Jim Nichols, Head Coach<br />

Jim Nichols enters his 17th year as the head<br />

coach of the <strong>Ithaca</strong> men’s cross country team.<br />

The Bombers have qualified as a team for the<br />

NCAA championship five times during his career,<br />

including a top finish of ninth in 2001. That year<br />

Nichols earned Atlantic Region coach of the year<br />

honors after guiding the team to its first regional<br />

championship. In 2003 he earned Empire 8 coach<br />

of the year honors. Nichols was an assistant coach<br />

for six seasons before taking over as head coach in<br />

1992. He has also been <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s head men’s track<br />

& field coach for the past 22 years and has twice<br />

served as the head women’s track & field coach,<br />

totaling nine years (1986-93, 1998-2000). Nichols guided the women’s team<br />

to its first ever outdoor state and ECAC titles in 1987 and their first indoor<br />

state and ECAC championships during the 1988-89 campaign. During his<br />

career he’s coached 58 championship teams in cross country and indoor<br />

and outdoor track & field (30 state crowns, 17 conference titles and 10<br />

ECAC championships).<br />

Nichols was selected by USA Track and Field to serve on the staff for<br />

the 2002 World Cross Country Championships. He was team leader for the<br />

U.S. junior men’s team that finished seventh out of 18 teams in Dublin,<br />

Ireland, in March 2002. His duties included serving as the chief facilitator<br />

for the athletes and handling aspects of competition and travel surrounding<br />

the event. He also assisted in the selection of the team and the trials.<br />

Nichols has coached 29 all-Americans at <strong>Ithaca</strong>, including the 1992<br />

national champion in the women’s outdoor 5,000-meter run. His teams<br />

have won 17 state championships, including first-ever titles in men’s cross<br />

country, men’s indoor track and field and men’s outdoor track and field in<br />

2000. His teams have won five ECAC championships. Prior to his arrival<br />

at <strong>Ithaca</strong>, Nichols served as head cross country and track and field coach at<br />

Plattsburgh for two years. He coached the 1986 men’s NCAA Division III<br />

800-meter indoor champion.<br />

Nichols was an all-American cross country runner at North Central<br />

<strong>College</strong> and was a member of the school’s national championship teams<br />

in 1978 and 1979. Following his graduation in 1979 he served as assistant<br />

coach for the track and cross country teams at North Central and was a<br />

graduate assistant for both sports at Indiana University.<br />

eRIC SAMBOleC<br />

Eric Sambolec is entering his third year as a member<br />

of the Bombers’ coaching staff after being a head<br />

coach at the junior college and high school levels.<br />

Sambolec previously served as the head women’s<br />

cross country and assistant track & field coach<br />

at Lansing Community <strong>College</strong> (Mich.), leading the<br />

team to four NJCAA Region XII titles and four topfive<br />

finishes at the NJCAA National Championship<br />

meet. Sambolec was named the NJCAA Region<br />

XII and MCCAA Coach of the Year four times as his athletes earned 42<br />

all-American honors and set 10 school records.<br />

Prior to his arrival at Lansing, Sambolec was the head cross country and<br />

assistant track & field coach at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Tonawanda,<br />

where his teams set 19 school, league or course records. He recorded the<br />

best won-loss record in school history and guided three state qualifiers.<br />

Sambolec is a 1999 <strong>Ithaca</strong> graduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in<br />

psychology. He earned 10 varsity letters as a member of the Bombers’cross<br />

country and track & field teams and was the cross country team captain as<br />

a senior. He earned three all-NYSCTC honors and was a NCAA all-region<br />

performer as a junior.<br />

Sambolec received his master’s degree in psychology from Michigan<br />

State in 2002, where he also earned his Ph.D. in social & personality psychology<br />

with a minor in sport psychology in 2006. His research emphasis<br />

was on group and individual motivation. Sambolec is a USATF Level I<br />

certified track & field coach and has a USATF Level II certification in<br />

endurance.<br />

the Bombers at the NCAA<br />

regional meet last season.<br />

4 Men’s Cross Country <strong>2008</strong><br />

<strong>Ithaca</strong> will return 15 runners from last<br />

year’s team, including six of their seven<br />

competitors at the NCAA Atlantic Regional<br />

Championship. They will be joined<br />

by two former cross country runners and<br />

four incoming freshman. The Bombers will<br />

look move in up in one of the most competitive<br />

regions in collegiate cross country.<br />

2007 RECAP: <strong>Ithaca</strong> finished in the top<br />

10 at all of their races last year, and winning<br />

at Roberts Wesleyan. They finished second<br />

at the Empire 8 championship, and were seventh<br />

at the New York State Collegiate Track<br />

(NYSCTC) championship. The Bombers<br />

closed their season with a 10th place finish<br />

at the NCAA Regional Championship. Three<br />

runners received all-Empire 8 honors.<br />

KEY LOSSES: The Bombers lost two<br />

seniors to graduation. Jim Walker, who<br />

served as the team’s captain in 2007, ran in<br />

four races in 2007 and finished in the topseven<br />

for <strong>Ithaca</strong> at Oneonta. Kyle Miller<br />

finished in <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top-seven in all seven<br />

races he competed in. He was named as the<br />

Bombers most improved runner in 2007 and was named second-team all-<br />

Empire 8.<br />

<strong>2008</strong> OUTLOOK: <strong>Ithaca</strong> will have thee captains this year seniors<br />

Danny George and Tim Shea and junior Drew Hodge. George was the<br />

Bombers’ top finisher at Oswego and placed in the top seven two other<br />

times. He ran in five races in 2007. Shea placed in the top-seven in five of<br />

his six races last year, and was <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s second man to finish at the NCAA<br />

Regional meet, which was held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Shea<br />

was a second-team all-conference runner. Hodge did not run in 2007 but<br />

was an all-conference, all-state, and all-region performer as a sophomore.<br />

Senior Corey Schallek ran five races for the Bombers last year, with two<br />

top-seven finishes.<br />

The junior class is comprised of eight runners, including Curt Bell, the<br />

Bombers’ top finisher at the final four races of 2007. He finished 55th at<br />

the regional meet. Bell was named first-team all-Empire 8. Scott Walker<br />

also competed in the conference, state, and regional meets and was <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s<br />

third finisher at Van Cortlandt. Phil Abbott led the Bombers’ with seven<br />

top-seven finishes in 2007. Other returning juniors include Nate Bartman,<br />

Brian Ivory, Nate Lavieri-Scull, Eric Olen and Brian Riley.<br />

Stefan Karkuff and Anthony Palma lead a class of five sophomores.<br />

Both ran in all three championship meets in 2007 and had six and five<br />

top-seven finishes, respectively. John Davis had five top-seven finishes in<br />

2007, and ran at the state meet. The other sophomores are Tyler Gustafson<br />

and A.J. McConville.<br />

The Bombers welcome four incoming freshmen in <strong>2008</strong>: Jacob Brower,<br />

Daniel Craighead, Jared Finke and Tyler Murray.<br />

<strong>2008</strong> SCHEDULE: The Bombers will compete in regular season meets<br />

hosted by Cornell, Hamilton, Lehigh, Misericordia, Oneonta, Oswego,<br />

and St. Lawrence. The Empire 8 championship will be held in conjunction<br />

with Union’s Saratoga Invitational and the NYSCTC meet will be hosted<br />

by Hamilton. The NCAA Atlantic Regional meet will be hosted by St.<br />

Lawrence, with the NCAA Championship at Hanover.

DANNY GeORGe<br />

2007: George competed in five<br />

races as a junior, recording a pair<br />

of top-20 finishes. George was<br />

<strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top finisher at the seasonopening<br />

Oswego Invitational, placing<br />

15th. He ran a season-best time<br />

of 27:22 at the NYU Invitational.<br />

2006: George missed the cross<br />

country season due to injury. He turned in an ECAC<br />

qualifying time of 4:03.38 in the 1,500-meter run at<br />

the New Balance Last Chance Meet during the outdoor<br />

track & field season. 2005: George ran in six races as a<br />

freshman with four top-seven team finishes. He was the<br />

Bombers’ top finisher at Houghton, placing 17th overall, and had a seasonbest<br />

seventh-place finish at Cornell. High School: George was a member<br />

of the cross country team at Walter Johnson High School. He served as<br />

team captain his senior season and was the recipient of the team’s Wildcat<br />

Award. George was also a member of the indoor and outdoor track & field<br />

teams. Personal: A clinical health studies/physical therapy major, he is the<br />

son of Raymond and Maureen George.<br />

DReW HODGe<br />

2007: Hodge returns to the Bombers<br />

after a one-year hiatus in 2007 and<br />

will serve as a team captain during<br />

his senior season. 2006: Hodge<br />

earned all-conference, all-state, and<br />

all-region honors as a sophomore<br />

after placing third, 15th and 34th<br />

at the Empire 8, NYSCTC and<br />

NCAA Regional Championships,<br />

respectively. He was among <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top finishers in each<br />

of the seven races he competed and was the Bombers top<br />

finisher at the Oswego Invitational and the conference<br />

championship, where he posted a season-best time of<br />

26:08. 2005: Hodge earned first-team all-conference honors after placing<br />

seventh at the Empire 8 Championship with a time of 26:28, which was good<br />

for 33rd at the NYSCTC Championship. He recorded his personal best time<br />

of 26:28 at the Saratoga Invitational. Hodge was in <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top-seven in six<br />

of the seven races he competed in as a freshman. He was the Bombers’ top<br />

finisher at the state championship and was the team’s runner-up at Hamilton,<br />

Rensselaer and at the NCAA Regional Championship. Hodge was a recipient<br />

of the Edward Rollinson Scholar-Athlete Award as a member of the<br />

track & field team. High School: Hodge ran at Rancocas Valley Regional<br />

High School for Ed Moore where he was a two-time county all-star and<br />

was also named first-team all-county. Personal: A television-radio major,<br />

he is the son of Vernon Hodge Jr. and E. Tiffany Hodge.<br />

2007: Shea ran in five races as a<br />

junior, earning a pair of top-10<br />

finishes. Shea placed 11th at the<br />

Empire 8 Championships, earning<br />

second-team all-conference honors.<br />

He was <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top finisher at<br />

the Houghton Invitational, placing<br />

seventh overall. He also finished<br />

fourth overall at the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational, helping<br />

the Bombers to the team title. Shea ran a careerbest<br />

time of 26:16 to place 60th at the NCAA Regional<br />

Championship. 2006: Shea was among <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top-seven<br />

finishers in each of the six races he competed in as a<br />

sophomore. He posted three top-15 finishes, including a sixth-place finish<br />

at Roberts Wesleyan and a seventh-place finish at Houhgton. Shea’s<br />

season-best time of 26:31 was good for 12th at Lehigh’s Paul Short Open.<br />

2005: Shea competed in three races as a freshman, recording a personal<br />

best time of 26:57 to finish 25th overall at Oswego. He also competed at<br />

Lehigh’s Paul Short Open and at the NYSCTC Championship meet. High<br />

School: Shea ran at LaSalle <strong>College</strong> High School for Pat Devine where<br />

he was named First-Team All-Catholic League and was a member of the<br />

Philadelphia Catholic League championship team as a senior. Personal: A<br />

physical therapy major, he is the son of Joseph and Barbara Shea.<br />

PHIl ABBOTT<br />

2007: Abbott competed in seven<br />

races as a sophomore and was<br />

among <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top-six finishers in<br />

each race. Abbott ran a career-best<br />

time of 27:02 to place 10th at the<br />

Roberts Wesleyan Invitational,<br />

helping the Bombers to a firstplace<br />

team finish. Abbott placed<br />

18th at the Empire 8 Championships<br />

and 69th at the NYSCTC Championship. He was<br />

the second Bomber to finish at the Oswego Invitational,<br />

placing 24th overall. 2006: Abbott competed in six races<br />

in his first year at <strong>Ithaca</strong> with two top-seven team finishes.<br />

He placed 24th at the Empire 8 Championship with a season-best time<br />

of 27:28 and had a season-best finish of 16th at Houghton. High School:<br />

A 2006 graduate of Lansing High School, Abbott was coached by Jason<br />

Eade. He earned three varsity letters as a member of the cross country team<br />

and competed at the state championship meet all three years he lettered.<br />

Abbott also earned eight varsity letters as a member of the indoor and outdoor<br />

track & field team. Personal: A sound recording technology major, he<br />

is the son of Jeff and Lori Abbott. His brother, Jeff, graduated from <strong>Ithaca</strong><br />

in 2007 and was also a member of the cross country team.<br />

CuRT Bell<br />

Jr.; Marcellus<br />

2007: Bell ran in six races as a<br />

sophomore. He was the top <strong>Ithaca</strong><br />

finisher in the final four races of<br />

the season. Bell earned first-team<br />

all-conference honors after placing<br />

sixth in the Empire 8 Championship<br />

with a time of 26:17.<br />

He finished 55th at the NCAA<br />

Regional Championship, running a career-best time of<br />

26:13. He also placed 30th at the NYSCTC Championship.<br />

Bell recorded <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top individual finish of the<br />

season, placing third at the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational.<br />

His performance led the Bombers to the team<br />

championship at the meet. 2006: Bell scored in eight of the nine races he<br />

competed in as a freshman, including a season-best finish of ninth at Roberts<br />

Wesleyan. He placed 18th at the Empire 8 Championship with a time<br />

of 27:16 and turned in a season-best time of 27:02 at Lehigh’s Paul Short<br />

Open, good for 38th overall. High School: A 2006 graduate of Marcellus<br />

High School, Bell was coached by Susan Wright and Oscar Jensen. He<br />

earned five varsity letters with the cross country team, earning all-division,<br />

all-league, and team MVP honors. He served as team captain, team MVP,<br />

and was a third-team all-state performer, placing 20th at the state championship<br />

meet. He earned seven additional varsity letters with the indoor and<br />

outdoor track & field teams. Personal: A sport media major, he is the son<br />

of Bill and Denise Bell.<br />

2007: Ivory ran in seven races as<br />

a sophomore, posting four top-<br />

30 finishes. His top performance<br />

came at the Roberts Wesleyan<br />

Invitational, where Ivory helped<br />

the Bombers win the team title by<br />

placing eighth with a career-best<br />

time of 26:53. Ivory was <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s<br />

top performer at the Hamilton Invitational,<br />

finishing 14th overall. 2006: Ivory competed<br />

in six races as a freshman with four top-25 finishes and<br />

two top-seven team finishes, including a season-best<br />

19th-place finish at Hamilton. He recorded a seasonbest<br />

time of 27:25 in the season-opener at Oswego. Ivory placed 23rd at<br />

Roberts Wesleyan and notched 24th-place finishes at invitationals hosted<br />

by Houghton and Oneonta. High School: A 2006 graduate of John Jay<br />

High School, Ivory was coached by Steve Perks. He earned four varsity<br />

letter as a member of the cross country team and served as team captain<br />

his senior year. Ivory was an all-league and all-county performer and was<br />

named team MVP his senior year. He earned four varsity letters with the<br />

indoor and outdoor track & field teams, serving as team captain and earrning<br />

all-league honors. Personal: An integrated marketing communications<br />

2007: Riley ran in seven races<br />

during his second season at <strong>Ithaca</strong>.<br />

He was <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s top finisher at<br />

the Oneonta Airfield Invitational,<br />

placing 16th overall. Riley ran a<br />

career-best time of 27:53 at the<br />

Roberts Wesleyan Invitational,<br />

placing 32nd overall. He also<br />

competed in the Empire 8 Championships,<br />

finishing 34th. 2006: Riley competed in<br />

six races as a freshman. He posted a season-best time<br />

of 28:29 in <strong>Ithaca</strong>’s season-opener at Oswego. High<br />

School: A 2006 graduate of Cathedral High School, Riley<br />

was coached by Dan Walsh. He earned three varsity letters with the<br />

cross country team and was the recipient of the team MVP, coaches and<br />

senior awards. Riley also earned varsity letters as a member of the indoor<br />

and outdoor track & field teams. Personal: A communications major, he is<br />

2007: Walker competed in six races,<br />

NCAA Regional Championship, placing 67th. Walker<br />

had a career-best fifth-place finish at the Roberts Wesleyan<br />

Invitational, helping <strong>Ithaca</strong> place first in the team<br />

standings. 2006: Walker scored in each of the eight<br />

races he competed in as a freshman, including four top-15 finishes. He<br />

earned second-team all-conference honors after placing 11th at the Empire<br />

8 Championship with a season-best time of 26:54. Walker had a seasonbest<br />

10th-place finish at Roberts Wesleyan. High School: A 2006 graduate<br />

of Midland Park High School, Walker was coached by Jack Ferriday. He<br />

was a three-year letter winner as a member of the cross country team and<br />

served as team captain his junior and senior years. Walker was an allleague<br />

and all-county performer and helped lead his team to a fourth-place<br />

finish at the 2005 state championship meet. He also lettered with the track<br />

& field teams and won the outdoor league and county titles in the 800-meter<br />

run. Personal: A business major, he is the son of Donald and Gale<br />

Walker. His brother, James, is a <strong>2008</strong> <strong>Ithaca</strong> graduate and was a four-year<br />

Invitational, placing 26th. Palma<br />

posted a season-best 12th-place<br />

finish at the Roberts Wesleyan<br />

the NCAA Regional Championship, placing 86th. He<br />

also placed 21st at the Empire 8 Championship. High<br />

School: A 2007 graduate of Bernards High School, Palma<br />
