magnetic disk stack. The recording surface area available with many disks in a stack
offered a huge advantage over a drum in terms of data storage capacity. Here was the
largest computer company in the world pursuing a magnetic disk storage device based on
the same mechanical non-contact magnetic recording approach used on magnetic drum
memory devices.
From my point of view, the magnetic drum initiated a paradigm shift in magnetic
recording, from analog contact recording to digital non-contact recording. The successful
development of a magnetic rotating disk drive would allow much higher capacity data
storage than a magnetic drum for computer use, ending consideration of magnetic drums
as memory devices. However, major technological advances in both mechanics and
magnetic recording storage density, yet to be even anticipated, would be necessary to
assure a long-term life for digital magnetic recording.
