Table 3. Description and data measured for the colonies used in the experiments, grown under
the conditions described in the Methods section.
~1000fc, and V. aureus and V. obversus only at ~600fc since these strains either grew
deficiently or bleached and died at ~1000fc. V. obversus and V. rousseletii are male
strains. The V. rousseletii strain used for the experiments had a low proportion of
spontaneous sexual colonies (with sperm packets instead of gonidia). Table 3 shows
colony type, developmental mode, generation time, time to hatching from beginning of
the light cycle, mean reproductive and somatic cell numbers, and the NS/NR ratio data for
all the species/mutants used in this study.
Note: CT = colony type. D = developmental mode as described by Desnitski (1995). GT =
consistent generation time when synchronized in the conditions outlined; ~80% of lag - colonies
hatched in 2 days and ~20% in 3 days; when V. tertius colonies hatched 2 hours into the light
cycle, those colonies would hatch 2 days later 8 hours into the light cycle and vice versa. HT =
hatching time; number of light hours before hatching. n = sample size; NR = number of
reproductive cells; NS = number of somatic cells; N = total cell number; NS/NR ratio = somatic to
reproductive cell ratio.
