linear feet of manuscripts concerning vessels in the San Francisco Bay and other locations, along with photographs of 

lighthouses, transportation, family and other subjects. The documents consist of correspondence between Dudley Thickens 

and Charles and Ruth Loring.

The materials were donated by Mr. Thicken's son John Thickens. Thickens dropped off all of his father's materials at the Bay 

Area Electric Railroad Association in 2002 and they separated out the maritime materials. Formally accessioned in 2006. 

Historical or Biographical Note 

Dudley Wold Thickens (1913-1993) was a life-long resident of the San Ramon Valley and avid photographer of railroads and 

vessels in the San Francisco Bay area. His vessel photographs are an important documentary record of the activities in the 

San Francisco Bay, much like the ship traffic records kept by the Marine Exchange of the San Francisco Bay Region. 

Dudley Wold Thickens was born on November 10, 1913. After his father passed away in 1917, he came to the Saranap, 

California area with his mother Emma Wold Thickens and younger sister Virginia E Thickens. Thickens went to the Saranap 

Elementary School for about five years, completing first through fourth grade and transferred to Walnut Creek school 

midway through his fifth grade year. He then attended high school at San Ramon High in Danville around 1927 or 1929. 

From 1932 to 1933, Thickens took a post-graduate course in "commercial subjects" in Concord. While in school, Thickens 

worked for Mrs. Jennie Bickerstaff Dewing, later known as Mrs. Rosenberg, making $3.00 for a half-day's work doing yard 

work. Thickens married Louise Odell and they lived in Lafayette where they had three children: Elizabeth (born 1954), John 

(born 1956), and Richard (born 1958). 

Thickens was fascinated by railroads in his youth, particularly the Sacramento Northern Railway. He began photographing 

railroads in 1932. In 1935 he started working for the Sacramento Northern and he took this opportunity to travel and

document the Sacramento Northern operations. In 1940 he transferred to the Western Pacific Railroad Company where he 

worked in the Freight Traffic Department until his retirement. 

Thickens was a founding member of the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association and served in many official positions, 

including as President in 1950-1951. In June 1950, he co-wrote an article with Ira L. Swett, Arthur L. Lloyd, Vernon J. 

Sappers, and Addison H. Laflin Jr. titled "Sacramento Northern," in the special issue for the Electric Railway Association of 

Southern California. In the 1940s Thickens became interested in Pacific Coast shipping and started taking photographs of 

vessels in the San Francisco Bay and in other locations where he traveled. In 1961, Thickens started a correspondence and 

friendship with Charles Marshall Loring and they sent each other photographs and information about various vessels until 

Loring's death in 1973. He was a member of the local chapter of the World Ship Society and wrote many articles for their 

newsletter INTERCOM and he was also involved in Toastmasters. Dudley Thickens was a life-long resident of the San Ramon 

Valley and died on May 18, 1993.

Collection Scope and Content 

The Dudley Thickens photographs (P06-030, SAFR 22582) contains approximately 3,450 photographs and 0.4 linear feet of 

manuscripts concerning vessels in the San Francisco Bay and other locations, along with photographs of lighthouses, 

transportation, family and other subjects. The documents consist of correspondence between Dudley Thickens and Charles 

and Ruth Loring. 

The collection is predominantly comprised of black-and-white photographs that Dudley Thickens took of vessels in the San 

Francisco Bay in the 1940s-1970s. Most are American and foreign built merchant vessels. There are also photographs of 

tug boats, pilot boats, lightships, and government vessels. Most of the collection is made up of black-and-white negatives 

although there are also some photographic prints. There is a small amount of correspondence between Dudley Thickens 

and Charles Marshall Loring, 1961-1973 and Dudley Thickens and Ruth Loring, 1973-1975.

Scope and Content Note 

Contains photographic negatives and prints of American and foreign merchant vessels and 

government vessels in the San Francisco Bay. Also includes a small amount of photographs 

of vessels taken in other locations in the United States. While it can be assumed that most of 

the photographic negatives were taken in the San Francisco Bay, it was only listed in the 

summary note area of the finding aid if we were able to confirm this through the annotations 

on the original envelopes or visually from background details in the image. The San 

Francisco Bay area locations in these photographs include: Alameda; Antioch; Broadway 

wharf; Carquinez Straits; Golden Gate Bridge; Hunter's Point; Lafayette; Mare Island; 

Martinez; Oakland; Oakland Army Base; Port of Oakland; Port of San Francisco; San 

Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge; Sausalito; Stockton; Vallejo.

The photographic negatives were taken by Dudley Thickens and most of the photographic 

prints are reproductions from other sources. Some of the original envelopes for the 

negatives had "L.S." written on the corner; we do not know what this means but it was 

added to the summary note of the finding aid when present. Some of the photographic prints 

were sent to Dudley Thickens by Charles Loring. Charles Loring acquired many of the prints 

by having copies made at archives and historical societies but some prints are original.

Maritime Library, William H. Topley collection, U.S. Navy Historical Society, Ernest D. Wichels 

collection.

Arrangement 

Arranged into three subseries: Vessels in the San Francisco Bay and in other locations; Ship 

Lines; Fishing Boats, Foreign Navy Vessels and United States Government Vessels. The 

subseries reflect the original groupings created by Dudley Thickens. Some vessel names on 

the original envelopes were incorrect and have been rectified during processing. Originally, 

some photographs were out of alphabetic order within the boxes and this has been 

corrected. There were some negatives grouped together in a miscellaneous section that did 

not have any commonalities and they have been integrated into subseries 1.1, file unit 1 

(ships organized alphabetically by name).

MORRIS (WMEC-147), built in 1927. The MORRIS spent virtually all of her life on the 

West Coast ranging from Seward, Alaska to San Diego, California. She performed 

many duties varing from patrolling the California coast on the lookout for 

bootleggers in her early days, through her World War II duties as a training ship 

and Sonar test platform, to her post war duties of law enforcement, search and 

rescue, and port security. She began her new life as a Sea Scout Ship on November

Troopships were operated by the Army Transportation Service, with "civilian" 

mariners; by the U.S. Navy; and the War Shipping Administration. Troopships 

included passenger liners, Liberty and Victory ships, and foreign ships taken over 

by the United States. Beginning in June 1941, the U.S. took over various foreign 

flag ships which were in U.S. ports for use as troopships and cargo ships. These 

were French, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, German, and Italian flag ships. In 

addition many British-flag troopships carried Americans overseas.

The correspondence is primarily about the exchange of vessel information between Charles 

Loring and Dudley Thickens. They discussed specific vessel data such as built date, size of 

vessel, etc. but they also discussed how the vessels fit into different aspects of maritime 

history. They sent each other photographs, articles and newsletters and also spoke briefly 

about their families and what was going on in their lives. The correspondence between Ruth 

Loring and Dudley Thickens starts around the time of Charles Loring's death and is primarily 

about some books that Ruth gave to Dudley and a mutual misunderstanding about whether 

or not the books were to have been paid for and for how much. The letter from Ernie Plant 

was sent with some vessel negatives which have been housed separately and described in 

series 1. 

Arrangement 

In original order. All correspondence is filed in reverse chronological order and incoming 

correspondence and copies of outgoing correspondence are filed together. Also includes 

several lists with vessel data (date built, measurements, etc.) which have been left in place 

with the correspondence. Photographic prints that Loring sent to Thickens have been housed 

separately and described in File Unit 2. Some of the items that Loring mentions that he sent 

to Thickens in the correspondence were not received in this collection (e.g. some photos, 

issues of the Sea Letter, etc.)

In August 1961 Dudley Thickens wrote a letter to Charles Marshall Loring because he had 

enjoyed reading Loring's articles in the Knave section of the Oakland Tribune and 

wondered if Loring could supply him with additional information about the Pacific Mail 

Steamship Company and the White Flyer Line. This was the start of a long 

correspondence and friendship surrounding the exchange of information and 

photographs of vessels (predominantly shipping vessels and ship lines). Per a letter of 

August 26, 1965, Dudley says that while he is interested in the history or lives of the 

vessels at present, he realizes that Loring's interest is in the construction and power of 

the ships per Loring's years of work in that field. 

Charles Marshall Loring was born January 13, 1899 to Charles A. Loring and Jane Marshall 

Loring. He had two younger brothers named Filson and Robert and their family lived in 

Alameda. From 1917-1921 Loring studied at the University of California, Berkeley. 

Charles Loring's wife was named Ruth and they had two sons. Loring was a maritime 

historian and in his own words was "vitally concerned with the preservation of the 

history" of the Alaska Packers Association fleet. He compiled the data so it could be 

preserved by institutions dedicated to preserving the maritime history of the United 

States. Loring regularly contributed articles about the Pacific Mail Steamship Company to 

the "Knave" column in the Oakland Tribune in the late 1950s. The "Knave" was begun 

during the 1930s and was dedicated principally to California local history. In 1961 Dudley 

Thickens wrote to Charles Loring because Thickens wanted to reactivate a branch of the 

World Ship Society along with several other members and they endeavored to create a 

mimeographed publication from time to time. This was the start of their decade long 

correspondence and friendship which revolved around the exchange of maritime data 

and photographs. Charles Marshall Loring died June 17, 1973 in Napa, California.

were already housed separately. Charles Loring donated many of the same photographs

photographs were reproductions made in the 1960s-1970s of material originally created 

as early as 1857.
