6.6 Media Filtration Systems<br />

<strong>The</strong>se treatment control devices typically consist <strong>of</strong> two chambers, a pretreatment settling basin<br />

and a filter bed filled with sand or some other absorptive filtering media. Large particles<br />

transported in storm water run<strong>of</strong>f settle in the pretreatment basin while finer particles and<br />

associated pollutants are removed by filtering through the media in the second chamber. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

are a number <strong>of</strong> design variations including the surface or Austin sand filter and the<br />

underground, DC or Delaware sand filter. When used with a sand filter bed, porous pavement<br />

can also be considered a media filtration system.<br />
