The Athletics and Events Center
Since opening in the
fall of 2011, the $65.5
million Athletics and
Events Center has given Ithaca
College’s student-athletes a
state-of-the-art facility in which
to train and compete, while
offering the entire campus a
place to gather for significant
College and community events.
Honored with an Innovative
Architecture & Design Award
from Recreation Management
magazine, the A&E Center
in its first year hosted the
Bomber Wrestling Invitational,
Empire 8 Indoor Track & Field
Championships, and Empire 8
Men’s Tennis Championships,
among other athletic contests,
providing a valuable “home
field” advantage to Ithaca teams.
It was designed to meet
at least LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental
Design) silver standards, and
the signature tower is more than
just an architectural feature—it
functions to provide natural
cooling and ventilation to the
large indoor space.
The complex includes
the following:
• A 130,000-square-foot field
house, which holds the track
and field arena (200-meter, sixlane
track with throwing cage
and jumping pits) that doubles
as an practice facility for
lacrosse, field hockey, soccer,
baseball, tennis, golf, softball,
and football.
• The field house also
includes athletic training and
strength training facilities, a
“gallery of champions” hall
of fame display, press box,
athletics offices, team rooms,
and locker rooms.
• A 47,000-square-foot
aquatics pavilion, which includes
a nine-lane, Olympic-size pool
with a diving area and moveable
bulkheads, warming tub, pool
deck, spectator area seating
nearly 1,000, dividable “wet”
classroom for athletic and
academic programs, coaches’
offices, and locker rooms.
• An 82,000-square-foot
outdoor stadium with a
multisport synthetic playing
surface that can be illuminated
to allow for evening use. The
lights use special technology
to minimize the impact on
surrounding neighborhoods.
Stadium seating accommodates
up to 1,000 spectators.
• Six regulation-size outdoor
tennis courts with lighting
for evening practice and
competition.
