WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Defense, exper ience key to ‘Hounds’ success
Craig Haupert
Entertuinnzent Editor
Coach Teri Moren’s women’s basketball
team wants to regain the title
of the best defensive team in the Great
Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) this
season.
“Our goal is holding our opponents
to 56 points or under,” Moren said.
“That is a lot when you consider that
we are part of a conference that is offensive
minded. This makes us a little
different, because we really try to get at
it defensively.”
Team members have been practicing
for about a month and have just started
their preseason games.
The ‘Hounds are coming off two
straight 20-win seasons, and last year
the ‘Hounds were ranked No. I in
the country in three-point field goal
percentage. Senior Erin Moran led all
divisions in three-point field goal percentage
last year, shooting more than
50 percent.
The ‘Hounds are returning four
seniors: guard Erin Moran, guard
Amanda Davidson, guard Sara Riedeman
and guard Amy Wisser. Coach
Moren is counting on their leadership
to carry the team deep into the NCAA
tournament at the end of the season.
“They have the experience, and they
have won a lot of games, so they will
MEN’S BASKETBALL
play a large part in how we do,” Moren
said.
The returning players will get some
help with tlhree new players this season:
two transfer students, Leisha Walker
(IPFW) and Mandy Geryak (Xavier),
and one freshman, Deanna Thomson
(Center Grove). “Thomson will bring a
lot inside. !She is a very athletic, mobile
post player,” Moren said.
Two new assistant coaches have
joined the team as well. Former U of I
player Saralh Shackle and Amy Cherubini,
former Indianapolis Pike High
School head coach and St. Louis and
Michigan assistant coach will be working
on making some changes to the
team’s defense.
“Defensively this year we want to
apply more pressure, extend the defensive,
throw some full court presses
at people, just mix it up a little bit,”
Cherubini said. “This is a little more of
an aggressive approach this year.. . we
want to get out in the passing lanes and
force more turnovers.”
The team is ranked second in preseason
standings, behind Bellarmine in
the GLVC and ranked 1 1 th nationally.
“We don’t pay as much attention to
the ~011s as, DeoDle think.” Moren said.
“Th;ee years ago, we were picked fifth
in the conference, and we ended up going
29 and three.”
Coach Todd Sturgeon’s men’s bas-
ketball team is heading into the 2004-
2005 seascin with two solid exhibition
wins under their belt. The ‘Hounds
easily defeated Niagara College of
Welland, Ontario and Mohawk College
of Hamilton, Ontario 104-52 and 85-55
respectively on Oct. 17 and 18.
Sturgeon said the two Canadien
teams were not as tough opponents
as the teams the ‘Hounds will face
in the Great Lakes Valley Confer-
ence and Region, but he was pleased
with the ‘Hounds defense and level of
intensity they played with. He noted
that one of the reasons the ‘Hounds
played so hard was due to the work
ethic of veteran players that spilled
over to the new players. Sturgeon will
look to his veteran players of seniors
Mickey McGill, David Logan, Cory
Bennett and Lawrence Barnes not only
to provide a consistent level of hard
work but to also lead the team until the
younger players get comfortable with
the ‘Hounds system.
“We have a lot of new guys so it
takes a while for them to get the hang
of the program. We are just trying to
get better everyday,” Logan said.
Logan returns as the ‘Hounds
leading scorer and could become the
conference’s all-time leading scorer
after the season if he averages around
25 points per game.
“I don’t think that will be very tough
for me,” Logan said. “I worked a lot on
my game in the off-season. I just have
to be a smarter player on the court to
get those extra and easy points.”
The ‘Hounds conference has tra-
ditionally been the best in Division I1
basketball, according to Sturgeon, and
U of I was selected to finish fifth in the
pre-season GLVC poll. However, Stur-
geon feels having the top place in the
GLVC is not a team goal, but making
sure the ‘Hounds finish in a spot that
sends them to the NCAA tournament is.
“As far as picking out a spot in the
conference, we haven’t talked about
that,” Sturgeon said. “What we have
talked about is being the first team in U
of I history to go to three consecutive
NCAA tournaments. That, I think, is
our primary goal.”
“Obviously we want to place higher
than we did last year in the National
Championships,” he said. “I think a
realistic goal would be at least top 15
this year with more than one All-Amer.
ican.”
Many freshman wrestlers are ex-
The women’s swimming team is
ready to splash right into the new
season with high hopes of winning
the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference, as well as earning
a top five finish at Nationals.
Sophomore and 2004 “Freshman of
the Year” Alison Smith thinks that the
team’s current speed shows potential.
“I think we’re swimming pretty fast for
this early in the season,” she said.
According to Coach Gary Kinkead,
those expected to play a key role in the
team’s success include veterans senior
Kristen Kendzierski, senior Kenzi
Miller, junior Kristen Lund, sophomore
Alison Smith and sophomore Holly
Spohr.
Kinkead also expects freshmen Ellie
Miller, Valerie Crosby, Amand Herd,
and Laura Folsom to step up this year.
Kendzierski agrees that the freshmen
will be an important asset to the
team. “I think a lot of the freshmen are
going to be a big part of it [the team’s
success] because we have a lot of them.
So it kind of adds to our depth,” she
said.
According to both Kendzierski and
Kinkead, the ‘Hounds’ main goals for
the season include winning the 2005
GLIAC Championship and making it to
Nationals in Orlando, Florida.
Both Kendzierski and Smith hope
to compete at Nationals in 2005. “My
personal goal is to make it back to
Nationals for my senior year,” Kendzierski
said.
“[I want] to make top eight at Na-
tionalr,” Smith said.
Kinkead has some personal goals as
well. He hopes that the members of his
team continue to be recognized for their
outstanding performance. “We’ve had a
real good run [over the past few years]
of ‘Swimmer of the Year’ and also the
‘Freshman of the Year,”’ he said. “So
hopefully we can continue that trend of
having those particular awards given to
one of our swimmers.”
The ‘Hounds currently have a win-
ning 7-4 record after defeating Ashland
113-36 in the season opener on Oct.
23. tinishing third of seven teams in
the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at
Purdue on Oct. 30 and placing third of
tive teams at the Truman State Bulldog
Invitational on Nov. 6.
The team’s season continues when
they compete with Wayne State at
home on Nov. 13.
