the exhausted cartridge is being regenerated.<br />

– and the water flow from top to bottom provide an ideal flow accross the<br />
