Captain Ric’s Fish Tales

I have to start this report out with a statement.
I don’t think you will hear me complaining
about the cold weather anymore
when I fish after the trip that I just took. After
goose hunting in temperatures that were
minus 3 windchill, the thought of a day on
the water with temperatures in the 40s seems
downright balmy.
One of my clients, Tiger Hoffman, and
myself spent three days just south of Lake
Erie in what we called blizzard conditions
without adequate clothing or footwear. It’s
hard to complain with our conditions here at
home after that trip.
I have said it before and I will say it again
that folks from the north are tuff people. I
hope you forgive me for putting my picture
in the paper this month, but I was very
proud of my first goose. Now, let’s get to
the fishing forecast.
Fishing has been pretty good; mainly because
our weather has been a little warmer
on average than what we normally have this
time of year. After the last two winters, we
deserve it. Trout season is open again and
will stay open year-round under the new
regulations. We have been doing very well
on shrimp, but have occasionally gone to soft
plastics while fishing for them. This is one of
the best times of the year to use soft plastics. I
would certainly recommend them if you are
the type angler that has to stay busy doing
something. If you are a little more relaxed in
your fishing style, a shrimp under a float will
be perfect. I fall somewhere in between the
two fishing styles.
Another good bite has been the sheepshead--not
the same fish that is found up
north. Our sheepshead are tasty with a white
meat that is firm in texture. They can be a bit
challenging to catch at times, but for the most
part, a sure dinner when you find them. One
thing to keep in mind is to use some caution
while cleaning them. They seem to always
find a way to poke a fin in the tender places
of the hands. If you like fried fish, sheepshead
and fresh trout are hard to beat.
We have also been having some pretty
good fishing while after the bonnethead
sharks. They are not the sharks that create
nightmares, but they are very fun to catch
on light tackle and are always a big hit
with the junior anglers. I love it when a client
brings kids aboard and we get into the
sharks. You can always get a chuckle out
of how the size of the shark grows as the
day gets longer. It’s hilarious to hear a kid
talk about the 6-foot shark he caught at the
dock when a few hours earlier, that shark
was actually only three and a half feet long.
Gotta love a fisherman.
We are also catching redfish and snook
right now if that is of interest to you, but
not like we do in the warmer months. I hope
this has tweaked your interest and you get
