COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
Dear Friends
Greetings! I hope you enjoy this issue of Network. It is a great honor and privilege
to join MSU and the College of Business. My family and I arrived from
Louisville, Kentucky on July 1, 2002 as I assumed the role of Dean of the COB.
My wife, Mary, and I have four children;
two are home with us and two are in college.
We both have family ties to
Minnesota, so it is wonderful to be back.
I look forward to working with our constituents
as we innovate and grow in the
context of technology-enhanced academic
excellence in a student-centered environment.
My sincere thanks to those who have
devoted their energies toward building and
shaping the success of the college. We are
poised for further innovation and excellence.
I would particularly like to thank Dr.
Marilyn Fox who did a wonderful job as
Interim Dean last year.
Please let me provide you with some updates about the college.
• The COB is accredited by the AACSB. This accreditation means that the COB
is an elite business school both in the state and the nation.
•Our Laptop Initiative is now in its third year of implementation. Approximately
1,200 students will be using laptops in business classes during the 2002-2003
academic year.
• We are one of the “most wired” campuses according to Yahoo Internet. More
accurately, the COB is probably the most “wireless” since our computing environment
in the classrooms and on campus is primarily wireless.
• Approximately 95% of our classes are taught by professors holding a Ph.D. in
a core business discipline.
• COB Students have the opportunity to study in France or Finland with sister
business schools. An opportunity in Germany is in the planning stages.
• “Mavjobs” online facilitates student placement for both internships while in
school and careers after graduation.
• Approximately 240 business students made the Dean’s List during Spring
Semester 2002. We are extremely proud of these dedicated students.
Finally, we welcome three new faculty members who came on board this fall:
John Kaliski (Management), Paul Brennan (Accounting and Business Law), and
Kim Hinrichs (Management).
Sincerely,
Scott D. Johnson
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT
RELATIONS COORDINATOR
A Newsletter for Alumni and Friends | Winter 2002-2003
Charting a Course
After 35 Years of Advising Students,
Herke Chooses a New Path
If you graduated from the Minnesota State University's
College of Business within the last twenty-five years,
there is a good chance you worked with Larry Herke,
student relations coordinator/coordinator of admissions
with the college. After thirty-five years of service to
MSU, Larry retired on December 18, 2002.
When Larry started working with the College of
Business in 1977, he advised all College of Business
students who needed assistance, helping each coordinate
a path to graduation. Through the years, the college
grew tremendously and reached a peak of more
than 4,000 majors.
“During the peak years of business majors, when they
asked the College of Business to stand at graduation, it
seemed that nearly one-half of the graduates stood up,"
Larry remembers. "With 4,000 majors, I couldn't
advise them all, so we began hiring graduate assistants
in the Advising Center."
Advising students has been a rewarding profession for
Larry, because he has been able to see the the difference
that a clear collegiate path has made for students.
In his first meeting with a first-year student, Larry
would help the student select the classes he or she
should take each semester in order to first, be admitted
to the College of Business, and second, to graduate.
It was during the times when he worked with a student
who was unable to reach one of these benchmarks that
Larry found most challenging. However, as a number
of successful graduates can attest, Larry was always
ready with an alternate plan.
"Many sophomore or early junior students would come
to me saying 'I don't have a high enough GPA to get
into the College of Business, but my parents expect me
to graduate in two years'. So I might suggest a different
but related major with a minor in business. Then the
students would still be able to work in the field in
which they were interested. I gave them a game plan."
Larry's direction is just what many challenged students
needed over the years. He remembers a young man
Best Buy’s Allen Lenzmeier Sees Success as Building a Culture of Teamwork
“There was no grand plan,” Allen Lenzmeier says, smiling as he launches into
stories about student years at MSU and the evolution of a successful career.
“Essentially, I always looked three to five years ahead with binoculars, not ten
years with a telescope.”
Mr. Lenzmeier, President and Chief Operating Officer of Best Buy Company,
Inc., the nation’s largest volume specialty retailer of name-brand consumer electronics,
personal computers, entertainment software and appliances, leads a team
of more than 90,000 employees who operate Best Buy retail stores, Musicland
Group, Future Shop, Magnolia Hi-Fi, and Consumer and Brand Marketing and its
international divisions.
Confident, seasoned, and not particularly comfortable discussing his own accomplishments,
Lenzmeier is clearly a team player who enjoys a challenge — a quality
that has kept him moving, learning and even unlearning in order to succeed
since his youth.
Allen Lenzmeier grew up in New Prague, Minnesota and graduated from
Shakopee High School. He began study for the priesthood after grade school
graduation, but after a year changed direction. Like many first-year MSU students,
his career thoughts were influenced by the realities of initial course work;
engineering became less appealing after a semester of calculus and he gravitated
to accounting, where his skill with numbers brought him success. His grades at
MSU were "good in accounting and not so great in other things," he says, but he
values the balanced education he received.
As a new MSU graduate in 1965, Lenzmeier set his sights on becoming a CPA
with one of the “big eight” accounting firms. When positions became available
with Price Waterhouse and Company, Lenzmeier and his wife, Kathy, took a leap
and moved to New Orleans.
Ready for a new challenge four years later, looking for a way to become involved
in the daily operation of a business, Al took a job as Assistant Controller at
National Car Rental. The family moved back to Minnesota where he enjoyed the
opportunity to “be there, and see the fruition of daily work.”
When the need for a new challenge set in again, he looked for an opportunity to
go beyond accounting and found it at Tom Thumb Markets. There, in a highly
entrepreneurial environment, he learned operations and became involved in hiring
and personnel management in addition to financial management.
“When I didn’t see there was opportunity for growth, I tended
to get bored,” he reflects. “I needed new responsibilities. I see
now that I tended to take risks—sometimes it worked, sometimes
it didn’t. Even so, I was never interested in a secure,
long-term position.”
After six years with Tom Thumb, the draw of working with a
larger business took Mr. Lenzmeier to Perkins Restaurants, a
privately-held business purchased by Holiday Inn during his
tenure with the company. He found strong opportunity there,
but when headquarters moved to Memphis, Tennessee, he tried
it for a year, then made a change.
Best Buy was a far cry from Perkins Restaurants, a $90-100
million corporation, in 1984. But the position of Vice President
of Finance and Operations was appealing, Al says, because
Dick Schulze, the company’s founder, had a plan for growing
the business; Schulze was a good salesman who knew where
he was going.
“Best Buy is very competitive,” says Lenzmeier. “We play to
win. We always have stretch goals. We want to be the best and
to build something.”
That spirit drew Lenzmeier in, and Mr. Schulze came to
depend on him for an increasingly broad range of management
expertise as the years passed. Best Buy grew, responsibilities
changed, and Lenzmeier, doing his work the best he could,
found himself in a position of influence.
“My work now,” he explains, “is sort of like conducting an
orchestra. I unleash the power of the people. I give direction,
coaching, appropriate latitude, and focus on collaboration and
teamwork. My job is to develop future leaders, encourage new
hires to move outside their comfort zones, and allow healthy
conflict.”
Lenzmeier has achieved what many aspire to, yet demonstrates
a rare humility. He has power, but thinks of it as an opportunity
for leadership, not a trophy.
“Success,” he says simply, “comes when you enjoy what
you’re doing. Work can be a roller coaster, but that’s part of the
game. You succeed when you maintain a high degree of passion
for what you’re doing and remain open and willing to
reinvent yourself.”
Mr. Lenzmeier values his relationship with his wife of thirtyseven
years, Kathy Lenzmeier, and notes that he could not
have achieved what he has without her support. They have
raised three children, shared hobbies and activities, and
involved themselves in their community.
And success, for the two, has also meant a decision to share.
During the past decade the Lenzmeiers have supported and
been in positions of leadership with the Boys and Girls Clubs
of the Twin Cities. At Minnesota State University, Mankato,
their gifts have made the College of Business Information
Technology Initiative possible, through funding for extensive
classroom renovations and establishment of a fund to make
student investment in laptop computers more affordable. Their
reasoning is uncomplicated.
“We realize we are very fortunate and feel strongly that we
have an obligation to society. There are people out there who,
through no fault of their own, live in difficult circumstances. It
only makes sense to give back to the community.”
I.T. Initiative: Bringing Students One
Step Closer to the Business World
In the same way computers have changed the way the world
does business, the Information Technology Initiative has
changed the way Minnesota State University, Mankato
College of Business students learn.
Since its inception in the fall of 2000, the Initiative has helped
fulfill the College’s mission “to provide programs in a technologically-advanced,
active learning environment” by ensuring
that all students have the same opportunity and exposure to the
technology needed to succeed in today’s business world.
“We have gone through growing pains,” said Assistant to the
Dean of the College of Business, Dr. Corinne Dickey. Initially,
some students and parents felt the cost of the notebook computers
and related fees were too expensive. However, after
seeing the benefit of the new style of learning first hand, the
same students are the biggest proponents of the initiative.
“Once the students get the notebook computers in their hands,
they really like it,” said Dickey.
The I.T. Initiative was conceived in response to comments
from community business leaders. According to Dickey, these
working professionals told the College of Business faculty
they wanted to hire employees who were computer literate and
able to prepare Powerpoint presentations and actively use the
internet for research and communication.
Dickey says a generous donation from alumnus Allen
Lenzmeier made the Initiative a reality. “Without him, we
probably would not have been able to implement the Initiative
PROFESSOR MARY ROLFES
TAKES FULL ADVANTAGE OF
THE SMARTBOARD
THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE
PLACES TECHNOLOGY IN THE HANDS OF COB STUDENTS
as quickly as we did.” This year, Lenzmeier’s donation provided more than
$30,000 in scholarships for students who are participating in the Initiative.
Under the Initiative, all students entering the College of Business as majors or
minors are required to purchase a notebook computer through MSU’s Campus
Computer Store or on-line via the COB web site.
When the Initiative began in the fall of 2000, 94 students participated with
leased IBM Thinkpads. Currently, 1,200 College of Business students are
enrolled in laptop classes, using Dell Latitudes, complete with all of the hardware
and software they will need, as well as a DVD/CD-RW.
Four classrooms in Morris Hall have been remodeled to service I.T. courses.
These classrooms are equipped with additional power sources and Smart
Boards. An additional five classrooms in Armstrong Hall will be upgraded to I.T.
rooms over the 2002 holiday break.
The nine classrooms can each hold up to 36 students, however, an additional
large classroom is in the works in Morris Hall. The auditorium-style room will
service up to 88 students with power sources in each of the desks. This room will
be available for Fall 2003 classes.
In Fall 2003, all COB courses will be taught as laptop courses. However, there
will be one section for each of the core courses that will be taught as a non-laptop
course. This is to serve students with majors outside the COB who have to
take COB courses. These students are not required to purchase a laptop and take
part in the Initiative.
Much of the success of the Initiative can be attributed to the work of the faculty.
Professors often place notes, instructions and assignments on their web sites,
which students can easily access from anywhere on campus with MSU’s wireless
technology.
The students, like the professors, work to make the most of the technology.
Marketing major Mariah Forman says that the I.T. Initiative helps students master
technological skills. “Because of our immersion into a technological world,
we can better market ourselves to employers. We have a competitive advantage
when job searching, not only because we have the know-how to find thousands
of jobs via the Internet in mili-seconds, but because we have several technological
advantages over other applicants,” she explains. “The bottom line is that I
can perform my job with more efficiency than the next person.”
DR. CORINNE DICKEY CONDUCTED THE E-MENTORING TRAINING SESSION AT
THE KICK-OFF CELEBRATION HELD ON OCTOBER 1, 2002.
E-Mentoring Program at its Best
E-mentoring, At a Glance
The E-Mentoring Program was designed in
1999 to give the College of Business Advisory
Council an opportunity to be more involved with
students. In the program, students are paired with
members of the Council who give them an inside
look into their area of career interest. The primary
communication channel is electronic mail, often
prompted by suggested topics from program coordi-
nator Dr. Corinne Dickey. The e-mail format makes
communication easy and regular, allowing the
mentor to readily offer advice and
insight to the mentee, even at a distance.
In addition to e-mail communication,
participants take part in a Kick-Off Celebration,
Shadow Day, and Wrap-Up Celebration. Currently,
the E-Mentoring Program has 14 mentors
and 16 mentee participants.
As e-mentoring partners go, Dawn Courrier and Byron Pike
seemed made for each other. “Things just fell into place,”
says Courrier. “ We both grew up in small towns, went to
MSU, and were interested in tax accounting. We’re just
small town kids that wanted to make it in the big city,” says
the partner of KPMG of Minneapolis.
Courrier was Pike’s e-mentor for the 2001-2002 school
year. According to Corinne Dickey, Assistant to the Dean
of the College of Business, Courrier and Pike made a connection
even before they knew they would be e-mentoring
partners for the rest of the school year.
“I was introducing everybody at the e-mentoring kick-off
and when I got to them, they were already sitting together
and talking. I said, ‘Oh, I see you’ve already met,’ but they
didn’t yet know that they were partners.”
It turns out that each had sat down to talk with Professor
Bruce Smith. “We really owe it to Bruce for bringing us
together,” Dawn laughs.
Courrier and Pike’s mentoring relationship laid the foundation
for Pike’s easy transition into the professional world.
Since choosing his major in accounting, Pike had been
interested in working at KPMG. In the spring, when most ementoring
students take part in a shadow day and mock
interview at their mentor’s business, Pike used the day for a
real interview.
“We already knew we were going to make him an offer,
based on my judgement. But we decided to have him interview,
so everyone could meet him, and of course, they all
loved him,” says Courrier.
Before Pike started at KPMG, he completed an internship
with Best Buy in the summer of 2002. While he was interning,
Best Buy contracted KPMG as their primary tax
accounting firm. Although Byron was supposed to start at
KPMG in mid-August, Best Buy requested that he continue
to work in their office until the first week of October.
Although Courrier was looking forward to having Pike in
the office earlier, she was pleased that she had a very happy
client. It was just another case of things falling into place
for Courrier and Pike.
WILLIAM D. & PAUL W. RADICHEL
DISTINGUISHED BUSINESSPERSON
Brothers Paul Radichel and the late Bill
Radichel shared commitment to bringing
growth and progress to the Mankato region. As
the former leaders of the North Star Concrete
enterprise, they are considered to have established
the infrastructure of the area business
community by providing building products and leadership the
community needed to grow through phases of industrial and business
development. The Radichel brothers were involved in many
well-known construction projects and real estate developments
that were essential to establishing the region as an important
regional business center. The two were the best of friends and the
most loyal of business partners.
DR. MARILYN L. FOX
DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR
Dr. Marilyn L. Fox, Professor of Management at
MSU, served as interim Dean of the College of
Business in 2001-2002. An expert in
Organizational Behavior and Human Resource
Management, she teaches both graduate and
undergraduate classes in these areas. Fox has
been recognized as an excellent teacher with many
nominations and awards for outstanding teaching. Students often
say they wish they had more professors like Dr. Fox.
Fox is a nationally recognized author and scholar, known for her
research and publications in the area of occupational stress and
health, work-family conflict, and the effect that various aspects of
personality have on individual attitudes and behaviors. She formerly
served on the editorial board of the Journal of Management,
and is currently a reviewer for the Journal of Organizational
Behavior, and the Academy of Management Journal, and is a past
president of the Midwest Academy of Management.
BYRON PIKE
STUDENT LEADER
Byron Pike, a 2002 accounting graduate, proved
to be a leader both inside and outside the classroom
during his stay at MSU. One of his best
attributes at MSU was his ability to maintain a
4.0 GPA while representing himself and the
University at many activities. In addition, he was
always willing to help his classmates with any of their coursework.
Beyond the classroom, Byron worked between 20-25 hours each
week as the student supervisor at the Campus Computer Store. He
participated in the Accounting Club, Golden Key National Honor
Society, freshman honor society Alpha Lambda Delta, and MSU
Student Senate. Byron has volunteered for Special Olympics and
is a certified coach in basketball, golf, and volleyball.
Entrepreneurship:
Passion and Process
Management professor Dr. Brenda Flannery has an interest
in entrepreneurs who are—in her words—people who
see something that needs to be done and have the drive and
know-how to accomplish it. “It’s the passion of the person
that interests me,” she explains. “It’s the inclination to do
things that mean something.”
Flannery says there are two parts to entrepreneurship: passion
and process. Students get a dose of both parts in
Flannery’s 400-level management class, Entrepreneurship.
The class is built around Flannery’s teaching philosophy
that all students are “wonderfully unique” and must be
allowed to shape their coursework to fit their individuality.
In her Entrepreneurship course, students prepare a business
plan for an entrepreneurial project that interests and
inspires them. Past projects include a wedding planning
service, a hand blown glass business, and a farming operation.
Flannery acts as a consultant to her students, providing the
right resources to complete their plans. “I let them come
up with their own business concepts, then I take them
through each step of writing their business plan,” she says.
Plans include self-assessment, industry and market analysis,
a marketing plan, human resource management, and
financial analysis and projections.
When their plans are complete, students participate in an
entrepreneurial fair, where they set up trade booths to
showcase their business idea. Area business leaders serve
as judges to students who answer a series of questions
regarding their business ideas. The top five students are
asked to make a trade show presentation, and the top three
students are formally recognized.
Taking a class in entrepreneurship considerably increases
the chances that an entrepreneurial business will succeed.
The research that is needed to complete a course like
Flannery’s minimizes risk. According to Flannery, even
students who have no plans to start an entrepreneurial venture
can benefit from the course because it makes them
think of a business holistically and apply the knowledge
they’ve gained in all of their business courses.
After holding several student entrepreneurial fairs,
Flannery decided she wanted “to take it to the next level.”
She helped organize the “1st Annual Entrepreneurs’ Fair,”
held on the MSU campus on Tuesday, December 3, 2002.
The fair, co-hosted by MSU and Riverbend Center for
Enterprise Facilitation, provided professional entrepreneurial
and business training, along with entrepreneurial
and business exhibits to a varied audience, including students,
aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners.
The fair will be an annual event.
For more information regarding next year’s fair, contact
Dr. Brenda Flannery at 507/389-5333, or by e-mail,
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
CHAN LEE, PH.D. ,DIRECTOR, FINANCIAL
PLANNING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Thriving Program
Prepares Students for

CFP Exam
The Financial Planning Certificate Program, one of the
Minnesota State University, Mankato’s most popular
Extended Campus programs, is designed to fulfill the educational
requirements needed to sit for the Certified
Financial Planner board’s comprehensive exam. The
CFP board is the sole authority for awarding the CFP
certification, which is one of the most highly recognized
professional designations among financial services professionals
in the United States and a number of other countries
in the world.
MSU’s financial planning certificate program consists of six
required courses, which include Process of Financial
Planning, Insurance Planning, Investment Planning, Tax
Planning, Retirement Planning, and Estate Planning. The
courses can be completed in as little as two semesters. There
is also an additional review course, which, although not
required, is highly recommended to improve the success
rate for the CFP board examination. In order for one to
get the CFP designation, three years of financial planning
related work experience must also be fulfilled.
The program has continued to grow in popularity since its
initiation in 1998. “Our class is expanding like crazy!” says
program director Dr. Chan Lee. Currently courses are
offered in Bloomington, Minneapolis, and Plymouth with a
total of 122 students enrolled in five different fall courses.
The rising popularity of the program appears to correlate
with the rising need for financial planners. “There is a
tremendous amount of demand for financial planners,” says
Lee. He explains that many banks and brokerage firms offer
their clients financial planning services, recognizing that a
well-advised client will have additional funds to invest.
Lee says financial planners enjoy a well-paying profession
and the pleasure of helping clients identify and achieve
financial goals, whether they include sending their children
to college or retiring early. “It is a rewarding profession
where you can help people and see them reach their goals,”
he says.
SHANE BOWYER
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
WOW! What a great list
of donors. The College
of Business is grateful
to all the people who
have supported the
students at Minnesota
State University, Mankato.
Your support really
does make a difference
in educating today’s
student.
There are a lot of
exciting things happening
in the classrooms,
offices, and even in the
hallways of Morris Hall here at the College of Business.
Here are a few of the great things that are happening that
donors have helped support:
Information Technology Initiative
The Initiative keeps expanding. There are more than 1,200
students using laptops that have wireless capabilities across
the entire campus. (We actually have printers in the
hallways!) A number of classrooms have also been
remodeled to accommodate the new style of teaching geared
toward the laptop.
Scholarships
The College of Business awarded 64 general scholarships,
29 accounting scholarships and another 123 IT initiative
scholarships for a total of 216 awards.
Student Achievement
Students competed in national sales competitions; 243
students were named to the Dean’s List Spring semester;
study-abroad courses educated students to the world;
internships were filled; and finally, graduates were placed in
jobs!
Faculty Activity
Faculty published and presented numerous research
projects, advised students, created new curriculum to use
with the laptops, and helped students find jobs.
Even with all these great things happening, we are looking
to the future. There are a number of goals that the College of
Business is working to achieve. My role, with the help of
donors, is to facilitate the process that benefits the future of
our extraordinary students.
Some of the major goals for the College of Business are:
1 ) Increase the overall College of Business Endowment
2 ) Increase the value of scholarships to meet the increase in the
cost of tuition
3 ) Assist in reinstating the M.B.A.
4 ) Develop a strategic plan for establishment of an Endowed Chair,
Endowed Professorship, and naming the College of Business
I feel fortunate to be involved with the College of Business
and all the great things that are happening. Although I am
new to this position, I have deep passion for MSU, dating
back to a time even before I was an MSU student.
Please give me a call or drop me an e-mail if you would like
to hear about what’s going on with the College of Business
or the rest of MSU. There are a number of faculty members
who would also love to hear what you are doing now that
you are in the “real world!”
Presidential Scholars
in the College of Business
COB Graduates Eight Presidential Scholars
The Presidential Scholarship awards, created in
1995 by the Minnesota State University, Mankato
Foundation Board of Directors, provide much
needed financial relief to outstanding students
who exhibit excellence in academia and service.
The scholarships are awarded to first year or
transfer students who earned a composite ACT
score of 26 or higher and ranked in the top 10
percent of his or her high school graduating class.
Awards are in the amount of a $10,000 scholarship
over four years and $5000 over two years
(for transfer students).
The College of Business was proud to have eight
presidential scholars in the 2002 graduating class,
including Allyson Buckles, Austin Colby, Jessica
Edge, Michael Fauver, Amanda Fude, Tara
Gipson, Brian Holler, and Justin Sandmann.
“The Presidential Scholars are students who have
already achieved at a high level. We compete
with a number of institutions for these outstanding
students,” said College of Business Dean
Scott Johnson. “The College of Business is
extremely proud of our recent group of eight
scholars who graduated this past spring.”
The graduates appreciate the freedom the
Presidential Scholarship allowed them during their
years in college. “Because I got the scholarship, I
didn’t have to work. I could concentrate on my
studies and still have time to attend sporting events
or theater events,” explains Fauver. “I guess you’d
say it made all the difference in the world.”
Today’s challenging economic climate has left
some of the 2002 graduates still seeking their
first professional job. However, they all recognize
that they have left the College of Business
ready for the professional world. “The faculty
prepares students for life beyond college,” says
Edge.
“They were so helpful,” adds Fude. “The professors
helped me through my courses, and helped
me understand what I needed to get ready for the
‘real world.’”
JUSTIN SANDMANN
The scholars look forward to using their degrees
and developing as professionals. Edge is busy
planning a December wedding, and Sandmann,
who was married this summer, looks forward to
one day starting a family in the Mankato area. It
Scholarships
is clear the future is bright.
AMANDA FUDE
Colby best expresses the sentiments of all eight
of the Presidential Scholars, “I want to say thank
you to the Presidential Scholarship Program and
to all of the professors in the College of Business
for allowing me to reach my full potential. Any
prospective students who are considering attending
MSU couldn’t go wrong by doing so.”
MICHAEL FAUVER
JESSICA EDGE
What’s a typical day like for a college junior who is a double major in marketing
and international business, as well as a college ambassador, sorority president and
a Presidential Scholar? “Crazy,” laughs Sarah Wells, a Minnesota State
University, Mankato student who is all these things and more.
Sarah has become a pro at time management since beginning college in the fall
of 2000. Most days she has classes in the morning, followed by two to five hours
of work in the College of Business Dean’s office. Following work, she tries to
make it home for a bite to eat, but depending on the day, she’ll be back on campus
to give a tour or attend an ambassadors or sorority meeting. “Good time management
is really important. I carry everything I might need during the day, just
in case I don’t make it home in between. My bag is huge,” she says with a smile.
Like most students, Sarah says she has changed a lot in the first few years of college.
Networking is one of the skills she’s acquired since beginning at MSU. The Ireton,
IA native explains that coming from a town of 800 people, there was never a need
to create new contacts or relationships. “Everybody knows everybody,” she says.
“Here, I’ve learned how to talk to new people and start relationships with them.”
Sarah says the Presidential Scholarship has opened a lot of doors, allowing her to
meet alumni and visit the president's house. However, she most appreciates the
program’s recognition of leadership and service, in addition to academic performance.
“I think its really good that the scholarship isn’t just based on grades.
They take other things into account,” she explains. “It’s important that students
know that if you can talk to people, if you can be a leader, if you can donate your
time, people will notice and give you credit.”
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to educate
undergraduate students to be successful
and responsible business leaders
dedicated to pursuing excellence.
Our high quality business programs
primarily focus on meeting the
education needs of Minnesota students,
with a secondary focus on meeting the
needs of students from the region.
We partner with business to provide our
programs in a technologically
advanced, active learning environment.
Our faculty, students and external
partners work together in an
environment of mutual respect and
continuous professional development.
The college encourages diversity of
thought, exploration of technology,
intellectual discovery, and contributions
to the improvement of our global
society. We pursue excellence in
teaching, and engage in high quality
research and service to support our
teaching. Although we value basic
research, our intellectual contributions
focus principally on applied research
and instructional development which
enhance the learning process and
improve business practice. Our service
facilitates management of the college
and university, supports extracurricular
activities, contributes to our business
disciplines through the scholarly review
and editorial process, and builds
business partnerships to enrich
student learning.
Traveling Classroom
Students experience New York and Europe
For many Minnesota State University, Mankato College of Business students, travel to a large city or even another
country is an important part of their education. Experiencing a new environment reminds students of the possibilities
in the world of business.
Dr. Bruce Smith, a professor in the Accounting & Business Law department, plans an annual trip to New York
City that is open to all COB students. This year, Smith has planned two trips because a high number of students
are interested in participating. “Way back in January (2002), I had over fifty people who wanted to go,” Smith
said. Thirty-six students will travel from December 15-22, 2002, while 28 will travel from January 5-12, 2003.
On the New York trip, students take part in several business related activities including visits to the New York
Stock Exchange, the Federal Exchange Bank, and presentations from business leaders. On the tourist side, the
group visits Chinatown and Little Italy and are encouraged to take in a Broadway show. “They find Greenwich
Village on their own,” says Smith.
According to Smith, students gain a lot of insight when they are exposed to a city the size of New York. “It shows
them that working in New York is a possibility,” he said.
Spring break (March 8-16, 2003) brings another travel opportunity for COB students. Dr. Basil Janavaras will be
taking a group to his home country of Greece. Students will earn college credits as they explore the business and
culture of Athens and the islands of Aegina, Hydra, and Poros.
In addition to seeing historical landmarks, students will enjoy lectures on topics such as “doing business in
Greece” and the 2004 Olympics. There will also be visits to both Greek companies and subsidiaries of foreignbased
companies.
Some students choose to extend their travels by studying abroad for a semester or two. Each year MSU College
of Business students have the opportunity to experience a new culture and earn MSU credits in a different country
through an International Business Exchange. Currently, MSUhas business exchange programs with Helia,
Helsinki Business Polytechnic in Helsinki, Finland and Institut de Formation International (IFI) in Rouen, France.
The following students spent at least one semester of the 2001-2002 school year at Helia: Adam Kittelson, Aaron
Poloquin, Caleb Thunem, Travis Haasch, and Adam Segar. During the Spring 2002 semester, Mike Berg, Marie
Beane, Dan Royse, Jackie Youngdahl, and Jamie Zehnder studied at IFI, while Nicole Peterson and Danielle
Lafore will spend their Spring 2003 semester at the French institute.
There are several students from Helsinki who spent the Fall 2002 at MSU including Reina Lahtinen, Sanna
Uotinen, Kati Remo, and Simo Mahkonen. From IFI, Almandine Herbert and Margurite de Montgolfier will
spend the full 2002-2003 school year at MSU.
Helping Students Do What They Didn’t Think Possible
... On Course continued from page 1
who had no support from his family regarding his educational
endeavors. The student often felt overwhelmed by the process,
but Larry was able to show him a path to graduation by meeting
with the student each week. "He earned his four-year
degree; and every time I see him, he tells me he can't believe
what he's accomplished," said Larry. "You just feel so good
knowing you were part of the team that helped students achieve
goals they never thought were possible."
In addition to advising, Larry taught seven courses during his
years at MSU. "I also worked with a number of community colleges,
where many of our transfer students start their education.
We'd go to the community college to discuss their program and
then work out the details of transferring credit. I enjoyed the
variety advising offered," he added.
The College of Business has seen many changes since Larry
first stepped onto the MSU campus. During the earlier years
there were ten major areas of study in the College of Business.
Five of those majors were moved to other colleges. For example,
the computer science program was moved to the College of
Science, Engineering and Technology.
"We've also gone from a discussion/lecture teaching format to
one utilizing interactive wireless notebook communication. Our
classrooms are now fitted with notebook computers and
Smartboards," said Larry.
However, some things haven't changed. Larry says it is still a
relaxing six-minute walk across the entire campus, and instructors
and students are still able to enjoy a low-key relaxed relationship—one
that doesn't always exist on a campus our size.
"MSU has a great diversity of both programs and students.
Nearly everyone I have worked with has been a great support
through the years, especially the past few years as my hours
have been reduced during my phased retirement program. The
staff in the College of Business, particularly Terri Evers (our
office manager), and our advising team staff have been phenomenal."
said Larry.
Welcome Week Open House
The College of Business hosted more than 100 incoming first-year students at its
annual Welcome Week Open House on August 23, 2002. Professors Jane Baird
and Robert Zelin demonstrated use of the SmartBoard in one of the College’s
technology-enhanced classrooms. Students were given College brochures,
newsletters, and signed up for a t-shirt drawing.
Phone-a-thon
For the fourth consecutive year, the College of Business conducted an active
recruitment campaign with the enthusiastic help of current COB students. The
campaign began early in the spring semester with a letter of information from the
Dean sent to all admitted first-year and transfer students who indicated an interest
in a College of Business major. On March 21, 25, and 26 more than 500 students
were phoned by College of Business student volunteers, who readily
answered questions and shared first-hand experiences.
Etiquette Dinners
The College of Business, in cooperation with Alumni Relations and Special
Events and the Career Development and Counseling Center, provided a good
time for students with “Creating Your Professional Image: A Business Meal
Etiquette and Professional Dress Seminar.” The event, presented by MSU alum
Chris Connors, is held each semester and provides students with hints about how
to conduct themselves at a business meal (they never eat the same way again!).
Tips and demonstrations about how to dress on a budget are also shared. Mentors
in the E-Mentoring Program were also invited to attend.
Russian Business Leaders Visit
College of Business
On September 30, 2002, 13 CEOs and business owners from Russia spent time
on campus with MSU students, faculty, and administrators. The group of delegates,
in Mankato to work with businesses and learn about financial and accounting
principals and the market economy, attended Dr. Michael Young's Strategic
Financial Management class and met with others at a luncheon. The visit was
planned through the Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP), sponsored by
Congress through the United States Department of State.
Business Career Day
Business Career Day was held on Wednesday, October 2, 2002. The annual
recruiting fair attracted local, regional, and national recruiters who interviewed
more than 750 MSU students. Included in the day’s events were company recruiting
exhibits, a luncheon, and formal interview sessions that gave students opportunities
to discuss both careers and internships with participating recruiters. If
In March 2002, the College of Business sent students
Shyan Fitzgerald and Jason Spitzer to the National
Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC) at Baylor University
in Waco, Texas. Dr. John Kuzma, Associate Professor of
Marketing, served as the faculty coordinator. The annual
event includes a student sales competition and a mini-job
fair where students can submit resumes and arrange interviews
with the corporate sponsors. At last years competition,
to tour 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota on
Friday, October 25, 2002. The purpose of the
trip was to familiarize the student with 3M’s
global managerial philosophies, business
strategies, operations around the world and
career opportunities,” Janavaras explained.
Students were able to meet and listen to 3M’s
Departmental Updates
ACCOUNTING & BUSINESS LAW
We have seen an increase in the number of on-campus recruiters
this year as compared to last year. Is it possible that the accounting
scandals of the recent past may have actually stimulated the
need for more accountants? It is my hope that the audit will
again gain the respect it so deserves, as compared to the commodity
it has been treated as in the past.
The number of Accounting majors has held steady over the last
3 to 4 year period, with a slight increase in this year’s freshman
class. As with all classes before them there is usually a significant
number who change majors, so the only dependable measure
for the Department is the number of students who actually
enroll in senior level courses and then earn the degree.
The department has a new faculty member. Dr. Paul Brennan
has joined us and will teach taxes and Principles of Accounting.
Dr. Brennan previously taught at Austin Peay University in
Clarksville, TN. He had extensive tax experience with Sachnoff
& Weaver, Ltd., Chicago, IL.
Twenty-five students were awarded scholarships for the 2002-
2003 academic year. Faculty and students thank all who contributed
to make these awards possible and also to the
Department. Funds are spent on continuing education for faculty
and also to help students participate in activities that enhance
their skills.
MANAGEMENT
For the first time in over thirty years, the Management
Department starts a new year without Professor Ronald Klocke.
He retired last December after many years of highly valued
service to MSU. His absence is deeply felt. He is currently
working in Europe and we wish him well.
The Department of Management is at the midpoint in its transition
to a notebook computer-based teaching format. This year,
the Principles of Management class, as well as the Production
and Operations Management and Introduction to Management
Sciences classes will be included in the network technology initiative
model of instruction.
We are very pleased to announce that Professor Kim Hinrichs
joined us from New Mexico State University. In addition,
Professor John Kaliski and Professor Marilyn Fox rejoined our
department. Students will certainly benefit greatly from the
addition of these talented individuals.
Professor Brenda Flannery expanded her annual Entrepreneur’s
Fair to include the business ideas of people from the local area,
as well as student concepts. The fair was a joint venture with the
Riverbend Center for Enterprise Facilitation and was held on
December 3, 2002.
FINANCE
Dr. Harry Thiewes took a sabbatical this year in order to further
his research agenda and complete articles for publication. In his
absence, Dr. Henry Okleshen is acting Chairman. Dr. Thiewes
is expected to return as Chairman next year.
The “hot” area in the Finance curriculum continues to be the
Certified Financial Planning program. Once again, our students
were selected to participate in the final phase of the
American Express Planning Case Analysis Competition. The
program is considering the possibility of expanding geographically
to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. Chan Lee, Program
Director, is in discussion stages with the University’s
International Student Office and the Admissions Office to
investigate the feasibility of bringing international students into
the CFP program.
Congratulations to co-recipients of the Outstanding Student in
Finance award, presented by the Department. Lori Fick and
Ryan McKeown will each receive a modest financial honorarium
and have their names placed on a plaque on permanent display
in the COB. Both Lori and Ryan maintained high GPA’s in
Finance and provided leadership in the Finance Club.
The Department continues to experience enrollment growth and
is expecting to hire a new faculty member for the fall semester,
2003. Along with the enrollment increase has come an increase
in the quality of our students. For the annual graduation date
through June 30, 2002, finance majors graduating with less than
a 2.5 grade-point average made up less than one percent of those
graduating in the College of Business.
MARKETING & INTERNATIONAL
BUSINESS
Jerry Stiles began phased retirement in fall 2002. For the next
three years, Jerry will take fall semesters off and teach spring
semesters only. Jerry has been at MSU, Mankato for 30 years
and was named Distinguished Professor in the College of
Business in Fall 2001. Anaam Hashmi completed his three-year
term as Department Chair on July 1, 2002 and is now on sabbatical
leave for the 2002-2003 academic year. I began my term
as Department Chair for the second time around on July 1,
2002, having served as Chair from 1993-1999.
Basil Janavaras is putting together a tour to Greece for students
during spring break 2003. The tour will include classes in Athens
and sightseeing in Athens and Corinth. John Kuzma took two
students to the National Collegiate Sales Competition in Spring
2002 held at Baylor University. Only 25 universities and 50 students
across the country are invited to this competition.
The Department continues to implement the laptop initiative in
the course curriculum. Beginning fall 2003, all courses taught in
the Department will be laptop. The laptop environment is
intended to prepare our students for the business world they will
soon be entering.
We are always looking for individuals to serve on our
Department Advisory Council. The group meets once a year in
the fall to provide input to faculty on curriculum and assessment
issues. Please feel free to contact me at kevin.elliott@mnsu.edu
or 507/389-5404 if you are interested in finding out more about
serving the Department in this important role.
Accomplished Executives
Share Insights
In an effort to provide students with real-life examples of what can be
achieved with hard work and determination, the College of Business continued
its Executive Lecture Series tradition with four speakers in the 2001-
2002 school year. In the lecture series, which was established in 1983, outstanding
business leaders share their experiences and insights into the business
world. This year’s featured executives included the following:
GERALD L. OLSON
As Senior Vice President at Colle & McVoy, Gerald
L. Olson works with client companies to help them
elevate corporate issues to a federal policymaking
level by building strategic relationships with regulators,
policymakers, and those with influence.
With more than 30 years of experience in government
and business, Olson’s strength is anticipating
policy changes and counseling clients on how to
manage those changes to their strategic advantage. Olson has also worked
with the Roland Company, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, the US
Department of Health and Human Services, the Pillsbury Company, and
Cummins Engine Company, the nation’s leading heavy-duty truck engine
manufacturer. The Mankato State University graduate currently serves on
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT
AWARD
Raised on a farm outside Nicollet before moving to Mankato
when he was 10, William Kozitza learned how to grow crops.
At MSU, Bill found his talent for growing numbers. Soon
after graduating magna cum laude, Bill landed a job at Taylor
Corporation as a senior accountant. Today, he is Executive
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Along the way he
helped Taylor Corporation grow from four Minnesota companies
to over 70 international companies, and from revenues of
$30 million to more than $1 billion. Bill also cultivates growth
in his community. In 1983, he was voted Sertoman of the Year.
He has coached girls' fast-pitch and youth baseball and served
on the South Central Technical College Foundation Board. He
has led both the Mankato Area Chamber and Visitors Bureau
and the United Way as president. Bill also maintains strong
the Hoops Club.
RICHARD R. SCHMITZ '64
HAROLD J. FITTERER DISTINGUISHED
ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD
One of the greatest testaments a graduate can make is recruiting
students to their alma mater. Richard Schmitz, a first-generation
college student, has brought more than one family
member to MSU. It's just one of the reasons MSU is proud to
call Richard an alumnus. After graduating with a degree in
accounting, Richard worked his way up the "food chain,"
owning several small supermarkets and now owning two
supermarkets in Wisconsin. Today he is president and chief
executive officer of Schmitz Enterprises. He and his wife,
Mary, have established the Richard R. & Mary L. Schmitz
Food Retailing Endowment to provide students the opportunity
to explore food retailing through an annual lecture on campus
by an industry leader, and a preceptorship—a week-long
immersion in a food retailing setting which carries an academic
scholarship. Richard has been an Executive Lecturer
for the College of Business, serves on the Executive
Committee of the Foundation Board of Directors, is a member
of the Campaign MSU Steering Committee, and is a lifetime
supporting member of the Alumni Association.
NKONGOLO “JIMMY” NYEMBWE
PUBLIC INFORMATION INTERN,
CITY OF MANKATO & MANKATO
AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Internships
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO
120 Morris Hall
Mankato, MN 56001
On any given day, Minnesota State University,
Mankato senior Nkongolo “Jimmy” Nyembwe may be
conducting an interview, collecting price quotes, taking
photos, or writing articles. It’s the variety that
makes the man from the Democratic Republic of the
Congo happy as a public information intern with the
City of Mankato and Mankato Area Public Schools.
Jimmy, a volunteer at Mankato Area Public Schools,
was noticed for his outstanding qualities in working
with youth by a City of Mankato
employee. This networking, in addition
to leadership skills that Jimmy
developed while serving as past
President of the African Student
Association at MSU ultimately led
to his internship offer in the Public
Information Office.
For students in MSU’s College of
Business, an internship is an important
part of education. It is one of the
strongest links between valuable
classroom experience and the professional
arena. Those who have
completed internships say their
experiences helped them better
understand their course work and
prepared them for the leap into the
“real world.”
“My internship has given me experience.
I now know what I’m getting
into and what to expect in the business
world,” Jimmy explains. “What
I’ve learned here will take me further.
It's given me a good feel for
what I will be doing in the future. It
is also helping me build my portfolio.”
Students find internship opportunities through professors,
by word of mouth, or like Jimmy, through networking.
However, occasionally they choose to earn
internship credits for a part-time job they already hold.
Junior Allison Thompson, who has been working parttime
with the Taylor Corporation since the age of 14,
took the opportunity to complete an internship when
she was promoted to Travel Coordinator/Group
Internships Provide Important Link between School and Work
Leader. “If I have a problem at work, I can ask one of
my professors for help, and I can also contribute
things I’ve learned at work in class discussions.”
Internships often help students choose specific career
paths. Senior Holly Leumann says her tenure with the
accounts payable department at AgStar made her realize
that while she enjoys doing accounts payable
work, she couldn’t do it for the rest of her life. “It’s not
stimulating enough for me. I now know that I want to
work in public accounting,” she explains.
Jimmy says a positive internship experience
depends on both the intern and
the supervisor. “An internship is a twoway
road. The supervisor must be
approachable and offer a mentoring
relationship, while the student must be
willing to work. If you are patient and
ready to learn, it will be successful.”
A poor internship can result when an
intern is not challenged. Interns want
to apply their classroom knowledge on
the job. Holly says it is difficult to get
a feel for the business environment if
you are only asked to run errands and
make photocopies. “A good supervisor
will make sure that you are always
challenged,” she adds.
All three interns recommend an internship
to underclassmen. “They are a
valuable part of the educational experience,”
explains Holly. “The majority
of what you learn in an internship is
not in the books, and you learn a lot of
things that you’ll apply to work in the
future.”
Companies interested in providing a
challenging internship are encouraged to contact the
internship coordinator of the appropriate department:
