Reception was at Beverly Woods Restaurant

Pierson is having a weight reducing program.
The heaviest will patrol the parks
on bicycles. For instance Hogan, O'Brien,
McSweeney, and Chambers . .. These
brave men were awarded Department
Commendations: Carr, Meintus, Eure,
Lewis. Staszak was awarded two, also
Youth Ofcr. Cochie . .. We now have a
new jeep. Cadet Pieffer cares for "Dear",
the Ex-Marine jeep .. . CongraWlations
to Stanley Kucharski and Jean. We wish
them much happiness.

10TH DISTRICT: We recently lost two of
our officers. Our first loss was John
Moroney who worked as Ass't. Sec'y.
John died suddenly after a long illness,
which shocked everyone. Everyone felt
he was recovering and would soon return
to work. John came to 10 from the
7th Dist. and was only 36 years old. He
had been a policeman for 12 years, and
lived with his mother. John, as sick as
he was, always appeared cheerful and
happy while he was at work. He had a
wonderful attitude and always a kind
word for everyone. He will be missed by
all of us .. . The other untimely death
was that of Ben Wiechert. The term
"Gentle Ben" certainly applied to him.
Ben was one of the Ass't. Desk Sgts.
for many years, and was looking for·
ward to retiring in a few years. He has
two sons, one of them a cadet at Area
# 3. Both boys are gentlemen, just like

their Dad. Ben was very proud of his
two boys and when you got him into a
conversation, he would talk about his
gun collection. Ben, like John, always
had a kind word for everyone. Both were
gentlemen of the highest caliber. May
they rest in peace.

Glad to see Lt. Lappe is back on his
feet after being TIED up with fractured
ribs. Our boys who were shot on Lake
St. are all doing fine. Our guys at 13

have the team this year, so watch out

17TH DISTRICT: Vacation spots have
been the topic of conversation here and
as this reporter just recently returned
from a trip to sunny Florida, it is a very
interesting subject for discussion. Sgt.
Tom Fergus flew to Hawaii where he
and his lovely wife did a little Island
hoppi ng. (I think that is a new dance
over there). Sec'y George Wilson is in
St. Petersburg on a time-due furlough.
Cmdr. Hayes took a well-earned vacation
and had the pleasure of seeing the
Mets win the World Series. Lt. Ed Carrigan
and Mrs. spent a few weeks in
Colorado. Everyone seems to have improved
since returning to the fold. Other
members have been discussing trips but
I don't think they were talking about the
traveling kind . . . Our Crossing Guards
made quite an impressive showing at
their uniform inspection_ They are the
finest group of Crossing Guards in the
Department and we are proud of them.

18TH DISTRICT: Salute to Sgt. Jim
Clark's Lake Shore Lions. Also to Capt.
Cloherty's watch for the swift action
during the SDS disturbance . .. All were
present to help Lt. James Reilly celebrate

disciplinarian, his men respect his cool
intelligent methods under gunfire or in
