EMPIRE 8 HISTORY AND MEMBERSHIP: This season
marks the 10th year of Empire 8-sponsored football and the
eighth year that the conference’s champion will receive an
automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. The 2004 addition of
Norwich and Springfield as affiliate members brought the
league’s total to seven football playing members. Norwich
dropped out of the conference following the 2008 season,
but the NCAA allows conferences a two-year grace period
to replace members in order to maintain their automatic
bids. Frostburg State and Salisbury join the Empire 8 as
affiliate members for the 2011 season. In 2012, Buffalo
State will replace Springfield as an affiliate member.
The Bombers own an all-time record of 37-10 (.829)
in league competition. They were fifth in the conference’s
2011 preseason poll.
The Bombers won the inaugural Empire 8 title in 2002
and repeated as conference champion in 2003, posting
a 4-0 league record each season. In 2004 Ithaca and St.
John Fisher tied for the league crown with 5-1 records. In
2005 the Bombers posted the Empire 8’s first 6-0 record
en route to their fourth league championship then won the
title outright in 2008 with a 5-1 mark. The Bombers also
won conference titles in the Independent College Athletic
Conference (forerunner to the Empire 8) in 1974, 1975,
1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987.
RECORD WATCH: (note Ithaca career and season records
include post-season games since 2002; statistics compiled
in post-season games before that do not count toward
Ithaca career and season records)
Senior wide receiver Dan Ruffrage has 120 career
receptions, which ranks tied-5th all-time at Ithaca. He’s
24 catches away from the school record, held by Thomas
Vossler. Ruffrage has 14 career touchdown receptions,
tied for third all-time at Ithaca, and he is seventh all-time in
receiving yards with 1,567.
Senior Andrew Rogowski ranks among the top scorers,
placekickers and punters in Ithaca history. His 190
career points ranks seventh overall and third among Ithaca
placekickers, trailing Brett Kitenplon (second overall,
281 points) and Matt Sullivan (fifth overall, 205 points).
Rogowski became the 28th Bomber (and sixth kicker) to
reach 100 career points. Rogowski ranks sixth in career
punts with 105, and he punted 58 times in 2010, the thirdhighest
single-season total.
NEXT WEEK: The Bombers travel to Springfield for a 2
p.m. contest.
