About
The EFFI‐CYCLE® is an event for the undergraduate engineering students, organized by the Society of
Automotive Engineers India, Northern Section. The event originated in the in the year 2010 at
University Institute of Engineering & Technology, Chandigarh; under the patronage of Sh. I.V Rao,
Chairman, SAE NIS and convenership of Ms Pamela Tikku. The EFFI‐CYCLE tasks the students to
design, fabricate and validate a two seater three – wheeled vehicle powered by human – electric
hybrid power, to take part in a series of events spread over a course of 3 days that test the vehicle
for the sound engineering practices that have gone into it, the agility of the vehicle in terms of
gradability, speed, acceleration and manoeuvrability characteristics and finally its ability to endure
that treacherous durability test.
Society of Automotive Engineers
Society of Automotive Engineers is a non‐profit body that promotes and undertakes initiatives for
advancement in mobility technologies catering to land, water and space. The society, based at
Warrendale, USA; boasts of over 128,000 memberships at the end of year 2009 spread over 100
nations. The body is involved in creating avenues for both professionals and students alike to
generate awareness and promote futuristic technologies. A few such initiatives undertaken by SAE
are the World Congress, Tech Symposiums and Conferences, Professional Development Programs,
etc for the practicing engineers and the AeroDesign Challenge, Snowmobile Design Challenge,
FormulaSAE, BAJA SAE and A World In Motion for the students.
Society of Automotive Engineers India
The Indian chapter of SAE – SAEINDIA, is the largest affiliate of SAE with over 22,825 student
members and 2,425 professional memberships. SAEINDIA headquartered at Chennai is represented
through its sections as depicted in the pictorial below.
The SAE NIS boasts of several initiatives the SAEINDIA Foundation, Kalpana Chawla Awards, the
annual SAE International Presidential Meet and now, the EFFI‐CYCLE – bound to drive the future!
EFFI-CYCLE: A Brief History
The EFFI‐CYCLE stands for “EFFICIENT CYCLE”. The concept originated in the year 2009 at the Netaji
Subhas Institute of Technology, where it was taken up as a Bachelor’s of Engineering Degree Project
by three highly active student members of SAEINDIA, namely – Ankur Anand, Ravi Goel and
Siddharth Varshney. The concept received laurels as it was awarded as the Best Degree Project for
the year 2009. The idea was further investigated and developed as the EFFI‐CYCLE in collaboration
with representatives from University Institute of Engineering & Technology.
A detailed project and guidelines were established and presented to the working committee of
SAEINDIA Northern Section. The idea was heartedly accepted and Ms Pamela Tikku, a member of the
working committee of SAE NIS and actively involved in the coveted BAJA SAEINDIA, agreed to lead
the event as the Convener and the maiden EFFI‐CYCLE was launched in the year 2010.
For its 1 st edition 18 teams participated in the event through 23 rd – 24 th October 2010, at the campus
of U.I.E.T, Chandigarh. The event received both intellectual and financial support through Maruti
Suzuki, Minda (Ashok Minda Group), Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd, Nippon Audio and ICAT, offering
awards up to 2.5 Lakhs INR. The event, an imminent hit with the student community received
participation requests from nearly 90 engineering institutes across the country, for its 2 nd edition
scheduled for October 2011.
The 2 nd edition of EFFI‐CYCLE was announced during April 2011, for 14 – 16 th October 2011 at U.I.E.T,
Chandigarh.
EFFI-CYCLE 2011
The 2 nd edition of EFFI‐CYCLE was conducted from 14 th – 16 th October 2011, hosted by University
Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The added feature is the
introduction of Human – Electric Hybrid Power driving the vehicle. The selection process of teams is
as follows:
