PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
This quarterly is late, late, late and no one knows this better than I.
However I know just why this is true but few if any of you can say that.
This, the Spring Quarterly, with the Ancestor Registry, is my favorite
a
issue. It is almost a glorified variation of "looking for a needle in
the hay stack" or a possible simple game of chance. Most times I find
. something that seems just for me. I usually study the corresponding
issues of our exchange quarterlies. Other people evidently do the same
because I am still receiving replies from the nineteen sheets I submitted
for our 1966 quarterly.
When your family sheets are received by our editor they are checked and
then each is transferred to 3 x 5 inch cards. These cards are then
alphabetized and then copied. Your sheets are then returned to you for
your files. These should be retained for corrections and additions.
They may then be resubmitted for another publication. Also the perma-
nent cards w i l l be corrected, You are welcome to use this permanent
file.
To prevent a major work load at any one time, please send in, your
sheets throughout the year. Be sure that you send yours in on or be-
fore January first. Each member may submit twenty records each year -
one sheet for each marriage in your lines.
Please check to see that you have everything typed or printed; that
all surnames are in capital letters; that y%u used the maiden names of
all women; that you have entered no initials; that all children are
listed in order of birth with your ancestor's name underlined; and
finally recheck each sheet for neatness and accuracy.
a,. Good wishes and happy ancestor searching.
Prince William County, Virginia
This county is one of the key counties in doing genealogical
or historical work in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Prince William
County was formed under a decree of the Assembly in 1731 and was taken
out of the jurisdiction prior to that date which was under Stafford
County, Virginia. The land area of Prince William County in 1731, when
it was "cut off" from Stafford Coo, included the lands upward between
the waters of the Potomac and the Rappahannock Rivers. By waters is
meant the tributary streams to these two large rivers. However, a lit-
tle confusion comes into the tracing of the land titles of the new
Prince William County, due to the fact that it is not well-known as a
fact that the narrow strip of land of Stafford and later Prince William
and Fauquier Co. had been a part of old Richmond County. Hence a few
of the land titles will not be found in Stafford or Westmoreland Co.
as would be expected, but will be found on Richmond and Essex Co. books.
That is, the old books found at Tappahannock, Essex Coo which really
are.the books of what we now call Old Rappahannock Co. Old Rappahannock
Co. was divided in 1692 into Richmond Co. and Essex Co. and the name
of Rappahannock for the county was dropped. The new Rappahannock Co.
lying westward of Fauquier and Culpeper, was not formed until about
1830.
But in the main, the history of Prince William Co. runs back to
Stafford and Westmoreland Counties for land owners and grants. Prince
William County is essential in searching Stafford County families.
Prince William County is essential in running back on the families of
Fairfax, Fauquier, and Loudoun Coo, Fairfax County was formed in 1742,
carrying with it Loudoun County area.
Fauquier County remained a part of Prince William until 1757
when it was formed, carrying the area out to the Shenandoah River in
1757. Families who removed to Fairfax, Loudoun,. or Fauquier directly
from other counties, such as Westmoreland, Richmond, etc., often never
actually resided in Prince William, but they were under the jurisdic-
tion of that court until the new courts of their new residences were
established. Thus we often find important data on the books in Prince
William County which show the migrations.
The parishes of Prince William County were Dettengen and Hamilton.
Dettengen Parish is wholly contained within the present limits of
Prince William County, but Hamilton Parish was not contiguous with
Prince William County as it extended over into Fauquier County.
You will find mention of the Manor of Leeds in early Prince
William County and later in Fauquier County. This was the only manor
formed in this section and it extended to the Shenandoah River and
bordered on Frederick County. This is often confused with Leeds
Parish which parish was later named from the manor. Fairfax Harrison's
book, Landmarks of Prince William County, is very valuable and is
authentic, The Northern Neck Grant Books in the Archives of the
Virginia State Library, the taxes, rent rolls, etc. provide additional
source material,
A wrong impression has been published on the material for re-
search work in the Court House at Manassas, Prince William County,
Va. This has been due to the fact that a will book and a few of the
deed books are missing, having been taken away by the Federal Army dur-
ing their occupation of Manassas, but there is a large amount of mate-
rial in the record room of the Court House. This material enables one
to bridge over this loss of records and if one gets the data from the
source material in the Archives Division, of the Va. State Library,
they can usually work out any genealogical problem on families who ever
appear on the Prince William County books.
Material at Manassas, Virginia.
Will Books - one or two are missing.
Deed Books - two or three are missing.
Court Order Books - these begin in 1733 and are nearly continuous
on down the years.
The Court Order Books are the day books of the county clerk in
which he notes down every document brought in to his office to be
recorded, as well as the minutes of the court, and they are very essen-
tial in doing research work. They bridge over the gaps of the missing
books.
Rule Books and Minute Books are like the Court Order Books.
There is an old Bond Book.
The original index to all records of Prince William Co., Va.
This index from A to M was evidently in a separate book and has
been lost, but the alphabet from M to Z is still extant.
One of the most valuable sources for research for the whole
Northern Neck of Virginia is found in the Courthouse at Manassas.
This consists of several "Land Cause Books." These books were from
the old District Court held at Haymarket. In these books are lawsuits
and controversies over boundaries and ownership and heirship. In
these old cases exhibits were brought in to prove the contentions made
in the suits. These exhibits are: old wills, deeds, grants, affi-
davits, depositions, and all sorts of material placed before the Court.
These books are partly indexed but one should scan them to get com-
plete information. The information given often runs back to the origi-
nal patentee and covers many counties.
In doing research in Prince William or in any other county in
Virginia, it is not safe to rely solely on any index, particularly in
deeds, as in the recitation of the legal title to the land, one often
finds much family data on persons named as the grantor or the grantee.
Many of the abstracts we are quoting were found by scanning any
and all of the books of Prince William County for information on particular
names or data in qeneral - for our files.
This could be most important to anyone working in the Northern
Neck of Virginia. This came in a personal letter from a Virginian who
was selling me on the idea of doing research in person and on-the
ground. The Ed.
''1 have had several experiences of finding interesting things in
old trunks; in fact, that is the way I got started on ancestor
hunting. The latest came to me a few days ago from an old trunk
that was purchased for restoration. Inside was found a panel
14" x 26" done in black and gold. The paper on which the panel
is printed is now brittle with age and has some torn places on
the edges, but it could be restored and laminated for preserva-
angels supporting a wreath of golden roses around a cross, and
at the base of the cross the following memorial:
