INDEX BY SUBJECTS AND NAMES The Index by Subjects and Names provides access by (1) major subject matter of the documents; (2) names of geographic locations; (3) names of persons authoring or originating the documents. Entries in this index consist of the following structural elements: • terms; • titles; • date; • accession number assigned to each indexed document and used to identify that document in the Bibliography of Documents and the microfilm collection; • cross references {see and see also). As documents in this collection are organized first by individual countries and within country by folders containing documents closely related by date and topic, subject index access for this collection is to the key themes at the folder level. Personal name index access for authors and significant in- dividuals has been provided to individual documents. Subject Terms and Cross-References Subject terms and cross-references used in the Index by Subjects and Names are based upon an extensively cross-referenced hierarchical indexing vocabulary developed specifically to han- dle the National Security File materials. When indexing an item to which a hierarchy of these terms might apply, we select the most specific applicable term or terms, and usually do not also index to the broader or narrower referencing terms that, while relevant, do not reflect as well the specific topic of discussion. For example, a document focusing specifically on "Troop movements" would not also be indexed to the more general term "Military forces." It is important, therefore, to pursue relevant see also references under a term, as these generally list additional documents not identified under the broader term. See references direct the user from ter- minology that has not been used in our controlled vocabulary thesaurus to the specific form of the subject term we have used. Personal Names Names of all persons who are the subject of significant discussion within the documents are included in the Index by Subjects and Names along with names of persons who author or originate documents. Wherever possible, an indication of the position/positions held by key persons has been included in the Index, immediate- ly following the person's name. Alphabetization and Sorting of References Index terms are alphabetized on a word-by-word and letter-by- letter basis, observing spaces but ignoring punctuation. Thus, LBJ National Security Files, United Nations, 1963-1969 "Air transport" precedes "Aircraft." Therefore, it is important to know where there are word breaks in a term. INDEX BY DOCUMENT NUMBERS This index lists cable and other numbers assigned to the document by the originating organization. Since many documents have more than one originating source number, only the prin- cipal reference numbers of the document have been selected for inclusion in the Index by Document Numbers. Index entries consist of the document numbers followed by the title of the document, its date, and the accession number. CHRONOLOGICAL LIST OF DOCUMENTS This index lists the title of each document by the date on which the document was generated, from the earliest to the most recent. Document titles under each date are listed alphabetically, followed by the document accession number. WITHDRAWALS University Publications of America (UPA) has microfilmed, in their entirety, all NSF "Country Files" documents that were declassified, sanitized, or unclassified as of February 1987. In its microfilming, UPA has maintained the geographic breakdowns designated by the staff of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library. Many individual documents and entire folders of documents remain classified or unprocessed; UPA has therefore included in its NSF microfilm publications the "Docu- ment Withdrawal Sheets" for each folder. These withdrawal sheets itemize documents that have been withdrawn from the folders, due to either national security or privacy restrictions, by the staff of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library. UPA intends to pubUsh microfilm supplements containing documents from the NSF "Country Files" that become declassified or sanitized in the future.
