Each spring, the Florida Strawberry Festival® rolls out
the red carpet to welcome visitors from throughout the
Sunshine State and around the world. Guests come from
near and far to enjoy exhibits of agriculture, commerce,
industry, livestock, fine arts, horticulture, and crafts.
The fabric of American life is woven into the Festival
through social events, contests, youth developmental
programs, top-name entertainment, and parades with
glorious floats and high-stepping marching bands.

Rowdies Unveil 2012 Schedule
The Tampa Bay Rowdies and the North American Soccer League (NASL) recently announced
the 2012 schedule. Between April 7th and September 22nd, Tampa Bay will
play each NASL team four times, twice at home at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg
and twice on the road. The top six teams advance to the NASL playoffs, with the top two
receiving first-round byes.
The Rowdies open the 2012 season on the road at Puerto Rico on Saturday, April 7,
before hosting FC Edmonton in the home opener on Saturday, April 14, at 7:30pm at Al
Lang. Tampa Bay plays five of its first nine matches at home, where the team lost just
once in the regular season after June 4 a year ago.
The Rowdies will start their preseason training camp on March 1, 2012, and will announce

Hope Children’s Home
Rescuing the Next Generation
Over the past few years, the demographics
of Hope Children’s Home have changed
somewhat; the ages of the children are getting
lower and we have more and more
families in our care. Because of those two
changes, our Executive Director, Dr. Mike
Higgins, felt the Lord leading us to add a
new dimension to our ministry – Cottages.
At this time, all children in our care live
in dormitories – girls and boys. Adding
cottages will allow our staff to give the
needed attention to the younger children
while allowing us to put families under the
same roof.
Both cottages are well underway with
the first cottage nearing completion. As
we move into February, we are hopeful
to complete insulation and begin drywall
work on cottage one. Our need at that point
will be inside painting, trim work, and materials
and labor for tile floor installation.
On cottage two, we have completed most
of the framing work and are currently beginning
installation of the outside siding.
We will have immediate needs for outside
trim work and painting.

International Recording Artist Paul Wilbur has an energetic message through his music

Could God Still Love You?

Do you ever wonder if God could still

The truth is that God chose to create you
in your mother’s womb. He waits faithfully
and patiently for you to choose Him
back. His eye has never left you. He’s seen
and heard everything. And He still chooses
you! Why? Because God’s love for you
does not depend on anything you do; it
depends only on who you are…His precious
creation. The devil’s lie is that your
deeds are too bad for God. God’s truth is
that He does love you. Just ask Him. It’s
not too late.

I grew up reading Charlie Brown in the
Sunday comics. Valentine’s Day was not
Charlie Brown’s favorite holiday. Each
year, he would eagerly look in his mailbox,
but he never received a valentine card. One
year he did, but Lucy convinced him it was
a mistake.
Each year, we give family, friends and
loved ones little treats and special valentine
cards. We also remember those who
are kind or have done something special.
Then, there are those people we purposely
chose not to remember, and there
are those who don’t even come to mind.
In each of our lives, there are “Charlie
Browns” who will not receive any token of
love or attention.
Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment
was. He answered, “You must
love the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your soul, and all your mind. This is the
first and greatest commandment.” But he
didn’t stop there. He continued, “A second
is equally important: Love your neighbor
as yourself.”
Did you catch the “equally important”
part? It is important that our love for God
flows over into our love for others. Notice
that he said we are to love others “as” ourselves,
not “for” ourselves. When we love
those who love us, are kind to us, or have
done something special for us, we love
them “for” ourselves.
One More Valentine

Jesus said to the Pharisees, “If you only
love those who love you, why should you
get credit for that?”
It was a rhetorical question. He knew the
answer was “You don’t.” He continued,
“Love your enemies! Do good to them.
Lend to them without expecting to be repaid.
Then your reward from heaven will
be very great, and you will truly be acting
as children of the Most High.”
This year, perhaps you can find it in your
heart to buy one more valentine. Ask God
to bring someone to your mind who probably
will not receive one or who might need
to receive one from you. Who knows, your
card might just be the one they’ve been
looking for.
After all, we once received a valentine
from God. It was in the shape of a cross. On
it, He declared His love for you and me.
He did this even though we weren’t
thinking of Him. Maybe it’s time to love
someone else the way we were loved. Unconditionally.

Captain Ric’s Fish Tales

I have to start this report out with a statement.
I don’t think you will hear me complaining
about the cold weather anymore
when I fish after the trip that I just took. After
goose hunting in temperatures that were
minus 3 windchill, the thought of a day on
the water with temperatures in the 40s seems
downright balmy.
One of my clients, Tiger Hoffman, and
myself spent three days just south of Lake
Erie in what we called blizzard conditions
without adequate clothing or footwear. It’s
hard to complain with our conditions here at
home after that trip.
I have said it before and I will say it again
that folks from the north are tuff people. I
hope you forgive me for putting my picture
in the paper this month, but I was very
proud of my first goose. Now, let’s get to
the fishing forecast.
Fishing has been pretty good; mainly because
our weather has been a little warmer
on average than what we normally have this
time of year. After the last two winters, we
deserve it. Trout season is open again and
will stay open year-round under the new
regulations. We have been doing very well
on shrimp, but have occasionally gone to soft
plastics while fishing for them. This is one of
the best times of the year to use soft plastics. I
would certainly recommend them if you are
the type angler that has to stay busy doing
something. If you are a little more relaxed in
your fishing style, a shrimp under a float will
be perfect. I fall somewhere in between the
two fishing styles.
Another good bite has been the sheepshead--not
the same fish that is found up
north. Our sheepshead are tasty with a white
meat that is firm in texture. They can be a bit
challenging to catch at times, but for the most
part, a sure dinner when you find them. One
thing to keep in mind is to use some caution
while cleaning them. They seem to always
find a way to poke a fin in the tender places
of the hands. If you like fried fish, sheepshead
and fresh trout are hard to beat.
We have also been having some pretty
good fishing while after the bonnethead
sharks. They are not the sharks that create
nightmares, but they are very fun to catch
on light tackle and are always a big hit
with the junior anglers. I love it when a client
brings kids aboard and we get into the
sharks. You can always get a chuckle out
of how the size of the shark grows as the
day gets longer. It’s hilarious to hear a kid
talk about the 6-foot shark he caught at the
dock when a few hours earlier, that shark
was actually only three and a half feet long.
Gotta love a fisherman.
We are also catching redfish and snook
right now if that is of interest to you, but
not like we do in the warmer months. I hope
this has tweaked your interest and you get
out there and enjoy the great resource we
have right here in our backyard. Until next

The history of golf is very interesting,
especially how the game has evolved over
the years. Imagine yourself walking to the
tee for a round of golf—just before 1880
and the turn of the century.
As we walk to the tee, there is a sandbox
and water sitting on the tee. This is
not to fill our divots, but to form a tee out
of wet sand. Eventually, molds were designed
to shape the wet sand into a more
uniform shape and height until the tee
was invented
Rubber tees will soon be used, followed
by wire tees created by a dentist from
New Jersey, named Dr. William Lowell,
in 1890. Dr. Lowell’s tees will then evolve
into tees made of wire and wood, but
those tees will be easily lost and inhibit
mowing, so Dr. Lowell will then develop
the wooden tee in the shape that will still
be standard today.
In 1898, there will be a golf ball introduced
by Coburn Haskell, with a rubber
core wound with rubber thread. Before
that, the gutta-percha ball made from the
sap of trees found in India was the ball
of choice. In 1902, Balata covers will first
be used.

February is American Heart Month and,
yes, I know talking about death is not a
‘romantic’ topic to think about – especially
in February. However, now that heart disease
is the number one killer of women in
America, it’s something that’s important to
be looked into.
When you think about showing love and
affection to the ones you love, I encourage
you to also think about taking care of your
heart and your health so a healthy you will
be there for your loved ones!
An American dies every 33 seconds from
a coronary event, which is why (if you don’t
want it to happen to you) it’s important to
start doing something about preventing
it – NOW! It’s also no longer exclusive to
elders since heart disease is the third leading
cause of death among women, aged 25-
44 years, and the second leading cause of
death among women, aged 45-64 years.
Heart disease now kills more women
than men; it’s the number one killer in
this country and most health experts believe
about 80% is preventable by lifestyle
changes. Our goal is to help prevent heart
attacks or getting heart disease.
Unfortunately, about 40% of women
who have a heart attack die within one
year of having that heart attack, compared
to 25% of men dying within one year. One
of the main challenges is about 60% of people
who die of heart disease had no prior
symptoms. That is why it is so important
to be proactive in preventing heart disease,
also getting checked by your doctor for
precursors to heart disease. These are some
of the top ways to prevent heart disease:
1) Be a healthy weight. Obese people are

more likely to die of heart disease. Lose
weight - even if you are only 20 to 30 lbs.
overweight - because that can affect your
heart; the most dangerous weight is around

3) Reduce your total cholesterol level.
However, more important than just reducing

medication.
4) Manage your blood sugar levels – especially
if you have diabetes - with diet and
exercise.
5) Keep your blood pressure in check.
Again, I prefer keeping the blood pressure

6) Get active! It is a proven fact that a sedentary
lifestyle increases your risk factors.
I have been studying health and fitness
for over 19 years and I believe that it is imperative
to ask your doctor to run the tests
listed below. Although some of these tests
are controversial that these factors cause
heart disease, it is reported that many people
who get heart disease prove an imbalance
of these in their body:
1) C-reactive Protein (CRP) may be a
marker of the inflammation of arteries if
this is elevated and has been linked to atherosclerosis
(the blockage of the arteries).
The normal level of CRP in your blood
should be up to 4.9mg/L.
2) Elevated Homocysteine has been
linked to heart disease, normal is between
4.4 and 10.8 micromoles per liter (µmol/L).
This is usually caused by a deficiency in B
vitamins and folic acid.
3) Blood Cholesterol Ratios, not just total
cholesterol. You want a ratio of 3-to-1 or
less, meaning you want three times more
HDL then you do LDL. Also, you want to
get the TYPE of LDL you have tested before
you ever go on statin drugs. Research now
shows that if you have a high amount of a
certain type of LDL, you should not go on
those drugs.
Extensive research shows that eating
healthier and exercising are two of the best
ways to prevent heart disease, so get your
body moving and watch what you put in
your mouth!

Life on the Weeki Wachee River

The Weeki Wachee River is one of the best places to
kayak in the world today.
My wife Sara and I have been blessed and
live in a stilt home overlooking the pristine
Weeki Wachee River in Florida. The headspring
of the river is where the Weeki Wachee
Mermaid Park is located about an hour
north of Tampa. You can actually see mermaids
perform shows in a huge glass tank,
right where millions of gallons of crystal
clear fresh water gushes out of the ground.
The spring is fed from the aquifer and is a
constant 72 degrees year-round.
The river gets its name from how it winds out
to the Gulf of Mexico. I’m told that “Weeki Wachee”
is Indian talk that translates into “Winding
River.” Our homestead is midway between
the headspring of the mermaid park and the
mouth of the river where it spills into the Gulf.
I find it mystical to see millions of gallons of
fresh water flow past our dock and then out
to the Gulf of Mexico. The river goes up and
down and is affected by the tides. If you’re a
crow, we are upriver about a mile and a half
from where the river greets the Gulf.
The pristine river boils with wildlife. Many
creatures are year-round residents and make
the river their permanent home and then
there are the tourist animals that migrate to
the fresh water on a seasonal basis. Kayaking,
swimming, tubing and idle speed boating
are the modes of transportation for humans.
We have the best of both worlds with
the fresh spring river water in our backyard
and then the saltwater of the Gulf of Mexico
a short cruise downriver. Each environment
attracts many species of fish, birds, mammals,
insects and other creatures. Many of
the animals enjoy the saltwater environment
of the Gulf and mix it up with the fresh water
of the river. We see many saltwater fish in
the river that have acclimated themselves to
the fresh water. I’m amazed at all the different
species of birds that call the Weeki Wachee
home. Hundreds of vultures roost in
the tall trees at night and refresh themselves
in the clear river water. Vultures are the sign
of death. Where there is death there is life.
The wildlife I see is abundant and healthy.
I think the most intriguing attraction of the
Weeki Wachee River is the many manatees
that make the river their paradise home. During
the winter, we do get an influx of tourist
mammoth sea cows that are attracted to the
warm river water. The Gulf of Mexico waters
drop below 70 degrees during the winter
months and the manatees are attracted to the

Wachee River.

of the resident manatees and recognize them
from the boat scars they have endured from
propellers of motorboats. Manatees are vegetarians
and like to graze on the eelgrass that
is plentiful in the river. We see many baby
manatees, juveniles and giant elders. It’s
against the law to harass or impede the progress
of a manatee. Usually, when you see
one manatee, there are more close by. They
do pack up and travel together. I’ve seen as
many as eight manatees together downriver
relaxing in the deepwater ledges of Fish
Hospital Hole, which is 150 feet deep. I like
to watch them surface every few minutes to
get air. There is something special to see a
manatee in a pristine, natural environment.
They all look very healthy sans some scars
from boat propellers. The river is a no-wake
zone and all motorboats have to cruise at
idle speed. The baby manatees usually swim
along side or underneath their mother and
are protected from the propellers that can do
so much damage quickly.

The holiday is celebrated on the third
Monday of February. George Washington,
known as “The Father of Our Country,”
was the first President of the United States
of America.
He played a major role in the drafting of
