This rental was probably taken to assess the value of the estate following the death of the last of<br />

the Hampshire line of the S<strong>and</strong>ys family. On the death of Edwin S<strong>and</strong>ys in 1684, the estate<br />

passed to Sir John Mill, the son of S<strong>and</strong>ys' sister, Margaret (Hollings et al 1911, 450). <strong>An</strong><br />

undated sale particular of the estate of Sir John Mill is more informative (HRO 13M63/47).<br />

Internal references date the document to between 1697 <strong>and</strong> 1703. This sale did not take place,<br />

ut the document lists some field names missing from the 1684 rental. The relevant portions<br />

listing field names <strong>and</strong> other information about the estate are listed as follows:<br />

'Mr Gatehouse & Mr Goddard holds part of the demesne by lease for 14 years from Michaelmas<br />

1697 £220<br />

The close called the Great Close worth £5<br />

Mr Dowse holds part of ye Meadows called Eldon Mershes & 20 Cow Commons in Oakley<br />

Richard Mason holds the other part of Cadbury £10<br />
