A Message from Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar<br />

It is a great pleasure and honor to greet you at this<br />

auspicious time, together with Chani and all the Shluchim<br />

and Shluchos, to send our best wishes for this special New<br />

Year 5”770” which begins on Shabbos.<br />

When Rosh Hashana coincides with Shabbos the Shofar is<br />

only sounded in the Temple (Beit Hamikdash) but not in<br />

the rest of the country. This comports with the decree<br />

established by the great Talmudic sage Rabbah, to<br />

safeguard a person who might go to seek instruction on<br />

how to blow the Shofar from a Master and will transgress<br />

by inadvertently carrying the Shofar in the public domain<br />

on Shabbos.<br />

Every area of Torah, including Talmud, Midrash and<br />

Kabbalah, emphasizes the enormous importance and<br />

critical aspects of blowing Shofar, which impacts not only<br />

the particular requirements of Rosh Hashana, but affects<br />

fundamental necessities for the entire year, both on the<br />

most sublime spiritual levels and the most basic physical<br />

realms. Shofar is in fact referred to as “the Mitzvah of the<br />

Day”.<br />

Shofar represents many factors: It is a sound of trumpets<br />

heralding the coronation of G-d as the King of the<br />

Universe; It reminds G-d of our unconditional allegiance as<br />

the Shofar is a horn of a ram which took the place of Isaac<br />

on the altar; It is the sound which the Jewish People heard<br />

at the Sinaic Revelation and the sound that will announce<br />

Moshiach; It is the cry of the child pleading with his/her<br />

Father for salvation; and many additional aspects<br />

discussed by our Rabbis.<br />

Why and how can we deny this powerful Mitzvah because<br />

some ignorant person may decide to learn to properly blow<br />

and may carry on Shabbos? Such an improbable<br />

circumstance to void this key Mitzvah!<br />

Shabbos is G-d’s day. All Holidays including Yom Kippur<br />

were established to commemorate central events in the<br />

formation of the Nation of Israel - Pesach we were<br />

liberated from enslavement and born as a Nation; Shavuos<br />

we received the Torah, culminating our complete<br />

emancipation; Sukkot, we thank Hashem for surrounding<br />

us with Clouds of Glory during our 40 year sojourn in the<br />

desert; Rosh Hashana is the anniversary of our Creation;<br />

Yom Kippur we are given the gift of forgiveness and<br />

expiation. Shabbos stands alone as the day established to<br />

commemorate G-d’s resting on the seventh day. It is a day<br />

dedicated solely to our respecting G-d that makes Shabbos<br />

so special.<br />

On that day the holy energies emanating from the Holy<br />

One, Blessed is He, are so powerful that whatever is<br />

affected by Shofar blowing is duplicated and fulfilled by<br />

the holiness of Shabbos.<br />

This year, we have dual forces: Shabbos which gives us all<br />

the benefits and blessings of the Shofar in a tranquil<br />

transcendent manner; and the actual sounds of the Shofar<br />

during the second 24 hour period of Rosh Hashana’s 48<br />

hour extended day.<br />

May we all merit all of Hashem’s blessings, represented by<br />

the full Aleph Beit starting from Aleph, the acronym of<br />

Orah/a year of light—to Taf which is the acronym for<br />

Torah/a year of Torah, and every blessing which begins<br />

with the additional 20 letters culminating with the<br />

ultimate Blessing of the coming of Moshiach during<br />

5”770”.<br />

May we all be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet<br />

year with health and peace of mind and soul.<br />

Celebrating Shabbos With Our Youth<br />

Everything you need for an "Over the Top" Shabbos experience<br />

Shabbos Schedule<br />

No longer will your children get lost amongst the crowds in <strong>Shul</strong> on<br />

Shabbos morning. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Shul</strong> youth has worked together to organize a<br />

highly educational and fun program for children and teens of all<br />

ages. Each Shabbos morning program involves a mix of Tefilla<br />

(prayer), Parsha (weekly Torah study) and general "Jewishness",<br />

through games, songs, and stories. Taught by our very own <strong>Shul</strong><br />

Bochurim and youth girls, each child will experience Shabbos in its<br />

full glory; leaving with a taste of holiness and fun memories that will<br />

keep them coming back from week to week. A Kiddush exclusively<br />

for the children culminates the exciting program.<br />

Shabbos with the Teen Boys Minyan<br />

Ever wonder how you can teach your son to follow with a real<br />

Minyan, or even run his own? <strong>The</strong> <strong>Shul</strong> youth has created the scene.<br />

Every Shabbos morning, each teen has his own chance to play a<br />

vital role in his own <strong>Shul</strong> Minyan, lead by one of our very own<br />

Rabbis and Youth leaders. Every week all the boys have a chance to<br />

act as Chazzan, Gabbai or ‘Rabbi’. This hands-on approach gives<br />

each teen the opportunity to experience <strong>Shul</strong> and prayer to its<br />

fullest, by involving them in every aspect of the Davening.<br />

1. Moshe Rabeinu gathered together all of the Jews, to bring<br />

them into the "Bris" on the 7th of Adar, the day he was<br />

going to pass away.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> Mitzvah of "Hakel" happens every seventh year, during<br />

the Sukkot after Shmitah, when everyone gathers in the<br />

Beis Hamikdash. <strong>The</strong> king then reads certain parts of Sefer<br />

Devarim.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> possuk says: "Vayelech Moshe" ("And Moshe went"). He<br />

was going to each Tribe to teach them the words of<br />

Hashem.<br />

We would like to emphasize that every Erev Shabbos, individuals<br />

should call the Eruv Hotline to make sure that the Eruv is<br />

operational prior to carrying on Shabbos.<br />

<strong>The</strong> number is 305- 866-ERUV (3788).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Eruv message is recorded approximately two hours prior to<br />

Candle lighting. Please note that the Eruv in Bal Harbour and<br />

Surfside does not include the path along the beach. <strong>The</strong> backs of<br />

the buildings form the Eruv in that section. It is forbidden to<br />

push strollers or carry anything on this path or beach area on<br />

Shabbos.<br />

Rosh Hashana<br />

Erev Rosh Hashana, Friday<br />

Elul 29, September 18<br />

No Tachnun is said Erev Rosh Hashana, but it is said in the<br />

morning Selichos and the previous Mincha.<br />

No Shofar is sounded to differentiate between the obligatory<br />

blowing of Shofar on Rosh Hashana and the customary blowing<br />

in Elul; also to confuse the Satan that he should think Rosh<br />

Hashana has passed.<br />

After davening we do "Hatoras Nedorim" (annulment of vows).<br />

Although it is permissible to do this in front of three people, it is<br />

preferable to do in front of 10 (a Minyan). If one does not<br />

understand Hebrew, it should be said in English.<br />

It is proper for men to immerse in a Mikveh on Erev Rosh<br />

Hashana. We get dressed up in honor of Rosh Hashana, being<br />

certain that Hashem will bless all of us with a good and sweet<br />

year.<br />

Candle Lighting time is 7:03 p.m.<br />

(single girls light one candle.)<br />

<strong>The</strong> two Brochos are:<br />

L'Hadlik Ner Shel Shabbos v'Shel Yom Hazikaron followed by<br />

Shehechiyonu.<br />

Mincha<br />

As on every Erev Shabbos, Hodu and Posach Eliyahu are recited<br />

at Mincha.<br />

Maariv<br />

It is customary to say some Tehillim before Maariv. We begin<br />

with Mizmor L'Dovid and continue with the usual Friday night<br />

Kabbolas Shabbos. In the last verse of L'cho Dodi we say the<br />

word "B'rina," as we do normally. In the Shmoneh Esrei, we<br />

include all the Shabbos insertions. Throughout the Aseres Y'mei<br />

Teshuvah (Ten Days of Repentance) various insertions are added<br />

in the Shmoneh Esrei. Should one forget to say any of these, the<br />

Shmoneh Esrei is not repeated with the exception of "Hamelech<br />

Hakadosh." <strong>The</strong>n, the following rules apply: If one realizes<br />

immediately (within the time it takes to say the three words<br />

"Shalom Olecho Rebbe") he can immediately correct himself by<br />

saying "Hamelech Hakadosh." If, however, one does not realize<br />

immediately, or has already begun to say the next Brocho, the<br />

Shmoneh Esrei must be repeated. <strong>The</strong> same applies if the<br />

Shmoneh Esrei has been completed. It then must be repeated.<br />

This law applies for all of the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah. After<br />

Shmoneh Esrei we say Vay'chulu, and Mogen Avos in which we<br />

substitute Hamelech Hakadosh for Hakel Hakadosh.<br />

After Maariv it is customary that we greet one another in the<br />

following way:<br />

To a man we say, "L'Shona Tova Tikosev V'saichosaim."<br />

To a woman we say, "L'Shona Tova Tikosaivi V'seichoseimie."<br />

Before Kiddush, Shalom Aleichem, Eishes Chayil, Mizmor<br />

L'Dovid, etc., are recited quietly. <strong>The</strong> Kiddush should be<br />

performed in the following order:<br />

Following Hamotzi the Challah is dipped into honey three times.<br />

At the beginning of the meal (after eating the Hamotzi) we take<br />

a piece of apple, dip it into honey, say "Borei P'ri Haetz" and the<br />

"Y'hi Ratzon" and then eat it. It is customary not to eat sour or<br />

bitter foods on Rosh Hashana.<br />

When bentching, R'tzei and Ya'aleh V'yavo are added. If one<br />

forgets to say Ya'aleh V'yavo during the night of Rosh Hashana,<br />

he must repeat the bentching. However, by day it is not<br />

repeated.<br />

At the conclusion of bentching (after saying "Mimarom") we<br />

insert "Horachamon Hu Yanchilaynu L'Yom Shekulo Shabbos<br />

Um'nucha", "Horachamon Hu Yanchilaynu L'Yom Shekulo Tov",<br />

and "Horachamon Hu Y'chadesh Oleinu Es Hashana Hazos L'Tova<br />

V'livracha."<br />

First Day Rosh Hashana<br />

Shabbos<br />

Tishrei 1, September 19<br />

Throughout the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah, "Shir Hamaalos" (Psalm<br />

130) is added after Yishtabach before Borechu. We recite the<br />

regular Shabbos davening with the Shabbos insertions added in<br />

the Rosh Hashana Shmoneh Esrei. Because Rosh Hashana and<br />

Yom Kippur are days of judgment, Hallel is not said. "Shir Shel<br />

Yom" and "L'Dovid Hashem Ori" are recited. <strong>The</strong>n we say "Atoh<br />

Horeisa," "Vay'hi Binsoa," "Hashem Hashem" (3 times), "Ribono<br />

Shel Olam," etc., after which two Sifrei Torah are taken out.<br />

On Shabbos the shofar is not blown; therefore it is muktzeh. We<br />

include the Shabbos insertions in the Rosh Hashana Musaf.<br />

At Kiddush, we recite quietly the Shabbos Kiddush from Mizmor<br />

L'Dovid through "Al Kein." <strong>The</strong>n we continue normally with the<br />

Rosh Hashana Kiddush:<br />

"Tiku BaChodesh," and "Borei Pri Hagofen."<br />

It is proper not to sleep during the day of Rosh Hashana, but to<br />

occupy oneself with Tehillim and Torah study.<br />

Mincha<br />

We read the Torah as on every Shabbos afternoon. Shabbos<br />

insertions are added in the Rosh Hashana Shmoneh Esrei.<br />

Tashlich is postponed until the second day.<br />

No preparations may be done for the second day before 7:54<br />

p.m., and only after saying Boruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh<br />

Lekodesh.<br />

Second Night Rosh Hashana<br />

Candle Lighting time is not before 7:54 p.m. only from a<br />

pre-existing flame, and after having said Boruch Hamavdil. <strong>The</strong><br />

Brochos “L’Hadlik Ner Shel Yom Hazikaron" and Shehechiyonu<br />

are recited.<br />

Maariv<br />

Maariv begins with Shir Hama'alos. In the Shmoneh Esrei<br />

"Vatodieinu" is added. If one forgot to say it, the Shmoneh Esrei<br />

is not repeated. However, before any "melacha" (which is<br />

forbidden on Shabbos but permitted on Yom Tov) is done,<br />

Boruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L'kodesh must be said.<br />

Kiddush<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are opinions that maintain that Shehechiyonu is not<br />

recited on the second day of Rosh Hashana. It is therefore<br />

preferable to have a new fruit present or wear a new garment at<br />

the time of candle lighting and Kiddush. <strong>The</strong>n, having the new<br />

fruit or garment in mind, one recites the Shehechiyonu. Kiddush<br />

should be performed in the following order:<br />

1. Borei P'ri Hagofen<br />

2. Birkas Kiddush<br />

3. Borei M'orei Ha'eish (at which time we only look at the candles)<br />

4. Birkas Havdala<br />

5. Shehechiyonu<br />

<strong>The</strong> Chabad custom is to eat a K'zayis (I oz.) of the fruit and make<br />

a Brocho Acharona only on the fruit (not on the wine). If one does<br />

not have a new fruit, Shehechiyonu is recited regardless. At the<br />

conclusion of bentching (after saying "Mimarom") we insert<br />

"Horachamon Hu Yanchilaynu L'Yom Shekulo Tov" and<br />

"Horachamon Hu Y'chadesh Oleinu Es Hashana Hazos L'Tova<br />

V'livracha."<br />

Second Day Rosh Hashana<br />

Sunday, Tishrei 2<br />

September 20<br />

Davening is the same as the first day excluding Shabbos<br />

insertions. Two Sifrei Torah are taken out. After Kriyas Hatorah,<br />

we prepare ourselves for the blowing of the Shofar. <strong>The</strong> entire<br />

congregation must listen to the Brochos and T'kiyas Shofar,<br />

keeping in mind to fulfill the mitzvah. "Boruch Hu Uvaruch<br />

Shemo" should not be said. Being that the Brochos of Shofar<br />

apply even to the Shofar blowing during the Musaf Shmoneh<br />

Esrei, no talking is permitted until the end of the Shofar blowing<br />

at the conclusion of Musaf (unless it pertains to the davening or<br />

the Shofar). <strong>The</strong> Shofar is blown three times during the quiet<br />

Shmoneh Esrei and three times during Chazoras Hashatz. If one is<br />

in the middle of Shmoneh Esrei while the Shofar is being<br />

sounded, he must stop and listen. At the end of davening it is<br />

customary to blow an additional 30 Kolos.<br />

Tashlich After Mincha<br />

It is traditional to go to a river or lake in which there are fish (to<br />

show that we should multiply like fish) and say Tashlich. At the<br />

close of Tashlich we shake the corners of our Talis Katan. Those<br />

unable to go to Tashlich on Rosh Hashana may do so throughout<br />

the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah.<br />

Maariv<br />

All of the Aseres Y'mei Teshuva insertions are added. "Atoh<br />

Chonantonu'" is said as on all Motzei Shabbos and Yom Tov. If<br />

one should forget "Atoh Chonantonu," the Shmoneh Esrei need<br />

not be repeated. However, before any work is done, one must say<br />

"Boruch Hamavdil Bern Kodesh L'Chol''. <strong>The</strong> same applies to those<br />

women who do not daven Maariv. It is forbidden to eat or drink<br />

before making or hearing Havdala on wine or on other<br />

permissible beverages. No B'somim or candles are used during<br />

this Havdala.<br />

Yom Tov ends at 7:53 p.m.<br />

Tzom Gedalia,<br />

Monday, Tishrei 3<br />

September 21<br />

<strong>The</strong> fast begins at 5:46 a.m.<br />

If one intends to get up early to eat, he must have that intention<br />

before going to sleep. Otherwise, it is forbidden to eat. All able<br />

men and women are obligated to fast. Pregnant and nursing<br />

women are not obligated to fast. <strong>The</strong> Chazan adds "Aneinu" in<br />

Chazoras Hashatz, Slichos and "Avinu Malkeinu" are recited. <strong>The</strong><br />

Torah is read. Only those fasting are permitted "Aliyos."<br />

Mincha<br />

Before Shmoneh Esrei the Torah is read. Three people are called<br />

up, the third being Maftir. In the Shmoneh Esrei all those that are<br />

fasting say "Aneinu" in the Brocho of Sh'ma Koleinu. If one<br />

forgets, the Shmoneh Esrei is not repeated. Tachnun and "Avinu<br />

Malkeinu" are recited.<br />

A Special Message from<br />

Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar<br />

Dear community member,<br />

We find ourselves on the threshold of Rosh Hashana and Yom<br />

Kippur, a time when even the unaffiliated are moved and<br />

reminded of their Jewish heritage. This sense of<br />

conscientiousness must awaken in us a sense of responsibility<br />

ensuring that we help those infrequently expressed feelings turn<br />

into a fully developed experience of Jewish tradition, belonging<br />

and practice.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n there’s “the lost child,” those who unfortunately are utterly<br />

distant from their Jewish roots, completely oblivious to the<br />

special energy this time of the year brings. <strong>The</strong>y require an even<br />

greater measure of our attention, emphasizing that a Jew is<br />

never detached from his Jewishness and it is never too late to<br />

gradually initiate a meaningful and personal relationship with<br />

Almighty G-d.<br />

King David writes in his book of psalms, “It is G-d who guides<br />

the steps of men.” It is by the absolute Divine Providence that<br />

you live in your specific environs and have your precise<br />

neighbors, since every soul has a singular mission to fulfill in a<br />

particular space.<br />

Before the High Holidays, I request of you to please take the<br />

time to visit three of your Jewish neighbors, families with whom<br />

you do not normally have any sort of Jewish interaction. <strong>The</strong><br />

purpose of the meeting is to ask them to consider participating<br />

in the festivities of this special upcoming month of Tishrei,<br />

encourage them to attend High Holiday services, to hear the<br />

Shofar and to generally increase and amplify their relationship<br />

with Hashem, each according to his/her respective level.<br />

I am confident that with your active participation reaching out<br />

to every Jew in the 33154 area, we could make a real difference<br />

and begin this new 5770 year in an “over the top” manner<br />

preparing for the coming of our righteous Moshiach when no<br />

Jew will be left behind.<br />

Doing this you will join the army of the Rebbe’s Shluchim who<br />

are on the front lines to prepare the world for the Ultimate<br />

Redemption.<br />

I<br />

n the traditional Tashlich ceremony, on the afternoon of Rosh<br />

Hashana (except when it is Shabbat), we go to a body of<br />

living water, and beseech G-d to forgive us for our<br />

transgressions. <strong>The</strong> prayers that we recite there (printed in nearly<br />

every Siddur) are based on a verse from Prophets: "He will again<br />

have compassion upon us; He will suppress our iniquities. And<br />

Thou will cast all their sins in the depths of the sea." (Micah 7:19)<br />

<strong>The</strong> concept of sin is one that manifests itself in the spiritual<br />

reality; the "sea" referred to in the verse above hardly refers to<br />

waters of the physical world. How can we literally cast a spiritual<br />

quality into a material entity?<br />

When "the sea", or any<br />

water, is considered<br />

metaphorically to exemplify<br />

the power to nullify beyond<br />

retrieval, as well as purify,<br />

we can understand the<br />

sort of meditative aid in our<br />

Rosh Hashana is the beginning--not only of this new<br />

year, but of all years previous.<br />

How could that be? Because on that day you are<br />

empowered to reach back into time and adjust the<br />

meaning of all that has past.<br />

True, He is the Author. But He has assigned us as<br />

editors. We adapt the storyline, transform the plot. By<br />

transforming who we are today, we rewrite our own<br />

past and author a whole new world.<br />

leave behind all of our past transgressions and personal faults,<br />

emerging cleansed in a state of renewal - and Tashlich is a<br />

dramatic way of emphasizing such aspirations.<br />

In addition, every action which we perform in this physical world<br />

has a spiritual counterpart in the Higher Worlds. By performing<br />

certain actions with the proper concentration, we actually do<br />

affect the higher, spiritual reality; this is one of the basic reasons<br />

in Jewish mystical tradition for the performance of all mitzvot.<br />

This Rosh Hashanah, may we merit to approach the life-giving<br />

source of all divine beneficence, our spiritual "stains" washed<br />

away.<br />

Para Recordarlo<br />

El Shofar en Shabat<br />

En la Torá está escrito (Bamidbar 29:1) "Un día de<br />

sonido de Shofar será para ustedes".<br />

Este año el primer día de Rosh Hashaná cae en Shabat por lo<br />

tanto no se puede tocar el Shofar. Recién el segundo día, es<br />

decir, el domingo se toca el Shofar. En la Torá está escrito<br />

(Bamidbar 29:1) "Un día de sonido de Shofar será para ustedes".<br />

En los tiempos del Santo Templo de Ierushalaim se tocaba el<br />

Shofar aun en aquellos años que Rosh Hashaná caía en Shabat.<br />

Entonces, ¿por qué hoy en día no lo hacemos, acaso no es un<br />

precepto de la Torá? Nuestros Sabios nos enseñan en el Tratado<br />

de Rosh Hashaná que, no tocamos el Shofar cuando Rosh<br />

Hashaná cae en Shabat ante la posibilidad de que alguien con la<br />

intención de cumplir con este preciado mandamiento se olvidara<br />

y transportase el Shofar en la vía pública y de esta forma esté<br />

transgrediendo el descanso del Shabat. Vemos cuán grande es la<br />

preocupación de los Sabios aún por un solo individuo que tal vez<br />

pudiera olvidar de llevar el Shofar al Shil o al Knis, y prohibieron a<br />

todos tocar el Shofar en este día. No obstante en el Templo de<br />

Ierushalaim, en donde había encargados especiales nombrados<br />

por el Gran Tribunal Rabínico a tal efecto, no se corría con ese<br />

riesgo.<br />

PROHIBICIÓN DE HACER SONAR EL SHOFAR EN SHABAT<br />

Aunque hacer Sonar el Shofar es una gran mitzvá, ya que con ello<br />

proclamamos la soberanía de di-s y también despertamos Su<br />

misericordia en favor de todos aquellos que enfrentan el juicio<br />

divino, nuestros Sabios ordenaron que si Rosh HaShana coincide<br />

con Shabat, no se debe hacer sonar el shofar.<br />

Esta ordenanza se basa en la rigurosidad de las leyes de Shabat,<br />

ya que es posible que alguien, al no contar con la experiencia<br />

nece¬saria para hacer sonar el shofar; acuda a un experto para<br />

pedirle que le enseñe o haga sonar el shofar en su lugar. De esta<br />

manera puede llegar a transgredirse la prohibición de cargar (el<br />

shofar) cuatro amot (2 mts. aprox.] dentro de un área pública o<br />

de trasladarlo de un dominio a otro. Vemos entonces que la<br />

severidad de las leyes de Shabat es tal que la mera posibilidad de<br />

que una persona las transgreda se considera más importante<br />

que hacer sonar el shofar en beneficio de toda la comunidad. Y lo<br />

mismo se aplica incluso si hay un eruv (disposición especial<br />

mediante la cual se permite cargar) o aunque no haya ningún<br />

área que se ajuste a los criterios de “dominio público”<br />

determinados por la lev de la Torá.<br />

Sin embargo, se debe señalar que el hecho de hacer sonar en<br />

Rosh HaShaná nunca queda totalmente anulado, ya que como<br />

hemos visto anteriormente, los dos días de Rosh Hazaña son<br />

considerados como un único día prolongado. Así, si el primer dia<br />

de Rosh HaShana coincide con Shabat, hacemos sonar el shofar<br />

el segundo día y se considera como si lo hubiera hecho el<br />

primero. El segundo día de Rosh HaShaná nunca puede coincidir<br />

con Shabat.<br />

El decreto de no hacer sonar el Shofar en Shabat se aplicaba sólo<br />

a aquellos lugares donde no existía un Beit Din —Tribunal<br />

Rabínico— permanente. En la época del Beit Hamikdash, cuando<br />

el Sanhedrín (Corte Suprema Rabínica) residía en Jerusalén, el<br />

Shofar se hacía sonar allí incluso cuando Rosh HaShaná coincidía<br />

con Shabat. Esto era válido también para todas las áreas que se<br />

encontraban dentro de los límites de Jerusalén. Pero en el resto<br />

de las ciudades de Israel no se hacía sonar el Shofar.<br />

Tashlij<br />

Este año 5770, se realizará el segundo día de Rosh HaShaná<br />

(domingo 20/9). Despues del rezo de la tarde, se acostumbra ir a<br />

una fuente de agua natural, río o mar y se recita el texto del<br />

Tashlij.<br />

¿Quien es como Tú, Oh Di-s, que disculpa el pecado y perdona la<br />

trasgresión? ...Tú echarás todos nuestros pecados dentro de las<br />

profundidades del mar. Y todos los pecados de Tu pueblo Israel<br />

Tú echarás en un lugar donde ellos no serán evocados ni<br />

contados, ni se pensará en ellos hasta la eternidad (plegaria de<br />

Tashlij en Rosh HaShaná).<br />

Esta plegaria es dicha a la orilla de un lago o río, y un popular<br />

concepto erróneo se ha desarrollado de que nos despojamos de<br />

nuestros pecados arrojando migas de pan dentro del agua.<br />

No se puede disponer de los pecados tan fácilmente. El único<br />

camino para deshacernos de nuestros pecados es teshuvá<br />

apropiada: sincero arrepentimiento, remordimiento, y una firme<br />

resolución de nunca repetir los malos actos.<br />

El simbolismo del tashlij está en la plegaria. Una vez que hemos<br />

hecho lo que es necesario para lograr el perdón, nuestros<br />

pecados serán arrojados lejos para que nunca sean evocados ni<br />

contados, ni se piense en ellos otra vez.<br />

Asi mismo,el agua simboliza la bondad de Di-s, los peces<br />

representan los ojos del Creador que siempre se encuentran<br />

abiertos velando por Sus creaciones. Esta costumbre tiene como<br />

objetivo, despertar la Misericordia Divina y simboliza el<br />

deshacernos de todos nuestros pecados.<br />

ROCH HACHANA 5770<br />

Le Talmud distingue 4 raché chanim:<br />

1. Le 1e nissan: Roch Hachana pour les rois et les fêtes. En effet,<br />

toutes les fêtes sont fixées par rapport au mois de la sortie<br />

d'Egypte.<br />

2. Le 1er chévat: Roch Hachana des arbres, selon Chammay. Hillel<br />

son rival propose le 15 chévat, c'est à dire, Tou Bichvat.<br />

3. Le 1er elloul: Roch Hachana lémaasser béhéma. Il s'agit de la<br />

dîme animalière.<br />

4. Le 1er tichri: Roch Hachana la chanim, lachémitot vélayovélot.<br />

Il s'agit du nouvel an des années, des années chabbatiques et de<br />

jubilés.<br />

C'est ce 4e qui nous intéresse. En fait Roch Hachana n'est qu'un<br />

roch hodech spécial, ou néoménie. Cette néoménie a été choisie<br />

pour servir de nouvel an, car ce mois de tichri est le SEPTIEME<br />

mois de l'année par rapport à nissan. C'est donc le CHABBAT de<br />

l'année. Comme il est écrit dans parachat Pinhas, "Le 1er jour du<br />

7e mois..."Bahodech hachévii"<br />

Le Talmud appelle Roch Hachana "Roch hodech léhodché<br />

hachana" = la néoménie des néoménies.<br />

Roch Hachana sert de référence pour le décompte de années<br />

juives. Nous sommes cette année en l'an 5770, "hatacha" (que tu<br />

sauves).<br />

Roch Hachana est le jour anniversaire de la création du monde.<br />

On le crie dans les prières de cette solennité. "Hayom, harat<br />

olam" = aujourd'hui, le monde est né.<br />

C'est aussi l'annniversaire de la naissance du 1er homme, Adam.<br />

Le plus important à retenir, c'est que Roch Hachana est le jour du<br />

Jugement, ou YOM HADIN.<br />

Le Talmud affirme que D.ieu fait passer chaque être humain<br />

devant son Tribunal Celeste. Trois livres sont ouverts devant lui:<br />

celui de ceux qui doivent vivre, celui de ceux qui doivent mourir<br />

et celui des sursitaires...<br />

Nous nous présentons tous pour être jugés. Nos avocats sont nos<br />

mitsvot, nos ancêtres et notre histoire. Nous rappelons à D.ieu<br />

tous les évènements qui nous sont favorables. C’est ainsi que la<br />

corne de bélier ou "chofar" rappelle la Ligature d'Isaac et Mattan<br />

Torah, le jour où Israel a accepté la Torah.<br />

Voici quelques modalités et explications sur le "SEDER" de Roch<br />

Hachana:<br />

1. Après l'office du soir, chacun adresse à l'autre les bons souhaits<br />

pour la nouvelle année juive 5770. Il faut dire:<br />

Chana Tova, tikatève (pour le masculin)<br />

tikatévi (pour le féminin)<br />

tikatévou (pour le pluriel)<br />

L'on souhaite à chacun d'être inscrit sur le livre de la VIE.<br />

Eviter le "Hag Saméyah".<br />

2. A la maison, on procède à la récitation du Kiddouch: Chabbat+<br />

Roch Hachana. Le 2e soir, il faut ajouter les bénédictions<br />

concernant samedi soir. Ne pas oublier le "Chéhéhianou"..., lors<br />

des deux soirs.<br />

3. Lavage des mains, "NETILA".<br />

4. Le "Motsi".<br />

5. Le SEDER, lui-même.<br />

- La Pomme.<br />

Prendre une pomme, la récouper en tranches que l'on trempe<br />

dans du miel. On consomme après avoir dit la bénédiction du<br />

fruit et présenter le souhait que l'année entière soit douce.<br />

Le Zohar hakadoch dit que la pomme représente la "CHEKHINA"<br />

ou Présence de D.ieu. En la consommant avec le miel, on<br />

demande à D.ieu de nous juger favorablement. Par ce geste on<br />

espère que D.ieu se manifeste plutôt par sa "Midat Harahamime",<br />

ou sa Bonté.<br />

-Le Poireau<br />

Bénédiction du fruit de la terre, puis souhaiter que les ennemis<br />

d'Israel soient "écartés" (comme le nom hébraïque du poireau,<br />

Karti.)<br />

-Les Épinards<br />

On passe directement au souhait en relation avec le nom<br />

hébraïque, Sélek.<br />

-Les Dattes<br />

Souhait en relation avec le nom des dattes, Tamar.<br />

-La Courge<br />

Encore un souhait: que D.ieu déchire notre acte d'accusation.<br />

-Le Poisson<br />

Souhaiter que nos mérites soient nombreux comme les poissons.<br />

-Tête de Mouton<br />

En souvenir de la ligature d'Isaac et du bélier sacrifié à sa place.<br />

A Peek at Recent Happenings<br />

<strong>Shul</strong> Repair, Restore and Renew<br />

Thanks to the generous outpouring of support from our<br />

community, several projects to repair and restore our shul<br />

commenced over the past few weeks. With over $350,000<br />

pledged, we are on our way to achieve our goal to raise<br />

between $550,000 and $650,000.<br />

Updates:<br />

All six gutters surrounding the dome have been replaced. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

were a major source for leaks that destroyed the Haime Library, over<br />

700 square feet of ceiling in our pre-school and caused severe<br />

damage to the main sanctuary arcways, ceilings and walls. Now<br />

that the water deluge has stopped, a special lift was brought into<br />

the main sanctuary to reach the damaged drywall.<br />

<strong>The</strong> woman’s mikvah continues to progress with the removal and<br />

replacement of the mikvah tiles; work began on framing for the new<br />

tub and shower areas. <strong>The</strong> dome waterproofing is on pace; work<br />

should start within the next two weeks once the manufacturer<br />

completes the coating specifications we ordered.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are still several key milestones we are working towards;<br />

namely replacing our 16 year old main air chiller, all rusted a/c<br />

piping, valves and framing; resurfacing of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Shul</strong>’s roof; restoration or replacement<br />

of the damaged arcway wood in the woman’s section main sanctuary; redesign of<br />

the mikvah heating systems to reduce corrosion, and repair to the rest rooms. After<br />

an exhaustive review of the condition of the apartment building, permits were filed<br />

for demolition and most tenants have already moved to new locations.<br />

As member participation grows, there are still so many of you that now have a final<br />

opportunity to help. We can only authorize the necessary work as pledges come in.<br />

This past Sunday, we had a BBQ to welcome<br />

our new youth leaders and begin the new year.<br />

Despite the wind and rain, many families<br />

showed up for an afternoon of fun. <strong>The</strong><br />

children all gladly participated in different<br />

kinds of exciting and stimulating races. From<br />

wrapping their friends in toilet paper to hula<br />

hoop races, the children all had a blast. Not<br />

only did the children compete in these games,<br />

many of the adults and Rabbis joined in for a<br />

soaked fun-filled day. Some of the men<br />

initiated their own contest, timing who could<br />

keep their head dunked into ice water for<br />

longest. Everyone really enjoyed the event and<br />

the great tasting food.<br />

A special thank you to our Youth Bochurim,<br />

Youth Girls, and volunteers, for making this<br />

event happen. We look forward to experiencing<br />

many more <strong>Shul</strong> Youth events with your family<br />
