A Message from Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar 

It is a great pleasure and honor to greet you at this 

auspicious time, together with Chani and all the Shluchim 

and Shluchos, to send our best wishes for this special New 

Year 5”770” which begins on Shabbos. 

When Rosh Hashana coincides with Shabbos the Shofar is 

only sounded in the Temple (Beit Hamikdash) but not in 

the rest of the country. This comports with the decree 

established by the great Talmudic sage Rabbah, to 

safeguard a person who might go to seek instruction on 

how to blow the Shofar from a Master and will transgress 

by inadvertently carrying the Shofar in the public domain 

on Shabbos. 

Every area of Torah, including Talmud, Midrash and 

Kabbalah, emphasizes the enormous importance and 

critical aspects of blowing Shofar, which impacts not only 

the particular requirements of Rosh Hashana, but affects 

fundamental necessities for the entire year, both on the 

most sublime spiritual levels and the most basic physical 

realms. Shofar is in fact referred to as “the Mitzvah of the 

Day”. 

Shofar represents many factors: It is a sound of trumpets 

heralding the coronation of G-d as the King of the 

Universe; It reminds G-d of our unconditional allegiance as 

the Shofar is a horn of a ram which took the place of Isaac 

on the altar; It is the sound which the Jewish People heard 

at the Sinaic Revelation and the sound that will announce 

Moshiach; It is the cry of the child pleading with his/her 

Father for salvation; and many additional aspects 

discussed by our Rabbis. 

Why and how can we deny this powerful Mitzvah because 

some ignorant person may decide to learn to properly blow 

and may carry on Shabbos? Such an improbable 

circumstance to void this key Mitzvah! 

Shabbos is G-d’s day. All Holidays including Yom Kippur 

were established to commemorate central events in the 

formation of the Nation of Israel - Pesach we were 

liberated from enslavement and born as a Nation; Shavuos 

we received the Torah, culminating our complete 

emancipation; Sukkot, we thank Hashem for surrounding 

us with Clouds of Glory during our 40 year sojourn in the 

desert; Rosh Hashana is the anniversary of our Creation; 

Yom Kippur we are given the gift of forgiveness and 

expiation. Shabbos stands alone as the day established to 

commemorate G-d’s resting on the seventh day. It is a day 

dedicated solely to our respecting G-d that makes Shabbos 

so special. 

On that day the holy energies emanating from the Holy 

One, Blessed is He, are so powerful that whatever is 

affected by Shofar blowing is duplicated and fulfilled by 

the holiness of Shabbos. 

This year, we have dual forces: Shabbos which gives us all 

the benefits and blessings of the Shofar in a tranquil 

transcendent manner; and the actual sounds of the Shofar 

during the second 24 hour period of Rosh Hashana’s 48 

hour extended day. 

May we all merit all of Hashem’s blessings, represented by 

the full Aleph Beit starting from Aleph, the acronym of 

Orah/a year of light—to Taf which is the acronym for 

Torah/a year of Torah, and every blessing which begins 

with the additional 20 letters culminating with the 

ultimate Blessing of the coming of Moshiach during 

5”770”. 

May we all be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet 

year with health and peace of mind and soul.

Celebrating Shabbos With Our Youth 

Everything you need for an "Over the Top" Shabbos experience 

Shabbos Schedule 

No longer will your children get lost amongst the crowds in Shul on 

Shabbos morning. The Shul youth has worked together to organize a 

highly educational and fun program for children and teens of all 

ages. Each Shabbos morning program involves a mix of Tefilla 

(prayer), Parsha (weekly Torah study) and general "Jewishness", 

through games, songs, and stories. Taught by our very own Shul 

Bochurim and youth girls, each child will experience Shabbos in its 

full glory; leaving with a taste of holiness and fun memories that will 

keep them coming back from week to week. A Kiddush exclusively 

for the children culminates the exciting program.

Shabbos with the Teen Boys Minyan 

Ever wonder how you can teach your son to follow with a real 

Minyan, or even run his own? The Shul youth has created the scene. 

Every Shabbos morning, each teen has his own chance to play a 

vital role in his own Shul Minyan, lead by one of our very own 

Rabbis and Youth leaders. Every week all the boys have a chance to 

act as Chazzan, Gabbai or ‘Rabbi’. This hands-on approach gives 

each teen the opportunity to experience Shul and prayer to its 

fullest, by involving them in every aspect of the Davening.

Answers for Last Week: 

1. Moshe Rabeinu gathered together all of the Jews, to bring 

them into the "Bris" on the 7th of Adar, the day he was 

going to pass away. 

2. The Mitzvah of "Hakel" happens every seventh year, during 

the Sukkot after Shmitah, when everyone gathers in the 

Beis Hamikdash. The king then reads certain parts of Sefer 

Devarim. 

3. The possuk says: "Vayelech Moshe" ("And Moshe went"). He 

was going to each Tribe to teach them the words of 

Hashem.

Each winner receives points towards a Torah Quiz prize. One 

winner per question. Each child may only answer one question. 

Answers may be given from after Mincha on Friday afternoon

We would like to emphasize that every Erev Shabbos, individuals 

should call the Eruv Hotline to make sure that the Eruv is 

operational prior to carrying on Shabbos. 

The number is 305- 866-ERUV (3788). 

The Eruv message is recorded approximately two hours prior to 

Candle lighting. Please note that the Eruv in Bal Harbour and 

Surfside does not include the path along the beach. The backs of 

the buildings form the Eruv in that section. It is forbidden to 

push strollers or carry anything on this path or beach area on 

Shabbos.

Rosh Hashana 

Erev Rosh Hashana, Friday 

Elul 29, September 18 

No Tachnun is said Erev Rosh Hashana, but it is said in the 

morning Selichos and the previous Mincha. 

No Shofar is sounded to differentiate between the obligatory 

blowing of Shofar on Rosh Hashana and the customary blowing 

in Elul; also to confuse the Satan that he should think Rosh 

Hashana has passed. 

After davening we do "Hatoras Nedorim" (annulment of vows). 

Although it is permissible to do this in front of three people, it is 

preferable to do in front of 10 (a Minyan). If one does not 

understand Hebrew, it should be said in English. 

It is proper for men to immerse in a Mikveh on Erev Rosh 

Hashana. We get dressed up in honor of Rosh Hashana, being 

certain that Hashem will bless all of us with a good and sweet 

year. 

Candle Lighting time is 7:03 p.m. 

(single girls light one candle.) 

The two Brochos are: 

L'Hadlik Ner Shel Shabbos v'Shel Yom Hazikaron followed by 

Shehechiyonu. 

Mincha 

As on every Erev Shabbos, Hodu and Posach Eliyahu are recited 

at Mincha. 

Maariv 

It is customary to say some Tehillim before Maariv. We begin 

with Mizmor L'Dovid and continue with the usual Friday night 

Kabbolas Shabbos. In the last verse of L'cho Dodi we say the 

word "B'rina," as we do normally. In the Shmoneh Esrei, we 

include all the Shabbos insertions. Throughout the Aseres Y'mei 

Teshuvah (Ten Days of Repentance) various insertions are added 

in the Shmoneh Esrei. Should one forget to say any of these, the 

Shmoneh Esrei is not repeated with the exception of "Hamelech 

Hakadosh." Then, the following rules apply: If one realizes 

immediately (within the time it takes to say the three words 

"Shalom Olecho Rebbe") he can immediately correct himself by 

saying "Hamelech Hakadosh." If, however, one does not realize 

immediately, or has already begun to say the next Brocho, the 

Shmoneh Esrei must be repeated. The same applies if the 

Shmoneh Esrei has been completed. It then must be repeated. 

This law applies for all of the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah. After 

Shmoneh Esrei we say Vay'chulu, and Mogen Avos in which we 

substitute Hamelech Hakadosh for Hakel Hakadosh. 

After Maariv it is customary that we greet one another in the 

following way: 

To a man we say, "L'Shona Tova Tikosev V'saichosaim." 

To a woman we say, "L'Shona Tova Tikosaivi V'seichoseimie." 

Before Kiddush, Shalom Aleichem, Eishes Chayil, Mizmor 

L'Dovid, etc., are recited quietly. The Kiddush should be 

performed in the following order:

Following Hamotzi the Challah is dipped into honey three times. 

At the beginning of the meal (after eating the Hamotzi) we take 

a piece of apple, dip it into honey, say "Borei P'ri Haetz" and the 

"Y'hi Ratzon" and then eat it. It is customary not to eat sour or 

bitter foods on Rosh Hashana. 

When bentching, R'tzei and Ya'aleh V'yavo are added. If one 

forgets to say Ya'aleh V'yavo during the night of Rosh Hashana, 

he must repeat the bentching. However, by day it is not 

repeated. 

At the conclusion of bentching (after saying "Mimarom") we 

insert "Horachamon Hu Yanchilaynu L'Yom Shekulo Shabbos 

Um'nucha", "Horachamon Hu Yanchilaynu L'Yom Shekulo Tov", 

and "Horachamon Hu Y'chadesh Oleinu Es Hashana Hazos L'Tova 

V'livracha." 

First Day Rosh Hashana 

Shabbos 

Tishrei 1, September 19 

Throughout the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah, "Shir Hamaalos" (Psalm 

130) is added after Yishtabach before Borechu. We recite the 

regular Shabbos davening with the Shabbos insertions added in 

the Rosh Hashana Shmoneh Esrei. Because Rosh Hashana and 

Yom Kippur are days of judgment, Hallel is not said. "Shir Shel 

Yom" and "L'Dovid Hashem Ori" are recited. Then we say "Atoh 

Horeisa," "Vay'hi Binsoa," "Hashem Hashem" (3 times), "Ribono 

Shel Olam," etc., after which two Sifrei Torah are taken out. 

On Shabbos the shofar is not blown; therefore it is muktzeh. We 

include the Shabbos insertions in the Rosh Hashana Musaf. 

At Kiddush, we recite quietly the Shabbos Kiddush from Mizmor 

L'Dovid through "Al Kein." Then we continue normally with the 

Rosh Hashana Kiddush: 

"Tiku BaChodesh," and "Borei Pri Hagofen." 

It is proper not to sleep during the day of Rosh Hashana, but to 

occupy oneself with Tehillim and Torah study. 

Mincha 

We read the Torah as on every Shabbos afternoon. Shabbos 

insertions are added in the Rosh Hashana Shmoneh Esrei. 

Tashlich is postponed until the second day. 

No preparations may be done for the second day before 7:54 

p.m., and only after saying Boruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh 

Lekodesh. 

Second Night Rosh Hashana 

Candle Lighting time is not before 7:54 p.m. only from a 

pre-existing flame, and after having said Boruch Hamavdil. The 

Brochos “L’Hadlik Ner Shel Yom Hazikaron" and Shehechiyonu 

are recited. 

Maariv 

Maariv begins with Shir Hama'alos. In the Shmoneh Esrei 

"Vatodieinu" is added. If one forgot to say it, the Shmoneh Esrei 

is not repeated. However, before any "melacha" (which is 

forbidden on Shabbos but permitted on Yom Tov) is done, 

Boruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L'kodesh must be said.

Kiddush 

There are opinions that maintain that Shehechiyonu is not 

recited on the second day of Rosh Hashana. It is therefore 

preferable to have a new fruit present or wear a new garment at 

the time of candle lighting and Kiddush. Then, having the new 

fruit or garment in mind, one recites the Shehechiyonu. Kiddush 

should be performed in the following order: 

1. Borei P'ri Hagofen 

2. Birkas Kiddush 

3. Borei M'orei Ha'eish (at which time we only look at the candles) 

4. Birkas Havdala 

5. Shehechiyonu 

The Chabad custom is to eat a K'zayis (I oz.) of the fruit and make 

a Brocho Acharona only on the fruit (not on the wine). If one does 

not have a new fruit, Shehechiyonu is recited regardless. At the 

conclusion of bentching (after saying "Mimarom") we insert 

"Horachamon Hu Yanchilaynu L'Yom Shekulo Tov" and 

"Horachamon Hu Y'chadesh Oleinu Es Hashana Hazos L'Tova 

V'livracha." 

Second Day Rosh Hashana 

Sunday, Tishrei 2 

September 20 

Davening is the same as the first day excluding Shabbos 

insertions. Two Sifrei Torah are taken out. After Kriyas Hatorah, 

we prepare ourselves for the blowing of the Shofar. The entire 

congregation must listen to the Brochos and T'kiyas Shofar, 

keeping in mind to fulfill the mitzvah. "Boruch Hu Uvaruch 

Shemo" should not be said. Being that the Brochos of Shofar 

apply even to the Shofar blowing during the Musaf Shmoneh 

Esrei, no talking is permitted until the end of the Shofar blowing 

at the conclusion of Musaf (unless it pertains to the davening or 

the Shofar). The Shofar is blown three times during the quiet 

Shmoneh Esrei and three times during Chazoras Hashatz. If one is 

in the middle of Shmoneh Esrei while the Shofar is being 

sounded, he must stop and listen. At the end of davening it is 

customary to blow an additional 30 Kolos. 

Tashlich After Mincha 

It is traditional to go to a river or lake in which there are fish (to 

show that we should multiply like fish) and say Tashlich. At the 

close of Tashlich we shake the corners of our Talis Katan. Those 

unable to go to Tashlich on Rosh Hashana may do so throughout 

the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah. 

Maariv 

All of the Aseres Y'mei Teshuva insertions are added. "Atoh 

Chonantonu'" is said as on all Motzei Shabbos and Yom Tov. If 

one should forget "Atoh Chonantonu," the Shmoneh Esrei need 

not be repeated. However, before any work is done, one must say 

"Boruch Hamavdil Bern Kodesh L'Chol''. The same applies to those 

women who do not daven Maariv. It is forbidden to eat or drink 

before making or hearing Havdala on wine or on other 

permissible beverages. No B'somim or candles are used during 

this Havdala. 

Yom Tov ends at 7:53 p.m. 


Tzom Gedalia, 

Monday, Tishrei 3 

September 21 

The fast begins at 5:46 a.m. 

If one intends to get up early to eat, he must have that intention 

before going to sleep. Otherwise, it is forbidden to eat. All able 

men and women are obligated to fast. Pregnant and nursing 

women are not obligated to fast. The Chazan adds "Aneinu" in 

Chazoras Hashatz, Slichos and "Avinu Malkeinu" are recited. The 

Torah is read. Only those fasting are permitted "Aliyos." 

Mincha 

Before Shmoneh Esrei the Torah is read. Three people are called 

up, the third being Maftir. In the Shmoneh Esrei all those that are 

fasting say "Aneinu" in the Brocho of Sh'ma Koleinu. If one 

forgets, the Shmoneh Esrei is not repeated. Tachnun and "Avinu 

Malkeinu" are recited. 

The fast concludes at 7:46 p.m. 

Throughout the Aseres Y'mei Teshuvah, "Avinu Malkeinu" is said 

during Shacharis and Mincha (excluding Shabbos or when 

Tachnun is not said).

Dear community member, 

We find ourselves on the threshold of Rosh Hashana and Yom 

Kippur, a time when even the unaffiliated are moved and 

reminded of their Jewish heritage. This sense of 

conscientiousness must awaken in us a sense of responsibility 

ensuring that we help those infrequently expressed feelings turn 

into a fully developed experience of Jewish tradition, belonging 

and practice. 

Then there’s “the lost child,” those who unfortunately are utterly 

distant from their Jewish roots, completely oblivious to the 

special energy this time of the year brings. They require an even 

greater measure of our attention, emphasizing that a Jew is 

never detached from his Jewishness and it is never too late to 

gradually initiate a meaningful and personal relationship with 

Almighty G-d. 

King David writes in his book of psalms, “It is G-d who guides 

the steps of men.” It is by the absolute Divine Providence that 

you live in your specific environs and have your precise 

neighbors, since every soul has a singular mission to fulfill in a 

particular space. 

Before the High Holidays, I request of you to please take the 

time to visit three of your Jewish neighbors, families with whom 

you do not normally have any sort of Jewish interaction. The 

purpose of the meeting is to ask them to consider participating 

in the festivities of this special upcoming month of Tishrei, 

encourage them to attend High Holiday services, to hear the 

Shofar and to generally increase and amplify their relationship 

with Hashem, each according to his/her respective level. 

I am confident that with your active participation reaching out 

to every Jew in the 33154 area, we could make a real difference 

and begin this new 5770 year in an “over the top” manner 

preparing for the coming of our righteous Moshiach when no 

Jew will be left behind. 

Doing this you will join the army of the Rebbe’s Shluchim who 

are on the front lines to prepare the world for the Ultimate 

Redemption.

Spiritual Throw-aways

I 

n the traditional Tashlich ceremony, on the afternoon of Rosh 

Hashana (except when it is Shabbat), we go to a body of 

living water, and beseech G-d to forgive us for our 

transgressions. The prayers that we recite there (printed in nearly 

every Siddur) are based on a verse from Prophets: "He will again 

have compassion upon us; He will suppress our iniquities. And 

Thou will cast all their sins in the depths of the sea." (Micah 7:19) 

The concept of sin is one that manifests itself in the spiritual 

reality; the "sea" referred to in the verse above hardly refers to 

waters of the physical world. How can we literally cast a spiritual 

quality into a material entity? 

When "the sea", or any 

water, is considered 

metaphorically to exemplify 

the power to nullify beyond 

retrieval, as well as purify, 

we can understand the 

Tashlich ceremony to be a 

sort of meditative aid in our 

process of genuine 

repentance. We wish to truly

Rosh Hashana is the beginning--not only of this new 

year, but of all years previous. 

How could that be? Because on that day you are 

empowered to reach back into time and adjust the 

meaning of all that has past. 

True, He is the Author. But He has assigned us as 

editors. We adapt the storyline, transform the plot. By 

transforming who we are today, we rewrite our own 

past and author a whole new world.

leave behind all of our past transgressions and personal faults, 

emerging cleansed in a state of renewal - and Tashlich is a 

dramatic way of emphasizing such aspirations. 

In addition, every action which we perform in this physical world 

has a spiritual counterpart in the Higher Worlds. By performing 

certain actions with the proper concentration, we actually do 

affect the higher, spiritual reality; this is one of the basic reasons 

in Jewish mystical tradition for the performance of all mitzvot. 

This Rosh Hashanah, may we merit to approach the life-giving 

source of all divine beneficence, our spiritual "stains" washed 

away.

El Shofar en Shabat 

En la Torá está escrito (Bamidbar 29:1) "Un día de 

sonido de Shofar será para ustedes". 

Este año el primer día de Rosh Hashaná cae en Shabat por lo 

tanto no se puede tocar el Shofar. Recién el segundo día, es 

decir, el domingo se toca el Shofar. En la Torá está escrito 

(Bamidbar 29:1) "Un día de sonido de Shofar será para ustedes". 

En los tiempos del Santo Templo de Ierushalaim se tocaba el 

Shofar aun en aquellos años que Rosh Hashaná caía en Shabat. 

Entonces, ¿por qué hoy en día no lo hacemos, acaso no es un 

precepto de la Torá? Nuestros Sabios nos enseñan en el Tratado 

de Rosh Hashaná que, no tocamos el Shofar cuando Rosh 

Hashaná cae en Shabat ante la posibilidad de que alguien con la 

intención de cumplir con este preciado mandamiento se olvidara 

y transportase el Shofar en la vía pública y de esta forma esté 

transgrediendo el descanso del Shabat. Vemos cuán grande es la 

preocupación de los Sabios aún por un solo individuo que tal vez 

pudiera olvidar de llevar el Shofar al Shil o al Knis, y prohibieron a 

todos tocar el Shofar en este día. No obstante en el Templo de 

Ierushalaim, en donde había encargados especiales nombrados 

por el Gran Tribunal Rabínico a tal efecto, no se corría con ese 

riesgo. 

PROHIBICIÓN DE HACER SONAR EL SHOFAR EN SHABAT 

Aunque hacer Sonar el Shofar es una gran mitzvá, ya que con ello 

proclamamos la soberanía de di-s y también despertamos Su 

misericordia en favor de todos aquellos que enfrentan el juicio 

divino, nuestros Sabios ordenaron que si Rosh HaShana coincide 

con Shabat, no se debe hacer sonar el shofar. 

Esta ordenanza se basa en la rigurosidad de las leyes de Shabat, 

ya que es posible que alguien, al no contar con la experiencia 

nece¬saria para hacer sonar el shofar; acuda a un experto para 

pedirle que le enseñe o haga sonar el shofar en su lugar. De esta 

manera puede llegar a transgredirse la prohibición de cargar (el 

shofar) cuatro amot (2 mts. aprox.] dentro de un área pública o 

de trasladarlo de un dominio a otro. Vemos entonces que la 

severidad de las leyes de Shabat es tal que la mera posibilidad de 

que una persona las transgreda se considera más importante 

que hacer sonar el shofar en beneficio de toda la comunidad. Y lo 

mismo se aplica incluso si hay un eruv (disposición especial 

mediante la cual se permite cargar) o aunque no haya ningún 

área que se ajuste a los criterios de “dominio público” 

determinados por la lev de la Torá. 

Sin embargo, se debe señalar que el hecho de hacer sonar en 

Rosh HaShaná nunca queda totalmente anulado, ya que como 

hemos visto anteriormente, los dos días de Rosh Hazaña son 

considerados como un único día prolongado. Así, si el primer dia 

de Rosh HaShana coincide con Shabat, hacemos sonar el shofar 

el segundo día y se considera como si lo hubiera hecho el 

primero. El segundo día de Rosh HaShaná nunca puede coincidir 

con Shabat. 

El decreto de no hacer sonar el Shofar en Shabat se aplicaba sólo 

a aquellos lugares donde no existía un Beit Din —Tribunal 

Rabínico— permanente. En la época del Beit Hamikdash, cuando 

el Sanhedrín (Corte Suprema Rabínica) residía en Jerusalén, el 

Shofar se hacía sonar allí incluso cuando Rosh HaShaná coincidía

con Shabat. Esto era válido también para todas las áreas que se 

encontraban dentro de los límites de Jerusalén. Pero en el resto 

de las ciudades de Israel no se hacía sonar el Shofar. 

Tashlij 

Este año 5770, se realizará el segundo día de Rosh HaShaná 

(domingo 20/9). Despues del rezo de la tarde, se acostumbra ir a 

una fuente de agua natural, río o mar y se recita el texto del 

Tashlij. 

¿Quien es como Tú, Oh Di-s, que disculpa el pecado y perdona la 

trasgresión? ...Tú echarás todos nuestros pecados dentro de las 

profundidades del mar. Y todos los pecados de Tu pueblo Israel 

Tú echarás en un lugar donde ellos no serán evocados ni 

contados, ni se pensará en ellos hasta la eternidad (plegaria de 

Tashlij en Rosh HaShaná). 

Esta plegaria es dicha a la orilla de un lago o río, y un popular 

concepto erróneo se ha desarrollado de que nos despojamos de 

nuestros pecados arrojando migas de pan dentro del agua. 

No se puede disponer de los pecados tan fácilmente. El único 

camino para deshacernos de nuestros pecados es teshuvá 

apropiada: sincero arrepentimiento, remordimiento, y una firme 

resolución de nunca repetir los malos actos. 

El simbolismo del tashlij está en la plegaria. Una vez que hemos 

hecho lo que es necesario para lograr el perdón, nuestros 

pecados serán arrojados lejos para que nunca sean evocados ni 

contados, ni se piense en ellos otra vez. 

Asi mismo,el agua simboliza la bondad de Di-s, los peces 

representan los ojos del Creador que siempre se encuentran 

abiertos velando por Sus creaciones. Esta costumbre tiene como 

objetivo, despertar la Misericordia Divina y simboliza el 

deshacernos de todos nuestros pecados.

ROCH HACHANA 5770 

Le Talmud distingue 4 raché chanim: 

1. Le 1e nissan: Roch Hachana pour les rois et les fêtes. En effet, 

toutes les fêtes sont fixées par rapport au mois de la sortie 

d'Egypte. 

2. Le 1er chévat: Roch Hachana des arbres, selon Chammay. Hillel 

son rival propose le 15 chévat, c'est à dire, Tou Bichvat. 

3. Le 1er elloul: Roch Hachana lémaasser béhéma. Il s'agit de la 

dîme animalière. 

4. Le 1er tichri: Roch Hachana la chanim, lachémitot vélayovélot. 

Il s'agit du nouvel an des années, des années chabbatiques et de 

jubilés. 

C'est ce 4e qui nous intéresse. En fait Roch Hachana n'est qu'un 

roch hodech spécial, ou néoménie. Cette néoménie a été choisie 

pour servir de nouvel an, car ce mois de tichri est le SEPTIEME 

mois de l'année par rapport à nissan. C'est donc le CHABBAT de 

l'année. Comme il est écrit dans parachat Pinhas, "Le 1er jour du 

7e mois..."Bahodech hachévii" 

Le Talmud appelle Roch Hachana "Roch hodech léhodché 

hachana" = la néoménie des néoménies. 

Roch Hachana sert de référence pour le décompte de années 

juives. Nous sommes cette année en l'an 5770, "hatacha" (que tu 

sauves). 

Roch Hachana est le jour anniversaire de la création du monde. 

On le crie dans les prières de cette solennité. "Hayom, harat 

olam" = aujourd'hui, le monde est né. 

C'est aussi l'annniversaire de la naissance du 1er homme, Adam. 

Le plus important à retenir, c'est que Roch Hachana est le jour du 

Jugement, ou YOM HADIN. 

Le Talmud affirme que D.ieu fait passer chaque être humain 

devant son Tribunal Celeste. Trois livres sont ouverts devant lui: 

celui de ceux qui doivent vivre, celui de ceux qui doivent mourir 

et celui des sursitaires... 

Nous nous présentons tous pour être jugés. Nos avocats sont nos 

mitsvot, nos ancêtres et notre histoire. Nous rappelons à D.ieu 

tous les évènements qui nous sont favorables. C’est ainsi que la 

corne de bélier ou "chofar" rappelle la Ligature d'Isaac et Mattan 

Torah, le jour où Israel a accepté la Torah. 

Voici quelques modalités et explications sur le "SEDER" de Roch 

Hachana: 

1. Après l'office du soir, chacun adresse à l'autre les bons souhaits 

pour la nouvelle année juive 5770. Il faut dire: 

Chana Tova, tikatève (pour le masculin) 

tikatévi (pour le féminin) 

tikatévou (pour le pluriel) 

L'on souhaite à chacun d'être inscrit sur le livre de la VIE. 

Eviter le "Hag Saméyah". 

2. A la maison, on procède à la récitation du Kiddouch: Chabbat+ 

Roch Hachana. Le 2e soir, il faut ajouter les bénédictions 

concernant samedi soir. Ne pas oublier le "Chéhéhianou"..., lors 

des deux soirs. 

3. Lavage des mains, "NETILA". 

4. Le "Motsi". 

5. Le SEDER, lui-même. 

- La Pomme. 

Prendre une pomme, la récouper en tranches que l'on trempe 

dans du miel. On consomme après avoir dit la bénédiction du 

fruit et présenter le souhait que l'année entière soit douce. 

Le Zohar hakadoch dit que la pomme représente la "CHEKHINA" 

ou Présence de D.ieu. En la consommant avec le miel, on 

demande à D.ieu de nous juger favorablement. Par ce geste on 

espère que D.ieu se manifeste plutôt par sa "Midat Harahamime", 

ou sa Bonté. 

-Le Poireau 

Bénédiction du fruit de la terre, puis souhaiter que les ennemis 

d'Israel soient "écartés" (comme le nom hébraïque du poireau, 

Karti.) 

-Les Épinards 

On passe directement au souhait en relation avec le nom 

hébraïque, Sélek. 

-Les Dattes 

Souhait en relation avec le nom des dattes, Tamar. 

-La Courge 

Encore un souhait: que D.ieu déchire notre acte d'accusation. 

-Le Poisson 

Souhaiter que nos mérites soient nombreux comme les poissons. 

-Tête de Mouton 

En souvenir de la ligature d'Isaac et du bélier sacrifié à sa place. 

Souhait d'être toujours à la tête.

Shul Repair, Restore and Renew 

Thanks to the generous outpouring of support from our 

community, several projects to repair and restore our shul 

commenced over the past few weeks. With over $350,000 

pledged, we are on our way to achieve our goal to raise 

between $550,000 and $650,000. 

Updates: 

All six gutters surrounding the dome have been replaced. These 

were a major source for leaks that destroyed the Haime Library, over 

700 square feet of ceiling in our pre-school and caused severe 

damage to the main sanctuary arcways, ceilings and walls. Now 

that the water deluge has stopped, a special lift was brought into 

the main sanctuary to reach the damaged drywall. 

The woman’s mikvah continues to progress with the removal and 

replacement of the mikvah tiles; work began on framing for the new 

tub and shower areas. The dome waterproofing is on pace; work 

should start within the next two weeks once the manufacturer 

completes the coating specifications we ordered. 

There are still several key milestones we are working towards; 

namely replacing our 16 year old main air chiller, all rusted a/c 

piping, valves and framing; resurfacing of The Shul’s roof; restoration or replacement 

of the damaged arcway wood in the woman’s section main sanctuary; redesign of 

the mikvah heating systems to reduce corrosion, and repair to the rest rooms. After 

an exhaustive review of the condition of the apartment building, permits were filed 

for demolition and most tenants have already moved to new locations. 

As member participation grows, there are still so many of you that now have a final 

opportunity to help. We can only authorize the necessary work as pledges come in.

This past Sunday, we had a BBQ to welcome 

our new youth leaders and begin the new year. 

Despite the wind and rain, many families 

showed up for an afternoon of fun. The 

children all gladly participated in different 

kinds of exciting and stimulating races. From 

wrapping their friends in toilet paper to hula 

hoop races, the children all had a blast. Not 

only did the children compete in these games, 

many of the adults and Rabbis joined in for a 

soaked fun-filled day. Some of the men 

initiated their own contest, timing who could 

keep their head dunked into ice water for 

longest. Everyone really enjoyed the event and 

the great tasting food. 

A special thank you to our Youth Bochurim, 

Youth Girls, and volunteers, for making this 

event happen. We look forward to experiencing 

many more Shul Youth events with your family 

this year!
