Just outside the appellation of Fronsac, this tiny microscopic property planted with 85%
Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon has produced another sleeper
of the vintage. Deep, chocolatey, black currant fruit intermixed with spice, vanilla, and
smoke is seductive and delicious. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
This 100% Merlot, a sleeper of the vintage from a 7.5-acre vineyard in a humble
appellation, exhibits remarkable purity, richness, depth, and chewiness. It is an impressive
example of what can be bought for a song from this amazing vintage.
This tiny generic Bordeaux, owned by the children of Pierre Ferrand (of St.-Emilion's
Ferrand-Lartigue garage winery), is made primarily from Merlot. The big, sweet nose of
cola, berry fruit, and smoke is followed by a soft, lush wine meant to be consumed
during its first 3-4 years of life. This wine should be sold for a song.

An amazing effort from a humble Bordeaux appellation, this sleeper of the vintage
reveals a heady concoction of dense black currants, melted licorice, smoke, and barbecue
spices. Dense, opulent, fruity, and rich, it should be consumed over the next 4-5 years.
This amazing effort, a 5,000 bottle cuvee made by the children of Ferrand-Lartigue's
proprietor, boasts gorgeous opulence, lavish quantities of blackberry and cherry fruit, a
touch of sweet toasty oak, and a fleshy, 30-second finish. It is a revelation for a generic
Bordeaux, admirably demonstrating what can be done by conscientious producers from
humble appellations. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.

I liked this 2002 more before bottling, because the fruit has become more subdued, the
tannins elevated, and the relatively aggressive use of new oak seems to dominate the
wine’s personality. The result is a medium-bodied wine with an attenuated, short finish.
Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
This seriously run property, located on a plateau not far from Fronsac, is planted with
83% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It is run by Vincent and
Beatrice Rapin, whose father owns Ferrand-Lartigue. A sleeper of the vintage, the 2003
Valmengaux is a modern-styled, richly fruity claret with plenty of new oak
characteristics, a beautiful texture, good weight to its blackberry and cassis fruit, and fine
purity as well as depth. It should drink well for 5-6 years.
This well-run estate has turned out a deeply fruity, modern-style Bordeaux Superieur
with a dark ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of black fruits, new oak, and licorice.
Ripe, opulent, round, and generously endowed, with low acidity but plenty of body and
length, it should be consumed over the next 5-7 years.
An outstanding effort for a generic Bordeaux, the 2003 Valmengaux reveals notes of
spice oak intertwined with black currants, melted licorice, and espresso roast. A sleeper
of the vintage, it possesses fine intensity, good purity, and a spicy, long, medium-bodied
finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

Valmengaux’s straightforward, dark ruby-hued 2004 is more austere than usual, but
possesses fresh, lively black cherry and black raspberry fruit, good acidity, and a hint of
toasty new oak. Consume it during its first 5-7 years of life.

A consistent winner in nearly every vintage, this dense ruby/purple-tinged 2005
Valmengaux reveals notions of toasty oak, roasted coffee, creme de cassis, spring
This up-and-coming generic Bordeaux is a serious effort produced by the daughter of
St.-Emilion’s Ferrand-Lartigue’s owner. The blend of 83% Merlot, 12% Cabernet
Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc easily absorbs the abundant new oak characteristics
in this deep ruby/purple-tinged offering. Spicy vanillin intermingled with black cherry
jam and blackberry notes are accompanied by crisp acidity, surprising definition and
nuances for such a young wine, impressive density, and a blockbuster finish. This
impressive Bordeaux Superieur should last for 5-7 years.
