A.W. Hodde Jr.,
Person of the Year
A lifelong resident of Washington
County, A.W. Hodde, Jr. was born in Brenham
and attended Brenham public schools.
Upon graduation
he immediately
went on active
duty in the U.S.
Navy, serving at
naval bases in New
Orleans, and San
Diego, La Jolla
and San Francisco,
Calif., before being
assigned to the
destroyer Hugh W.
Hadley and serving in Okinawa.
Upon receiving his discharge from the
navy in 1946, Hodde attended Blinn College
for several semesters before transferring
to the University of Texas. After
graduation from Baylor Law School in
1951, the young attorney began practicing
law with his father, A. W. Hodde. During
this time, he also taught night school for
Blinn College, primarily teaching veterans
attending school on the G I Bill. Hodde
taught on campuses in Brenham, Cameron,
Giddings, Navasota and Sealy.
In 1960 Hodde was appointed and
served as County Attorney for Washington
County for five years. He then began practicing
law as a sole practitioner. This continued
until his nephew, current Blinn College
board member L. J. (Johnny) Lacinia,
Jr., graduated from law school. They then
formed the partnership of Hodde & Lacina,
Attorneys at Law, where Hodde practiced
until his 1994 retirement.
Hodde has been married for 58 years
to his wife, Virginia Kessel Hodde, also a
lifelong Brenham resident.
Larry Campbell,
Hall of Honor Inductee
Larry Campbell has been in music
education for 43 years and has spent the
past 37 years at Blinn College. A Houston
Cy-Fair High School graduate, Campbell
received a bachelor’s degree in music education
and a master’s degree in tuba performance
from the University of Houston,
with post graduate studies at Sam Houston
State University, West Texas A&M University
and Texas A&M University.
Campbell began his teaching career in
1967 as the band and orchestra director at
Fannin Jr. High School in Amarillo where
he was also the tuba player in the Amarillo
Symphony Orchestra. He then directed
bands in Galveston and Pasadena before
coming to Blinn College in 1973. Camp-
mendable support from our officers, board
members, special committees, and the work
of our dedicated golf committee. Our golf
tournament in April was highly successful
and completed our pledge of scholarship
funds to the A.W. Hodde, Jr. Technical Education
Center.
Our membership has been successful in
supporting various fundraising issues: the
Hall of Honor, the Technical Education Center,
the five-year plan for projects in the Blinn
College Foundation, and the soon-to-come
W.J “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex.
Blinn College will have many new issues
to face in the coming years and the
Ex- Student Association looks forward to
working with Blinn’s outstanding administration,
faculty, and board of trustees. From
all indications, we will continue to see an
increase in enrollment numbers, strong academic
programs, and a winning spirit within
the athletic programs.
Please continue to assist us in receiving
new members for the Ex- Student Association.
Dues for Lifetime Memberships are
still a bargain at $100 and annual dues are
only $20.
As we approach the Blinn Homecoming,
Hall of Honor luncheon, and the installation
of our new officers, it is only fitting that I
make a personal statement acknowledging
your cooperative support and friendship – it
is greatly appreciated. It is obvious that my
next step in life will be surrounded by respect
and admiration for the experiences of
Blinn College.
Sincerely, Gus Mutscher
Former dean returns as provost
New Brazos County Campuses Provost, Dr. Ted Raspiller,
is no stranger to Blinn College.
Raspiller served a four-year stint at Blinn College as the
dean of technical and workforce education from 1999-2003. In
that time, he directed the credit and non-credit programming,
including the development and administration of over $1.2
million of grant-funded workforce development programs annually.
Most recently Raspiller has been at Old Dominion University
in Norfolk, Virginia since 2006 as the chair of the Educational
Foundations and Leadership department and director
of the Community College Leadership graduate program.
Raspiller said he looked forward to returning to Texas and to Blinn College.
“Knowing firsthand Blinn’s reputation for quality transfer, technical and workforce
education programs, I am energized by the opportunity to return to Blinn College in this
leadership role,” Raspiller said. “I look forward to working with faculty, staff, and students
to continue to build strong academic programs and students services focused upon
student success. I also look forward to working with external stakeholders to position
the Brazos County Campuses as an economic development engine in the community
they serve.”
Blinn President/CEO Dr. Daniel Holt feels “confident that Dr. Raspiller will be a
strong asset to Blinn College and will help lead our Brazos County campuses to the forefront
of future initiatives.”
“As provost, Raspiller will serve as the chief operating officer for Brazos County campuses,
providing leadership, oversight and coordination of all operational activities,” Holt
said. “He will serve as the primary contact for the Brazos County campuses, representing
the area at all board meetings and serving on the president’s executive council.”

bell spent 35 years
as Blinn’s director
of bands and has
been fine arts division
chair since
1994. In addition
to instructing tuba
and euphonium,
Campbell organizes
music contests
including the
Annual Buccaneer
Marching Festival, music meets for concert
bands, and instrumental and vocal solo
and ensemble contests.
During Campbell’s years, the Blinn
music department faculty has grown from
two to nine fulltime (and four part-time)
employees and attracts 35 to 40 music majors
each year. The band program at Blinn
College now consists of a marching band,
two concert bands and a jazz ensemble.
Blinn consistently earns more seats in the
Texas Community College Band Directors
All-State Band than any other community
college in the state.
Campbell and his wife of 45 years,
Karen, reside in Brenham.
Otto Lehrmann,
Hall of Honor Inductee
Otto Q. Lehrmann, Blinn College Class
of 1948 served as
trustee of Blinn
College from 1968
to 1976, serving
four years as secretary-treasurer.
He also served as
president of the
Blinn College Ex-
Students Association
and is now a
charter life time
member of the association.
Lehrmann received his bachelor’s degree
and his master’s degree from Texas
A&M University, both in accounting. Following
his A&M graduation, he served in
the U.S. Army from 1951-1954. He was
then employed by the Herbert C. Schroeder
Public Accounting firm until 1967,
before becoming self-employed as an accredited
tax advisor enrolled to practice
before the Internal Revenue Service from
1967 to 1981. He finished his accounting
career with 20 years at Seidel, Schroeder
& Company. Upon his retirement in 2003,
the partners of Seidel, Schroeder & Company
established an endowed scholarship
at Blinn College in the name of Lehrmann.
According to Lehrmann, Blinn College
has been an anchor in his life since
his enrollment in 1944. He feels Blinn has
afforded his now-deceased wife, Dorothy
Louise Lehrmann, ’48, his daughter, Deborah
Louise Lehrmann, ’73, himself, and
countless other friends and neighbors an
advanced education which otherwise may
have not been possible.
Dr. Barbara Pearson,
Hall of Honor Inductee
Dr. Barbara L. Pearson spent 40 years
in higher education. She spent three years
at Texas A&M
University before
beginning her career
with Blinn as
a history instructor
in 1972. At that
time, the Bryan
branch campus
was housed in the
Kraft Building
downtown. She
served in a variety
of positions including bookstore manager,
academic and student advisor, and assistant
campus director before being promoted to
campus director in 1991 and vice president
of Brazos County campuses in 1995. Pearson
retired from Blinn in 2009 after 37 years
with the college.
During her time overseeing Brazos
County operations for Blinn, she christened
a new, consolidated campus that
opened in January 1997 and managed the
campus’ substantial growth from 7,000 to
2009’s fall record of 11,872. She forged a
relationship with Texas A&M University
that paved the way for such innovative programs
as TEAM, the Transfer Enrollment at
A&M, that established a co-enrollment system
and serves as a model for partnerships
between junior and senior institutions. She
also oversaw the development of many of
the technical education programs for Blinn.
Pearson holds a Bachelor of Sciences
in Secondary Education from the University
of North Texas and a masters and a
doctorate in history from Texas A&M University.
Her husband, Dr. Phil Pearson, also
taught at Blinn and retired in 2007.
David Sommer,
Hall of Honor Inductee
David Sommer currently serves as
president and chairman of the board of
the Germania Companies. Sommer began
his career with Germania in 1978 as an
accountant and was promoted to assistant
secretary-treasurer in 1986. In 1994 he
was appointed secretary-treasurer and was
elected to his current position in 2000.
A Brenham-native, Sommer graduated
from Brenham High School in 1973. He
is also a 1975 Blinn
College graduate.
While at Blinn, he
was a member of
Phi Theta Kappa
honor society. He
then attended Texas
A&M University,
where he graduated
with an accounting
degree in 1977.
Sommer currently serves on the Blinn
College Foundation board as treasurer and
chair of the investment committee. He has
also served as foundation board chairman.
He and his wife, Beth Ann (Reue), are
Building for the future -
New Brenham campus residence hall a reality
Scheduled to open in the fall of 2011,
construction is already underway for the
highly-anticipated residence hall on the
Brenham campus. Located one block north
of the Administration Building, on the corner
of High and Third streets, the construction
site will soon hold a nearly 85,000
square foot state-of-the-art structure with
300 rentable beds.
The entire Blinn College community
was top-of-mind with the architects while
coming up with the project’s design.
“The group met with faculty, staff, stu-
dents and city leaders,” Associate Dean of
Student Service Ann Weir said. “The architects
really did their homework. I’m particularly
pleased that they really listened to
the students and came up with a design that
meets the student’s needs and expectations.”
To meet the students’ expectations, the
architects designed the structure with 300
rentable beds – more than 200 of which
are single occupancy. The floor plans
vary, but most of the units have four private
bedrooms. A few units have one or
two private bedrooms, and the remainder
are double occupancy.
The architects also designed the building
with secured and controlled entrance
and exit options and lockable dorm room
closets. Designed to meld with the existing
structures on campus, the building will be
three stories, energy efficient, and contain
sound reduction building materials.
Other highlights include: laundry, storage,
common spaces that build community,
study rooms, and more than 202 new parking
spots.
Ag complex takes shape with help from Blinn supporters
The W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural
Complex, a new 20,200 square foot agriculture
complex is under construction and will
soon replace the existing agriculture education
facilities on the Brenham campus.
Construction will be done in two phases:
the first of which will consist of the construction
be utilized
for courses in
small engine
repair, woodw
o r k i n g ,
welding and
CAD drafting. It is scheduled for completion
at the end of 2010. The second phase of
the complex will be a roughly 9,000 squarefoot
building that will house classrooms,
laboratories and a livestock show arena. It is
scheduled to open in August 2011.
The new $3 million agriculture complex
resides on Old Mill Creek Road.
“We’re pleased with the site they
picked for our new home,” Agriculture and
Applied Technology Division Chair Doug
Pierce said. “This new acreage allows us
some much-needed room to grow. Now we
can do things outside the building. It gives
us more labs and more learning opportunities
for students with animals.”
“It’s like this: we’ve been winning the
rodeo riding bareback,” Pierce continued.
“Imagine what our program can do when
we get a saddle?”
Blue Bell’s Chairman of the Board Ed Kruse, Chief Financial Officer Bill Rankin and “Friends” present a
$450,000 check to the Blinn College Foundation for the new agricultural facility. The new facility will be named
the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex in honor of Rankin and his longtime service to the community.
Blue Bell, a strong supporter of Blinn College, has always shown support for their higher education neighbor,
but Rankin has a unique link to the college: Rankin’s grandfather, Albert Stone, was the State Senator who was
instrumental in the legislation that enabled Blinn to become the first county-owned junior college.
