CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Michelle Obama’s message:
President Barack Obama is
just like you.
“Barack knows the American
Dream because he’s
lived it,” the first lady told
the Democratic National
Convention on Tuesday in
an address intended to reassure
voters that her husband
shares their values — hard
work, perseverance and
optimism — while also
drawing a contrast between
him and Mitt Romney.
Mrs. Obama never mentioned
the president’s
Republican challenger, who
grew up in a world of privilege
and wealth.
But the point was clear as
she wove a tapestry of their
early years together, when
money was tight and times
were tough, when they were
“so in love, and so in debt.”
She reminisced about the
man who now occupies the
Oval Office pulling his
favorite coffee table out of
the trash and wearing dress
shoes that were half a size
too small. And she told stories
about a president who
still takes time to eat dinner
with his daughters nearly
every night, answering their
questions about the news
and strategizing about middle-school
friendships.
With a mix of personal
anecdotes and policy talk,
Mrs. Obama’s speech was
her most political yet.
“Today, after so many
struggles and triumphs and
moments that have tested
my husband in ways I never
could have imagined, I have
seen firsthand that being
president doesn’t change
who you are — it reveals who
you are,” she said.
To that end, the first lady
painted a portrait of a leader
who knows the struggles of
everyday Americans, who
listens to them as president
and who pushes an agenda
with their interests in mind.
“That’s the man I see in
those quiet moments late at
night, hunched over his
desk, poring over the letters
people have sent him,” she
said. “I see the concern in his

eyes ... and I hear the determination
in his voice as he
tells me, ‘You won’t believe
what these folks are going
through, Michelle. It’s not
right. We’ve got to keep
working to fix this. We’ve got
so much more to do.”z
She added: “I see how
that’s what drives Barack
Obama every single day.”
With such stories, the first
lady sought to counter
Republicans trying to paint
Obama as something other
than a typical American, and

implied that it was Romney
who couldn’t relate to people
trying to get by in tough economic
times.
To be sure, neither Romney
nor Obama fits the bill of
the average, working-class
American struggling with
credit card debt and mortgage
payments. Both are
millionaires who live a privileged
life few Americans will
ever experience.
But each candidate is trying
to convince Americans
that they’re best suited to
run an economy hampered
by sluggish growth and high
unemployment. Polls show
Romney leading on who voters
say would best to manage
the economy; but Obama
has the advantage on who
voters believe understands
their economic challenges
better.
As she stood in the center
of the convention’s bluecarpeted
stage, Mrs.
Obama’s words went
straight to the core of the
contrast Democrats are trying
to draw between Obama
and Romney. They say the
president is pushing policies
to boost the middle class,
while Romney wants to protect
the wealthy and hope

Pentagon says ex-SEAL
book contains secrets
WASHINGTON (AP) — A
former Navy SEAL’s insider
account of the raid that killed
Osama bin Laden contains
classified information, the
Pentagon said Tuesday, and
the admiral who heads the
Naval Special Warfare
Command said details in the
book may provide enemies
with dangerous insight into
secretive U.S. operations.
Rear Adm. Sean Pybus
told his force Tuesday that
“hawking details about a
mission” and selling other
information about SEAL
training and operations puts
the force and their families at
risk.
“For an elite force that
should be humble and disciplined
for life, we are certainly
not appearing to be
so,” Pybus wrote in a letter to
the roughly 8,000 troops
under his command. “We
owe our chain of command
much better than this.”
The letter was obtained
by The Associated Press.
At the Pentagon, press
secretary George Little said
that an official review of the
book, “No Easy Day,” determined
that it reveals what he
called “sensitive and classified”
information. He was
not more specific but said
the author was required to
submit the book to the
Pentagon before publication
for a formal review of potential
disclosures of such
information.
“When you have special
operations units that per-
form these missions, there
are tactics, techniques, and
procedures, not to mention
human life, that are in play,”
Little said. “And it is the
height of irresponsibility not
to have this kind of material
checked for the possible disclosure
of classified information.”
He told reporters during a
briefing that the Pentagon is
still reviewing what legal
options should be taken
against the author.
If the Pentagon determines
the bin Laden book
does disclose classified
secrets, the government
could consider bringing federal
criminal charges against
Bissonnette. The potential
charges and penalties would
depend largely on what type
of secrets were disclosed.
Pybus, in his letter, was
more direct, saying that,
“We must immediately
reconsider how we properly
influence our people in and
out of uniform NOT to seek
inappropriate monetary,
political, or celebrity profit
from their service” with the
SEALS.
“We all have much to gain
or lose,” he said. “In the
weeks ahead, we will be taking
actions to meet this challenge,
and I appreciate your
leadership and support of
our community in this
effort.”
Last week, Adm. William
McRaven, head of U.S.
Special Operations
Command, warned his
troops that he would take
legal action against anyone
found to have exposed sensitive
information that could
cause fellow forces harm.
The Naval Special Warfare
Command is a unit within
U.S. Special Operations
Command.
National debt hits $16T
WASHINGTON (AP) —
The Treasury Department
said Tuesday that the national
debt has topped $16 trillion,
the result of chronic
government deficits that have
poured more than $50,000
worth of red ink onto federal
ledgers for every man, woman
and child in the United States.
The news was greeted
with a round of press releases
from Barack Obama’s GOP
rivals, who used the grimbut-expected
news to criticize
the president for the government’s
fiscal performance
over his 3 1/2 years in office.

claim that it stole personal
identification data on millions
of Apple device owners
from an FBI agent’s laptop.

bureau never asked for and
never possessed the database

Obama has presided over four
straight years of trillion dollar-plus
deficits after inheriting
a weak economy from his
predecessor, George W. Bush.
“We can no longer push
off the tough decisions until
tomorrow,” said No. 2 House
Republican Eric Cantor, R-Va.
“It’s time to address the serious
fiscal challenges we face
and stop spending money we
don’t have.” Last summer,
Cantor dropped out of a set of
budget talks hosted by Vice
President Joe Biden, citing
the insistence of the White
House on tax increases to help
close deficits that require the
government to borrow 33
cents of every dollar it
spends.
The spiraling debt means
that lawmakers and the eventual
winner of the White
House in November will have
to pass a law early next year to
raise the government’s borrowing
cap from the current
ceiling of $16.39 trillion.
Passing such legislation last
year proved enormously difficult
and the nation’s credit
rating suffered.
Hackers say they have Apple device
data; FBI disputes accusation

numbers for Apple
devices, which could include
iPhones and iPads. AntiSec
said the data is just a piece of
the more than 12 million
unique identification numbers
and personal information
on the device owners
that it got from a laptop used
by an FBI agent.
The FBI denied that it
ever had that information.
But officials there said they
could not verify the validity
of the data that AntiSec
released. Federal officials
also warned that computer
users should be careful when
clicking on such links
because they sometimes may
contain malware that can
infect computers.
Joe Stewart, a security
researcher with Atlantabased
Dell SecureWorks,
said, however, that he tested
the link and did not find any
connection to malware.

of her husband’s policies

economy back from the
brink of collapse to creating
jobs again.”
“In the end, for Barack,
these issues aren’t political.
They’re personal,” she said.
The first lady, wearing a
bright pink dress, drew
thunderous applause from
the crowd and chants of
“four more years” that are
more often reserved for the
president.
At the White House,
Obama watched his wife’s
speech with the couple’s two
young daughters.
“I’m going to try to not let
them see their daddy cry
because when Michelle
starts talking, I start getting
all misty,” the president said
at rally earlier Tuesday in
Norfolk, Va.
