Measures of Bandon’s future
BANDON — In addition to deciding
who will be the next mayor or city councilor,
Bandon voters are being asked to
cast their vote on two ballot measures.
They include:
• Measure 6-145: A non-binding vote
intended to gauge public opinion: “Do
you support an expansion of the Bandon
Marsh National Wildlife Refuge boundaries
by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service?”
• Measure 6-146: Forms a new park
and recreation district, the Bandon
Community Swimming Pool Recreation
District.
had 700 free shots to
received a steady stream of
people. The Southern Coos
The non-binding vote on the proposed
expansion of the Bandon Marsh
Wildlife Refuge was put onto the ballot
by members of the Coos County
Watchdog group, started by Rob Taylor
of Bandon.
Taylor and others, including several
landowners with property within the
proposed expansion area, contend the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intends to
take away valuable farm land against the
wishes of landowners, a contention the
USFWS denies.
Man’s bail reaches halfmillion
for rape charges
By Amy Moss Strong
Bandon Western World
BANDON — A Bandon man faces sex abuse
charges following a report from the Coos County
Sheriff’s Office that he allegedly sexually abused a
young girl.
At about 5:24 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, Coos
County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Bay Area
Hospital in Coos Bay to a report of a possible sex
abuse victim in their emergency room, according to
Sgt. Pat Downing with the Coos County Sheriff’s
Office. The victim, a girl younger than 10 years old.
As of Monday, Steven Ray Perkins, 28, was charged
with first-degree sex abuse, first-degree sodomy and
first-degree rape.
Perkins was transported to the Coos County jail,
where he was booked and lodged and is being held on
$500,000 bail, Downing said.
Downing confirmed that Perkins is the older
brother of Raymond A. Perkins, now 24, who is serving
a 30-year prison sentence for the murder of Dr.
Judith Elman of Bandon in April 2002.
Bandon Marsh and the 2011 restoration
of the Ni-les’tn Unit was the largest tidal
salt marsh restoration project in Oregon
and doubled the acreage of tidal marsh
habitat in the Coquille estuary.
“The USFWS already has more land in
its control than it can adequately care
for,” Taylor said. “Our county is already
economically depressed. This conversion
and loss of productive farm land only
serves to create more economic damage.”
Don Chance, another highly vocal
opponent, has said the USFWS has been
keeping its plans from the public to avoid
outcry.
“There have been more meetings
about the Bandon Marsh expansion outside
of the area than within the area,”
Chance said. “The ultimate goal is for
Fish and Wildlife to take complete control
of it.”
Taylor said although the vote is nonbinding,
a no vote will send a message of
nonsupport.
USFWS Bandon Marsh Manager Dave
Ledig said there is much misinformation
about the proposed expansion.
“That misinformation puts fear into
people’s minds and makes people feel
State cuts
local school
budgets
By Amy Moss Strong
Bandon Western World
BANDON — The Bandon School District will
receive approximately $200,000 less from the state
this year because of the continued downward trend in
enrollment.
Superintendent Diane Buche updated the board at
its recent meeting that the district’s October enrollment
is 717, down from 750 in June of last year, and
compared to 762 in September 2011. But the number
the state uses to calculate its portion of funding for
Bandon is less than 700 because the district’s 50
kindergartners are counted as 25 students due to their
half-time status.
“That’s not good news,” Buche said, “our funding is
seriously impacted.”
Board member Robin Koch asked what other school
districts are doing in the face of declining enrollment.
The North Bend School District is working on a fourday
week, although enrollment is up there, Buche said,
and enrollment is up slightly in the Coquille district.
But enrollment is down in the Coos Bay, Port Orford
and Gold Beach school districts.
“It’s all over,” Buche said. “There still aren’t any
enough family wage jobs to keep families coming to the
area.”
The BHS junior class has the most students, with
74, while the second grade has the least amount of students,
at 46.
Buche also updated the board on the replacement
of the Harbor Lights Middle School roof. The first
round of bids were rejected because the submitted
bids did not meet the project’s specifications. A new
request for proposals has been reopened and the district
hopes to award the project within the next few
weeks.
The HLMS gym leaks during rainy weather, and the
RFP calls for a Duro-last roof that will overlay the current
roof, with the work to be completed by Dec. 31.
The roof repair will be paid for with bond money from
the $1.5 million bond voters approved in May 2011.
The bond also paid for the district track to be resurfaced
and striped and that work is now complete and
the track is open to the public.
Some of the district’s bond money also will be used
to help construct the decking and handrails for the
new playground equipment at Ocean Crest
Midwife defends her practice
By Tyler Richardson
BANDON — A broad smile sweeps across twomonth-old
Pergonis Fisher’s face once she recognizes
Marcene Rebeck’s voice.
Her plump cheeks force her eyes shut as she kicks
her feet in excitement inside a small apartment.
“Oh my God,” Rebeck, 59, says. “Isn’t she the
cutest thing?”
Pergonis is one of over 300 babies Rebeck helped
“catch” — a term she uses to describe her practice of
midwifery because she feels the woman doesn’t get
enough credit.
While Pergonis’ home birth went as routinely as
Rebeck and the Fisher family had hoped, it was the
circumstances after the delivery that were out of the
ordinary for the midwife with more than 30 years
experience.
Just a couple hours after Pergonis was born in a
tub filled with water on her living room floor, a
sleepless Rebeck walked into the Coos County
Courthouse in Coquille, to be arraigned on criminal
negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter
charges.
Former Bandon teen allegedly made tapes of child
Bandon Western World
BANDON — Coos County
District Attorney Paul Frasier said a
Bandon teen charged in a child sex
case was allegedly making personal
video recordings of a juvenile girl.
Frasier said Jesse Cole Housego,
18, was not trying to sell the alleged
tapes and that nobody else is
believed to have taken part in the
filming.
Housego was arrested on Oct. 4,
appeared in court on Oct. 5 and was
re-arraigned Oct. 10. Housego was
indicted by a grand jury on three
counts of using a child in a display
On three separate occasions
between Sept. 26 and Oct. 17 of last
naked and in a sexually-explicit manner,
according to the indictment.
Frasier said the allegations were
CCB# 23563
after Housego had moved to Lane
County.
Housego’s bail is set at $250,000,
Protect your
property
During the night of
Oct. 2 a chain-saw carving
of a pelican about two
feet high, a Christmas
present from my wife,
was taken from the front
yard of our home in
Bandon.
If anyone should happen
to see it, or it is
offered to them for sale,
please contact the
Bandon Police
Department, who have
been notified of the theft.
Apparently there are
people in our area who
will take decorative items
from a person’s yard,
probably for resale, and I
suggest that Bandon
homeowners take appropriate
steps to protect
their property. I wish I
had.
David Mickle
Bandon
Pool would
provide benefits
After reading what all
the city council candidates
want for the city of
Bandon one chord struck
with me. They all want to
see a healthier Bandon —
not only the health of the
people but also of the
business community.
This is great and if they
would all (whomever is
elected) work together for
this goal, I am sure we can
see fruits of their labor in
the future.
It should be noted that
the Bandon Swimming
Pool would be a great
starting point for this
very same goal. Not only
would it mean important
temporary construction
jobs — bringing in money
to local business via labor
buying food, coffee and
other daily needs, but
there could be a provision
put in the final construction
contract that stated
that all construction
materials (where possible)
had to be purchased
from local vendors. I
recently finished a tour of
duty in a place where it
was deemed best for the
community that as much
as possible local content
in any work would take
precedence. Why can’t
Bandon do the same?
The long-term health
benefits from a swimming
pool can not be measured
in monetary terms alone
but in the quality of life
that use of the pool could
bring our young people
and our elderly.
Swimming is just a great
way to stay fit. This has
been proven in countless
studies done all over the
world. If you look at the
results of the summer
Olympics you can see that
swimming has become a
major part of sports.
When I was a kid the reason
that Mark Spitz won
so many medals is not
only that he was a great
athlete but also because
most people went into
track and field. That has
changed. Now swimming
is recognized as not only a
great sport, but people
who swim tend to be in
good, healthy condition
for life. You can swim as
long as you live. Mark
Spitz even thought about
making a run at a spot on
the team well into his 50s!
Don't disregard a ben-
efit until you have seen
that the benefit doesn't
work. If our young people
have a way of channeling
their energy into swimming
instead of smoking,
drinking and negative
behavior, then be it
school, sports, or just
going and hanging out at
the pool, isn’t this better
than riding around in a
car having time for this
negative behavior?
I would just like people
to think about how they
react to the swimming
pool the same way they
react to the vote for city
officials: Vote for the person
that you see helping
Bandon keep our citizens
healthy, happy and at
work.
A vote for the pool is a
sure way of doing exactly
that.
Chlorine is a
carcinogen
I would like to add a
comment to the writer
who mentioned exposure
to toxic chlorine in an
indoor swimming pool:
According to the Merk
Manual and the OSHA 40
SARA 120 Hazardous
Waste Handbook, chlorine
is a carcinogen, and
emergency procedures
should be taken when
exposed via swallowing,
inhaling or through the
skin.
Surely there are
enough toxic chemicals in
the air we breathe, the
foods we eat and the
drugs we take, without
immersing ourselves in
them via a swimming
pool. I wouldn't expose
myself as a senior citizen
to this chemical, let alone
expose any children to it.
I have a chlorine filter in
my shower head, because
the chemical is absorbed
through the skin and the
steam increases the
amount inhaled, just like
a closed, heated pool
room would.
Vote no on
pool measure
A pool for Bandon?
What about security for
Bandon?
Meth use is up; marijuana
is throughout our
schools; crime, domestic
violence, theft and drug
use is in the papers on a
regular basis and throw in
a murder or two.
I think a pool is a nice
idea from good-hearted
people that mean well,
but this should come
down the road. I don’t get
“In journalism, there has always been a tension
between getting it first and getting it right.”
how anyone could turn
down taxes/bond measures,
etc. to support our
hard-working police
department who are
deserving of our support
and then support
increased taxes and bond
measures to support a
pool, a luxury item.
That is criminal to me!
We need to get our priorities
in order. Safety for
Bandon should come
first! Then a pool, if you
must.
No on
proposed
expansion
— Ellen Goodman, syndicated columnist, 1993
The U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service recently
released the
C omprehensive
Conservation Plan for the
Bandon Marsh Refuge.
Simultaneously with the
release of the CCP, the
service mailed out the
National Refuge Planning
Update No. 3 in
September, which was
what most residents
received.
In this current issue of
the update, the original
Bandon marsh expansion
of 4,500 acres is noticeably
missing in
Alternative C. That was
one of three alternative
plans for the marsh and
the expansion was in that
third choice. On the last
page of the update The
service has an email and a
mailing address for public
comment on this new
alternative, which is due
by Oct. 22. However, the
service is asking the public
to comment on what is
in the new planning
update without mentioning
their plans in the CCP.
This is deceptive on the
part of The USFWS.
The entire expansion
of the Bandon marsh is in
chapter 1 on page 22 of the
CCP. The services has
relabeled the planned
expansion, but make no
mistake, it is the same
plan as the original
Alternative C. The
planned expansion is now
Vote for
Democrats
America is in a fight for
its democratic life. It is
critically important that
you vote for Democrats in
the November election to:
• Protect your right to
vote. Republican governors
and Legislatures in 15
states are attempting to
restrict the constitutional
voting rights of of the
poor, the elderly and
minorities.
• Protect and improve
Social Security and
Medicare. Under a
Republican administration,
these would be privatized
and vouchered,
making the funds available
to hedge funds and
private insurance companies.
The dollars that you
pay into these funds and
receive when you retire
would no longer be protected
for you.
• Protect women’s
reproductive rights, right
down to the birth control
pill.
• Protect your right to
unionize. Unions brought
the 40 hour work week,
worker safety measures
and a living wage.
• Protect and improve
the commons: The roads,
bridges, schools that are
built by our collective
taxes, that we all use and
cannot afford to build by
ourselves.
Don’t let your guard
down just because you
live in Oregon, which still
protects these things.
American rights must
apply to all Americans no
matter where they live.
When Democrats are in
charge, everyone has
rights. When Republicans
are in charge, rights are
limited to the few, a group
to which you may not
belong.
Elect Democrats this
November and keep
America available to all.
Your vote matters: Mail it.
How many times has she
signs if she’s lived here for
any length of time and she
pay your fine and slow
Our police officers and
state troopers have a
importantly, if you want
to speed you have to pay
attention to your surroundings
and be ready to
pay the fiddler if you get
In other business, the
• Heard from Trent
Hatfield’s class on the
forestry challenge field trip
that six BHS students
attended. A story on the
trip will be published in a
subsequent issue.
• Heard from Darcy
Grahek on a proposal for a
district greenhouse that
would provide learning
opportunities for students.
Grahek wrote a grant and
the project was tentatively
awarded $30,000 from the
Wild Rivers Coast
Alliance. The board discussed
the idea and Grahek
mentioned other grant
possibilities. She will bring
more information to the
board at a future meeting.
• Approved the hiring of
A board work session is
set for 6:30 p.m. Monday,
Oct. 22, in the district
cafeteria.
should not be “interfered”
with by modern medicine
and unfamiliar hospital
staff. She said giving birth
is one of the safest things a
woman can do, and she
encourages her clients to
work with their bodies and
minds to get their babies
out rather than relying on
hospitals.
“A majority of people
have a fear of giving birth,”
she said. “Your body is
made to give birth.
Hospitals cause so much to
go wrong because they
interfere with the birth
process.”
It’s that fear, Rebeck
said, that drives expectant
parents to hospitals and
away from the privacy of
their own home. She
laughs at the notion that
midwifery is for “hippies”
only, or that there is
underlying religious beliefs
attached to the process.
Her philosophy is a
simple science that has
proven successful since
she began training in 1982
after a “huge revelation”
during her own home
birth.
She constantly visits
the mother and the baby
before each birth, monitoring
their heartbeats,
providing vitamins to tone
the mother’s uterus and
educating the family on
what to expect. After the
birth she lets the mother
and baby bond for around
20 minutes while she
that a line on a map is a
threat when there is no
threat,” he said.
Ledig would like people
would call him or Roy
Lowe, project leader for
the Oregon Coast
National Wildlife Refuge
Complex to find out
what’s fact or fiction.
“I understand people’s
fear,” Lowe said. “But we
have no authority on what
people can or can’t do on
their land. By drawing the
line, it means I can go out
and ask people if they are
interested in selling and if
they say no, that’s the end
of our involvement.”
The current plan
USFWS is seeking comments
on does not
include the proposed
expansion. That has been
separated from the plan to
allow for greater public
involvement.
The public will have a
chance to comment on
the proposed expansion
and the USFWS will conduct
socioeconomic and
other analyses to evaluate
expansion options within
the study area. The
USFWS will only purchase
land from willing
sellers at fair market value
and the entire process
could take years, if it happens
at all.
“Ninety-five percent
of historic tidal marshland
in the Coquille estuary
has been lost to diking
and draining,” Lowe said.
“The most recent reclamation
doubled the
amount of tidal marsh
habitat, even though it
was a low percentage of
reclamation.”
Ledig said there are
long-term benefits to
helping fish and wildlife.
“It does take lands out
of agricultural production,
but it puts it into fish
and wildlife production
and that also has economic
benefits, including
Dealing with
Back on Highway 101,
Rebeck, dressed in a colorful
becomes a little somber as
she talks about continuing
to practice after losing the
first newborn in her career.
Her voice trails off as she
talks about the fractured
relationship with the
changes the subject to the
seven new clients she says
she will help give birth
“I told all my ladies, ‘It
she has accepted them as
part of her job.
“She always said that if
you are going to be dealing
with life, you are inevitably
going to be dealing with
death,” she said. “But it
never prepares you.”
A short while after
turning off the highway,
Rebeck pulls into a long
gravel driveway in a
secluded part of Arizona
Beach. Two-year-old
Sterling Voshall, whom
Rebeck helped deliver,
runs into her arms and
leads her by the hand into
his house.
Sitting on the couch is
Colleen Ellis and her 6week-old
boy, Malachite
Voshall. Rebeck helped
deliver Malachite in Ellis’
living room, and she is
back to do her final checkup.
Rebeck picks up the
child and begins speaking
to him in a baby’s voice as
she checks his heartbeat.
Ellis, who said she always
wanted a home birth,
chose Rebeck as her midwife
because she helped
deliver her husband,
Woods Voshall, 25 years
ago.
“If I wouldn’t have
found Marcene, I would
have done it alone,” Ellis
said of giving birth. “It
would have been scary
without her. I couldn’t
imagine doing it without
fishing and recreation and
the related services,”
Ledig said.
But he encourages
Bandon Swimming
Pool District
The formation of a
swimming pool recreation
district would provide
a tax base to build
and maintain a pool in
Bandon. The taxing district
would cost property
owners 48 cents per
$1,000 of assessed valuation.
For example, if a
home’s real market value
is assessed at $100,000,
that property owner
would pay $48 a year to
fund the pool district.
The pool has been on
Bandon’s wish list for
her.”
DA has concerns
Rebeck said the support
from the community has
been overwhelming since
she was charged in July,
and the thought of not
continuing to practice
never crossed her mind.
“I still totally believe in
what I’m doing,” she said.
Frasier agreed that a
majority of the births
Rebeck has handled have
turned out well, but he said
his office still has reservations
with her practicing.
“We have our concerns,”
he said. “She probably
does fairly well in
most cases. It’s the cases
where stuff goes to hell in a
hand basket that we are
having problems with.”
Frasier declined to go
into details of the case, but
he did say that he has
found “more than two”
home births involving
Rebeck where serious
problems occurred. Frasier
asked Coos County Circuit
Court Judge Richard
Barron to order Rebeck to
stop practicing when she
was arraigned Aug. 2, but
Barron declined to do So.
Frasier said there is
nothing he can legally do to
make Rebeck stop practicing
because she is unlicensed.
Oregon and Utah
are the only states that
don’t require midwives to
carry a license to practice,
Frasier said.
many years. In 2005, resident
Mike Sterling
formed a nonprofit group
to fund construction of a
pool through donations
and grants. The group has
raised $400,000 so far
and the city of Bandon
has offered $600,000 in
urban renewal money to
help build the pool.
The pool committee is
leasing a piece of land on
11th Street from the
Bandon School District
for $1 a year. Cost to build
the pool is estimated at $3
million, but the design
can be changed and nothing
is “set in stone,”
Sterling said.
Opponents, such as
resident Rose Romano,
said she likes the idea of a
pool, but doesn’t believe
it’s something Bandon
can afford. Romano has
researched other cities
across the U.S. with public
pools and found that
some of them struggle
financially to keep the
facilities open.
“A pool is not a vital
service,” Romano said,
adding she knows people
in Bandon who can barely
pay their bills.
“How can they pay ‘a
few cents more’ for a
pool?” she asked.
A proposed annual
budget has been prepared
by board member Dave
Reed based on actual
costs by cities of similar
size that have public
swimming pools. The
projected amount that
would be raised each year
by the taxing district
would pay not only to
build the pool, but also
would more than adequately
maintain it as
well.
“If we don’t build the
pool now, we might lose
the opportunities we now
have to use the school
district’s land and the
city’s offer of urban
renewal money,” Sterling
said.
Although this is the first
case of its kind in the state
that he knows of, Frasier
said he feels confident he
has strong evidence that
Rebeck’s “substandard”
care caused the newborn’s
death.
“I have not received any
evidence from the defense
that would cause me to
believe these charges are
inappropriate or the opinions
of the experts are
incorrect,” he said.
Mothers who trusted
Rebeck with their babies’
lives continue to be outraged
over the charges as
Rebeck’s change of plea
hearing nears Oct. 22.
“It’s pretty shocking
what is going on,” said
Sandra Anderson, who had
two children delivered by
Rebeck. “She cares about
people. You definitely want
to battle when somebody is
attacking her.”
Rebeck said she doesn’t
think about the possibility
of spending the majority of
what’s left of her life in
prison. Instead, she said
she wants to focus on
delivering healthy babies
and being thankful that
she is still able to practice.
“A majority of people
have a fear of birth, just like
they have a fear of death,”
she said. “I have not let fear
change me. In life there is
death.”
Bandon nets best
volleyball victory
Western World
For one night,
Bandon’s volleyball team
put everything together.
The Tigers dominated
visiting Myrtle Point last
week, beating the Bobcats
25-19, 25-18, 25-14.
It was just their second
league win, but was a
great sign for the future.
“It was more than
amazing,” said Bandon
coach Courtney Freitag,
though she added that it
wasn’t a big surprise for
the coaching staff.
“We knew all along
that the girls had this in
them,” Freitag said.
With the Tigers
already assured of not
reaching the postseason,
since Glide has already
clinched the lone Class
3A playoff berth for the
Sunset Conference, any
win to build confidence
for the future is a good
thing. Bandon returns
nearly the entire team
next season.
Against the Bobcats,
Emily Ramos had 30 digs
and 20 good passes in
serve receive, Freitag
said. Cheyenne Young
had seven aces and 21
assists, Haley Freitag had
12 kills and four aces and
Raelyn Freitag had 17
digs, eight kills and seven
aces.
The Tigers had great
serving in the win.
“We only had three
service errors,” Courtney
Freitag said. “For us,
that’s a slam dunk.”
The other thing the
Tigers did was play consistently
the entire
match.
“They kept the
momentum,” Freitag
said. “Even when Myrtle
Point went on a run, they
would not get their heads
down.
“Everybody played
great all the way around.”
The consistency was
missing during many of
the team’s earlier matches.
Freitag and assistant
Mariah Vierck have seen
the potential during the
season.
“At any given time, we
are the worst and the best
team in the league,”
Freitag said. “We could
have beat anybody
tonight. I really believe
that.”
The Tigers weren’t
able to maintain that
momentum Tuesday
night, falling to leagueleading
Reedsport 25-19,
25-20, 25-10.
Raelyn Freitag had five
kills, 10 digs, four blocks
and two aces. Ramos had
17 digs and Alanna Smith
had three aces.
The Tigers visit Glide
today and finish the season
with matches at
Coquille on Tuesday and
at home against Gold
Beach next Thursday.
Cross country team
wins another race
Western World
With just over a week
to go before the district
meet, Bandon’s girls had
another impressive cross
country win over the
weekend.
The Tigers dominated
the Myrtle Point
Invitational, scoring 19
points and having four of
the first eight finishers.
Brookings-Harbor was a
distant second with 54
points.
Freshman Sarah Cutler
won the 5,000-meter
race in 20 minutes and 52
seconds. Fellow freshman
Aida Santoro was second
in 21:33. Hailey Iverson
was sixth and Weston
Jennings, another freshman,
was eighth. Claire
Ledig rounded out the
team scoring with a 12thplace
finish.
The district meet is
Oct. 27 at Crow, and none
of the district’s other
teams have challenged
the Tigers in any of the
meets this season.
While Bandon’s girls
appear a safe bet to qualify
for state, the boys
appear to be in a tight race
including several different
schools.
At Myrtle Point,
Bandon finished second
behind Brookings-
Harbor, but was in a tight
battle with Myrtle Point
and Pacific, two of the
district’s other teams.
The top two teams and
top five individuals from
the district meet advance
to the Class 3A-2A-1A
state meet at Lane
Community College.
Tyler Wiprud led the
Tigers with a 12th-place
finish. Christian Lathan
was 13th, Colton Jennings
16th, Daniel Undell 19th
and Drayton Jennings
21st.
In addition to Myrtle
Point and Pacific, the district
race could be close
between Crow, Yoncalla
and Oakland.
Bandon’s last event
before the district meet is
the noncompetitive
Brownie Run at Florence
today.
Trophy trout are still in local lakes
Local lakes: Cathy
from Ringo’s Lakeside
Marina told us that rainbow
trout fishing out at
Tenmile Lakes has
remained good. One
angler reported catching
a 20-inch rainbow from
the county boat dock. She
also told me largemouth
bass fishing has been
slow, but anlgers targeting
yellow perch have
been catching some nice
black crappie up to 12
inches in length. Tenmile
has had a die off of their
crappie population in
recent years. As the rainy
season approaches look
for coho salmon to eventually
enter the Tenmile
watershed which includes
Siltcoos and Tahkenitch
lakes.
Recently stocked
Empire Lakes has been
the hot spot for shore
anglers looking to catch a
trophy trout. The 2pound
trout have been
biting nightcrawlers
fished off the bottom and
little Cleos in nickle green
or nickle blue colors.
COQUILLE 484 N. CENTRAL
541-396-3145
Local rivers: Scott
from the Chetco Outdoor
Store told me that the
Chinook have been moving
into the estuary of the
Chetco in good umbers in
recent days. Anglers
trolling the bay have been
catching fish on herring
or anchovies. Shore-
based anglers are
hooking fish
from the Finger
Jetty on
Kastmasters and
Cleos.
Chinook fishing
continues to
be pretty good in
the Rogue Bay as
Indian Creek
Hatchery fish
start to return.
Coho fishing in
the bay has been
good, but most of
the fish are wild, and must
be released. Boat anglers
upriver are having success
side drifting roe for
Chinook. Casting spinners
or fly fishing can be good
this time of year as long as
river levels are low.
Braves spoil Tigers’ homecoming
By John Gunther
Bandon Western World
BANDON — Bandon’s
football team missed
another chance for a win
last Friday, falling to visiting
Reedsport 46-22 on
homecoming.
The Tigers had their
best scoring night of the
season, but were undone
by a couple of late
turnovers.
“We had a couple big
plays go against us,” said
Bandon coach Silia
Polamalu.
The Tigers scored first,
then rallied from a twoscore
deficit to tie the
game in the third quarter
before Reedsport scored
the last three touchdowns.
Bandon had an efficient
drive on the game’s
opening possession.
Quarterback Shawn
Peters and fullback
Chance Garrett provided
tough running yards and
Bandon took advantage of
a pair of penalties by the
Braves before Tim Hunter
burst outside 14 yards for
a touchdown and Troy
McClurg added the extra
point kick.
Reedsport quickly
responded with a touchdown,
but the Tigers
stopped the extra point
run.
The Braves scored two
more touchdowns before
Bandon had a 74-yard
touchdown drive in the
closing minutes of the
first half. Thomas and
Garrett both had a few big
runs and Garrett bulled
his way across the goal
line from 4 yards out with
just a few seconds left in
the half.
Bandon then forced a
turnover on Reedsport’s
second play of the third
quarter, with Hunter
recovering a fumble.
This time, Peters
scored the touchdown on
a quarterback keeper
from 14 yards out. He
added the conversion run
to knot the score at 22.
But Bandon’s final
three possessions ended
with a fumble and two
interceptions.
Polamalu liked a lot of
what he saw from his
team, which is mostly
filled with varsity newcomers.
“We went without a
huddle for the first time,
and tried to loosen them
up a bit,” he said of a nohuddle
offense the Tigers
unveiled during the game.
“We were able to get some
success offensively. That
was good to see.”
Garrett rushed for 113
yards and Peters added 65
yards carrying the ball for
Bandon, despite a
Reedsport defense
stacked to stop Bandon’s
option attack.
“It was good to have
some success against a
five-man front,”
Polamalu said.
“Chance ran extremely
hard. And Shawn, he’s
Big boot
Troy McClurg kicks the point after touchdown for the
Tigers Friday night during their game against the
visiting Reedsport Braves. Bandon fell 46-22.
getting better and better.”
Unfortunately for the
Tigers, as much as the
offense improved, the
Tigers wore down on
defense against
Reedsport’s physical
attack.
Matt Rohde and Wade
Hutchinson both ran for
more than 100 yards for
the Braves.
Bandon remains winless
on the season, and
the schedule only gets
rain should allow fall
Chinook to enter the Elk
and Sixes rivers soon.
Fall Chinook fishing on
the lower Coquille River
was good last week.
The salmon were on the
bite as the low pressure
system moved on to the
South Coast. Coho fishing
is starting to pick
up with the best
fishing from U.S.
Highway 101
Bridge to Rocky
Point. As of last
week, 14.9 percent
of the 1,500
wild coho quota
had been met.
Bank anglers
have been landing
some nice
Chinook up
Seven Mile
Slough on live
sand shrimp and roe under
a bobber.
Fishing for coho
salmon has picked up this
past week in Coos Bay.
Wild coho are being
caught from the Coos Bay
bar all the way up into
Coos River. The hot spots
tougher, with home
games against Coquille
on Friday and Glide next
week before the season
ends at Gold Beach on
Nov. 2.
Polamalu did say playing
Reedsport was good
preparation for Coquille
and Gold Beach, which
both employ power running
attacks.
“They’re going to give
us the same type of
game,” he said.
have been near the Empire
boat ramp and SOMAR. As
of last week, 34 percent of
the 1200 wild coho quota
had been met.
Area shellfish: As of
Monday morning, crabbers
on Bandon’s Weber’s
Pier were still catching
limits of Dungeness crab.
Early mornings have been
best regardless of the
tides.
Boaters are still catching
easy limits of
Dungeness crab in
Bandon and Coos Bay.
