Overview:<br />

From the very beginning, the Confederacy found itself at a great disadvantage. It was at<br />

odds with the well-established army <strong>and</strong> navy <strong>of</strong> the North. As a result, the CSA was<br />

more than willing to experiment with new technology to give itself an advantage.<br />

Connection to the Curriculum:<br />

South Carolina History, United States History, Reading/Language <strong>Arts</strong><br />

South Carolina Social Studies Academic St<strong>and</strong>ards:<br />

8-3.5 Compare the military strategies <strong>of</strong> the North <strong>and</strong> South with regard to specific<br />

events <strong>and</strong> geographic locations in South Carolina, including the capture <strong>of</strong> Port<br />

Royal, the Union blockade <strong>of</strong> Charleston, <strong>and</strong> Sherman’s march through the state<br />

(H, P, G)<br />

Social Studies Literacy Elements:<br />

H. Construct maps, graphs, tables, <strong>and</strong> diagrams to display social studies<br />

information.<br />

Objectives:<br />

1. Students will label a map <strong>of</strong> the USA <strong>and</strong> CSA in 1861.<br />

2. Students will be able to describe the events surrounding the construction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

various submarine vessels.<br />

3. Students will read descriptions <strong>of</strong> each submarine <strong>and</strong> compare each submarine.<br />
