ADVISORY NOTE :
As mentioned in the Introduction, the reader is cautioned that while an enormous amount
ofresearch was the foundation of this paper, compiled over a three-year period in the early
1980s, the terms "possibly" and "probably" were exercised intentionally wherever they appear
herein .
Although the reader may concur completely with relationships theorized in this
presentation, it is an irresponsible disservice to other researchers, as well as to the author of
this paper, to state asfact any portion of this compilation which is specifically offered a
possibility or as a probability by the author .
Many family connections were established in the process of accumulating and correlating
the material contained in "Controversy in the Carolinas ." However, the primary goal ofthe
author was to enlighten other Lovelace/Loveless researchers as to potential relationships and to
offer them avenues to investigate as a process of either proving or disproving them with
incontrovertible documentation .
Because countless researchers have ignored the mandate to include her usage of "possible"
and "probable" when citing this work as a source, the author is compelled to issue a disclaimer
to any lineage said to be proven herein in those instances where it is presented merely as a
theory .
Although many other individuals are continuing to probe the origins of the Lovelace /
Loveless families of the Southern States, the author of this paper has elected to reprint
"Controversy" as it was written originally . It is the responsibility of those who have uncovered
relevant material through sheer diligence, as well as through easier accessibility to old records
than was possible nearly twenty years ago, to publish their findings for the benefit ofpresent
and future genealogists . Those who continue to pursue the resolutions to seemingly
unanswerable mysteries are to be commended for their dedication to the cause .
INTRODUCTION
LOVELACE -LOVELESS : CONTROVERSY IN THE CAROLINAS
Jayne Pratt Lovelace
May 1982
The spelling of the Lovelace name in colonial records prior to the American Revolution
depended upon phonetic interpretation by court clerks rather than upon any preference ofthose
bearing the name . During the height ofthe Revolution a pattern of consistency abruptly surfaced in
some areas, including the Carolinas, implying that political attitudes influenced some branches to
adhere to the original Lovelace while others adopted the Loveless version . About the middle 1800's
many descendants of the Loveless families reverted to Lovelace while others assumed variations :
Lovelass, Lovelis, etc . One purpose of this paper is to present evidence that the Loveless families of
South Carolina were of a Lovelace origin . This is substantiated by a Bible record, quoted herein,
which records the children's surname in two ways .
The second purpose is to meticulously scrutinize records pertaining to some Lovelace lines in
North Carolina whose descendants need to be aware that their ancestry can no longer be accepted
until proof is acquired . Although traditional lineages have not been utterly disproved, recently
discovered discrepancies relegate those lineages to the category oftheory rather than fact .
In the past it was assumed by many that the Lovelace heads of household in the earliest North
Carolina records [with the exception of John of Wilkes County] were the sons of John Baptist
Lovelace ofMaryland whose children included sons Archibald and William . It has also been
accepted that the son Archibald was the same who resided in Iredell and Wilkes Counties from before
1790 until his death in 1845, and that the son William was the same born 29 July 1747 who married
Margery Beall . Real evidence exists that the first part of this tradition is untrue, and consequently the
second part also .
Although Archibald Lovelace ofWilkes County was survived by no legitimate children, it was a
through examination of his records which initiated speculation that tradition may be erroneous
regarding the father of Archibald and his brother William born 1747 . A comprehensive analysis of
that situation is now necessary .
I1

PART I - ONE FAMILY RECORD OF WILLIAM LOVELACE BORN 1747
In 1931 Samuel McClendon of Georgia and Louisiana contributed his Lovelace pedigree, including
exact birth dates and places, to Florence Keeny Robertson's "Lovelace/Loveless and Allied Families"
{Ref. 1] . Although that book is flawed in portions where the author ventured to speculate or where
tradition rather than documents were the basis of family outlines, Mr . McClendon's presentation
appears to be thoroughly researched .
His second cousin, Mrs . William Sapp Sr. ofDalton, Georgia, submitted an identical lineage for
her grandfather, Allen Lovelace born 1783, to a column in Hearst's "Sun American," published 16
November 1930 . This article is available at the Georgia Archives .
Family records maintained by Mrs . Sapp's grandfather in his Bible were published in "Tap
Roots," Vol . II No . 3, January 1974, by The Genealogical Society ofEast Alabama. Other Bible
records of this family were published in Vol . 10 No . 4 and Vol . 11 No . l ; but none identifies the
father ofWilliam Lovelace born 1747 .
It is believed that Mr. McClendon's sources included records or data provided by his grandmother,
Amanda Brooks Robinson, who resided near him in Louisiana. Her grandparents were William and
Margery (Beall) Lovelace .
According to McClendon, his grandmother's grandfather was a Junior, a son of William Lovelace
Sr . born 2 July 1720, Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland . McClendon stated that William, Sr .
was in the 1776-78 census there; however, the published copy of that census does not specify ages .
McClendon also named the wife of William Sr . born 1720 as Margaret Beall born 1727, which is
possible . However, she was not the daughter of James and Margaret (Edmonston) Beall whose
daughter Margery born 25 Sept 1739/41 married William Lovelace "Jr ." Numerous documents at
the Georgia Archives pertain to the Maryland estate settlement of Margaret (Edmonston) Beall,
specifying the participation of William Lovelace (Jr .) In behalf of his children . His wife Margery was
then [1809] deceased . Whether William Sr. also had a wife Margaret/Margery Beall is questionable,
but the several Beall families in Maryland have not been adequately researched .
Proponents ofthe theory that William born 1747 who married Margery Beall was a son of
John Baptist Lovelace have argued that it was the dual birth dates of 1727 and 1739 for
Margery/Margaret Beall [as cited in various genealogies] upon which a 1720 birth date for William
Lovelace Sr . was "estimated."
1 .

2 .
They have declared that William Lovelace Sr . was therefore non-existent . However, Mr. McClendon
did not give an approximate birth date of 1720 ; he stated it exactly as 2 April 1720 . It is unlikely that
he would have invented such a precise date .
Samuel McClendon also related that his great-great-grandfather, William Lovelace Jr . had brothers
Aaron and Archibald and probably others and that "Archibald died childless and lived in
Iredell County, North Carolina."
It is illogical that an individual would know the names and particulars of his ancestor's brothers
but not know that ancestor's identity .
Aaron Lovelace is probably the same who bought land 2 Dec 1793 on Rocky Creek, Edgefield
County, South Carolina, from John and Sarah Couch . Archibald Lovelace, named by McClendon as
a son of William Sr . born 1720, appears to be the same who married Jean Irwin of Iredell County,
North Carolina. A marriage bond was posted in his behalf by Evan Beall on 7 Oct 1786 [Iredell
Book 4 p.77] .
Of great significance is the fact that the marriage bond signature of Archibald Lovelace of
Iredell/Wilkes Counties bears no resemblance to the signature of Archibald Lovelace on a 1787
Rowan County land grant . Photocopies of both documents follow this page .
In addition to the distinctly different signatures, there is further evidence that two Archibald
Lovelaces resided in Rowan/Iredell/Wilkes Counties . Parish records of Prince George County,
Maryland, prove that Archibald Lovelace, son of John Baptist and Eleanor, was born 26 July 1761,
Rock Creek . The 1810 Wilkes County, North Carolina census indicates that the Archibald Lovelace
who married Jean Irwin and resided there was still under forty-five in 1810, probably born c 1766 .
Archibald of Wilkes County wrote his will 29 August 1845, naming his wife Jane/Jean, and
bequeathing goods and property to several individuals with a specific relationship cited in only one
instance : " . . .my nephews Zadoc, William, and Reason Beall ."
Court records reveal that these were the sons ofEvan Beall, the bondsman for Archibald
Lovelace's marriage . Evan Beall's will dated 17 Nov 1794, Wilkes County, names his wife
AMELIA as executrix ; Zadoc Beall, executor. It has been accepted so commonly that Archibald of
Wilkes County was John Baptist Lovelace's son that some researchers have concluded that
Archibald's sister, Amelia (Lovelace) Beall, was John Baptist's daughter Millisent . One remarkable
explanation tendered is that "Millisent" was an unusual name in North Carolina and

that no one could spell it -- even though John Baptist Lovelace, his widow Eleanor, and Eleanor's
second husband all referred to Millisent in their wills, the latter two in North Carolina .
Archibald Lovelace's 1845 will directs that certain slaves be sold to James Lovelace of Troup
County, Georgia, known to be the son of William and Margery (Beall) Lovelace . The will does not
specify "my nephew James" as is occasionally reported, but that relationship does appear likely .
Also remembered with small bequests were "William Lovelace, brother of Amos ;" and Sarah
Lovelace, "Wife of Levi ." Amos, William, and Levi were grandsons of Charles Lovelace,
presumably John Baptist's son ofthat name, who lived near Archibald in Iredell County . Except for
these great-grandchildren ofJohn Baptist, none of his other numerous descendants is mentioned,
indicating a gesture of friendship rather than of close kinship .
William Lovelace born 1747 enlisted in Charles County, Maryland, 10 June 1778 for nine
months, a private in Capt . Nathaniel Ewing's Company, First Maryland Regiment . Payroll records
reveal that in February 1779 he was on furlough . It may be theorized that during this month he
escorted his wife Margery and daughters [Mary b.1774 and Elizabeth b.1776, Charles County] to
Iredell County, North Carolina .
On 20 April 1779 William received a clothing allowance in Maryland, having re-enlisted . This
followed by eight days the birth of his son James "in Iredell County," according to a Bible entry,
although Iredell was not to be formed until nine years later .
Payroll records of September 1778 prove that William was then with his company at Fish Kill,
New York. Although not impossible, it is unlikely that he would be the same William Lovelace on
the 1778 Rowan County, North Carolina, tax list who had not yet sworn an Oath of Allegiance . In
1783 William and Margery settled in Richmond/Columbia/Troupe County, Georgia, where she died
in September 1803, age sixty-four, according to son Allen's Bible which gives her birth date
elsewhere as 25 September 1741 .
Columbia County, Georgia, 10 August 1808 : "James Beall, late of Montgomery County,
Maryland, deceased, gave to his wife all real and personal estate, at her death to be divided between
Margery Lovelace, wife of William ; her three brothers and sisters and their heirs. Margaret and
Margery having since departed, James and Allen Lovelace, John Collins (husband ofMary
Lovelace), James Stapler (husband ofElizabeth Lovelace), Isham Fuller (husband ofPeggy
Lovelace), and William Stapler (husband ofPatsey Lovelace) have appointed William Lovelace to
The family Bible [see page 2 of this presentation for a published source] states that William
Lovelace died in Columbia County, Georgia, in August 1815, "age sixty-eight ." Elsewhere in the
Bible his birthdate is given as 29 July 1750 . The children listed therein for William and Margery
(Beall) are as follows with additional data for them in other Bibles cited :
fortunate . Hopefully, some among them will acknowledge that material presented herein merits
serious consideration and will undertake the task of proving beyond any doubt the parents of William
Lovelace born 29 July 1747/50, Charles County, Maryland .

a .

Mr . McClendon's article in Ref. l states that there were probably other brothers of William "Jr ."
besides Aaron and Archibald "in the Carolinas ." One of them was most likely John Lovelace who
married Priscilla Lehre [daughter of Thomas Lehre whose will dated 1793, Edgefield County, South
Carolina, names his daughter Priscilla, wife of John Lovelace, and their son John] . By deed of gift 7
January 1795, Edgefield County, John gave his plantation and branded cattle to Benjamin Loveless
Sr . born circa 1745, probably another brother .
Benjamin Sr .'s wife signed deeds with him as Constance . Mr . W . Hobson Roughton ofUnion
Springs, Alabama, discovered a reference which seems to identify her as Constance (Kirkland),
daughter of Snowden of Edgefield County . The "Kirkland Source Book ofRecords" [Ref.2] contains
a deposition by Snowden Kirkland's grandson, Levi born 1776, in which he mentions his paternal
aunt, Coney/Connie Loveless . A brief outline of Benjamin and Constance's children appears on the
following page .
Perhaps another brother was Joshua/Joshuay Loveless who witnessed a deed between Benjamin
and Constance Loveless and Moses Holston, I May 1793, Edgefield County . Ofthose four in that
district only Benjamin Loveless Sr . i s found in post-1800 records . Neither Aaron, Joshua, nor John is
included in any local census ; and no estate records are indexed for them .
Records at Columbia County, Georgia [where William "Jr ." born 1747 settled in 1783] show that
on 12 Sept 1814 [recorded 10 Sept 1829] one John Lovelace sold for one hundred dollars a five-acre
lot, including mineral springs, to General Twiggs . William born 1747 and Margery had no son John .
This Georgia record could apply to John ofEdgefield county .
[Wurt's "Magna Charta Lineages" Vol . VII contains a Lovelace pedigree relating to the Edgefield
County family but includes several errors. (1) John Baptist Lovelace who allegedly deeded land to
Trinity Church in New York in 1715 obviously is not the same born 1712 (birth date in Maryland
Records Vol . 1) who died 1765, Maryland . (2) William Lovelace born 1720 does appear to have been
the father of John of Edgefield County, but this John married Priscilla Lehre . (3) John Loveless who
married Priscilla Hartley was born circa 1774, son ofBenjamin Sr .]
One Lovelace genealogy [Ref.3] mentions the children ofBenjamin Sr . but contains erroneous
data on some and omits others, based upon census figures . In 1790 Edgefield District : 1-4-5 . In
1800 there : 30101-12001 . In 1810 : 01101-00001 . He is not in the 1820 index . There are many
deeds on file for him, and in 1802 he was administrator of his son Benjamin Jr .'s estate .
5 .

6 .
His son William and John are positively identified through deeds which name Benjamin as their
father . He and Constance appear to have had additional children as outlined below :
AL
William b .1772 . Birth date in Ref. 3 . Sold land 1803 which he had been given "by my father,
Benjamin ." Ref. 3 names two wives, sisters, Jemima Dawson and Rebecca (Dawson) Warren ;
states he removed to Pulaski Co ., GA and names several children . However, all ofthat data
appears to apply to a William Loveless born c .1790, SC, later of Pulaski Co ., GA where 1830
census shows William 40/50, wife same, four males 20/30, a male 15/20, two females 10/15,
two females 5/10, one female and two males under five .
In 1818 William and wife Jemima sold 250A in Edgefield Co . on South Edisto River to
Daniel Hartley, land originally granted to Arthur Watson . The 1820 census there lists a
William 26/45, wife same, two males 10/15, one male and five females all under ten . In 1810
William is shown 26/45, one male 16/25, a female 10/15, two males under ten . It is yet
unclear whether the 1810 census is for the earlier William b .1772 and the 1820 census for the
younger c.1790, possibly father and son .
There is no question, however, that the William in Pulaski Co ., GA, was the younger man
perhaps with siblings in addition to his own children in residence in 1830 . On 2 Dec 1831
William sold 607 .5 acres in Pulaski Co . to Simon Wooton ; no dower release by wife ;
witnessed by B . D . Loveless, presumably Benjamin D . Loveless born circa 1807, SC, who
was no doubt one of the males in William's home .
By 1834 William had relocated in Barbour Co ., AL, where in 1850 he married widow Nancy
Warren, his next-door-neighbor and mother of several children, some ofwhom married the
PART II - JOHN BAPTIST LOVELACE BORN 1712
Numerous deeds for John Baptist Lovelace are located at the Maryland Hall of Records . His will
dated 13 July 1765, Frederick County [Will Liber 3, p.32] leaves widow Eleanor 120 acres of
"Hermitage" and part of the Resurvey joining James Edmonston's land . The will specifies to son
Charles all the remaining part of the Resurvey ; to son Isaac 121 .5 acres of "Job's Content" in
Charles County . John Baptist was deceased by 16 August 1765 . At Eleanor's death the property
7 .

8 .
bequeathed to her was to be divided among sons William, Elias, and Luke . Eleanor was to receive
one third of his personal property, the remainder to be divided equally among children Archibald,
Vachel, Mary Ann, and Millisent .
On 21 June 1768 [Liber L, folio 350] in Frederick County, Charles Lovelace deeded his property
to Thomas Robey . On 28 March 1769, Charles County, [Liber O #3, folio 614] Isaac Lovelace of
Frederick County conveyed to Thomas Robey of Charles County 120 acres of Job's Content for one
pound sterling, twelve shillings, "his rights in said tract according to certificate dated 29 August
1750 ."
Thomas Robey who bought the Lovelace properties had married John Baptist Lovelace's widow
Eleanor . They relocated in Rowan County, North Carolina, probably preceded by her sons Isaac and
William . Eleanor's will dated 28 October 1776, Rowan County, names all ofJohn Baptist's children,
including "my well beloved son William" as executor . She noted that her son Archibald was under
nineteen, daughter Millisent under seventeen, and referred to daughter as Mary Ann Shaw . Witnesses
were her sons Luke and Charles and stepson Nathan Robey .
Thomas Robey's will dated 17 May 1773, probated 1774, Rowan County, bequeathed land on
Fifth Creek to Eleanor and named his children : Nathan, Prior Smallwood, Ann, Virlinda, and
Charlotte Robey and daughter Sarah Lovelace [believed to have married Charles Lovelace] .
Also mentioned was his property in Maryland and an improvement upon which "Luke Lovelace
and other ofhis brothers live ." He named Vachel, Millisent, Archibald, Isaac, and Charles Lovelace .
The will implies that some of John Baptist Lovelace's sons may not have been satisfied with the
disposition of their father's estate . A deed in Frederick County may have been the cause ofthat
dissatisfaction .
On 1 October 1771, Frederick County, William Lovelace, "Gentleman, late ofFrederick County,"
sold for forty-five pounds to Thomas Robey of Frederick County 129 acres of "Hermitage" and
twenty-three acres of the Resurvey -- the entire bequest made by John Baptist to his widow, which at
her death was to be divided among William and his younger brothers . The deed was recorded on 28
October 1771, and William personally appeared to affix his seal .

The Maryland Hall of Records staffwas unable to locate any document authorizing William
Lovelace to sell his minor brothers' inheritance, or any guardianship petition for them . Evidently at
Eleanor's marriage to Thomas Robey her son William came into full possession ofthe properties his
father had left her . This may have resulted in a loss of inheritance for the younger boys, Elias and
Luke .
Based upon parish records, pension applications, census enumerations, and Eleanor's will the birth
dates of John Baptist Lovelace's children are determined as follows, although the order ofthe first
three is speculative :
William c.1742
Isaac c.1744
Charles c.1746
Mary c.1751
Millisent
Elias , 27 Jan 1755
Luke c.1757
Vachel, 12 June 1759
Archibald , 26 July 1761
c.1764
"Late of Frederick County" by 1 October 1771, it is conceivable that William Lovelace had by
that date relocated in Rowan County, North Carolina with his brother Isaac . He may have been there
as early as January of that year as will be explained . The earliest record for his brother Isaac in
Rowan County is dated 10 August 1771 in the index to Court minutes : "King vs . Isaac Loveless."
Published state records of North Carolina, Vol . 24 p.492 reveal that the Legislature passed a
resolution to establish taxation based upon whether the land holder had sworn allegiance to the
Colony . According to Professor Cooke of the American History Department, University of Chicago,
the wording implies that sixteen was the minimum age to which the law applied .
The 1778 tax list ofRowan County bears the names of six of John Baptist Lovelace's seven sons,
if one presumes that Charles is his son of that name . The only son not listed is Archibald . Volume 14
p.2242 of "North Carolina Genealogy/North Carolinian" published the names of those who had not
yet taken the Oath in 1778 : Elias and Luke Lovelace, Capt . Reed's District ; Isaac, William, and
Vetchell [sic] in Capt . Caldwell's .
Archibald was then seventeen years of age but is not on the tax roll . He may have then resided in
Maryland . His stepfather's 1773 will implied that his stepson Luke "and some of his bothers" were
then living on Robey's Maryland property . It appears that some ofthe younger children returned
9 .

1 0 .
to Maryland . Millisent is probably the same who acquired a license in Prince George County [where
her brothers' births were recorded] to marry Francis Alexander, 22 December 1783 .
Luke Lovelace witnessed his mother's will in 1776 and appears on the 1778 tax roll and the list of
those who had not taken the Oath, but no further record of him is found in Rowan County .
Archibald is on neither the tax list nor the Oath survey . He is not in any North Carolina census if
one accepts the evidence that Archibald of Iredell/Wilkes Counties was a different man, based upon
signatures and other data previously cited .
Elias and Vachel eventually enlisted as patriot soldiers . Isaac and Charles' names later appear on
jury rolls in Rowan and Iredell Counties, respectively, a privilege extended only to patriots .
William's absence from area records after July 1779 is conspicuous . If he continued to abstain
from the Oath of Allegiance without "showing cause by disability," his lands would have been
confiscated . Ifhe were the same who married Margery Beall and resided in Rowan/Iredell County
from 1779 to 1783 as has been believed, it is at least strange that no reference to him is found during
that time, particularly on a jury, as William who married Margery Beall was an American soldier .
Other implications that John Baptist's son William was not this William born 1747 will be examined
later in this paper .
A portion ofRef. I is devoted to the children named in the 1765 will of John Baptist Lovelace .
Based upon the erroneous belief that this will was for a much older man, one of whose sons was
William born 1720, the birth dates of the children were spread over approximately fifty years with
Eleanor presented as a second wife to accommodate the wide range ofbirths . To dispel that distorted
view ofthe family, the following is a summary of John Baptist's children .
ISAAC LOVELACE circa 1744
He sold property inherited from his father to his stepfather in 1769 and removed to Rowan
County, North Carolina, by August 1771 as mentioned previously . Deed Book 7 pp 458/459 Isaac
bought from William and Martha Archibald for seventy pounds 328 acres on Fifth Creek, Rowan
County, granted to William Archibald, deceased, and left to son William Jr . ; witnessed by

Andrew Reed and Thomas Archibald, 16 March 1772 . Two days later Isaac Lovelace and wife
Catherine deeded part of this property to Thomas Robey .
Rowan County, 29 July 1779 : Isaac and Catherine sold to Nathan Robey a 238-acre parcel on the
south side of the south fork ofFifth Creek, part of a tract made over by Earl of Granville to William
Archibald Jr ., deceased, inherited from his father and then made over by deed from William
Archibald Jr . to Isaac Lovelace on 16 March 1772, bounded by Hugh Bowman ; witnessed by Basil
Roberson, William Lovelace, and Archibald Lovelace . Recorded in open court Feb 1786 session,
oath of Archibald Lovelace .
Rowan County Bk A pp 444/445, dated 6 Feb 1787 : Nathan Robey by deed of indenture for 150
pounds sold to "John, David, and James Lovelace, sons of Isaac," part of a 640-acre parcel on Fifth
Creek granted 1752 to Rev . John Thompson, 320 acres of said tract willed to Roger Lawson and
deeded to James Roseborough Sr ., later deeded to John Roseborough, son of James ; then 29 March
1768 to Margaret Roseborough; then 26 Dec 1772 deeded to Isaac Lovelace and conveyed to said
Nathan Robey, said property to be equally divided among Isaac's three-named sons, witnessed by
Thomas Archibald, James Swinford, and Nancy Robey ; recorded 20 November 1792 .
The inventory of Isaac Lovelace's estate is described in the back of Iredell County Minute Book
1800-1807, dated August 1786 : 300 acres to David Beall [62 pounds] ; 48 acres to Archibald
Lovelace [15 pounds 10 shillings] ; 100 acres to James Taylor [21 pounds] .
On 23 February 1792, Iredell County, Matthew Campbell was appointed guardian ofJno .
Lovelace, presumably Isaac's son John . On the same date David Beall was named guardian of
minors Nancy and Eleanor Lovelace . Jacob Nicholas, Christopher Houston, and Burgess Gaither
attended court to settle the estate ofIsaac Lovelace on 16 June 1792 .
Some published Lovelace and Beall genealogies state that Isaac's brother Charles married
Catherine Beall born 1731, daughter ofJames and Margaret (Edmonston) . James Beall's will 1783
names his daughter "Catrina Loveless" but not her husband . Maryland Chancery Court records list
the marriage before 1781 of -- Lovelace and Catherine Beall .
On 23 August 1810, Montgomery County, Maryland, James Loveless and Zadoc Leach ofRowan
County, North Carolina, took an oath that Zachariah Gaither, Thomas Taylor, and Sarah Taylor were
the legal representatives of Catherine Taylor nee Beall for purposes of settling the estate ofMargaret
Beall, widow of James .
1 1 .

12 .
Zadoc Leach and James Loveless who represented Catherine Beall Taylor were probably son-in-
law and son of Isaac and Catherine Lovelace . Zadoc had married in 1794, Rowan County, Nancy
Lovelace, presumably the Nancy for whom David Beall was named guardian on the same date
Matthew Campbell was named guardian ofJno . Lovelace, believed to be Isaac's son John .
Further specified in Margaret Beall's settlement [Montgomery Co . Will Bk K, pp 188/192] :
Zachariah Gaither, guardian of Sarah Taylor, infant, appointed James Lanham and Zadoc Leach of
Montgomery County to receive for her . James Loveless and Zadoc Leach, guardians of Sarah and
Isaac Taylor, received for them .
If Catherine Beall was born in 1731, she would have been fifty-five when she married Taylor after
Isaac Lovelace's death in 1786 . She could not have been the mother of any minor children in 1809 . It
is possible that the Taylor girls were step-grandchildren of Catherine . Ifthey were blood heirs of
Catherine Beall Lovelace Taylor, her 1731 birth date as presented in Beall genealogies must be
erroneous by perhaps a full ten years.
Regardless ofthe Taylor girls' relationship to her, there is little question that Catherine was Isaac
Lovelace's widow and that she had married a Taylor . She certainly did not also marry Isaac's brother
Charles as has sometimes been speculated . Charles' wife was evidently deceased when he wrote his
will in 1796 ; his children were born between 1767 and 1780 . In 1772 and 1779 deeds identify Isaac
Lovelace's wife as Catherine .
Only the three sons named in the 1787 deed from Nathan Robey are known to be Isaac and
Catherine's children ; but there were probably others who married in Rowan County, as summarized
below :
David c.1770 , Maryland . Believed to be the same in early Roane Co ., TN . records. First wife
unknown ; second wife, Mary Smith . Removed to Fayette Co ., IL . In 1880 two children
separately gave Maryland as his birthplace . Died before 1850 .
James c.1772 . Probably the same who mar . 1793, Rowan Co ., NC, Sarah McDaniel ; Isaac
Hudson, bond ; Elias Lovelace [uncle] and Zadoc Leach, witnesses . Resided 1810 Surrey
Co ., NC ; followed uncle Elias to Butler Co ., Ky . where some children were born . In 1822
removed to Clark Co ., IL where in 1830 census widow Sarah was 50/60 with four children .
John c.1775 . Iredell Co ., NC, 24 Nov 1791 : bound until age 21 to Matthew Campbell Jr. who
was appointed guardian of "Jno ." in February 1792 . Probably the same who mar. Sarah
Cash c.1800 and drowned in the fall of 1810 . Widow Sarah age 26/45 with four children
under 10 in 1810 Iredell Co . ; she removed to Woodford Co ., Ky. ; thence to Marion Co .,
Missouri .

prob. George c . 1770's . Resided near David in Roane Co ., TN. ; age 50/60 in 1830 ; wife 40/50 ;
a female 15/20 ; one male and one female, both 10/15 .
prob . Mahala c.1774 . Mar. 1794, Rowan Co ., as "Haley," Samuel Doyle .
prob . Nancy c.1776 . Mar . 1794, Rowan Co ., Zadoc Leach .
prob. Eleanor c.1778 . In 1792 David Beall was appointed guardian for her and presumed
sister Nancy .
[NOTE : The Robertson book erroneously states that John Baptist Lovelace's son Isaac m . on 7 Jan
1794, Prince George County, Maryland, Sarah Barrett . Two children ofIsaac and Sarah were
baptized there . In the 1800 census Isaac was only 16/25, wife the same age, one son and two
daughters under ten .
That Isaac was a generation too young to be John Baptist's son who was living in North Carolina by
1771 . By 1810, however, the younger Isaac born circa 1775 had moved to Rowan County, North
Carolina, and was a widower age 26 to 45 with the son and two daughters all ten to fifteen and three
more sons under ten .
He then married there 26 Feb 1811 Susanna Wingler . The daughter baptized in Maryland married in
Rowan County as noted below . The second daughter born before the 1800 Maryland census was
probably Winny . Isaac was probably the same who removed to Pike County, Indiana . In 1850
census there Susannah Lovelace born North Carolina, age 54 .
Massa Ann, bapt 15 Oct 1796 ; mar . 1816, Rowan Co ., Thos . Hartly .
Joseph Hanson , bapt 31 March 1799
probably Winny c.1797 ; mar . 1816, Rowan Co ., John Blaze .]
CHARLES c.1746? Although his wife is identified by some as Catherine Beall, as mentioned,
Charles' wife's name appears on no documents found in Maryland or North Carolina . She was most
likely his step-sister, Sarah Robey named in her father's will 1773 as "daughter Sarah Lovelace ."
Charles, his sons, and his daughter Cassandra all named their daughters Sarah, none, Catherine .
Thomas Robey also had daughters Ann and Verlinda for whom Charles named his daughters, and his
eldest son was Thomas .
Charles settled in that part of Rowan County later set offas Iredell . Court records there mention
him frequently, including Grand Jury duty, which classifies him as a Patriot . His will dated 8
October 1796, Iredell County, mentions no wife but names seven children . The 1790 Iredell census
lists him over 16, two males under 16, three females . He received land grant #1401 for 350 acres on
Dutchman's Creek, Iredell County, 24 Aug 1778 . Dates for his children were provided by Mrs .
Luther Kelly Jr . ofHouma, Louisiana 1981 .

whose name appears with her brothers, as not having taken the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 . Robert
Shaw witnessed Thomas Robey's will 1773 . The 1790 Laurens Dist ., SC census includes a Robert
mother's will 1776, Rowan County . No further records found there for Luke Lovelace .
The material presented for him in Ref. 1 states that he married in 1800 Mary Ridgeway. This
appears to be erroneous . In the 1850 Warren County, Virginia census, listed #352 : Luke Lovelace,
seventy-two, b . Maryland ; wife Mary, seventy, b . Maryland . With them were Barbara Lovelace,
thirty-seven, and Isabella, twelve, born in Virginia ; perhaps the widow and daughter ofLuke and
Mary's son, Luke Harris Lovelace baptized 1 March 1807, Prince George County, Maryland .
Presuming that this Warren County couple were Luke and Mary (Ridgway), that Luke Lovelace
was born approximately thirteen years after the death ofJohn Baptist Lovelace and obviously could
not be his son .
VACHEL, 12 June 1759 , Frederick County, Maryland ; mar . 1778, Rowan County, North Carolina,
Margaret Adams and removed by 1789 to Madison County, Kentucky, where he appears on the tax
list that year . He died 15 Jan 1837, McCracken County, Kentucky . He served in the Revolution . The
International Genealogical Index of the L.D .S . Library lists his children :
George Adams , 13 Mar 1780 Elias, 6 April 1788
William, 10 March 1783 Milly , 19 Feb 1790
Elizabeth, 25 June 1785 Walter, - July 1797
ARCHIBALD, 26 July 1761 , Prince George County, Maryland . He was probably one ofthe
unnamed stepsons of Thomas Robey who in 1773 lived in Maryland . Three days after his eighteenth
birthday he witnessed a deed in Roman County between brother Isaac and Nathan Robey . In
February 1786 he signed an oath that he had witnessed that 1779 document .
On 23 Feb 1779, Rowan County, Isaac Lovelace requested that a tract of 100 acres of his
property be surveyed and laid off, bounded by the lands ofJohn Murdock, William Archibald, and
Alexander Reed on Fifth Creek waters . [Land Grant 1778 .] This description also is given in an
accompanying document, same Grant number, for 48 acres to Archibald Lovelace surveyed 2 Feb
1786 by William Prather with David Beall and John Vickers, chain bearers . Archibald entered this
grant with the Register on 9 Aug 1787 by virtue of an 18-month warrant .

Although this Grant No . 1778 is filed under Archibald's name in Raleigh, his name is not
mentioned on the original survey instigated by Isaac in February 1779 . Attached to that document,
however, is No . 2370, Rowan County, Archibald Lovelace, 48 acres, Grant No . 1585, 9 Aug 1787,
entry No . 1778, Book 67 p .196, entered 23 Feb 1779, located on waters of Fifth Creek .
Included with these records is a separate record : Isaac Loveless No . 1778, 100 acres by
executors, 23 Feb 1779 : 1 do hereby assign the within warrant unto Archibald Lovelace, heirs, and
assigns for value pro . Witness my hand this 4th day of Nov 1786 ; Charles Lovelace, exec . ; witnessed
by Thomas Prather .
Archibald's signature on this record, as displayed on a preceding page, proves that he is not the
same who married Jean Irwin and resided in Wilkes County.
MILLISENT c.1764 . She is referred to by that name in the wills of both parents and of her stepfather
and most assuredly is not "Amelia" Beall, wife ofEvan and sister of Archibald Lovelace ofWilkes
County . As suggested previously, she probably married Francis Alexander of Prince George County,
Maryland .
PART III - WILLIAM LOVELACE born circa 1742
In addition to Samuel McClendon's record naming his ancestor as William Lovelace "Jr .," no
official document has yet been located styling him as such . IfMcClendon had not provided exact
birth data for William Sr., and had McClendon not also identified other sons of William Sr . [Aaron
and Archibald], it is possible that no doubt would have arisen regarding the tradition that William
b.1747 who married Margery Beall was the son ofJohn Baptist Lovelace .
If one considers that McClendon was knowledgeable about his Lovelace ancestors, and
indications are that he was, then John Baptist's son William becomes by effect a non-entity . It is
known that John Baptist's son William lived in Rowan County at least in 1776 through 1779 and that
he had moved from Frederick County, Maryland, in 1771 .
Ifdata previously attributed to him is now assigned to William "Jr .," John Baptist's son William
becomes eligible to be the William Lovelace of North Carolina identified as their great-grandfather
by two individuals who probably were unaware of each other's existence, one in Alabama and one in
North Carolina . The next portions of this paper examine that theory .

John Draper's account of the descendants ofJohn Loveless of South Carolina and Alabama
[Ref. 4] contains a quotation from Mary (Loveless) Moore born 1838, daughter of John Jr . and
granddaughter of John Loveless born circa 1766 : "John Loveless [Sr .] was the first son of William .
John and his wife Mary are buried in Jonesboro in the southern part ofJefferson Co ., Alabama ."
Although that work, apparently still quoting Mrs . Moore, states that John Loveless Sr. was born
in England, in the 1870 census of Jonesboro his daughter Mary (Loveless) Nichols/Nicholas stated
that neither of her parents was born outside of America.
There is scarcely any question that John Loveless Sr . born circa 1766 was a brother to James
Loveless/lace born 13 January 1771, North Carolina, which thereby places William Loveless in North
Carolina at that date .
The second reference to William was made by Dr. Thomas Beatty Lovelace in 1951 when he
wrote to Rev . Jean Maire of Jacksonville, Florida : "My great-grandfather was William Lovelace . He
married a Miss Watson of Virginia and had sons Asa, Nathan, and Benjamin . Their mother died
when the boys were very young . William remarried but died soon . His widow married Abraham
Cantrell, a Revolutionary War soldier from Salisbury District, Rowan Co ., North Carolina ."
In 1850 the son Nathan [b.1782] gave Virginia as his birthplace . In 1880 sons of Nathan's
brother Asa [b .1785] gave Asa's birthplace as North Carolina.
Mrs . Moore's statement that her grandfather John was the "first son" is significant . Ofthe
several men who appear to have been John's brothers, all were evidently younger than he . It is also
relevant that Asa Lovelace, "son of William," resided briefly near these Loveless men in Greenville
County, South Carolina, and that his widow's application for War of 1812 bounty lands styles him
consistently as Asa Loveless .
Abraham Cantrell who married William Lovelace's widow was born circa 1744 and was residing
in Spartanburg Co ., South Carolina, in 1790 but had resided in Rowan Co ., North Carolina, during
the Revolution . In 1790 he was one of three males over 16 with two under 16 and one female in his
household . His three sons by an unidentified first wife were Abraham, Richard, and John . These
three had a half-brother, Watson Cantrell . [Ref. 5 .] William Loveless/lace, ancestor of Mrs . Moore
and Dr . Lovelace, is not in any Carolina census and evidently died before 1790 . Some ofthe children
in the Cantrell household were probably the Lovelace stepchildren .
If it is difficult for some to acknowledge that two William Lovelaces ofthe same approximate
age resided in Rowan County or nearby during the 1770's, it would be even more difficult to believe

there were three . Thus it appears certain that John Loveless born circa 1766 [and probably his
Loveless contemporaries in South Carolina, including James b.1771, North Carolina] was a son ofthe
same William named by Dr . Lovelace as the father ofNathan, Benjamin, and Asa Lovelace .
Family records provided by Prof Marc Hoyle Lovelace [Ref. 5] reveal that Dr . Thomas B .
Lovelace's grandfather was Asa born 1785 . Abraham Cantrell owned property in Rutherford Co .,
North Carolina, some of which he sold for two hundred dollars in 1811 to his stepson, Asa Lovelace
[Rutherford Co . Deed Book 24-26 p.482] .
Asa does not appear in the North Carolina census until 1820 and is unquestionably the same in
the 1810 Greenville Co ., South Carolina census with a wife and one son under ten . With them also
was a male age ten to fifteen .
This appearance of Asa Lovelace born 1785, North Carolina, "son of William," near the
Greenville Co ., South Carolina, property of John Loveless, "first son of William," solidly links their
relationship as half-brothers.
Exhaustive research has failed to produce documentation oftheir exact kinship, but it is probable
that the following men ofNewberry and Greenville Counties, South Carolina, were brothers, sons of
William Lovelace by a first wife :
John c.1766 , eldest son of William . Resided 1790 Newberry Co . next to William and Hazzel
Loveless . Resided 1800 Greenville Co ., next to James Loveless b.1771, NC, and near
Isaac Loveless Sr. Missing from 1810 SC census at which time Asa Lovelace appears .
Sold land in Greenville Co . 1813 and removed to Jefferson Co ., AL, followed by or
accompanied by James Loveless' eldest daughter and her husband .
William c.1768 . Resided Newberry Co . 1790 with probable unmarried siblings in his
household . In 1800 there was age 26/45, married, a son under ten, one adult female in
addition to wife .
Hazel/Hazzel c.1770 . Resided Newberry Co . next to William and John in 1790 ; died there
1838, age 70 . [James b .1771 named son Hazel .]
James, 13 Jan 1771 , NC . Married c.1791 Linna Hughes, dtr of George of Newberry Co .
Bought land next to John Loveless in Greenville Co . where he resided 1800-1846 ;
eldest son named William .
Isaac Sr . c.1773 . Mar . Polly/Mary Hughes, dtr of George and sister of James' wife
Linna. Resided near James and John in Greenville Co . Will was witnessed by James'
son William .
Samuel c.1775 . Resided near Abraham Cantrell in 1800 Spartanburg Co ., SC, age 16/25,
married, a son under ten . No further records found .

It is noteworthy that the older group of presumed brothers utilized the Loveless spelling,
although in a deed pertaining to the estate of George Hughes, his sons-in-law are identified as James
and Isaac Lovelace . If their father had deliberately changed his name in a political break with his
family, his older sons would have followed his example. The three younger "sons of William"
usually retained the original Lovelace [although Asa's bounty land record identifies him as Asa
Loveless], understandable as they were reared by a stepfather and had not known their father well
enough to have been influenced by him . [The "less" spelling was not a quirk ofcensus takers .
Descendants of these men adhered almost unanimously to that spelling until many years later .]
"A disheartening lack of Revolutionary era records exists in Newberry County," according to a
professional researcher who was engaged to examine non-Loveless deeds there for a reference in any
capacity to the Loveless name . Prior to obtaining that researcher's services, it had been determined
that only one Loveless deed was on file in Newberry County, and that had been misindexed under
Loreless .
That one deed, however, did provide invaluable information as it identified the wives ofJames
and Isaac Loveless and proved that these two, later of Greenville County, must have resided in
Newberry County when they married . The contents of that deed will be outlined later in this paper .
Following are summaries ofthe eight apparent sons ofWilliam Lovelace/less of the Carolinas :
JOHN LOVELESS, "FIRST SON"
He was probably born c.1766 . No records for him were located in Newberry County where
p.76 of the 1790 census lists him over sixteen with a wife but no children yet, next door to William
and Hazzel Loveless .
Greenville County indenture, 7 Dec 1798 : John Loveless paid one hundred dollars to Harris
Mullins for fifty acres in Greenville County on the north side of Little Horse Creek bounded on the
south by Henry Barrows' land, on the west by Jacob Nabors' line, on the north by the Heager (?) line,
on the east by Harris Mullins' line, being part of a tract granted to William Story and conveyed to
Samuel Chastain, conveyed by said Chastain to said Mullins . Witnesses : William Gunnels and L .
Ragsdale, recorded 3 April 1815
In the 1800 Greenville County census on p .241 John was 26/45, wife age 16/25, three sons and a
daughter all under ten, next door to James Loveless .

20 .
Greenville County deed 6 Nov 1801 : James Holland for 250 dollars sold to John Loveless a tract
of 233 acres in Greenville District, lying on the waters of Line Creek, Horse Creek waters ofthe
Saluda River, beginning at a red oak on Thomas Holland's line, running on Jennings Halsey's line,
etc ., on a line ofHendrick Arnold, deceased, on Benjamin Townsend's line, on Joseph Hill's line, on
James Loveless' line, on Thomas Holland's line to the beginning ; being part of two surveys, one
originally Granted to Charles Lascon, the other to Samuel Neighbors . Witnesses : Benjamin Arnold
and William Gunnell . Susanna Holling [sic], wife of James, relinquished dower rights 1 Dec 1801,
recorded 15 March 1802 .
Greenville County deed 10 Dec 1805 : John Loveless sold for 160 dollars to James Taylor a tract
of fifty acres in Greenville District ; description matching the parcel John had purchased 1798 from
Harris Mullins . Polly Loveless relinquished dower rights 6 April 1813 ; recorded 3 April 1815 .
The 18 10 Greenville County census does not include John Loveless . It is likely that he was in
Alabama at that time, seeking a new homestead. Asa Lovelace does appear in this single South
Carolina census, enumerated near Isaac Loveless Sr .
Draper's material on John Loveless [Ref. 4] contains the note that "Mr . William P . Loveless was
a merchant in this area [Jefferson county] for many years . He informed me that the Loveless/Sadler
house was built about 1815 ." This date coincides with the Greenville County sale of John's land, and
the 1850 census indicates that all of the children of John and Mary Loveless of Jefferson County,
Alabama, were born in South Carolina .
The 1820 Jefferson County census is lost; but in 1830 there John and wife were both sixty to
seventy years of age . Orphan's Court, Jefferson County, pp 18-22 : John Loveless, deceased, 24 Dec
1831 ; Richard Loveless posted bond of twelve hundred dollars as administrator with Seaborn J.
Matthews and Mary Loveless as sureties . The widow and sons bought most ofthe household and
farm equipment .
Deed Record 6 p .70, drawn 5 Nov 1836, recorded 17 May 1837 : widow Mary Loveless,
Elizabeth Nabors, John Hooker, Richard Loveless, Vinson Loveless, John Loveless, Joel
Nichols/Nicholas, and Keziah Loveless, all of Jefferson County, sold to Isaac Sadler for six hundred
dollars, including all that piece of land laid off to Mary Loveless for her dower.

These individuals were the surviving heirs of John Loveless . Keziah was the widow ofhis son
William M . ; John Hooker was the husband of John's daughter Rachel . Although not named in Mr .
Draper's compilation, Elizabeth Nabors was obviously a daughter, probably the eldest . [An Elizabeth
Nabors 1798-1882 is buried in Winston Co ., Mississippi, near Peter and Elizabeth (Loveless)
Crawford, son-in-law and daughter of James Loveless .]
The known children ofJohn and Polly/Mary Loveless are :
Richard c.1797, SC . Richard and Saletha Graham obtained a marriage license 19 Dec 1820,
Jefferson County . The will ofJoshua Graham, 17 Jan 1847, probated 10 Oct 1853, Jefferson
County, names wife Mary with daughter Leety Loveless to receive all that property left to
her mother at the mother's death ; son-in-law Richard Loveless, exec . wit . : J. T . Brown,
R . H . Green, James Tarrant .
Deed Record 5 p.198, drawn 5 Nov 1834, recorded 24 Jan 1835 : Richard bought land on
Five-Mile Creek for eight hundred dollars from Peter and Elizabeth Crawford . In the 1850
Jefferson County census : Richard, age 53, b . SC ; wife Letha, 50, b . Tenn .
An item dated 1856 in the "Chester [Chester Co ., SC] Standard" denotes the marriage
"in Jefferson County, Alabama," of Richard Loveless to Mrs . Narcissa Grisham by Mr .
Jones, Esquire . In the 1860 Jefferson County census at Green's Precinct, Elyton : Richard
Loveless, 62, b . SC ; wife Narcissa, 48, b . AL ; three children *'d . With them were George
and William Jones, ages fourteen and two, both born in Alabama.
The estate ofRichard Loveless was filed 10 May 1865 with his son Milton
administrator; bondsmen, Washington C . Burford and Nathaniel Hawkins . His wife
Narcissa died 28 Feb 1858 ; Milton Loveless, administrator . Children :
Elizabeth c .1798/99 . As Elizabeth Nabors, she with widowed mother and siblings sold her
father's property to Isaac Sadler in 1836 . Speculation : She is possibly the Elizabeth Nabors 1798-
1882 buried in Winston County, Mississippi, near her presumed first cousin, Elizabeth (Loveless)
Crawford, wife of Peter . Apparently widowed by 1836, it would be reasonable for Elizabeth Nabors
to accompany the Crawfords to Mississippi .
[As Winston County records for Elizabeth Nabors may not reveal that she came from Jefferson
County, Alabama, and Jefferson County records may not reveal that she memoved to Mississippi, it
would be a disservice not to mention this possibility . Two attempts to locate Elizabeth Nabors in the
1880 Winston County census proved fruitless due to the illegibility ofthe census film at two research
centers . It had been anticipated that the 1880 census would indicate where the Elizabeth Nabors of
Winston County was born, and ifin South Carolina, indicating that she could have been John
Loveless' daughter, what birthplace she gave for him . None ofJohn's other children survived until
1880, and Elizabeth's data would be valuable .]
Vinson c.1803 , SC . Jefferson County deeds indicate that he bought and sold land there in
transactions with his father and brothers . He was married there 25 Oct 1829 by William Moore, J .P .,
to Sally McLaughlin . The will of Andrew McLaughlin, 17 June 1854, probated 14 June 1858, names
his daughter Sarah A., wife of Vinson Loveless .
The 1850 Jonesboro (Jefferson) census p.146 lists Vinson, age 47, b . SC ; wife Sarah A ., 40 ; six
children . In 1860 Vinson was 57 ; Sarah, 50 ; two daughters *'d at home . In 1870 he and his wife
were 68 and 60, respectively . He evidently died before 1880 when Sarah A., 69, resided near
WILLIAM LOVELESS [JR?] circa 1768
In 1790 Newberry County, South Carolina census he lived next door to Hazel born 1770 and
John circa 1766 ; listed on page 76 : 2-1-2 . The others with him were probably unmarried siblings . In
1800 he was listed on page 83 as age twenty-six to forty-five with a male child under ten and
two females, one sixteen to twenty-five and another twenty-six to forty-five, presumably his wife and
an unmarried sister .
He is believed to be the father of at least two sons who removed to Lauderdale County, Alabama :
William b.1799 , SC . M. 15 August 1820, Newberry County, Elizabeth Whitmire b . 6 March
1803 who d . 25 July 1856 . William d . 7 Oct 1861 . Appears in 1820 Newberry County,
no children, he and wife both 16/25 . In 1830 he was in Lauderdale Co ., AL . In 1850
there enumerated as #576-593 age 51, SC ; Elizabeth, 46, SC . "Annals ofNewberry
Joseph c.1801? [See above notes for brother William .] In 1826 Joseph witnessed the will of
David Lavendar in Newberry County [Book L pp 37/39] . In 1830 Lauderdale Co ., AL,
Joseph was 30/40 ; wife 20/30, a dtr under five . In 1842 William Loveless appraised
estate of Joseph Loveless, deceased ; sale 23 March 1843 ; goods bought by unnamed
widow, William and Hazel Loveless . Widow was probably Rebecca Loveless, age 45
in 1850, age 54 in 1860, b . SC, residing with Margaret Lovelace, 55, SC, possibly sister
to Joseph and William . Wife was possibly Rebecca (Hayes) . Will of John Hayes, 31
March 1847, probated 28 Feb 1849, Newberry County, names "dtr Rebecca Loveless
and her dtrs Nancy Loveless and Mary Whitten ."

HAZEL/HAZZEL LOVELESS circa 1770
In the 1790 Newberry County, South Carolina census he is on p.76 next door to William and
John, shown over 16 with a male under 16 find three females . On p.83 in 1800 he is 26/45 with a
female the same age and one over 45 . The household also included two females 10/15, one under 10,
and three males all under 10 . In 1810 he was still 26/45 with two sons 16/25 and two under 10 . The
females included one over 45, two 16/25, one 10/15, and one under 10 .
The cemetery at Lower Duncan's Creek Baptist Church has a gravestone for Hazzel Loveless
who died 30 July 1838, age sixty-eight . Despite his at least 48 years of residence there, no deeds or
estate records are indexed for him . Published county records indicate only that Harrel [sic ; probably
Hassel] Loveless served as petit juror for the July 1794 term . On 2 March 1820 his property was
mentioned as a boundary for lands of George Hipp and William Whitmire on Haw Creek Branch of
Patterson's Creek, waters ofthe Enoree River .
Several ofthe name who left Newberry County for Lauderdale County, Alabama, may have been
his children [*'d below] . No record of his heirs is found, but census enumerations cited above
indicate numerous offspring :
In 1850 Lauderdale County, Alabama, Mary and Margaret Loveless, both born SC, ages 60 and 55
respectively, lived with Loveless men and their families . James Loveless [circa 1801?] Appears in the
1830 Newberry County census with a wife, several children, and a female 60/70 . Lauderdale County,
AL, 25 Feb 1839 : Joseph Loveless administrator of estate of James Loveless, deceased; sale of
personal property to widow [unnamed], John and William Loveless . His widow is probably Frances
in the 1840 census there age 30/40, two females 10/15, two males five to ten, two males under five .
Listed #596 in 1850 : Frances, 46, SC ; sons John, 18 ; Hazel, 16 ; George W ., 13, all born in Alabama.
Joseph Loveless, administrator of presumed brother James' estate, married 16 Dec 1841,
Lauderdale County, Elmira Davis . He died before 26 April 1846 when his widow married there
Hazel Loveless who in 1854 was appointed guardian of minor Josephine Ann, heir ofJoseph
Loveless, deceased .
Hazel Loveless was listed #595 in 1850 census there, age 32, b . SC ; wife Almyra, 30, b . Ala;
their two eldest children ; and step-daughter/niece, Josephine, age eight . With them was Lucy Franks,
Mrs . O . B . Carter ofFort Worth, Texas, descends from Francis Lovlace [spelled in Bible record]
who was born 13 Oct 1793, South Carolina, and who appears to be a son ofHazel ofNewberry
County . The Bible gives no maiden name but a birth date of 6 June 1800 for Francis' wife Elizabeth .
In 1830 this couple resided in Pickens County, SC . They resided in Lauderdale County . Alabama, in
1850 but removed by 1860 to Lauderdale County, Tennessee where several children married .
It is not known why Francis/Frank Lovlace and his family were also enumerated in the 1860
Laurence County, Alabama census with basically the same data given for them in the Lauderdale
County, Tenn ., census that year except for some variations in the children's birthplaces. Francis'
married son George and his family are included in both state/counties also . Mrs . Carter's records
JAMES LOVELESS/LACE born 1771 , North Carolina
In April 1978 Mrs . Anne B . McGuirk of Birmingham, Alabama, a great-great-granddaughter of
James, a great-granddaughter of Hazel, wrote to Wade T . Lovelace of Houston, Texas : "This record
of James Loveless' family and his son Hazel's family was copied from bits and pieces of burned
pages ofHazel's Bible ." Then listed :
James Lovelace, born January 13, 1771 ; died March 1, 1846
married [name obliterated] born December I --
children :
-- Lovelace, December 21, 1792 . [This is William, named in James' will .
William's Bible gives his birth date the same .]
Linna Loveless, March 2, 1816
James Loveless/lace married probably in 1791, Newberry County, South Carolina, Linna/Linney
Hughes, daughter of George and Jemima . He was not a head of household until 1800 in Greenville
County, and his eldest child was born in 1792 . The Hughes deeds cited in subsequent material for
Isaac Loveless Sr. provide proof of Linna's identity.
[About thirty-five years ago Mattie (Loveless) Hood, daughter ofJohn G., granddaughter of
Levi, and great-granddaughter of James Loveless, compiled a brief record of her family. Although
she named all of James' children, she called him "George" Loveless and named his wife as
Linnie/Lindley Timmons) . This confounded James' descendants for many years .
It is now theorized that Mrs . Hood knew she had an ancestor named George who married a Miss
Timmons, but that she placed him in the wrong generation . It appears that he was George Hughes,
father-in-law of James Loveless ; and that George's wife Jemima was perhaps the daughter of Thomas
Timmons, George Hughes' earliest neighbor in Newberry County. Research into this possible
connection continues .]
meanders of said branch to the beginning corner, being part of a tract of446 acres originally granted
to said Samuel Neighbors . Neighbors signed by a mark; witnessed by James Holland and Joseph
Hill . Rebecca Neighbors waived her dower rights 14 March 1800, Hudson Berry, J .P . Recorded 23
January 1801 .
Greenville County, 27 Nov 1823 : James Loveless bought for $350 from Levi Loveless of Clarke
County, Georgia [his son] a tract of 110 acres on the Horse Creek waters of Reedy River bounding on
Benjamin Arnold's land to the Indian Line boundary line .
In the 1800 Greenville County census James Loveless is enumerated next to John Loveless . He
appears in all Federal censuses through 1840 . His will dated 28 August 1845 gives wife Linna Sr .,
home plantation of 200 acres . Another 250 acres to be sold with six slaves (Jim, Abbey, Bob, Mary,
Martha, and Rachel) along with the balance of his estate, the proceeds to be equally divided among
his children William, Levi, Thomas, Hazel, Allen, Jesse, Elizabeth Crawford, and children of son
John, deceased .
His wife Linna was also bequeathed a slave, Charlotte, who at Linna's death was to be sold and
her increase divided among James' children James T ., Mary, Ruth, and Linna Jr. At his wife's death
James' farm was to go to son James T . by his paying $100 each to the daughters Mary, Ruth, and
Linna Jr . Some livestock and furniture were also itemized for the younger children .
Witnesses were George Gambell, Archibald Johnson [possibly the same who married Isaac
Loveless' daughter Elizabeth], and Mason N . Gambell . The will was probated 13 July 1846, James
having died 1 March, according to son's Bible .
In the 1850 Cass County, Georgia census Linna Loveless, age 77, born in South Carolina,
resided with her unmarried daughter Ruth . In 1880 Bartow County [formerly Cass] Ruth lived alone
and gave North Carolina as her father's birthplace, South Carolina as her mother's .

James and Linna (Hughes) Loveless were the grandparents of sixty-nine children by their sons
alone ; their daughters' children are unknown . Descendants of some of James and Linna's offspring
have not been located thus little is known of recent generations for those lines . A partial summary of
the descendants of James and Linna follows .
William, 21 Dec 1792 , SC, probably Newberry County . Enlisted Nov 1813 in War of 1812,
discharged March 1814, Georgetown . Witnessed the 1826 will of his probable uncle Isaac Loveless
Sr . Listed on p .95 near Isaac Loveless in 1820 Greenville County age twenty-six to forty-five,
unidentified first wife sixteen to twenty-five, a son under ten . Married secondly 29 Sept 1829,
DeKalb County, Georgia, Caroline Carlton born January 1813, Georgia .
In 1830 he appeared in the DeKalb County census . It is worth noting that in the 1832 Georgia
land lottery three of William's brothers [Allen, Hazel, and Levi] were included, as well as one
William B . Loveliless . This most probably is William Loveless, but no other mention of him
indicates a middle initial or this odd spelling of his name .
In 1981 J. Ray King of Decatur, Georgia, a descendant of William's brother Levi, discovered
among his mother's possessions a hand-written list of Lovelesses with notations on membership in an
unidentified church, perhaps the Mt . Zion Baptist Church in Gwinnett County, Georgia, where Levi
Loveless was a minister . Those listed are Hazel and Linna (Riley) and their two eldest daughters,
William's brother and family ; William and Mrs . Caroline Loveless ; and Cooper B . and Narcissa
Loveless . A baptism date of October 1841 follows the names ofHazel, William, and Caroline .
The inclusion ofthe name Cooper B . on this family record was a revelation . Cooper B . Loveless
born circa 1818, South Carolina, and his wife Narcissa had been located in the 1850 Summerville
(Chattooga) Georgia census where also resided children of Isaac and Polly (Hughes) Loveless . There
had been no indication of Cooper's relationship to those families . The church membership record
implied that he was William's son, which in turn led to examining the 1820 Greenville County census
in which William with a wife and young son appears .
In June 1931 Mrs . Goldie Caroline (Loveless) Pike of Daytona Beach, Florida, a granddaughter
ofWilliam's son Henry C . Loveless, reported by telephone that her grandfather had told her that his
father, William b . 1792, had been married twice, and that he, Henry C ., had had an older half-brother .
29.

30 .
Mrs . Pike could not recall the name ofthe half-brother, but there is no doubt that he was Cooper B .
Loveless whose only son of five children born before 1850 was named William .
In 1840 William was enumerated in both the DeKalb County, Georgia, census near Cooper B .,
and also in Greenville County, South Carolina . His younger brother, John H., died in 1840, leaving
widow and children . William may have returned to Greenville County to be of assistance and was
there when the census was taken .
His son Cooper B . may have considered William a permanent resident ofDeKalb County,
Georgia, and requested that William be included in that census . William was "of DeKalb County"
when his father's will was written in 1845 .
The clerk ofthe Rocky Mountain Baptist Church at Stone Mountain (DeKalb County) has
written that the church was formed in 1837 and reconstituted in September 1847 with twenty-four
charter members who included William, Caroline, and Linne Loveless . Linne could have been either
his widowed mother or eldest daughter . In 1855 two other Lovelesses, William and J -- [probably
sons William R . and James] joined the church . All five were dismissed by letter on 7 Dec 1859 .
In 1850 William and his second wife Caroline and their children were enumerated in Stone
Mountain . He applied for and received a land grant in Randolph County, Alabama, where the family
relocated by 1860 . A court clerk's hand-written transcription ofWilliam and Caroline's "very small
Bible" records includes the remark that the Bible had been faithfully maintained until "the deaths of
William and Martha V . Loveless ." Martha V . was his youngest daughter who died about the same
time as William .
[It has been learned that Aurilla (Loveless) Harless of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1981, the last
surviving grandchild of William asked a daughter ofHenry C ., has in her possession a "very small,
very old Bible" from her father's home. The author plans to visit Mrs . Harless to determine if this is
William's Bible . Mrs . Harless also has the only known picture of Caroline .]
The Randolph County courthouse burned in the late 1800's, eliminating any possibilities of
locating estate or marriage records for this family .
William's death date is recorded in his widow's pension application as 20 March 1873, Randolph
County . In 1880 Caroline resided at "Morrison's," probably the present Morrison's
Crossroads,Randolph County. She stated that she and both parents were born in Georgia . Caroline

died 10 August 1883 . Plans for her burial were written by a daughter-in-law, Hazel's wife Aurilla
Victoria (Jordan), to another daughter-in-law, Manda (Nixon), widow of Levi T . The author has a
copy of this letter.] William and Caroline's burial sites are unknown . They were possibly interred at
the Union Baptist Church where two unidentified sons are buried in unmarked graves, according to
son Hazel's statement to his granddaughter, Mary Etta (Loveless) Carpenter, a resident of Anniston,
Alabama in 1981 . The children in the Bible :
Liney Elizabeth, 30 Dec 1830 ; unmarried in 1860 ; untraced .
James Lewis, 26 Nov 1833 ; unmarried 1860 . Enlisted Co . G. 47th AL . Inf ; wounded at Battle
Mrs . Harold Weeks of Scottsboro, Alabama in 1976 provided information on Allen and
Roxanna's children . When the author contacted her by telephone to learn whether she had acquired
any information on Allen Loveless' grandparents, Mrs . Weeks was unaware that Allen was a brother
to William Loveless b .1792 whose descendants had operated a hotel in Scottsboro [William Abner
entirely logical that she would have known her parents' birthplaces .
ISAAC LOVELESS SR . circa 1773
An article pertaining to him and his children in Ref. 1 is badly garbled . It combines references
to him with data which applies to his son, Isaac Jr. A descendant of Isaac Sr ., Mrs . W. W . Crawford
of Cedartown, Georgia, in 1936 contributed part of the information on this family . Additional
information came from other family members who are identified within their portions of the article .
Mrs . Crawford named brothers ofIsaac Sr. as Hazel, Milton, and Thomas . Also named are two
children of Thomas ; but one was a son of James Loveless born 1771, and the other was James' grand-
son by that son . No Milton Loveless of this age category has been located in any records ofthe areas
37 .

3 8 .
where this family resided . However, the name "Milton" was given to grandchildren of John Loveless
and was also used by other branches . It is possible that John's full name was John Milton Loveless
for the poet and that James' full name was James Thomas Loveless .
[Milton Loveless born c.1818 in South Carolina referred to himself in a history of Bartow
County, Georgia, as a "cousin" to the grandchildren of Isaac Sr . In 1880 Milton gave North Carolina
as his father's birthplace, South Carolina, his mother's . His obituary in an Atlanta newspaper
provides only one clue to his origins : Milton joined his first church at age eleven in 1829, the
Mt . Bethel Methodist Church of Laurens, South Carolina .]
The only Loveless deed in Newberry County, South Carolina, identifies the wife of Isaac
Loveless as Mary/Polly (Hughes), sister of Linna who married James Loveless .
Newberry County, 8 Sept 1818 : James Loveless and wife Linna and Isaac Loveless and wife
and Mary relinquished dower rights, signed by their marks and witnessed by Levi Loveless [James'
son] and Joseph McCullough . The dower release was written in Greenville County but recorded in
Newberry County .
On 20 June 1796 Jemimah Hughes, widow of George, was administratrix of his estate . An
appraisal ofhis 150-acre estate was conducted by Nathan Neighbors, Elisha Rhodes, Jacob Rhodes,
and Robert Watson [Box 356 Pack 3] .
On 24 June 1819 John Hatton attested before William Eppe, JP, to the signatures of all parties .
On 8 July 1819, John Caldwell, JP, certified that Susannah Hughes, wife ofJohn ; Jane Casey, wife of
signed with their marks .
Isaac Loveless appears in the 1800 through 1820 Greenville County censuses . The earliest deed
indexed for him is dated 11 Jan 1804, Greenville Bk G p.155 : William Scott sells to Isaac Loveless
128 acres on Mountain Creek of Saluda River . Witnesses : James and John Loveless ; recorded 19
March 1804 . [As Isaac had closer neighbors who could have witnessed this deed conveniently, it is
significant that his witnesses were James and John Loveless .]
Note : The exact description of this parcel matches that in a deed dated 7 Feb 1800, Bk G p .155 :
Jesse Chandler and Charles Estes sell to William Scott of Burke County, North Carolina, 128 acres
adjacent to William Jones, John Mattock, Hendrick Arnold, and Jedediah Estes, being part oftwo
40.
The will of Isaac Loveless was undated but probated 5 March 1827, Greenville County . It
mentions his wife Mary; specifies certain goods previously given to sons Nathan and Joseph and to
his known sons-in-law William Denson and John Shuttlesworth . Also mentioned but unnamed are
"my little children ."
His children are identified by Mrs . Crawford in Ref. 1 with the comment that son Embry/
Hembrey "died young ." He did die relatively young about age thirty-five, but left a widow and
children in Georgia .
The witnesses to Isaac's will were T . J . Hughes, Micajah Stone [future father-in-law ofHembry
Loveless], and William Loveless whose signature matches that on the bounty land application for
James Loveless' son William . No executor was named, that duty falling to John Watson, Ordinary .
In the 1840 Greenville County census Mary H . Loveless is on p .246 near James Loveless and his
sons . The index to the 1850 South Carolina census lists none of Isaac's family . Several children
removed to CassBartow County, Georgia, and to Chattooga County, Georgia . In 1880 four of
Isaac's children in the latter all gave South Carolina as the birthplaces of both Isaac and Polly,
however, some doubt exists regarding the accuracy of Isaac's birthplace . These four all resided in
one household and were small children when Isaac died .
In addition to the Information in Ref. 1, contributed about thirty years ago by descendants,
SAMUEL LOVELACE circa 1775
In the 1800 Spartanburg County, South Carolina, census Samuel is on page 176 near Abraham
Cantrell, second husband of William Lovelace's widow . Samuel is shown age sixteen to twenty-five
with a wife the same age and a son and daughter both under ten . His proximity to Cantrell and the
Lovelace children could indicate that Samuel was another son ofWilliam Lovelace .
He does not appear in a subsequent census there, and no records for him have been located .

42 .
BENJAMIN LOVELACE/LESS circa 1780?
Family tradition cited by Dr . T . B . Lovelace and Prof Marc H . Lovelace mentions their ancestor
Asa Lovelace's brother Benjamin . No birthrate or other information is known except that he allegedly
went to Kentucky . His brothers Asa and Nathan resided in Rutherford County, NC, where Deed
Book 32-33 p.628 reveals that on 7 December 1815 an indenture was made between Benjamin
Loveless and James Shearer, both of Rutherford County, in the amount of one hundred dollars for
which Shearer sold him fifty acres on Webb's Creek . The deed was witnessed by William Green and
Levy Burns ; recorded 25 December 1821 .
It is possible that Benjamin married Mary Green, daughter of Robert whose will dated 5
November 1803, Rutherford County, names his daughter, Mary Lovelace . Green also had a son
William, but he was deceased by 1803 and could not be the same who witnessed the above mentioned
deed .
[Also, the 1820 Rutherford County census indicates that in addition to Asa and Nathan, known
brothers, two other Lovelace men resided there, including a second Asa Lovelace of the same
generation, age 26 to 45, a wife the same bracket, with two sons ten to fifteen and two daughters and
a son all under ten on p.353 . The other unidentified Lovelace there was Ransom on p .356, he and
wife twenty-six to forty-five with five sons and a daughter all under ten . There does not appear to be
any local records for them, and either could have married Robert Green's daughter Mary .]
A recently discovered, highly intriguing situation seems to indicate that Benjamin was indeed
half-brother to James Loveless born 1771 . In 1981 Mrs . Mary E . (Loveless) Carpenter of Anniston,
Alabama, told this author that her grandfather, William T . Loveless, son of Hazel, grandson of
William, and great-grandson of James born 1771, often "visited his cousin, Cortez Lovelace of
Cleburn County, Alabama."
According to Mrs . Jeanelle Walker ofHeflin, Alabama, Cortez P . Lovelace [her grandfather] was
born 1880, a son ofEvan Jackson Lovelace born 1840 . Evan appears in the 1850 Cherokee County,
Georgia census with his parents : James Lovelace born circa 1810, North Carolina, and wife Sarah .
This James Lovelace, age forty in 1850, is unquestionably the same named in the 1851 Pickens
County, South Carolina will of Ira Nicholson which mentions "my daughter Sarah, wife of
James Lovelace of Georgia ."

A descendant of Ira Nicholson, Mrs . Nancy Flesch of Salem, Oregon, identifies Ira's son-in-law
James Lovelace as the "orphan boy" taken in by Henry Henson whose will written in Rabun County,
Georgia and filed at Pickens County, SC, refers to James Lovelace with words of affection .
These references to James Lovelace born circa 1810, NC, appear to mesh as follows . The closest
possible relationship that could have existed between William T . Loveless born 1872, Randolph Co,
Alabama, and his "cousin" Cortez P . Lovelace born 1880, was as third cousins - and then only if their
great-grandfathers had been brothers .
James of Cherokee Co . , Georgia, grandfather of Cortez, was born in NC twenty years after the
ancestral family ofWilliam T . Loveless had relocated in South Carolina . Thus the father of James
Lovelace born circa 1810 had to be one ofthe three Lovelace brothers - Asa, Nathan, or Benjamin ;
and his father, whichever ofthose three, had to be half-brother to James Loveless born 1771 for their
great-grandsons to be related at all .
Asa Lovelace died in 1845/46 and Nathan in 1853 . Neither could have been father of "an
orphan" born in 1810 . Only their brother Benjamin qualifies .
No estate records are found for Benjamin in Rutherford County, and the index to grantors does
not indicate that he ever sold his land there . The County Clerk suggests that perhaps he did sell the
property but that the deed were never recorded . Benjamin may have died there or actually removed
to Kentucky as tradition states, leaving behind at least one son .
Only the children of Asa have been identified . Included with the data applicable to Nathan is a
list of those who could have been sons ofBenjamin, Nathan, or the other Asa or Ransom Lovelace,
all of whom resided in the area .
NATHAN LOVELACE born 1782, Virginia
The index to Rutherford County grantors indicates that Nathan bought land there in 1816 from
Thomas Stone . In the 1850 Cleveland County [formed 1841 from Rutherford] census #324 was
Nathan Lovelace, sixty-six, born in Virginia, farmer . With him was Betsey Lovelace, twenty-one,
born in North Carolina .
Prof Marc Lovelace located gravestones in Cleveland County for Nathan ; born 20 Aug 1782 ;
died 20 Oct 1853 and for his wife, "Feriby," possibly Phebe, who died 24 Oct 1846, age sixty-two .
She was perhaps related to Lewis Green, bondsman at the marriages of several Lovelace men in
Rutherford County .
4 3 .

44 .
In 1820 Nathan and his wife had two daughters under ten, a son under ten, a son ten to fifteen,
and a son 16 or 17 . No estate records have been located . Several marriages in Rutherford/Cleveland
Counties may have been for children of Nathan or for any ofthe other Lovelace men who headed an
1820 household there, with the exception ofAsa born 1785 . Children :
John c.1806 , NC . M . 1 Nov 1831, Rutherford Co ., Elizabeth Wiggins ; John Teal, bond ;
ASA LOVELACE/LESS born 1 August 1785
On 23 July 1806, Rutherford County, North Carolina, he married Susannah Harden . His
bondsman was his stepfather, Abraham Cantrell . In 1810 he resided near his probable half-brothers
in Greenville County, South Carolina, age sixteen to twenty-five with a son under ten and an
unidentified male ten to fifteen . His wife's age is erroneously given as ten to fifteen. Sons located in
1880 named Asa's birthplace as North Carolina .
Rutherford County Deed Book 24-26 p .482 : Abraham Cantrell sold land 1811 to Asa Lovelace
for two hundred dollars . Book 32-33 p.439 : John Jones of Sandy Run sold to Asa Lovelace in 1821
[index only] .
"Soldiers from North Carolina in the War of 1812" includes Asa in the 12th Company detached
from the Second Rutherford County Regiment under Capt . John C . Elliott ; but his widow's attempts
to obtain bounty lands for Asa's service were refused .

On 2 Dec 1853 at Cleveland County [formed from Rutherford] an application for Asa's bounty
lands was filed by his widow . She stated that she was Susannah Harden before her marriage to Asa
"in 1814, she believes ;" that he had volunteered in Rutherford County in a company commanded by
Capt . John C . Elliott in Col . Nathan Horton's regiment . Susannah stated that Asa was gone "some
length of time, was taken sick and was discharged on account of his disability." In July 1854 the
Treasury Department refused her application as the rolls of Capt . Elliott's company did not include
the name of Asa Loveless .
Seven years later on 27 Dec 1860, Susannah, then age seventy, reapplied through an agent,
W . W . Green . At this time she declared that as Susannah Hardin she had married Asa Loveless in
Rutherford County on the 24th day of July 18 -- [smeared] by E -- Dency Dobbins, Baptist Minister ;
that Asa had died at home on the 14th day ofDecember 1845 ; and that she had no family record of
her marriage or births of her children .
The agent, perhaps unforgivably, submitted her application to the Pension Commissioner
omitting every single item of importance relating to Asa's service : date ofenlistment, term of service,
commanding officers' names, etc . A later statement from the agent explains that he had written the
declaration on Susannah's behalf at her home, intending to insert the officer's name when he returned
home and could verify the correct spelling as it appeared in other Records he had prepared for local
men . The agent then stated that Asa's commanding officer was Capt . Garrison .
Numerous documents were submitted in behalf of Susannah, attesting to two weeks of service by
Asa Loveless before he was stricken by illness and allowed to return home "with the assistance of a
friend ." Capt . Lewis, under whom Asa had served before volunteering for the newly formed company
under Capt . Garrison, took an oath in testimony to Asa's service, as did other men from Rutherford
County .
The last document in the file is dated -- [after January] 1861 : Land Claim No . 311,399, Re-
examined : Name of claimant not found on rolls of Capt . Jno . Garretson [sic] North Carolina Militia
for 1814 ; not on rolls of the Regiment .
Susanna stated in her application that Asa had died 14 December 1845 . In Prof Lovelace's
family records the date is 12 Dec 1846, "near Boiling Springs ."
[Family data pertaining to Alvin Lovelace's children was provided by Mrs . Ethelene
Golden of Ada, Oklahoma, 1982 .]
This completes the summaries of the two groups of presumed brothers, all sons of a William
Lovelace who lived in North Carolina in 1771, in Virginia in 1782, and again in North Carolina in
1785 if the birthplace given for Asa Lovelace by his sons was correct . It is logical that William
Lovelace was acquainted with Abraham Cantrell, either in Rowan County, North Carolina, where
Cantrell enlisted, or in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, where Cantrell resided with his second
wife, William Lovelace's widow .
William Lovelace evidently married three times . The first wife, name unknown, was mother of
John, "first son," and of his presumed siblings : William, Hazel, James, Isaac, and perhaps Samuel .
The fact that John and James named their eldest daughters Elizabeth, and that Isaac named one of his
first daughters Elizabeth, may be an indication that this was the name of William's first wife .
The second wife was possibly Margaret Kem, daughter of Leonard Kern of Rowan County,
whose 1780 will names "my daughter Margaret Lovelace ." The given name Margaret does appear
with uncommon frequency among early Lovelace marriage records and families in Rutherford
County .
"Miss Watson of Virginia" was perhaps the third wife and widow . It is known that William's
widow was the stepmother, not the mother, ofhis three youngest sons : Benjamin, Asa, and Nathan. It
is logical that the name of the woman who reared the three orphans would be remembered, and
Abraham Cantrell and the Lovelace widow did have a son, Watson Cantrell .
4 7 .

48.
It must be emphasized that no absolute proof has been established that John Baptist Lovelace's
son William did or did not marry Margery Beall and move to Georgia . At this time it can only be
acknowledged that this is a definite possibility .
Indications are that a William Lovelace ofRowan County, North Carolina, left a widow and
several children and that be was ofthe same generation as those children of John Baptist Lovelace
who resided there .
The one vital piece of evidence which would determine beyond any doubt which William was
the son of John Baptist Lovelace would be the actual signature of John Baptist's son on estate records
for John Baptist, his wife Eleanor, or her second husband, Thomas Robey .
Margery (Beall), wife ofWilliam Lovelace [Jr .?] born 1747, died in Georgia in 1803 . He
married Jannett Hunt in 1809, and the marriage bond bears his signature . By comparing this to a
signature on a Lovelace-Roby estate record it would be known whether or not William who married
Margery Beall and Jannett Hunt was, as has been claimed, the son ofJohn Baptist .
Until that or equally incontrovertible proof can be produced, neither the descendants of one
William nor of the other can claim descent from John Baptist Lovelace born 1712 . This author
intends to continue her pursuit of such proof and is hopeful that others will also in order to ultimately
resolve this . . .
CONTROVERSY IN THE CAROLINAS .
Note .- It is regrettable that the terms "probably," "possibly," and "apparently" must be utilized with
such frequency herein . However, although the author believes certain relationships to have existed,
it is unethical for a genealogist to state as fact any theory, no matter how sound, where solid
documentation is lacking .
