President’s Report! - XÜÇáà fàtwxÜ
in ganz kurzer Rückblick auf die
E Veranstaltungen der letzten zwei
Monate: Wie nicht anders erwartet erwies
sich der Silvesterball - genau wie
vorhergesagt wurde als großer Erfolg.
Eintrittskarten wurden nur bis zu einer
gewissen Zahl verkauft, damit Jedermann
ausreichend Bewegungsfreiheit hatte. Ein
Willkommensgruß und ein Glas Sekt brachten
unsere Mitglieder und Gäste sofort in die
richtige Stimmung. Neben Hors d’oeuvres
wurde zuerst ein komplettes Abendessen mit
Salat und anschließend Kaffee und
Schokolade serviert. Ein kaltes Buffet für alle
folgte zwischen 22 und 23 Uhr. Die
Evergreens sorgten für angenehme
Tanzmusik und wie immer ging so ein
herrlicher Abend zu schnell vorbei.
Ich möchte mich hiermit bei Hannelore und
Dieter Johle für die Geldspende an diesem
Abend für unseren Klub bedanken. Auch Olf
Rudolph gebührt ein Dankeschön für die
erstklassigen Bilder von Silvester. (weiter auf
Volume 2, Issue 2
et us just reflect on the past events of
L the last two months. As expected, our
New Year’s Ball was a complete success. We
only sold a certain amount of tickets to make
it as comfortable as possible for everyone. A
welcome with a glass of champagne to members
and guests was the first step to bring
everyone in that New Year’s spirit. The food
consisted of hors d’oeuvres, followed by a
full course dinner, coffee and chocolate for
dessert and a cold buffet around 10:30 for
everyone in attendance. The music by the
‘Evergreens’ made sure the dance floor was
always occupied with their selection of dance
music. A beautiful evening enjoyed by everyone!
I would like to thank our members Hannelore
and Dieter Johle for their cash donation
which was presented to me on that evening.
Also our thanks to Olaf Rudolph for the
wonderful pictures he took during the festivities
- they may be seen on our website.
Was uns am meisten an diesem Abend auffiel,
Haus, aber trotzdem vermissten wir einige der alten Garde;
Stimmung. (weiter>)
Next, the Karneval dance. This was a dance which sure
reminded us of the old times when people were there early in
the evening just to claim a comfortable place to sit. A full
house with many representatives of other Karneval groups
from Ontario were present. One of the highlights was when
our Elferrat marched in under the music of the Euro
Connection. Performances by our own dancers, from the tots
to the seniors, and from our guests were well appreciated by
everyone in attendance. Tom Henninger, as master of
ceremonies, did an excellent job as always; especially that
part in German. Sometimes it is not so easy to find the right
wording in explaining how much work it takes to present us
with an evening like that. Holly Henninger and all her
volunteers deserve our gratitude with their dedication to the
K.G. Loreley. We, the board of directors, are well aware how
much sacrifice and hard work it takes to organize such an
event. When you see the results, it makes you very proud to
be a member of such a glorious team. (More in K.G. report)
A very well attended Valentine’s dance, and a 14 piece swing
band with vocalist Tanya Weiss was enough reason to put a
smile on everyone’s face that helped organize that dance. Of
course an excellent dinner, prepared by chef Trevor and his
staff was also appreciated. Here again, we have to praise
Gerda and her helper who have done a terrific job with the
decorating of our hall--what a marvelous idea! Also a delight
for everyone who loves to dance, music from way back to our
present time. Some of our guests were first-timers and really
praised our club, and most of all, the friendly atmosphere. But
then again, with our caliber of board members what else
would you expect!
At the last general meeting our by-laws were discussed. Times
have changed over the years and we thought they should be
updated. I arranged a meeting with our lawyer Josef
Neubauer, and the following sections and paragraphs have
been changed. (cont’d)
I would urge every member to cut this part out of our paper
and staple it to their copy of the by-laws. We could have
printed new booklets but have refrained for the time being
because of the expense.
The last concern (I hope) we had from the health inspector
the help of Jakob Fischer and Joe Friedrich. The counter had
to be covered from the outside for health reasons.
Diese können Sie ausschneiden und im Gesetzbuch ( By- Law
) anheften.
President’s Report Cont’d from pg. 7
April. Man könnte wieder dieselben Worte
verbringen. (weiter>)
I’m quite sure every concern has now been addressed and
we are well prepared for the next inspection by the
department. I must emphasize again how thankful we
should be to the rifle club for all their work. With wages
nowadays you not need to be a mathematician to figure out
how much money they have saved us over time. Hopefully
we can count on their help for the future, and still enjoy
many of our activities at our club. You also deserve a well
earned rest to concentrate more on your own activities as
far as shooting is concerned.
Our next general meeting is just around the corner--April 9 th .
Again, I could use the same phrase as in previous years and
remind everyone to be in attendance, but those are only
words. Everyone should ask the question, why, and for what
reason can I not be part of the meeting? Many of our
members probably think, oh everything is fine, and we don’t
need to worry, but think again, hard times are ahead of us.
Naturally we all are getting older, and have lost a bit of our
energy, but this should not be an excuse to refrain yourself
from everything. Participation and involvement is one of the
reasons to prolong your life span. To reduce your activities
to a point of complete negligence, is the first step to
everyone’s downfall. Just remember the good times we all
shared at Club Loreley and hopefully will share for a long
time to come. Our last New Year’s party comes to my mind.
Not much like in earlier years when we celebrated to the
wee hours and often went to a private party after that. No,
this was a party with good food, dance, and plenty of
conversation on your own table and somewhere else with
many friends and guests. A party, just the way it should be
in our time, and hopefully will continue. These are some of
the reasons why we should all be in attendance at our
general meeting, and be informed, and also have your own
opinions expressed. We all have to do our share to expand
the good times at Club Loreley.
Now to our events for the following month. It all starts on
Saturday March 4 th with the Miss Loreley and Mini Miss
Pageant. The K.G. Loreley and youth dancers will be in
charge of that event (see flyer). On Saturday March 18 th , the
Loreley singes have something different on their agenda. In
addition to entertainment by a guest’s choir’s and their own
group, they also have a band hired for dance music for that
evening. For sure a night that will draw many members and
guests. Then on April the 9 th , our general meeting with
election of a new board. Note all skat players and guests:
our spring prize skat on Saturday April 15 th at 11 a.m. Please
submit your name to the list, and also pay your $25.00 fee
to Wanda in the members’ lounge. (cont’d)
(Siehe Reklame).
Bitte früh genug in
Gniewek vom Club Loreley.
President’s Report Cont’d from pg. 8
Kinorama again on Sunday April 16 th (see flyer).
One of our biggest events--“Heimatabend”—is on
Saturday April 22th with host, Christel Petrowski
and Peter Stenz. This is an evening that will see
many of our members and guests from out of
town. It should not be missed under any
circumstance.
It might be wise to mention the events for the first
week in May in case the paper does not arrive in
time. On May 6 th the Loreley singers’ “rummage
and bake sale” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. On that
evening, the Loreley Youth Dancers will be holding
their benefit dance with the “Euro Connection” as
band. By being in attendance, we all show our
support for that wonderful group (see flyer). The
next day, May 7 th , Club Loreley’s famous Mothers’
Day brunch. Please get your tickets early in our
Members’ Lounge.
Again, it would be wise to remember those dates
and mark them down, due to the fact our paper will
only appear every two months.
We, the board were pleasantly surprised by a visit
from Irene Lipski at our Board meeting on Feb. 1 st .
She presented us on behalf of Monika Mehler and
the Lady’s auxiliary with a check of $500.00 for
Club Loreley. Needless to say our treasurer-without
hesitation--accepted this generous
donation. Our thanks to Monika and the wonderful
ladies.
Finally, a sad note. Our former chef, Wojciech
Gniewek, has passed away this week due to a heart
attack. This was truly shocking news to me. Chef
Wojciech was a kind, caring, hard working family
man and an expert in his field. He provided our
club with seamless, memorable, and exquisite
cuisine. He was a friend to many of us, and he will
be missed. On behalf of our club I would like to
extend our condolences to his family and friends.
That concludes my report for this edition. See all of
you at the general meeting, with the best to you,
tern durch die Lüfte”
“Wiarton Willie” did not see his shadow on February 2nd, and as we all know,
that promises an early spring. We can only hope he is right.
In any case, the “Loreley Singers” will bring Spring to our club on Saturday
March 18th with the annual “Salute to Spring Concert”. The visiting Choirs
will be: the “Lyra Choir” from London, the “Harmonie Choir” from Toronto,
and maybe the “Hansa Choir” from Brampton and the “Harfentöne Choir”
from Toronto.
Never mind “Wiarton Willie”, when all these choirs let their voices be heard,
sunshine will be in our hearts and flowers will be blooming! And we can then
say along with Eduard Mörike… “Frühling läßt sein blaues Band wieder flat-
Before all this takes place however, the “Loreley Singers” will be visiting with the “Hansa Choir” in Brampton on
March 4 th to celebrate their Springfest. And that should be lots of fun too. On April 1st the Singers are on the road
again. This time they will be visiting the “Transylvanian Choir” in Kitchener.
By now all of you have read our newspaper and you all know, that we celebrated “Valentine’s Day” at our Club on
February 11 th . Yours truly with best pal Joe attended. And I must say, once again it was another glorious evening at
our club. The big hall was wonderfully decorated, every lady was welcomed with a sweet yellow rose, the food was
very good and so tasteful, and the band… There is nothing nicer than to dance to the music of a “Big Band Swing
Orchestra”!!!! At least our generation feels that way. And even the dance floor was nice and “danceable”. What a
wonderful evening to beat the winter blaaaahs…
And here is a reminder for all the “Loreley Singers”. Monday, March 6th will be the annual Membership meeting
from 3.30 p.m to 5.00p.m. And as you all know, we have to vote for a new executive!! So please do not forget!!!!
Mark this date on your calendar.
And that is that for today………
Don’t forget to sing and keep a happy smile.
ith the passing of February, we’re striving forward to spring with big steps. So far we’ve been
W spoiled all winter with extremely mild weather and with very little snow. Now whether this is
good or bad for the environment I can’t tell, but I hope that March won’t surprise us with a kick in the
butt, by setting us in a deep freeze.
As you all know, this is going to be the last news letter before the club’s ‘Heimatabend’ on April 22nd;
and therefore it will also be the last chance for anyone who wants to be on the performer list to inform
us as soon as possible about their intention. Don’t wait up to the last minute if you decide to be part of
the program. Once the program is done it is a heck of a job to reschedule everything over again.
In case you tell someone else to get in contact with us, please give us that person’s phone number too, so that I can get in
contact personally with that particular person at a later time. Believe me I spend many hours on the internet just searching
for the right phone numbers of people who’ve signed up.
We have already sent flyers out to the community, in malls and to our friends. Now it is up to all members, their families and
friends the spread the word. We hope that we can count on each and everyone again this year to support this wonderful tradition
of our heritage. We put is a lot of hard work and dedication into this project and hope that it will be profitable for the
club and enjoyable for our audience.
Once again we will have some wonderful performers this year who will spend their time and energy to entertain you. Just
think about it, all this is free of charge to anyone attending the Heimatabend. Now where else in town can you find such bargain?
Only in our Club Loreley, because we‘re a big family, and families are supposed to support each other!
To make this evening even more exciting there will be many wonderful prizes just waiting to be won at our draw; and for
your convenience this year we’ll sell only single colour tickets, no more multiple colours. I believe that this will speed up the
whole process of our raffle. We noticed that many of our guests had a hard time distinguishing between pink, orange or
beige, especially when the light was turned down. The single colour tickets will help to solve this problem. We also intend to
mark the prizes with numbers, and hope that this too will speed up the whole procedure.
On January 21st our singers visited and performed at Club Treff in Cobourg and we expect some of their members to visit us
too on April 22nd.
Many of us attended Ilse Eilert’s funeral on January 23rd. Ilse was a very special and dear friend of mine; she also was a club
member and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She definitely will be missed by many of us.
A donation from us Heimatsänger in the amount of $100.00 was given to the club for a new printer cartridge.
The following heart-warming story was given to me by one of our members. This story speaks for itself; it actually brought
tears to my eyes when I read it... Today I’d like to share this story with you on the next page of my report. Hope to see you
all on Heimatabend! (cont’d >>)
A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read, ” Puppies for sale”.
The sign had a way of attracting children. Soon a little boy appeared at the sign and asked, “How much
are you gonna sell those puppies for?”
The store owner replied, “Anywhere from $30-$50. The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out
some change. “ I have $2,37, can I look at them ?”
The store owner smiled and whistled. Out of his kennel came a dog named Lady, running down the
aisle of his store followed by five little puppies. One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately
the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy. He asked,” What’s wrong with this little
dog?” The man explained that when the puppy was born the Vet said that this puppy had a bad hip
socket and would limp for the rest of his life.
The little boy got really exited and said,” That’s the puppy I want to buy!”
The man replied,“ No, you don’t want to buy this little dog. If you really want him I’ll give him to you.”
The little boy got upset. He looked straight into the man’s eyes and said,” I don’t want you to give him
to me. He is worth every bit as much as the other dogs and I’ll pay the full price. In fact I will give you
$2,37 now and 50cents every month until I have him paid for.”
The man countered, “You really don’t want to buy this puppy son. He is never gonna be able to run,
jump and play like other puppies.” The little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a
badly twisted left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up to the man and said,” Well, I don’t
run so well myself and the little puppy will need someone who understands.”
The man was now biting his bottom lip. Tears welled up in his eyes… Hi smiled and said,” Son, I hope
and pray that each and everyone of these puppies will have an owner such as you.”
In life it doesn’t matter who you are,
but where someone appreciates you
for what you are,
accepts you and loves you
unconditionally.
A friend is one who walks in
when the rest of the world
walks away!
This I a wonderful story and I hope all of us have learnt a little bit from it. Until next time take care,
and don’t forget to smile.
iebe Mitglieder! L
Bertha’s Muscle Car
his is the true story of two very famous names, and about a name that should be more
T famous: Bertha -- the mother of the road trip.
By reliable estimates, there have been some 10,000 different makes of automobiles brought
forth over the last 120 years of motoring history. In the United States alone, there have been
around 3000 makes.
Most of these makes long ago faded into automotive history. Some names still jog the memory -
- Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Packard, Nash, Cord, Hudson, Duesenberg, to name a few.
Others are lost in the mists of time -- Earl, Kearns, Metz, Standard, Unic, Crouch, Enfield-Allday,
American-Electric, John O’Gaunt, and two of my French favorites, the ASS (yes, folks, the ASS) and, for the timid motorist in the early
days, the Hurtu. (The French, of course, did not pronounce it “hurt you,” and the car stayed in business from 1896 to 1929.)
But two motoring names -- both German -- that were instrumental to the birth of the automobile remain very much in the active vocabulary
of the automobile industry today: Benz and Daimler.
Early automotive archaeology uncovers many pioneers -- Cugnot, Trevithick, Serpollet, Bouton, and the Austrian eccentric, Siegfried
Marcus, for instance; but the real beginning of practical production automobiles goes back to Germany 120 years ago and the two
names mentioned above.
Indeed, it was exactly 120 years ago this week (Jan 29th) that Karl Benz applied to the German government for a patent on his
three-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.
Patent number 37435 was issued in November of the same year and Benz & Co.’s “Patent-Motorwagen” became the real father of all
motorcars. While other engineers, tinkerers and adventurers were basically trying to mate an engine to a horse-drawn wagon, Benz,
the son of a railroad engine driver, set out to design a new piece of mobile technology, dedicated from the ground up for selfpropulsion.
Although it may have looked carriage-like at first sight, largely because of its wheels, it was a unique vehicle incorporating many cutting
edge achievements of the industrial age -- a tubular steel frame, a water-cooled radiator, electric ignition and, of course, a single
cylinder four-stroke engine.
But Benz was a bit of a slow burner. His business backers were reportedly furious at his continued fiddling and failure to market his
creation. In the two years after the patent was issued, he built only three cars. His wife, Bertha Ringer Benz, was not pleased. She
believed in her husband and, more importantly, believed there was a lot more to this car thing than he envisioned.
Benz had made only very short trips around Mannheim in his vehicle while continuing to perfect it. Bertha would recharge the batteries
for the ignition at night as she pumped the treadle of her sewing machine, which had been hooked up to a generator.
Bertha proved to be a bit of generator herself. Very early one August morning in 1888, while Karl was off tinkering somewhere, she
hauled one of the three wheelers out of the shop, gathered her two sons, Eugen, 15, and Richard, 14, and embarked on a truly historic
road trip.
She had not told Karl, but she had decided to drive his vehicle from their home in Mannheim to her hometown of Pforzheim, about
60 miles away. This is a very quick drive today over the superb German roads. Back then it was an epic journey, especially since the
vehicle, with its tiny 8/10 horsepower engine, could barely get out of its own way. Its top speed on the flat was about 10 miles an
hour.
Bertha’s sons were frequently employed pushing the Motorwagen up hills. The world’s first gas stop was made in the village of Wiesloch,
where a bottle of “ligroin” (usually used to clean clothing) was purchased at an Apotheke, or drug store, and poured into the
car’s tank before the amazed eyes of the proprietor.
A weary, dusty but decidedly unbowed Bertha finally reached her parents’ house in Pforzheim shortly before sundown of a long summer
day. She then sent a telegram informing her stunned husband of her successful journey.
Talk about buzz! Bertha’s road trip quickly became shrouded in legend (Did she really clean the fuel line with her hairpin?) as tales of
it spread across Europe and the car was shown at exhibitions in Munich and Paris.
An encouraged Benz continued making improvements to his cars, soon switching from three to four wheels. His 3 horesepower Viktoria,
of 1893, was especially popular. It was capable of a speed of 11 miles per hour. By 1900, Benz had sold more than 2500 cars
and his reputation for quality automobiles was firmly established all over the world. (cont’d>)
Meanwhile, unknown to Benz, another German engineer, Gottlieb Daimler, was entertaining his own dreams of self-propulsion.
Daimler was an engine man, interested in powering whatever wheeled vehicles were at hand without the aid of horses. His first
automobile, “built” within a few months of Benz’s in 1886, was an Amerikanisch style carriage, ordered from a prominent maker and
then fitted with his proven engine and belt-drive running gear.
Daimler’s engines were something else. The few internal combustion engines around at the time were hissing, coughing things that
turned over at a top speed of about 180 revolutions per minute. But thanks to something called hot tube ignition and a cleverly designed
exhaust valve, Daimler’s first engine (1883) was in effect the first “souped up” engine, running at 600 rpm and capable of
running as high as 750 rpm.
With his partner, the ingenious Wilhelm Maybach, he built, in 1885, the “Single Track,” an enormous and truly scary-looking motorcycle
(the world’s first Hog!), constructed of iron and wood and incorporating a half-horsepower air-cooled internal combustion engine
of very advanced design. It was an improved version of this engine that was bolted onto the carriage a year later.
Daimler’s engines, thanks largely to Maybach’s imaginative engineering, became ever more powerful and reliable. But curiously,
Daimler had to be goaded, largely by Maybach, into making vehicles designed from the ground up to be motor cars rather than motorized
wagons or carriages. Then he had to be convinced that he should make his cars faster. Daimler had a hard time envisioning
self-propelled vehicles going much faster than horse-drawn ones. He didn’t think drivers would be able to control anything faster.
Plagued by illness and eventually forced to sell out his stake in his own company due to bad business decisions, Daimler seemed
destined to fade into obscurity. But with Daimler gone as well as the brilliant Maybach (who had left because of a contract dispute),
Daimler Motors was bereft of its technological brains and heart. The two friends, working on their own, continued to develop important
motoring advances, including the atomizing carburetor, which would essentially reign until the wholesale advent of fuel injection.
In 1895, at the insistence of a group of British industrialists interested in licensing Daimler engines,
both Daimler and Maybach were brought back into the fold. The company moved from
triumph to triumph. But the ailing Gottfried Daimler died in 1900, the same year that Maybach
completed the design and building of a truly superb automobile that would permanently enshrine
not only Daimler’s name but eventually that of Karl Benz. This was the mighty Mercedes.
A magnetic, energetic man named Emil Jellinek, a Czech diplomat and businessman who was
utterly smitten by automobiles, personally steered many of his wealthy friends into the purchase
of Daimler cars. He had joined the board of Daimler in 1900 and he incessantly urged
that the company build a faster, more powerful car to rise above growing competition.
The result was a four-cylinder, 35 horsepower car with a striking pressed steel frame that most enthusiasts point to as the true
“forefather of modern motor cars.” The car was capable of a then astounding average speed of 35 miles per hour. It ran good and it
looked good. And Jellinek knew a good thing when he saw it.
He secured sole sales rights for the car in France, Belgium, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the United States. But there was a bit
of sticky business. The French firm of Panhard-Levassor had earlier acquired a license for Daimler cars in France. Jellinek had raced
a 24-horsepower Daimler back in 1899, dubbing the car “Mercedes” after his eldest daughter. So he began selling this powerful new
Daimler car under the name Mercedes.
The car sold very well and acquired a world-wide reputation. So much so, that in 1902, Daimler Motors decided to adopt Mercedes
as the name for all private cars it built. Only commercial vehicles -- trucks and buses -- would continue to be called Daimlers.
The success of the Mercedes shocked Karl Benz out of a technological lethargy that had seen his company merely massaging older,
proven designs. To compete he came up with better, bigger engines and more modern “car like” designs. One such was the famous
200 horsepower “Blitzen Benz,” a four-cylinder (!!!) car which achieved a speed of over 140 miles an hour at Daytona Beach in 1911.
Benz soon moved to 6 cylinder cars and in the early 1920s began developing ever more reliable and powerful diesel engines. In
1924, the Daimler and Benz companies began merging interests, and in 1926, Daimler-Benz was formed.
Soon Mercedes-Benz cars became a byword for high quality and performance. Strange as it may seem, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler,
two of the greatest pioneers of the automobile, working in the same country at the same time, never knew each other, although
they are believed to have met once, briefly.
Karl Benz died in 1929, having lived long enough to see the growing reputation of the merged companies. Bertha Benz, the woman
who proved cars were definitely the way to go, died in 1944.
Hello members and friends!
Here we are into the 2nd month of the year
already and looking forward to spring!
The Ladies met in January and February,
normally our winter break, to go over some
important issues that have come up lately.
Recently several of our members have experienced
health problems and with most of
us being in the higher age bracket, our workforce
is lacking in strength. Therefore we
decided to leave the kitchen at the Heimatabend
to our excellent chef Trevor and his
team. The Ladies Auxiliary is still a vital part
of Club Loreley. Don't worry, there will still
be coffee and cake at the meetings, Christmas
cookies at the bazaar and pretzels at
Fiesta!
Sadly, we said farewell to our member Ilse Eilert who passed away after a lengthy illness. Ilse will be missed by
all of us. Also, best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Toni Blakholmer who underwent knee surgery recently.
In March our ladies and their partners are looking forward to an evening of laughter and great food at the Class
Act Dinner Theatre. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 5. at 2 pm. (not 11 am. as
in the past) in the member’s lounge. Please come and join us!
See you at Club Loreley!
Websites of the Month: ^tÜÄ äÉÅ WÉÜyy
A few members expressed concern over some activity at our Club Loreley forum. Of note were some people who registered
to our forum on behalf of internet pornography sites. Club Loreley is a public forum, and anyone is free to join. That doesn’t
mean we condone them joining (quite the contrary) but we can’t be held responsible for this. There is simply no way to precensor
or filter people from joining our forum. The best we can do is simply keep an eye out for these people, and delete
their memberships. This is an unfortunate way for them to hopefully generate more traffic to their websites, in much the
same way spam is sent to your email address. The forums are a great and powerful tool when used properly, and we won’t
let these people compromise the integrity of our forum. I will keep a better eye out on this issue, but if you notice anything
unusual feel free to email me.
Here’s a link to a bi-monthly German newsletter similar to our own, but for the Ottawa area. It lists the events happening at
Club Almrausch and has many other interesting articles in it. www.wamm.ca/HBH_News.html
This is a great website to look up anything! It’s an open online encyclopedia that anyone is free to contribute to. It is quite
large now, and in many languages. Check it out: www.wikipedia.org
I’m sure many of you have heard of Ebay. It’s the world’s largest online auctioning company. It’s quite amazing all the things
you can buy and sell there: www.ebay.ca
I hope this Report finds everyone healthy and
happy.
The first scores from the Pokal have been recorded
and posted in the member's Lounge and
are available below. Some of the pairings are
close so be sure to shoot your second round before
the next deadline. That will ensure that your
competition does not get an easy advance to the
next round.
Our trip to Ottawa on May 27th has been booked.
We have hired a luxury coach bus and made reservations
at a great hotel. We need as many active
members to join us so that we can give Club
Almrausch a good fight for the trophies. All are
welcome to come along, you don't have to be a
member of the Rifle Club to attend. After the rifle
competition there is a dinner and dance to be
held at Club Almrausch later that night. If you are
interested in going or have any other questions
hat a tremendous evening W our recent Karneval dance
was as our own 1st K.G. Loreley
Oshawa celebrated it’s 3 x 11 anniversary.
We had a full house
thanks to the many other
Karneval groups that joined us. In
attendance were guests from the
K.G. Hansa Brampton, K.G.
Treuer Husar Toronto, K.G. Narrhalla
58 Hamilton, K.G. Narrenzunft
Concordia Kitchener,
K.G. Ontario Prinzengarde and
K.G. Treuer Husar Mississauga
who also brought their Senior
dancers. A special thanks to the
dancers for their performances
which included the first showing
Karneval - Jan 28th 2006
of this years version of the
Funkengarde as well as the Can Can, a traditional crowd favorite. The Kindertots were the darlings of the evenings, their
smiles seemed to light the whole place up!
A special thanks to our master of Ceremonies, Tom Henninger, for a job well done. The hall was beautifully decorated. The
many Ordens on display from days gone by added to the history of the evening. As always, Trevor and his staff provided an
excellent dinner with dessert. The band was Euro Connection and they were perfect for the evening. They knew all the appropriate
marching songs and were very helpful in keeping the evening flowing smoothly. The number of people that wore costumes
was just awesome!! The judges had a hard time picking the best ones but in my opinion, everyone deserved a prize
just for participating. Thanks so much for getting into the spirit…it really set the mood!
Over the course of the evening, I received many positive comments from guests about our club, especially about the feeling
of “gemütlichkeit”. A special thanks to the Board of Directors of Club Loreley for their generous donation to our Karneval
group in recognition of our contributions to the evening. We really appreciate your continued support and look forward to
working together to continue making Club Loreley an exciting and fun place to be!
Our Karneval group is really trying to stay active in the German-Canadian Mardi Gras Society (BDKK). We’ve already attended
Karneval functions with K.G. Treuer Husar Mississauga and K.G. Narrenzunft Concordia Kitchener in November and our Seniors
have been invited to perform at the Karneval dance at K.G. Hansa Brampton on Feb 25.
We’ve been invited to perform at our clubs Miss Loreley Pageant on March 4. Our Kinders, Juniors and Seniors are working
hard in preparation for competition in Hamilton on April 8. Congratulations to Alex Burghardt (Kinder), Annie Williams (Junior)
and Jennie Gough (Senior) for being chosen as this years Funkenmariechen. Each of them will be performing a Funke solo at
competition. Meghan Harper (Senior), will be performing a freestyle solo. Best of luck to all of our girls!
On April 22, our girls are looking forward to performing at our clubs Heimat Abend. The Kindertots and Kinders are once again
invited to the Hansa Haus on April 30 to participate in their annual Kinderfest, a fun filled afternoon of dance and games.
Karneval was very well attended and was a great success. I wish to thank all of the people involved especially Holly
Henninger, her Committee and the Loreley Youth Dancers. This was one of the best in recent years due to the fact
that it was our 3 x 11 celebration and friends from other Karneval groups were present. I thank them all.
By the time this report comes out we will have crowned a new Miss Loreley and Mini Miss at the Pageant on March
4th. I am certain that these new representatives will serve our club faithfully in the German tradition.
Shortly I will be involved in Fiesta and will be starting to plan our float for the parade and am asking for volunteers
to come forward. Any help even for a couple of hours would be greatly appreciated. This is a large undertaking and
the more hands make light work. For the past two years we have been awarded the Presidents’ Choice trophy for
our float. A third win in a row would be a record for Club Loreley.
At our upcoming membership meeting there will be decisions announced on amendments to our by-laws. It would
be to everyone’s advantage to attend this membership meeting as it will affect the future of our club.
In closing, I hope that more people volunteer to help keep the club healthy and prosperous and that everyone has
a very Happy Easter.
Schulden!
Man macht doch immer alles richtig !??
Ilse Eilert
May 27, 1923
Seelze, Germany
† January 19, 2006
Whitby, Ontario
Beloved wife of the late
Ferdinand Eilert and dear friend of Paul Pantermöller.
Loving Oma to Christa, Scott and Corinna Eilert.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.
Wojciech Gniewek
Oct. 6th 1958
Nowi Sacz, Poland
† Feb. 15th, 2006
Pickering, Ontario
Beloved husband of Erika,
Loving father of Chris and Anthony.
Wojciech will be sadly missed by his brothers
and sisters and their families.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I’ve found that peace at the end
of the day.
Marie Yvette Delores
In her 86 th year.
Beloved wife of the late
Don’t grief for me, for now I’m free,
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all.
