Course Description:<br />

The purpose of this course is for participants to explore, identify <strong>and</strong> learn an overall<br />

approach to laceration management, including wound assessment, proper provision of local<br />

anesthesia, achieving hemostasis, <strong>and</strong> incorporating gentle tissue h<strong>and</strong>ling while suturing to<br />

promote proper suture placement <strong>and</strong> enhance final appearance of the wound.<br />

Participants will identify <strong>and</strong> demonstrate technical skills improvements in laceration<br />

management.<br />

The clinician will also have the opportunity to explore <strong>and</strong> practice the skills of cryotherapy<br />

for skin lesions, punch biopsy <strong>and</strong> shave biopsy.<br />

Target Audience<br />

Workshop designed for the advanced practice nurse student, novice advanced practice<br />

nurse, or the advanced practice nurse with emerging interest in developing their practice<br />

skills.<br />

Learning Objectives<br />

Identify methods used in laceration<br />

assessment<br />

Practice local <strong>and</strong> digital block<br />

anesthesia<br />

Employ surgical instruments effectively<br />

Nurses<br />

Demonstrate simple interrupted <strong>and</strong><br />

horizontal mattress suture procedures<br />

Perform effectiveness of punch <strong>and</strong><br />

shave biopsies<br />

Perform cryotherapy applications to<br />

skin lesions<br />

USF Health is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American<br />

Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.<br />

A maximum of 6.5 contact hours may be earned by learners who successfully complete this<br />

continuing nursing education activity.
