CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bill Clinton takes center stage at the
Democratic National Convention today as President Barack
Obama’s nomination is placed before a party hoping that the
last president to preside over sustained growth can help propel
him to re-election in a sputtering economy.
The former president’s speech will be a high point in a
checkered relationship between two men who sparred, sometimes
sharply, in the 2008 primaries, when Clinton was supporting
wife Hillary’s campaign for the nomination.
If day two of the Democrats’ convention was all about grabbing
some of Clinton’s luster, opening day was designed to
portray Obama as someone who understands the problems of
ordinary people.
Michelle Obama played those cards with force in a speech
declaring that after four years as president, her husband is still
the man who drove a rust-bucket on early dates, rescued a coffee
table from the trash and knows the struggles of everyday
Americans because he lived them in full.
“I have seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change
who you are, it reveals who you are,” the first lady said to lusty
cheers Tuesday night in a deeply personal, yet unmistakably
political testimonial.

charging Henson for his alleged role in
a double-fatality shooting Sunday
near Bandon.

Henson told Coos County Circuit

Gillespie ordered him to pay attention.

day camp was supposed to
hold a camp at the North
Bend First United
Methodist Church this
summer.
But the church burned
down before it began.
Heather Lilienthal,
camp leader, was in
Coquille hosting another
Grub Camp the day the
church caught fire.
“Our first thought was,
obviously, we would have
to find a different location
for the camp,” said Lilienthal,
an Oregon State University
Extension agent.
“If we couldn’t find a
different place, we would
have to cancel the camp.”

School Board may vote tonight to
ratify its proposed contract with
teachers at a special board meeting.
The teachers union and school
board have arbitrated over the teachers’
2011-12 and 2012-13 contract for
jump suit, looked at his wife and
assured her he still loved her.
“I loved you more than anything,”
he said in court. “But at least it’s
done.”
Wife, two men shot
Frasier alleges Henson shot his wife,
Vallena R. Tuell, in the forearm during
an altercation where he also shot
George Micheaux III and Milton C.
Leach. Micheaux and Leach both died
as a result of the shooting, although it
is unclear how many times each man
was shot.
Autopsies on both men are scheduled
for Thursday.
Frasier said Micheaux, who was
married to Tuell’s mother Ruth S.
Micheaux; Leach, who was Ruth
Micheaux’s ex-husband; Henson; and

The five lived together, along with
small children, on a property in Myrtle
Creek.

lived in a house; Leach lived in a

Lilienthal did find a new
location for the camp, the
North Bend Fire Department.
Then, with the permission
from campers’
parents, she changed the
curriculum a bit.
Instead of growing food,
the kids made a dozen
planter boxes for the
church.
“The kids loved it,”
Lilienthal said. She used a
completed planter box as
an example. The campers
figured out how to make
the rest. At the end of the
three-day camp, the children
had built a dozen 2by-8-foot
cedar boxes that
were 1-foot deep.

say a brown pickup towing a
boat trailer may have started
the natural-cover fire about
five miles west of Elkton on
Monday afternoon.
The fire erupted on the
river side of state Highway
38, then quickly jumped the
road and spread uphill,
blocking holiday traffic for

started by a brake on the boat
trailer, according to the
Douglas Forest Protective
Association, which responded
to the fire call around 3:30

near Allegany

A forest fire that burned Tuesday night near Nesika
Park east of Allegany was contained this morning.
The fire started around 7 p.m. near Highway 241, said
John Flannigan, a spokesman for the Coos Forest
Protective Association, which responded to the blaze.
The fire’s cause is under investigation. Fire crews
should remain on the scene until about 6 p.m. today to
mop up hot spots.
The highway is open, but Flannigan warns drivers to
be cautious in the area, and to limit unnecessary trips.
Firefighters are working from the road. Also, the area
where the fire burned is steep, presenting an increased
danger of falling debris.
Flannigan said the fire spread to aboiut two acres on
private land before it was contained. No one was injured,
and no homes were threatened.
The association brought a bulldozer, a helicopter, three
engines, a tender and 22 firefighters to battle the blaze.

in the Civil War while
studying his own family’s
history when he learned he
had ancestors who had
fought on both sides.
“My family is a microcosm
of the Civil War,” he
said.
“We had one person who
went AWOL, one who died
of disease, one who got
wounded and one who got
captured,” he said.
“The more I read the
more interested I became.”
The same thing seems to
happen to students who
take Hartman’s class. He
originally designed a oneterm
class, but students
encouraged him to offer
additional classes. Now,
Hartman offers three terms
of the class with different
content. Students can take
the classes in any order.
No credit is offered for
spread uphill. The fire was
contained inside about 1 1 ⁄2
acres, the association said.
Crews remained on scene
through the night, mopping
up hot spots and checking
containment lines.
Firefighters will remain at
the scene today to ensure the
fire does not restart.

Travel southbound on U.S. Highway 101 through Coos Bay was slowed this morning by a semi-trailer that
detached from its cab. The gravel-hauling truck was turning onto 101 from Ingersoll Avenue around 8 a.m.
when the trailer came off, blocking the two right lanes of traffic, according to police officers directing traffic
at the scene. The Oregon Department of Transportation brought in equipment to remove the trailer.

I’m a native Northwesterner
who had the misfortune to be born
in Chicago.
Washington state and, now,
Oregon are the places where Dana,
my wife, and I feel truly at home.
Both of us were born, reared and
educated in the Midwest. The last
time we were east of the Mississippi
was in 2004. The visit filled us
only with an urgency to leave.
One of our favorite things about
this neck of the woods (some neck,
some woods!) is the genuine
friendliness of its people. Mind
you, Midwesterners aren’t noted
for their hostility to strangers, but
Northwesterners are nicer still.
They’re certainly nicer than the
folks in Texas, which prides itself
on its hospitality. We spent the
longest 15 years of our lives in the

“He didn’t just see a tangle of plastic and
tubes; he saw our beautiful little girl, and he
was clearly overcome with compassion for
her,” Pam Finlayson told the Republican
National Convention in Tampa on Thursday
night. She was talking about the man of
the hour, Mitt Romney, and the love he
demonstrated as a lay bishop in the Mormon
Church. Her daughter was born three
and a half months early, with grave medical
problems.
“Our daughter Kate grew into an amazing
girl of faith and love,” Finlayson said, to
audible relief and applause from the audience,
as a photo of a girl in
an angel costume
appeared in the background.

room, however, as she
continued: “Complications

acles and struggle, she
passed away just a year
and a half ago.”
As Ann Romney
explained it, her relation-
ship with her husband cannot be expressed
through the usual “storybook marriage”
trope. “In the storybooks I read, there were
never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in
a house with five boys screaming at once.
And those storybooks never seemed to have
chapters called ‘M.S.’ or ‘breast cancer.’”
“What Mitt Romney and I have is a real
marriage,” she declared.
Former senator and onetime Romney
rival Rick Santorum elaborated on the
virtues of just such an institution prior to
Ann Romney’s speech.
“Many Americans don’t succeed
because the family that should be there to
guide them, and serve as the first rung on
the ladder of success, isn’t there or is badly
broken,” he observed.
Before making the case that Romney’s
policies could bolster marriage, Santorum
said: “The fact is that marriage is disappearing
in places where government
dependency is highest. Most single mothers
do heroic work and an amazing job raising
their children, but if America is going to
succeed, we must stop the assault on marriage
and the family.”
It’s a theme that Romney has been running
with, and one that I’ve personally
heard him talking about in one way or
another since I first started paying attention
to him in 2005. In the most important
speech of his political life thus far, in
Tampa, he said: “My mom and dad gave
their kids the greatest gift of all — the gift of
unconditional love. They cared deeply
about who we would be, and much less
about what we would do.”
“Unconditional love,” he reflected, “is a
gift that Ann and I have tried to pass on to
our sons and now to our grandchildren. All
the laws and legislation in the world will
never heal this world like the loving hearts
and arms of mothers and fathers.”
Love is a many-splendored thing. And it
can even reach across political parties. New
York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president
of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,
prayed at the RNC and will do so at the
Democratic National Convention as well.
He will also break bread with both candidates
at a charity dinner on Oct. 18, hoping
to bring light “in a time when divisiveness
and almost a hyperbolic partisanship seem
to have overtaken the American political
process,” he tells me.
“If I speak in human and angelic tongues
but do not have love, I am a resounding
gong or a clashing cymbal,” St. Paul wrote in
I Corinthians 13. “And if I have the gift of
prophecy and comprehend all mysteries
and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to
move mountains but do not have love, I am
nothing. If I give away everything I own,
and if I hand my body over so that I may
boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
This is true in life and in politics: Without
love, any victory is fleeting.

I’m certain that a community’s
natural surroundings shape its
character, just as environments
shape other species. The Northwest
has some spectacular scenery
that’s more powerful than just
pretty.
When my parents traveled from
Illinois to visit us in Olympia,

for state senate
Scott Roberts doesn’t know
me, but I know about him.
Besides a couple visits to his
office, I have followed his campaigns
over the past couple
years. In Scott, I see someone
who is willing to go against the
political grain to advocate for our
interests here on the coast.
He is concerned for the folks
here who need good, well-paying
jobs. He knows those jobs
won’t come if every new opportunity
is tied up in endless red
tape and regulatory hairballs. He
understands that our needs here
are somewhat unique, and that
what is good for the metropolitan
areas is not necessarily good
for us. He is willing to step up to
the plate and make sure our
voices are heard, then work hard

Writing this, I
remember putting
similar words
onto paper as a
columnist in
Everett, Wash.,
where I had landed
with eyes agog
at Puget Sound, the Olympic
Mountains and the Cascades. In
many ways back in the 1970s,
Everett resembled Coos Bay/North
Bend: a scruffy mill town reeling
from a timber recession and finding
few things to like about itself.
And, like our Bay Area, Everett
compared itself to richer or larger
cities and found itself sadly lacking.
When I started telling Everett
folks — right out loud in print and
everything — how I loved the
place, their first reaction was that I
was a few cones short of a hemlock.
But I kept up the message,
and eventually some readers began
to believe.
Turn, turn, turn
I feel much the same about Coos
Bay: If you think it’s ugly, just turn
90 degrees and view beauty. If you
think it’s down and out, remember
Public Forum
represent my views. When he
was principal at Marshfield, I
had a few discussions with Arnie
regarding one of my foster children,
and wasn’t particularly
happy with the outcome. When
my own kids reached high school
age, we opted to send them to
North Bend High School rather
than Marshfield. I can’t say it
was all because of Arnie, but he
WAS the principal there at the
time. ‘Nuff said.
I will be voting for Scott
Roberts for state senator in
November. I encourage you to
join me in electing someone who
will listen, then represent OUR
interests in Salem.

Columnist lied
about Medicare
Can’t understand why The
World would publish a piece
about purported lies that in itself
was a lie. I’m referring to the
anti-Romney hit piece by Gene
Lyons in the Aug. 29 issue, titled
“Romney’s bare-faced lie”
regarding cuts to Medicare to
fund Obamacare.
According to the CBO under
Obamacare, there will be reductions
of more than $716 billion to
Medicare over the next 10 years.
It is projected that seniors will be
paying about $3,700 more per
year within the next five years
due to reductions of $156 billion
to Medicare Advantage plans,
and the Medicare trustees also
project that the cuts will drive
more than 4 million seniors out
of these plans between 2012 and
2018. The chief actuary of
Medicare says that due to cuts to
hospitals and nursing homes
under Obamacare, at least onequarter
of them will drop out of
the Medicare program by 2030.
So where’s the lie?
Medicare is a health-care
program designated for people
65 years or older, and Obamacare
is for the rest of the people. So
Lyon is lying when he disputes
Romney’s claim that taking
about three-quarters of a trillion
dollars from Medicare won’t
hurt seniors. So now, money that
had been designated for health
care for seniors will be spent on
younger people, and seniors will
just have to tough it out the best
they can with the reductions to
Medicare. Talk about throwing
Granny off a cliff!
If Lyon wants to honestly
write about a politician’s lies,
how about mentioning Obama’s
promise, months before Obamacare
was passed, to post any
new proposed legislation on the
Internet for several days before a
vote? It was passed behind
closed doors at midnight on
Christmas Eve 2009, by a bunch
of Democrat representatives
including our very own Peter
DeFazio, and then by the Democrat
Senate on March 21, 2010.
For the first two years of
Obama’s presidency, the
Democrats were in total control
of Congress, so Republicans for
the most part weren’t allowed to
participate in the legislative
process during that time. The
sad part of this whole fiasco was
that no one even read the 2,700page
document, and Nancy
Pelosi, speaker of the house,
cavalierly said, “We have to pass
the bill so that you can find out
what is in it.”

What exactly is Measure 6-
143, this Coos County Home
Rule Charter? It’s a constitution
creating an enforceable contract
between citizens and elected
officials. Nine Oregon counties
have charters. Charters can be
amended, not by the commissioners,
but by a vote of the people.
In late 2010, several troublesome
issues began to arise: an
unelected county administrator,
urban renewal tax expansion,
Bandon Marsh expansion and
the Coos Bay Wagon Road timber
management. Some citizens
wondered what they could do.
This “Voice of the Voters” charter
started there.
With this charter, there will
be no county administrator
without an amendment by the
people. County urban renewal
tax decisions will go to a vote of

county assets will go to the people.
Five commissioners will be
full-time, fully accountable,
elected at large, paid for by eliminating
credit cards, reducing
human resources salary, bulk
purchasing, and required maintenance
savings.
Commissioners will vote only
at regularly scheduled Coquille
board meetings. Citizen comments
will be allowed at all
meetings. The county will have
open published contract bids
and accountability for quality
and compliance. Major decisions
on Wagon Road timber,
county water rights, and county
forestlands will be decided by
the voters. And, following the
abandonment and dismantling
of the unmaintained Beaver Hill
incinerators, preventative maintenance
will now include dedicated
funds.
To qualify for the ballot, this
Charter needed 1,521 signatures.
It garnered 2,701 or almost 80
percent more than needed, and
in only two months.
A county administrator?
Why have an expensive,
unelected, golden-parachuted
firewall between you and your
elected commissioners?
Also, this charter requires no
special elections. The state sets
regular election days in March,
May, September, and November
every year, when major issues
can be brought before the voters.
Additionally, longevity raises
for county employees at 5, 10,
and 20 years have existed for
years. The charter simply adds
year 15 as an additional anniversary.
If providing free document
copies to the taxpaying citizens
is going to cost “tens to hundreds
of thousands,” then where
in the county budget are these
currently collected amounts,
while the county is still charging
50 cents per copy?
This charter's name is “Voice
of the Voters.” It is not only its
name but also its philosophy. It
was written from the view of the
voters and it returns local county
government to that old-fashioned
American value of government
“of the people....”

seem to have a lot of insight
about Jade. Because she was
raised by a mother who was
involved in one abusive relationship
after another, she
may feel that unless there is
pain and drama, that what
she’s experiencing is boring
and not really “love.” Until

are flawed, and is willing to
get help to straighten out her
thinking, her pattern will

Ore.’s newest town deadlocked over what’s next
DAMASCUS (AP) — A
few years ago, residents of
the rural Damascus area in
Clackamas County got
together to incorporate as a
city, Oregon’s newest and
first in two decades.
But a split between those
who want to develop land
and those who want to keep
a rural life has been hard to
bridge.
City commissioners have
asked voters to vote in
November on whether they
favor pulling about half the
city of about 10,000 people
out of the regional planning
process, a move that could
lead to returning that part
of the city to rural status.

miss and think of him every
day.
Arthur is survived by his
wife, Betty Heart of South
1960, in Oakridge, to Ronald
and Shirley Tommila. He
passed away Aug. 18 in
Eugene, after a brief illness.
Alan worked for
International Paper’s
Logging Division, in
Gardiner, for 17 years. He
then moved to Coos Bay and
worked for Baycrest Village.
In 2008, he moved to Eugene
and worked for Lane County
Parks; a move that he had
wanted to do for some time.
Alan enjoyed Eugene’s many
celebrations, concerts, bike
trails and, of course, the
Oregon Ducks, among other
things.
the U.S. Army in 1958.
During his military service,
he achieved the rank of sergeant
and received an honorable
discharge after a service
related injury.
On Dec. 2, 1958, he married
Gloria S. Linn. Together
they had three children and
raised one foster child. After
moving to the Coos Bay area,
Bobby worked for a period of
time for Roseburg Lumber
Company, later attending
Southwestern Oregon
Community College where
he received his associate’s
degree in machinery. After
school, he began working at
Koontz machine shop, later
starting his own businesses,
Bob’s Building Maintenance
and Coast Cities Chem-Dry
Carpet and Upholstery
Cleaning. He later retired
and sold the businesses.
Bobby was the happiest
when he was working with
his hands. He loved working
in his shop, building rocking
horses and special things for
1949 in Beebe, Ark. In
September of 1950, they
moved their family to Coos
Bay. Their third child,
Barbara, born May 8, 1951,
and fourth child, Ronnie,
born March 8, 1953, were
both born in North Bend.
Oma and Dexter were married
over 47 years when
Dexter died March 21, 1994.
During their marriage, Oma
worked as a waitress, a secretary
for Dunn Realty, a
sales clerk in the yardage
department at The Hub
Department Store and a grocery
clerk at Fred Meyer.
After being widowed for six
years, Oma married Paul
William McDonald Feb. 14,
2000, in Coos Bay. Paul died
July 1, 2009 after nine years
of marriage.
Oma has been a member
of the Salvation Army since
1957. During this time, she
served as Sunday school
teacher, ladies group leader,
rest home ministries leader
as well as head lay leader for
the church. While her children
were in school, she
served as Parent-Teacher
Association president for
eight years at Michigan
Avenue School. She worked
on the Election Board for
several years, responsible for
ballot boxes and ballot
counting. Oma also worked
for the Red Cross during
blood drives and was a volunteer
at Bay Area Hospital.
Transportation has pulled a
federal grant Damascus was
using for work on its staterequired
transportation
system, citing passage of a
local measure that requires
voter approval of major
plans and ordinances.
A major landowner, 89year-old
Lowell Patton, has
filed a lawsuit that claims
the city’s development
deadlock has cost him $66
million.
Patton operates a rock
products business and has
held land, some of it with
sweeping views of Mount
Hood, for nearly four
decades, waiting for the
right time to build. He

toward his motorbike and
swerved. For a split second,
he thought he had dodged
the truck. Then his passenger
screamed.
Singh saw the bloody flesh
hanging loose from his
brother’s knee and hit full
throttle. It would take five
hours for his brother to get
the care he needed, in a journey
that highlighted the
deadly gaps in India’s emergency
care system.
Singh didn’t bother calling
the emergency helpline
on the unlit Uttar Pradesh
highway because he knew
help would probably come
late, and that it would probably
be a police officer rather
than a medical professional
who responded.
His brother would end up
needing an ambulance anyway,
because doctors at the
nearest hospital, a half-hour
away in Bulandshahr, said he
needed surgery that was too
complex for them to perform.
He had to make the
three-hour trip to New Delhi
in a small van with a stretcher,
an empty oxygen tank,
worn-out shock absorbers
that magnified each bump —
and no medic.

A man visiting a gem exhibition
in Sri Lanka’s capital
swallowed a 1.5 carat diamond
in front of the owner
and was taken by police to a
hospital, where an X-ray
showed the $13,000 stone
inside him.

behaving suspiciously at his
stalls and when he reached

life. A 2006 report in the
Indian Journal of Surgery
found that more than 80
percent of Indians don’t get
care within that “golden
hour.”
This delay hasn’t really
improved in the last six
years, said Dr. Mahesh Joshi,
head of emergency medicine
at Apollo, India’s largest network
of private hospitals.
“Even in big cities like Mumbai,
it is virtually impossible
for a heart or trauma patient
to reach any doctor within
the first hour,” he said.
Some private emergency
response networks are
quicker, but they bring in less
than 7 percent of the 4,000odd
patients that reach
Apollo’s emergency rooms
across the country every day,
closer to the suspect, the
man suddenly swallowed the
diamond at his hand before
Suresh alerted police at the
exhibition venue.
Chou Wan, a 32-year-old
from China, is in custody
pending further investigation,
police spokesman Ajith
Rohana said.
An X-ray proved the diamond
was inside Chou’s
body, said hospital director
Dr. Anil Jasinghe at Colombo
National, where the suspect
was taken for the test.

People don’t even know
how to call for help. The
emergency number could be
108 or 102 or 100, depending
on which state you are in. A
survey at Delhi’s top trauma
center showed that 90 percent
didn’t know they could

Local police do help accident
victims reach hospitals,
but their response times
vary. In most cities, patrol
cars don’t have room for a
stretcher, and victims can be
injured during transport.
The police in Delhi are the
quickest, said Tewari, and
they bring in most of the
cases that make it to the
city’s top trauma center.
On one weeknight in July,
the crew of patrol car Eagle
Six had just unpacked dinner
when the operator radioed
about a motorcycle accident.
Four minutes of siren blaring
and tire screeching later,
they were trying to resuscitate
a badly bruised stranger
in their patrol car. By the
time they reached the hospital,
their patient was disoriented
but conscious.
“Still, we could use better
training,” said Constable
Ajeet Singh.

“Barack knows the American
Dream because he’s
lived it,” the first lady told
the Democratic National
Convention on Tuesday in
an address intended to reassure
voters that her husband
shares their values — hard
work, perseverance and
optimism — while also
drawing a contrast between
him and Mitt Romney.
Mrs. Obama never mentioned
the president’s
Republican challenger, who
grew up in a world of privilege
and wealth.
But the point was clear as
she wove a tapestry of their
early years together, when
money was tight and times
were tough, when they were
“so in love, and so in debt.”
She reminisced about the
man who now occupies the
Oval Office pulling his
favorite coffee table out of
the trash and wearing dress
shoes that were half a size
too small. And she told stories
about a president who
still takes time to eat dinner
with his daughters nearly
every night, answering their
questions about the news
and strategizing about middle-school
friendships.
With a mix of personal
anecdotes and policy talk,
Mrs. Obama’s speech was
her most political yet.
“Today, after so many
struggles and triumphs and
moments that have tested
my husband in ways I never
could have imagined, I have
seen firsthand that being
president doesn’t change
who you are — it reveals who
you are,” she said.
To that end, the first lady
painted a portrait of a leader
who knows the struggles of
everyday Americans, who
listens to them as president
and who pushes an agenda
with their interests in mind.

night, hunched over his

nor Obama fits the bill of
the average, working-class
American struggling with
credit card debt and mortgage
payments. Both are
millionaires who live a privileged

to convince Americans
that they’re best suited to
run an economy hampered
by sluggish growth and high
unemployment. Polls show
Romney leading on who voters
say would best to manage
the economy; but Obama
has the advantage on who
voters believe understands
their economic challenges
better.

Pentagon says ex-SEAL
book contains secrets
WASHINGTON (AP) — A
former Navy SEAL’s insider
account of the raid that killed
Osama bin Laden contains
classified information, the
Pentagon said Tuesday, and
the admiral who heads the
Naval Special Warfare
Command said details in the
book may provide enemies
with dangerous insight into
secretive U.S. operations.
Rear Adm. Sean Pybus
told his force Tuesday that
“hawking details about a
mission” and selling other
information about SEAL
training and operations puts
the force and their families at
risk.
“For an elite force that
should be humble and disciplined
for life, we are certainly
not appearing to be
so,” Pybus wrote in a letter to
the roughly 8,000 troops
under his command. “We
owe our chain of command
much better than this.”
The letter was obtained
by The Associated Press.
At the Pentagon, press
secretary George Little said
that an official review of the
book, “No Easy Day,” determined
that it reveals what he
called “sensitive and classified”
information. He was
not more specific but said
the author was required to
submit the book to the
Pentagon before publication
for a formal review of potential
disclosures of such
information.
“When you have special
operations units that per-
form these missions, there
are tactics, techniques, and
procedures, not to mention
human life, that are in play,”
Little said. “And it is the
height of irresponsibility not
to have this kind of material
checked for the possible disclosure
of classified information.”
He told reporters during a
briefing that the Pentagon is
still reviewing what legal
options should be taken
against the author.
If the Pentagon determines
the bin Laden book
does disclose classified
secrets, the government
could consider bringing federal
criminal charges against
Bissonnette. The potential
charges and penalties would
depend largely on what type
of secrets were disclosed.
Pybus, in his letter, was
more direct, saying that,
“We must immediately
reconsider how we properly
influence our people in and
out of uniform NOT to seek
inappropriate monetary,
political, or celebrity profit
from their service” with the
SEALS.
“We all have much to gain
or lose,” he said. “In the
weeks ahead, we will be taking
actions to meet this challenge,
and I appreciate your
leadership and support of
our community in this
effort.”

National debt hits $16T

But first, I should say that
many commonly used medicines
may actually be a cause
of incontinence. I have a list of
such medicines on my website.
If you’re on any of these,
talk to your doctor about
whether they might be
responsible in your case.
As for treatments other
than medicines that might
help, several pads and other
absorbent products are
designed for the male anatomy.
Drip shields (with light
protection) or guards (that
absorb more) with waterproof
backings slip over the head of
the penis. They can be kept in
place with any tight-fitting
briefs. For heavier incontinence,
you can wear absorbent
inserts, shaped to fit men,
inside your own underwear or

special mesh briefs.
If you have constant leakage,
devices that collect rather
than absorb urine can help. A
condom catheter (or “Texas
catheter”) is a soft
sheath made of silicone
or latex. It fits
over the penis like a
regular condom. It
attaches to a drain
tube leading to a urine
collection bag. The
bag is strapped to your
leg, underneath your
pants and out of sight.
Another option is
a clamp placed
around the base of the
penis. The device is
designed as an inflatable
ring or a foamlined
frame. The clamp is
tightened just enough to prevent
urine from leaking. Every
few hours, you loosen the
clamp to urinate.
You may also be troubled
by dribbling urine after the
main stream has stopped. To
avoid this, try to “milk out”
the last few drops of urine.
Using your fingertips, start an
inch behind your scrotum and
gently press upward. Keep
applying pressure as you move
your fingers toward the base of
the penis under the scrotum.
Repeat. This maneuver should
move the pooled urine into the
penis, where you can shake out
the last few drops.

Ongoing incontinence can
irritate your skin. After each
leak, clean the area with lukewarm
water or a gentle soap or
cleanser. Then apply diaper
rash treatment, or a lotion or
cream made for incontinence.
Lost toys inspire ingenuity
My older son was a huge fan
of Legos. And Hot Wheels —
my boys loved their Hot
Wheels. They’re grown and
gone, but I still remember conducting
search parties — with
flashlight in hand — for lost
treasures under the couch. I
don’t know if pool noodles
even existed 30 years ago, but
now that I have a grandson
with treasures of his own, I’m
going to install
some under my
couch.

so I placed a pool
noodle under the
couch. It sits
under the skirt, so
it isn’t visible, but
it buffers the
perimeter so that toys don’t get

CORVALLIS — Coach Mike Riley jokes that
Oregon State has been in the longest training
camp ever.
The Beavers, who started camp back on Aug.
6, didn’t play their opener Saturday against
Nicholls State because Hurricane Isaac swept
through the Colonels’ Thibodaux, La., campus.
Officials from Oregon State and Nicholls
State jointly decided last Wednesday night that
it was in the best interests of the students to
postpone the game, possibly until the first
weekend in December.
The result is that Oregon State will finally
open its season this Saturday at home against
No. 13 Wisconsin.
It is the first time a Big Ten team has ventured
to Corvallis since 1971, when the Beavers
defeated Iowa 33-19.
“I’ve been saying it’s as big a nonconference
game that Oregon State has ever hosted,” Riley
said. “I think it’s awesome.”
After the Nicholls State game was called off
last week, Riley gave the Beavers a day off
before getting back to work. He thought there
might be a letdown among the players because
they had already started their preparations for
the Colonels.
“We tried to look at the silver lining: We get
in a little more work, we might get a couple of
guys healthy, we practice the routine of a game
week,” Riley said. “Hopefully all those things
are good. I think you find out the most about
your team when you play a game, which we
didn’t get to do. But we’ve tried to spin the positives
from this and get ready for a big game.”
Last year, the Beavers traveled to Madison
and fell 35-0 to the Badgers. The loss was the
second of a four-game losing streak to start the
season for Oregon State. The Beavers finished
the season a disappointing 3-9, and out of the
postseason for the second straight season.
Wisconsin went 11-3 last season and lost to
Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
The Badgers opened this season with a 26-
21 victory at home over FCS power Northern
Iowa.
Coach Bret Bielema said he was pleased to
get the win but said there were things the
Badgers needed to improve before facing the
Beavers.
“I know we’re going to see a much improved
football team going out there this year than we
faced last year at Camp Randall,” Bielema said.
“And obviously anytime you travel for the first
time it’s got its own set of issues. Tuesday is the
first day of classes as well. So a lot of big firsts
coming this week for this team to take on.”
There was some gamesmanship going on this
week when Bielema decided not to give Oregon
State the Northern Iowa game film because the
Beavers had no game film to offer in return.
Riley was able to get ahold of the film anyway,
although he kept his source anonymous.
Saturday’s game will be the Beavers’ latest
season opener since a Sept. 9, 1989, game
against Stanford.
As for the Nicholls State game, officials
from both schools are still mulling options for
rescheduling. Because the teams have different
off dates, the game could be scheduled for the
weekend of Dec. 1, but there could be a conflict
if the Colonels reach the FCS playoffs or the
Beavers go to the Pac-12 championship. Pac-12
officials also will be involved in rescheduling
the game.
On Tuesday, Oregon State announced that
ticket holders could either hold on to them for
the rescheduled game, or exchange them for
tickets to a Pac-12 home game based on availability.
Oregon State had not missed a game since
2001 when a home game against Montana State
was canceled because of the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks.
Pac-12 can make a statement this week

PHOENIX — The Pac-12 had a
long opening week, stretching
from four games Thursday night
to Arizona’s frenetic game with
Toledo that went into the wee
hours of Sunday morning.
There were a couple of surprising
losses, some tougher-thanexpected
wins, but mostly the
week was filled with lopsided victories
against overmatched opponents.
This week figures to get a lot
tougher for the conference with
ranked teams like Wisconsin,
Nebraska and Oklahoma State on
the schedule.
The most daunting game
would go to Washington. Coming
off a win against San Diego State,
the Huskies get a huge test in the
bayou when they face No. 3 LSU
on Saturday.
“They are a very good football
team,” Washington coach Steve
Sarkisian said.
Oregon State is facing a pretty
good one, too.
The Beavers had their game
against Nicholls State postponed
due to Hurricane Isaac, giving
them extra time to prepare for No.
13 Wisconsin.
They may need it.
Oregon State was overrun 35-0
in Madison last year and this season
the Badgers are the favorites to
win a third straight Big Ten title

Marshfield’s volleyball team
opened the new season with a win
at Cascade Christian on Tuesday.
The Pirates swept the
Challengers 25-10, 25-16, 25-14.
“We played well,” said
Marshfield coach Tammie
Montiel. “I thought we did a good
job of playing our speed of game. I
was impressed with it being our
first match out to be that composed.”
Brea Mosieur had eight kills to
lead Marshfield’s attack. Hannah
Olson, Peyton Babb and Emily
Moe each had five kills, while
Olson had three blocks, Babb had
eight digs and Moe had four
blocks. Setter Lauren McGowne
had 21 assists.
The Pirates played shorthanded,
Gabby Bryant, one of two
sophomores on the team, was left
home with a high fever, and
another player missed the match
with an injury, Montiel said.
Bryant already was a fill-in at
her position, libero, for Alicia
Hatzel, who injured her knee late
in the spring and will miss the
entire season.
“So we played seven players,”
Montiel said.
Marshfield hosts Churchill in a
nonleague match Friday. The
evening will include just a varsity
match, starting at 5 p.m. so the
players and fans can get to North
Bend for the Civil War football
game, which starts at 7 p.m.
Pacific tops
Powers to
open league
THE WORLD
Pacific’s volleyball team topped
visiting Powers in the Skyline
League opener for both teams on
Tuesday.
The Pirates swept the Cruisers,
25-16, 25-20, 25-17.
“This was fun,” said new
Pacific coach Ashley Moore.
Pacific matched its win total
from last year — the Pirates beat
Powers in their season finale.
The Pirates got contributions
from every player in the lineup,
Moore said.
“All of them played well,” she
said. “Every single girl hustled
their butt off, and they’re working
as a team.”
Kaylee Ells had three aces in a
row in the third game. Heather
Hardcastle didn’t miss a serve the
entire evening. Caitlin Happeny
had two aces. Miranda MacFarlane
had a solid night as setter. And
Hannah Fortune, a first-year player,
was all over the court making
plays, Moore said.
Pacific had a couple of advantages
for the match.
The Pirates played a match last
week against Gold Beach, and
though Pacific lost in three sets, it
was a competitive battle and the
girls told Moore the team played
better together than it did all last
fall, Moore said.
Powers, meanwhile, has not
been able to practice in its own
gym for more than a week while
the floor was repaired. Instead, the
Cruisers spent the week practicing
on a grass court coach Heather
Shorb set up.
“It was kind of fun,” Shorb said
of practicing outside. “I’ll be glad
to be on our court tomorrow, and I
know the girls will, too.”
Shorb said she was pleased
with her team’s effort Tuesday.
“We played very hard,” she
said. “It was really good to finally
play a game after having only three
practices in a gym.”
Rebecca Standley had six aces,
five kills and two blocks for the
Cruisers. Sadie Blanton had two
kills and eight digs, while Jessie
Hunter had four kills and four
blocks.
“We know what we need to
work on now,” Shorb said. “We will
improve.”
Pacific plays tonight in the
Reedsport jamboree and both
teams will be back in league play
on Friday, with Powers visiting
Camas Valley and Pacific visiting
Umpqua Valley Christian.

fees, consultants and public
relations firms hired to help
deal with the Jerry Sandusky
child sex abuse scandal have
reached nearly $17 million.
The university said it has
spent almost $16.8 million
through June 30.
Nearly $10 million of that
went to seven firms for what
Penn State calls internal
investigation and crisis communications.
Nearly $4 million
went for university legal
services and defense.
The university is also fac-
ing lawsuits from Sandusky’s
accusers while the NCAA

Kenseth announces move to Joe Gibbs Racing
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.
(AP) — Matt Kenseth opened
this season with a second
victory in the Daytona 500,
and it didn’t take him long to
establish himself as a legitimate
championship contender.
But before the midpoint
of the season, Kenseth had
decided he no longer wanted
to drive for Roush Fenway
Racing. On Tuesday, nearly
two months after RFR said
Kenseth was leaving, the
driver finally confirmed he’s
moving to Joe Gibbs Racing
at the end of the season.
“Surprise,” he said as he
entered a JGR news conference,
a dry quip at one of the
worst kept secrets in
NASCAR.
Kenseth was deliberately
vague, though, as to why he’s
leaving RFR after 13 full Cup
seasons. He’s never driven for
anyone else at NASCAR’s
highest level, and paired with
Jack Roush won 22 races, a
pair of Daytona 500s and the
2003 championship.
“I knew it would not only
be a good fit, but it’s about
winning races and winning
championships and you want
to put yourself in a position
to be competitive going forward,”
Kenseth said. “I felt
like this was it.”
But he was winning races
and he was competitive at
Roush, where the 40-year-old
Kenseth is considered one of
NASCAR’s elite drivers.
Pressed as to what JGR offered,
Kenseth knew he wasn’t going
to give a clear answer.
“There’s just a lot of different
things that go into
that. It’s about 2013 and
beyond,” Kenseth said. “I felt
like and I feel like (Gibbs) was
the right place for me. I know
without a doubt at all it’s the
right place for me to be.”

should have overtaken
the club king with

for the heart nine. When

who held the jack. But at
least he would have had a
chance to get it right.
