Washington state and, now, Oregon are the places where Dana, my wife, and I feel truly at home. Both of us were born, reared and educated in the Midwest. The last time we were east of the Mississippi was in 2004. The visit filled us only with an urgency to leave. One of our favorite things about this neck of the woods (some neck, some woods!) is the genuine friendliness of its people. Mind you, Midwesterners aren’t noted for their hostility to strangers, but Northwesterners are nicer still. They’re certainly nicer than the folks in Texas, which prides itself on its hospitality. We spent the longest 15 years of our lives in the Love: A must in any platform “He didn’t just see a tangle of plastic and tubes; he saw our beautiful little girl, and he was clearly overcome with compassion for her,” Pam Finlayson told the Republican National Convention in Tampa on Thursday night. She was talking about the man of the hour, Mitt Romney, and the love he demonstrated as a lay bishop in the Mormon Church. Her daughter was born three and a half months early, with grave medical problems. “Our daughter Kate grew into an amazing girl of faith and love,” Finlayson said, to audible relief and applause from the audience, as a photo of a girl in an angel costume appeared in the background. Shock filled the room, however, as she continued: “Complications of her birth remained with her, and after 26 years of both mir- KATHRYN LOPEZ Columnist acles and struggle, she passed away just a year and a half ago.” As Ann Romney explained it, her relationship with her husband cannot be expressed through the usual “storybook marriage” trope. “In the storybooks I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once. And those storybooks never seemed to have chapters called ‘M.S.’ or ‘breast cancer.’” “What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage,” she declared. Former senator and onetime Romney rival Rick Santorum elaborated on the virtues of just such an institution prior to Ann Romney’s speech. “Many Americans don’t succeed because the family that should be there to guide them, and serve as the first rung on the ladder of success, isn’t there or is badly broken,” he observed. Before making the case that Romney’s policies could bolster marriage, Santorum said: “The fact is that marriage is disappearing in places where government dependency is highest. Most single mothers do heroic work and an amazing job raising their children, but if America is going to succeed, we must stop the assault on marriage and the family.” It’s a theme that Romney has been running with, and one that I’ve personally heard him talking about in one way or another since I first started paying attention to him in 2005. In the most important speech of his political life thus far, in Tampa, he said: “My mom and dad gave their kids the greatest gift of all — the gift of unconditional love. They cared deeply about who we would be, and much less about what we would do.” “Unconditional love,” he reflected, “is a gift that Ann and I have tried to pass on to our sons and now to our grandchildren. All the laws and legislation in the world will never heal this world like the loving hearts and arms of mothers and fathers.” Love is a many-splendored thing. And it can even reach across political parties. New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, prayed at the RNC and will do so at the Democratic National Convention as well. He will also break bread with both candidates at a charity dinner on Oct. 18, hoping to bring light “in a time when divisiveness and almost a hyperbolic partisanship seem to have overtaken the American political process,” he tells me. “If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal,” St. Paul wrote in I Corinthians 13. “And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.” This is true in life and in politics: Without love, any victory is fleeting. There, a supermarket slogan proclaimed, “Texas friendly spoken here,” as if it were a different dialect. Well, we never heard it. If we did, it didn’t sound sincere. “Jimmy, the trees!” I’m certain that a community’s natural surroundings shape its character, just as environments shape other species. The Northwest has some spectacular scenery that’s more powerful than just pretty. When my parents traveled from Illinois to visit us in Olympia, Wash., my mother’s awestruck reaction was, “The trees! Besides a couple visits to his office, I have followed his campaigns over the past couple years. In Scott, I see someone who is willing to go against the political grain to advocate for our interests here on the coast. He is concerned for the folks here who need good, well-paying jobs. He knows those jobs won’t come if every new opportunity is tied up in endless red tape and regulatory hairballs. He understands that our needs here are somewhat unique, and that what is good for the metropolitan areas is not necessarily good for us. Mill towns Writing this, I remember putting similar words onto paper as a columnist in Everett, Wash., where I had landed with eyes agog at Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains and the Cascades. In many ways back in the 1970s, Everett resembled Coos Bay/North Bend: a scruffy mill town reeling from a timber recession and finding few things to like about itself. And, like our Bay Area, Everett compared itself to richer or larger cities and found itself sadly lacking. When I started telling Everett folks — right out loud in print and everything — how I loved the place, their first reaction was that I was a few cones short of a hemlock. But I kept up the message, and eventually some readers began to believe. Turn, turn, turn I feel much the same about Coos Bay: If you think it’s ugly, just turn 90 degrees and view beauty. When he was principal at Marshfield, I had a few discussions with Arnie regarding one of my foster children, and wasn’t particularly happy with the outcome. When my own kids reached high school age, we opted to send them to North Bend High School rather than Marshfield. Ron Kutch Lakeside Columnist lied about Medicare Can’t understand why The World would publish a piece about purported lies that in itself was a lie. I’m referring to the anti-Romney hit piece by Gene Lyons in the Aug. 29 issue, titled “Romney’s bare-faced lie” regarding cuts to Medicare to fund Obamacare. According to the CBO under Obamacare, there will be reductions of more than $716 billion to Medicare over the next 10 years. It is projected that seniors will be paying about $3,700 more per year within the next five years due to reductions of $156 billion to Medicare Advantage plans, and the Medicare trustees also project that the cuts will drive more than 4 million seniors out of these plans between 2012 and 2018. The chief actuary of Medicare says that due to cuts to hospitals and nursing homes under Obamacare, at least onequarter of them will drop out of the Medicare program by 2030. So where’s the lie? Medicare is a health-care program designated for people 65 years or older, and Obamacare is for the rest of the people. So Lyon is lying when he disputes Romney’s claim that taking about three-quarters of a trillion dollars from Medicare won’t hurt seniors. So now, money that had been designated for health care for seniors will be spent on younger people, and seniors will just have to tough it out the best they can with the reductions to Medicare. Talk about throwing Granny off a cliff! If Lyon wants to honestly write about a politician’s lies, how about mentioning Obama’s promise, months before Obamacare was passed, to post any new proposed legislation on the Internet for several days before a vote? It was passed behind closed doors at midnight on Christmas Eve 2009, by a bunch of Democrat representatives including our very own Peter DeFazio, and then by the Democrat Senate on March 21, 2010. For the first two years of Obama’s presidency, the Democrats were in total control of Congress, so Republicans for the most part weren’t allowed to participate in the legislative process during that time. The sad part of this whole fiasco was that no one even read the 2,700page document, and Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house, cavalierly said, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.” Keith Comstock Myrtle Point Know what you’re voting for What exactly is Measure 6- 143, this Coos County Home Rule Charter? It’s a constitution creating an enforceable contract between citizens and elected officials. Nine Oregon counties have charters. Charters can be amended, not by the commissioners, but by a vote of the people. In late 2010, several troublesome issues began to arise: an unelected county administrator, urban renewal tax expansion, Bandon Marsh expansion and the Coos Bay Wagon Road timber management. Some citizens wondered what they could do. This “Voice of the Voters” charter started there. With this charter, there will be no county administrator without an amendment by the people. Five commissioners will be full-time, fully accountable, elected at large, paid for by eliminating credit cards, reducing human resources salary, bulk purchasing, and required maintenance savings. Commissioners will vote only at regularly scheduled Coquille board meetings. Citizen comments will be allowed at all meetings. The county will have open published contract bids and accountability for quality and compliance. Major decisions on Wagon Road timber, county water rights, and county forestlands will be decided by the voters. And, following the abandonment and dismantling of the unmaintained Beaver Hill incinerators, preventative maintenance will now include dedicated funds. To qualify for the ballot, this Charter needed 1,521 signatures. It garnered 2,701 or almost 80 percent more than needed, and in only two months. A county administrator? Why have an expensive, unelected, golden-parachuted firewall between you and your elected commissioners? Also, this charter requires no special elections. The state sets regular election days in March, May, September, and November every year, when major issues can be brought before the voters. Additionally, longevity raises for county employees at 5, 10, and 20 years have existed for years. The charter simply adds year 15 as an additional anniversary. If providing free document copies to the taxpaying citizens is going to cost “tens to hundreds of thousands,” then where in the county budget are these currently collected amounts, while the county is still charging 50 cents per copy? This charter's name is “Voice of the Voters.” It is not only its name but also its philosophy. He wants to cuddle with both of us whenever we sit on the couch and gets really upset when we don’t want to. He’s my biological father, but I have known him only for a year because he left my mom when she was pregnant with me. Now he wants to play “dad” when I already have had a dad all my life. (Mom was married for 11 years to another man.) I’m 14. He yells and swears all the time and takes things away from us if we don’t do what he wants. DEAR ABBY: I am romantically attracted to a girl, “Jade.” We have known each other ever since we were in diapers. She’s bubbly, vivacious and beautiful. We flirted with puppy love about 10 years ago, but it never went beyond writing love letters and ended quickly. It was so disappointingly brief that I have never regarded it as a true relationship. I consider her my first love. Jade goes through boyfriends like a chainsmoker goes through cigarettes. It seems as if every time I ask her, “So, how is your current boyfriend?” that she has a new one. Her mother is the same way, truth be told, and never found a good father figure for Jade. The men her mother dated were abusive. Consequently, Jade isn’t the best judge of men, either. My parents have suggested that she may view me as a friend because I’m the only decent guy in her life, and she’s afraid we wouldn’t be friends if our romantic relationship ended. I want to tell her that I’d like to date her the next time her current relationship ends. At the same time, I want her to know I’d rather have her as a friend than nothing at all. Thanks to the wonder of social media, I will know when her next relationship ends. Should I wait till then? Because she was raised by a mother who was involved in one abusive relationship after another, she may feel that unless there is pain and drama, that what she’s experiencing is boring and not really “love.” Until she realizes that the criteria she’s using in choosing men are flawed, and is willing to get help to straighten out her thinking, her pattern will continue to repeat itself. As you hover over your keyboard waiting for news of her next romantic failure, I suggest that rather than “pounce,” you keep her as a friend until she’s ready for a mature relationship. But a split between those who want to develop land and those who want to keep a rural life has been hard to bridge. City commissioners have asked voters to vote in November on whether they favor pulling about half the city of about 10,000 people out of the regional planning process, a move that could lead to returning that part of the city to rural status. Oma was born Oct. 8, 1929, in El Paso, Ark. to Harlow and Lillie Bell (Ramsey) Foreman. She passed away Aug. 31, 2012, in Coos Bay. Oma lived in El Paso until she married Dexter J.W. Barringer Oct. 19, 1946, in El Paso. Her first son, Jimmie, was born Aug. 1, 1947 in Conway, Ark. and later died in 1961. Their next child, Peggy, was born June 15, Some in the city are talking about doing away with Damascus’ incorporated status entirely. Kitty O’Meara, who helped develop the draft comprehensive plan rejected by voters in 2010, said the deadlock over development has proved too difficult to overcome. “We’ve just been circling the drain for a long, long time,” she said. State law requires cities to have comprehensive plans so that they can zone property. The vote against the plan was 65-35. Arthur was a hard worker, good provider, husband, father and friend. Those who he left behind who knew and loved him will miss and think of him every day. Arthur is survived by his wife, Betty Heart of South 1960, in Oakridge, to Ronald and Shirley Tommila. He passed away Aug. 18 in Eugene, after a brief illness. Alan worked for International Paper’s Logging Division, in Gardiner, for 17 years. He then moved to Coos Bay and worked for Baycrest Village. In 2008, he moved to Eugene and worked for Lane County Parks; a move that he had wanted to do for some time. Alan enjoyed Eugene’s many celebrations, concerts, bike trails and, of course, the Oregon Ducks, among other things. the U.S. Army in 1958. During his military service, he achieved the rank of sergeant and received an honorable discharge after a service related injury. On Dec. 2, 1958, he married Gloria S. Linn. Together they had three children and raised one foster child. After moving to the Coos Bay area, Bobby worked for a period of time for Roseburg Lumber Company, later attending Southwestern Oregon Community College where he received his associate’s degree in machinery. After school, he began working at Koontz machine shop, later starting his own businesses, Bob’s Building Maintenance and Coast Cities Chem-Dry Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning. He later retired and sold the businesses. Bobby was the happiest when he was working with his hands. He loved working in his shop, building rocking horses and special things for 1949 in Beebe, Ark. In September of 1950, they moved their family to Coos Bay. Their third child, Barbara, born May 8, 1951, and fourth child, Ronnie, born March 8, 1953, were both born in North Bend. Oma and Dexter were married over 47 years when Dexter died March 21, 1994. During their marriage, Oma worked as a waitress, a secretary for Dunn Realty, a sales clerk in the yardage department at The Hub Department Store and a grocery clerk at Fred Meyer. After being widowed for six years, Oma married Paul William McDonald Feb. 14, 2000, in Coos Bay. Paul died July 1, 2009 after nine years of marriage. Oma has been a member of the Salvation Army since 1957. During this time, she served as Sunday school teacher, ladies group leader, rest home ministries leader as well as head lay leader for the church. While her children were in school, she served as Parent-Teacher Association president for eight years at Michigan Avenue School. She worked on the Election Board for several years, responsible for ballot boxes and ballot counting. Oma also worked for the Red Cross during blood drives and was a volunteer at Bay Area Hospital. Transportation has pulled a federal grant Damascus was using for work on its staterequired transportation system, citing passage of a local measure that requires voter approval of major plans and ordinances. A major landowner, 89year-old Lowell Patton, has filed a lawsuit that claims the city’s development deadlock has cost him $66 million. Patton operates a rock products business and has held land, some of it with sweeping views of Mount Hood, for nearly four decades, waiting for the right time to build. The proposal for southeast Portland’s Kelly Butte is opposed by Commissioner Amanda Fritz who says it’s too expensive and unnecessary to comply with drinking water regulations. Fritz says it would be cheaper to cover Portland’s open reservoirs with heavy plastic covers. The Oregonian reports Water Bureau officials and Commissioners Rany Leonard and Dan Saltzman say plastic covers are a bad idea because they are temporary and don’t address the need to upgrade reservoirs to withstand earthquakes. 3 Great Pyrenees dogs fatally shot PRINEVILLE (AP) — A central Oregon man says three Great Pyrenees dogs used to protect sheep that graze in rugged terrain have been fatally shot east of Prineville while they were on their owner’s property. KTVZ-TV reports that investigators say the people STATE D I G E S T involved in the shooting have been identified and the Crook County sheriff’s office has been in contact with the dog’s owner. The district attorney’s office reportedly is reviewing the sheriff’s investigation. Arrest in fatal shooting of Salem, man SALEM (AP) — Salem, police have made an arrest in a fatal shooting that happened in the parking lot of a local Walmart store. Police detectives arrested 41-year-old Mark Edward Brown of Salem early Tuesday in a Tigard hotel room. He was arrested for investigation of murder in Monday’s death of 28-yearold Bryan John Lee Knorr, also of Salem. Police Lt. Dave Okada says the victim had been shopping and was confronted in the parking lot by a gunman. Okada says shots were fired after a confrontation.
