HAVE YOU SWORN YOUR BLOOD OATH?
TAC & AFL Victoria Launch New Campaign
The Blood Oath campaign is a joint project between
the TAC and AFL Victoria to prevent young people,
particularly males aged 18-25, from being killed or
seriously injured in road trauma. Fronting the campaign is two
of the AFL’s best known brothers, Brad & Chris Scott, who
can both be seen in the ad campaign now airing on TV.
The TAC recognises the importance of young people,
particularly young footballers, being road safety ambassadors
in their community and this campaign promotes that. When we
pick up the papers of a weekend, we want to be reading about
the positive stories to come out of football, not of horrifi c road
accidents and the damning stats that last year alone we lost
the equivalent of 10 country footy teams’ worth of men due to
road trauma (220 male deaths in 2010).
Since the Facebook site has been set up, over 12,000 people
have shown their support for the site by ‘liking’ it, but we need
you to take the next step of pledging your ‘Blood Oath’ – which
over 3,000 people have already done. By taking the Oath, you
are showing your commitment to your teammates, your club
and the wider community to ensure that you understand that
when on the road, “your mate’s life is in your hands”.
Stats for 2011 show we have already lost about three AFL
footy teams worth of men on the roads, so now is the chance
for football followers to put at a stop to this trauma and
encourage young people to drive responsibly by taking the
“Blood Oath”.
Apart from publicly declaring to do your bit to curb the road
toll for young drivers, individuals and clubs also have the
chance to win great prizes, but only by pledging your Oath
(those that simply ‘like’ the facebook site will not be part of
the prize draw for their club).
Werribee Centrals have been the early leaders in the
competition. Each week during July the biggest ladder movers
will be published & prize winners announced. During July the
TAC will also be on the road at local matches as well, so keep
an eye out for them at your local game.
So now is the time to take your “Blood Oath” for your
local team!
• Visit www.facebook.com/mybloodoath
• Select your local team
• Select an oath to drive safely on the roads
• Post your oath to your own Facebook page
The aim is for your club to have the most oaths of all
entries. Prizes for clubs with the most oaths, in country
and metropolitan Melbourne will be awarded each week.
Individual prizes are also up for grabs.
At the end of July, one club in country Victoria and one club
in the metropolitan area will each be rewarded with a $30,000
prize. Winning clubs will be those who receive the most
pledges. Pledge your ‘Blood Oath’ now at www.facebook.
DRAGONS LOOK TO THE FUTURE
Search For New Coach Underway
Sunshine Heights coach Michael Grima
said a new coach next year was necessary
for the Dragons to survive and thrive in
Division One.
Grima is in the last of a three-year tenure as head
coach of the Dragons, and has begun talking to
prospective coaches.
The Dragons have battled to be competitive since
being promoted to the top division after winning
the Division Two premiership in 2008, but have
won just enough games to avoid relegation.
This year has been a similar story, but there are
signs the side is improving.
The Dragons are on a two-game winning streak,
after defeating the struggling Glen Orden by
92 points on Saturday, and beating newly
promoted North Footscray by 21 points the
weekend before, after losing to the Devils by
51 points in round 2.
Perhaps even more encouragingly, in round 10
Sunshine Heights only went down by nine points
to St Albans – a top-fi ve side which thrashed the
Dragons by 53 points in the opening round.
Contributing to Sunshine Heights’ improvement
has been the blistering form of 31-year-old
Nicholas Mallia, who in his 10th year at the club
is playing the best footy of his career.
“For the fi rst time ever I challenged Nick preseason
to actually get fi t, because I don’t believe
he’s ever played the season at his peak fi tness,”
Grima said. “And he’s done that and he’s got the
rewards this year. Pretty much every week he just
dominates, and it’s not easy for him because we
don’t have the depth of quality of players like
Spotswood.”
Mallia’s dedication to the club needed to be
observed by the whole team, according to Grima,
which was, he believed, crucial to the club’s
success.
“We’ve now had three years where we’ve taken
a lot of beatings and the players who have been
loyal, they need to see something to get them
through another pre-season,” Grima said.
2
“They need to have some hope and I think the
right coach will give them that hope, because if
you have a look at teams like West Footscray and
even Glenorden this year, you can sustain three
years at the bottom of the ladder but when you
get into the fourth year and you don’t take that
step up, things can fall apart pretty quickly.
“For the club to move forward into the middle
to top range of Division One, we need a coach
with a bit more experience, probably a few more
player connections, and maybe some premiership
success at Division One or a higher level.
“To go from Division Two up to Division One,
unless you’ve got a big bagful of money, it’s
pretty much a fi ve-10 year thing. Our club turned
40 this year and by coincidence we’ve won senior
premierships in ‘79, ‘88, ‘98 and 2008, so pretty
much … we win a fl ag and it takes us 10 years to
get to the top of the level we’re in.”
One of the main challenges facing Sunshine
Heights is that the club’s coffers aren’t as full
as some of the powerhouse clubs in the league.
The club is not against paying players, but is not
about to take large fi nancial risks on players with
questionable motives.
“We might have only got our three or four wins
for the year, but we weren’t paying big dollars to
get those three or four wins, which is a trap a lot
of other clubs fall for,” Grima said.
MENZEL APPOINTED CARETAKER COACH
Leading Junior Coach To Fill Vacant Role Until Season’s End
Glenorden will have a new man at the
helm for the remainder of the season,
with Justin Menzel taking the reins of
the senior side. Replacing outgoing coach Jason
Fastuca, Menzel’s initial aim will be to try to
claim a win for the Hawks, with the side having
lost their opening twelve games of the season.
Menzel had been lined up to coach the club’s
Under-18’s this season, before the side folded
due to numbers, and has been helping out
in an assistant coaching capacity with the
club’s reserves.
Club President Ken Parker said Menzel was the
right choice to lead the side for the remainder of
the season.
“Justin as you know has had good exposure to
some really good coaching and mentoring and
is well respected at the club both as a player
and through previous coaching stints with our
juniors,” said Parker.
“Juzzy hopes to give more of our young guys
experience at playing senior football, try to be
competitive for longer periods of our game and
get the guys back to enjoying football.”
“We want to reinstate the spirit and culture that
the club has had over the years and build for the
2012 season.”
Parker said the club would be looking to advertise
and interview prospective coaches for 2012 by
the end of the season, and was clear to point
out that contrary to stories circling in the media
the club has not yet advertised the position, nor
interviewed anyone.
Parker commended Menzel for being willing to
step in and take the side while the club sorted out
its future direction.
“It will obviously help him in his future efforts
having exposure himself at Senior level,”
said Parker.
Menzel acknowledged that taking over the Hawks
was a challenge but believes it is important for
the club to start aiming towards a better season
in 2012.
Justin Menzel spent time with the Bulldogs coaching staff
earlier this year as part of an AFL initiative
“Any list that has experienced such a high
turnover as ours has over the past two years is
always going to fi nd it diffi cult to compete at this
level,” said Menzel.
“Going forward, our challenge is to retain this
playing group and add depth for next season.”
“My aim for the remainder of this season is to
lift morale and focus more on the positives
without worrying too much about the
scoreboard. Although it’s been a tough season
and disappointing not to have won a game, we’re
determined not to let results get us down.”
“Put simply, we need to be more competitive
for longer during games and set ourselves some
realistic goals. Rather than the scoreboard being
the only measure of success, I’m looking to
adopt some KPI’s that we can use to measure
improvements internally. Over the next seven
games I’ll be looking for us to show greater
consistency in several key areas.”
Menzel played junior football at Glenorden
and has been a long term player at the club.
He coached at Under-16 level in 2008, and last
year took the Under-18 side to a Preliminary
Final. Menzel has also played senior football at
Yarraville & Albion, and was selected to take part
in the AFL’s ‘Championship Moves’ program to
assist developing coaches.
DIVISION ONE
The Vikings failed to knock off one of
last year’s grand fi nalists last weekend,
yet will saddle up for another crack at
claiming one of the league’s big scalps when they
travel to Albion this round.
Altona has looked comfortable in the fi ve all
year, indeed occupying third for most of the
season, and despite slipping to fourth after last
round’s result they still sit well clear of the rest.
Yet they yearn for a big performance to prove
they are capable of not just making it this year
but getting to the fi nal match of the season and
today they travel to Albion, again as underdogs,
but have a free hit in a game no-one really expects
them to win.
Another loss, or a poor showing, and they’re
stuck in the middle, not quite with the best but
not in a fi ght for a fi nals spot.
However, if they can get over the line, or impress
in the least, all of a sudden the Woodsmen and
Cats will not only be taking the Vikings seriously,
but looking over their shoulders sensing that it
won’t just be cakewalk to this year’s big dance.
Meanwhile, the team that just won’t slow down,
St Albans, has a genuine free hit at Spotswood.
The Saints have snuck into third and who knows
how far they can go. Whilst a result at McLean
Reserve may be overly ambitious, we’ll know a
lot more about just how deep St Albans may go
come the post-season when they clash with the
league-leaders.
North Footscray couldn’t sneak in last week
against Hoppers Crossing last week and their
fi nals hopes have all but dashed. This week they
take on Port Colts who couldn’t get over Albion,
and are occupying sixth desperate to get back
into the fi ve.
To do so they need to overtake those Warriors
who trek to Sunshine Heights who will be
buoyed by a rare four points last Saturday. The
round’s fi nal game sees the Kangaroos entertain
Glenorden at Sunshine.
FALCONS FORGE AHEAD
Wyndhamvale Aims For Finals Football
Wyndhamvale was not a happy place
when Luke Dennerley returned to his
former club in 2009. Less than three
years later, the Falcons’ senior side is in the top
fi ve of the Division Two competition and eyeing
a fi nals berth. Its amalgamation this year with the
junior club has been a resounding success, and
the club will move to a new top-class facility in
2013. Things are certainly looking up.
Dennerley, in his second year as captain-coach,
said his goal was to play fi nals footy this year and
ensure the club had a sustained period of success,
both on and off the fi eld.
He played with the club at junior level for
10 years before a three-year stint with Werribee
in the VFL, two years in the QAFL and another
two years with Spotswood. But Wyndhamvale
always held a special place in Dennerley’s heart,
and it pained him to see the club struggling.
“I thought it was time to go back home.
I certainly saw that the place wasn’t going so
well on the fi eld and it thought I could, certainly
with other good people, make a difference. And
we certainly think we’ve done that.”
The club will no doubt be boosted by the new
$4 million development being built on Black
Forest Rd, which will be the club’s new home
in 2013. It will include a large pavilion, four
changerooms, a combined bar and kiosk, offi ce
space, large social clubrooms and two ovals
with lights.
In Dennerley’s fi rst year as captain in 2009, the
Falcons won three games. In his fi rst year as
captain-coach last year, they won seven games.
This year, they’ve already won seven. If steady
improvement was the goal, then the club is
achieving it.
“It’s a cultural thing,” Dennerley explained.
“We’re a group whose average age is 22, and
they’re fantastic. They want to learn, they’re
WWW.WRFL.ASN.AU
10
improving and their belief is coming along
too. We’re probably now sitting in a fairly
precarious position (on the ladder). We’re ready
for the challenge, hopefully it comes this year
and we’re able to play fi nals.
“I fi rmly believe we have the best culture in the
competition. What we like to say is we’re one
big clique.”
But Dennerley is not one to focus on a senior
premiership at the expense of juniors. The merger
of the junior and senior clubs has been the most
important thing to happen at the club for years,
according to him.
“Make no bones about it that’s the most important
part of this, it’s that we’re all one football club
going forward,” Dennerley said. “In many ways
our kids are more important than the guys playing
senior football.”
Dennerley has got every senior player to align
themselves with a junior team, and they are
expected to attend that team’s training sessions
and games throughout the year.
“The two things that I want to deliver at this club
are the one united football club and a premiership
for this football club.”
He has achieved one of those two things, by
working with a committee that has the same
vision. Senior president John Willaton, junior
president Steve Tessari and reserves coach Mark
Elso are among the people who have galvanized
the club. This can be evidenced by Thursday
meal nights after training, which routinely
pack the clubrooms out. “We bill ourselves as
a country footy club in many ways the way we
go about it with our togetherness,” Dennerley
said. “We’re basically a country footy club in the
urban fringe.”
But Dennerley is aware of the up-and-down
history of the club. Club stalwart Daniel Manitta,
who is still a key player for the senior side,
Last weekend Wyndhamvale stalwart
Nathan ‘Evo’ Evans played his
100th Senior game for the club. A true
journeyman of the game, Evans has had a
glittering football career with a number of
clubs. After playing his younger years with
Werribee Centrals, Evans has now played
more than 200 senior games with a number
of clubs including Centrals, Mooney Valley,
the Frankston Bombers and of course a
few stints with his beloved Wyndhamvale
Falcons. Evans is a former Captain, Best &
Fairest and Club Coach of the Falcons.
‘The keg on legs’ now puts in countless
hours into his role as Football Manager and
as key forward for the developing Falcons.
“I’m very lucky to be able to run out with
such a great group of players,” said Evans.
warned Dennerley that this has happened before
- the club dug itself out of a slump, only to fall in
a heap again.
“That’s one of the single things that motivates
myself, is to be able to get some sustained
success, and know that once our time’s up and
we’ve got a really good succession plan in place,
the club can go up and on.”
Dennerley’s plan to deliver a premiership will be
driven by the players already at the club, topped
up with a handful of new recruits.
“We haven’t had to recruit heavily because we’re
in a growth area here. We’ve identifi ed that the
fi rst thing we need to do when we’re recruiting...
is make sure we plug in the guys who are actually
here and are doing the job already.”
Courtesy Of Star News
“The people and history are why I’m
involved at this club. To be a part of this
club is an honour and every time I put on
the jumper I see it as a privilege. It’s a
privilege to play one game, let alone onehundred
games with this great football
club. I will be a Falcon for life.”
Albanvale entertains Coburg Districts in
the ‘Match Of The Day’ this weekend,
a matchup where the Lions have two
great motivations.
Firstly they need to put together a solid
performance as their fi nals spot is far from
secure, but secondly they have the chance to test
themselves against one of the best if they are to
be more than just making up the numbers should
they progress.
The Cobras meanwhile need to maintain their
form if they want to hit the ground running and
have a real crack at the top-of-the-table Deer
Park when they meet in September.
At the other end of the fi nals picture Laverton
have the quintessential eight point game when
they play host to Wyndhamvale.
The Falcons currently hold the joker sitting in
fi fth, and the Magpies who started the year so
well are beyond desperate to capitalise on that
early-season form.
North Sunshine – Bye
DIVISION TWO
By Leigh Eustace
If Wyndhamvale get up their season will continue
to look rosy, while Laverton will be all but done.
However if the converse eventuates, the Vale
will get a little nervy about their prospects and
the Pies will be just a sniff outside the fi nals once
more. This one’s undoubtedly a season defi ner
for both clubs.
Yarraville-Seddon, currently in sixth and eyeing
off Wyndhamvale as well, host seventh-placed
West Footscray and again the winner’s season
will look a lot brighter afterwards.
For the Eagles, they get back into the fi nals with
a win, while the Roosters have a game up their
sleeve - but a loss will be devastating and almost
draw curtains on their 2011 hopes.
First-placed Deer Park continues on their merry
way when the league’s newcomers Caroline
Springs make the trip south, whereas the fi nal
game sees Braybrook clash with North Sunshine.
Parkside has the bye.
BACHAR HOULI
Ex-Spotswood Junior Celebrates AFL Multicultural Round
country are you from?” a
young fan asked Richmond’s
‘What
Bachar Houli during a school
holiday footy forum at Queen Victoria Market
last week.
“I’m Australian, I lived in Australia all my life
but my parents were born in Lebanon,” Houli
responded, to which the fan, of Lebanese
background himself, beamed proudly.
Houli, a devout Muslim, has been a role-model
for people who share his faith and culture since
he entered the AFL system in 2007, particularly
since moving to Richmond from Essendon
where he has gone from being a fringe player to
a permanent and vital member of the senior side.
The Tarneit resident said he has embraced the
opportunity to set an example for young people
and to promote the inclusive philosophy of
Aussie Rules.
“I try to be the correct role-model from all
kids out there. Accepting people from all
backgrounds, that’s where we’re heading and it’s
a great opportunity to stand up and be proud of
who I am and defi nitely send a message to all
kids out there, regardless of which background
you’re from, that AFL is a game for everyone,”
the 23-year-old said.
Houli, who idolised Anthony Koutoufi des as a
child, played his junior football at Spotswood
and is a product of TAC Cup side Western Jets.
During his time with the Jets he was fortunate
enough to play under Mark Neeld and Leigh
Tudor, who have gone on to assume coaching
roles at Collingwood and Sydney respectively.
Despite struggling to get game-time at Essendon,
Houli has been ultra-impressive for the youthful
Tigers this season, averaging 22 disposals and
becoming a dangerous rebounding defender with
his speed and deadly left foot.
20
Ex-Spotswood junior Bachar Houli fi rst made his mark at
Essendon, before being traded to Richmond in 2010
“It’s always tough trying to move across from
one team to another but the club’s accepted me
and my culture so it’s a positive,” Houli said.
“The good thing is I’m playing games, and so far
I’ve played every game which is pretty positive.
“That’s the biggest challenge, trying to keep
improving. The biggest thing for me was to
become a better player defensively, and certainly
the role down back is giving me that edge and
I’m really enjoying that role.”
This week is the AFL’s Multicultural Round
celebrating the diversity in our game. The
Western Region Football League is proud to
have a strong association with many ethnic &
community groups, and the success of players
such as Houli, who have come through our junior
ranks, shows the importance of celebrating &
promoting the diversity of our game at all levels.
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CIRCLE
Werribee Tigers Launch New Coterie Group
Football has often been seen by many as
a man’s sport, a place where men can go
down to the local footy club to hang out
with the boys, enjoy a couple of frothies and
leave the wife and kids at home.
Yet a few women from the Werribee Football
Club have decided to change things a bit, with
the introduction of the Werribee Tigers Women’s
Football Circle.
Chairperson Leonie Shaw, along with Michelle
Pearce, Shelly Ryan, Brenda Treasure and Sam
Edwards formed a committee and together
came up with the new initiative, being the fi rst
women’s only club both the Werribee Tigers and
league have seen.
The main reason for the establishment of the
Women’s Football Circle is to increase female
representation and support within the Werribee
Football Club.
Through the creation of the coterie, the ladies
aim to raise funds throughout the year by hosting
a series of events, where the proceeds will go
to help improve the Tiger’s club facilities, in
particularly the social rooms.
Their fi rst event was held on Saturday the 2nd
of July, where the Women’s Football Circle was
offi cially launched, holding a women’s only day
with a decadent High Tea in the Social Rooms
against the Casey Scorpions.
“The event sold out within two weeks and we
even had people on a waiting list. Today we
had just over 160 people,” committee member
Michelle Pearce said.
Ladies were greeted by a glass of champagne on
arrival and many women were impressed by the
decorations inspired by the club’s colours, giving
a very feminine touch to each table.
Hosted by Kevin Hillier, the day was fi lled with
much entertainment including Biscuit Readings
by Burt and Betty, pampering stations, a handball
competition, fashion show, jewelry stall, raffl es,
door prizes and gift bags.
The event had two guest speakers including
Australian Netballer and Commonwealth Silver
Medalist Renea Hallihan from the Melbourne
Vixens and former mayor and current Wyndham
Councilor Heather Marcus.
“The Women’s Circle is an excellent idea as
women look at things differently to men which
is an added benefi t, as they can come up with
fresh ideas in a normally male dominated fi eld.”
Ms Marcus said.
“We’ve had good feedback from people, which
is very rewarding. It’s great to raise funds and
be able to inject some female participation into
football clubs. Tiger’s President John Nicol even
commented saying that he had never seen this
many women fi ll the room!” Ms Pearce said.
Chairperson Leonie Shaw added that “We hope
that through our small idea, other football clubs
can develop their own women’s coteries and
hope that soon the VFL will follow suit, where
women from all football clubs across the league
can come together and share ideas, to benefi t
everyone associated with local football.”
The event raised in excess of $3,000 for the
day. For more information on the Women’s
Football Circle and their upcoming events taking
place later in the year or if you are interested
The WRFL covers the greater part of the
Western Suburbs with the competing clubs
dotted here and there. The area involved
stretches from as far as Coburg to Wyndhamvale
and then from Flemington to Williamstown. Even
so, there is often not a lot of travel involved as many
clubs are close neighbours with others. The best
example of this is the conglomerate of Sunshine
clubs comprising Sunshine, North Sunshine and
Sunshine Heights. Very close by are both Braybrook
and Albion. North Footscray, Spotswood, Yarraville
Seddon and Parkside aren’t that far away from them
either. This means that often it is only a short hike
to the venue when your team is drawn to play away.
The same can be said about umpires and umpiring.
Nearly everyone lives close to a particular ground
and so some umpires are eager to be given games at
that venue. It doesn’t always work like that. Goalie
John Sutton’s house backs onto the Croft Reserve
ground but he was umpiring for over fi ve seasons
before he was given a game at that venue. Even
though he could walk out through the back gate and
walk across the oval to the clubrooms he still chose
to drive around and into the car park.
Lots of the umpires who live down in Hoppers
Crossing and Werribee are very keen to umpire
at Hogans Road, Honour Avenue or Kookaburra
Avenue. It does save some time, effort and money
spent on petrol.
Just the other week a team of umpires went all the
way out to Coburg. Out of the ten umpires who
offi ciated there that day, four lived in Caroline
Springs, one hailed from North Sunshine while the
others came from Yarraville, Kingsville, Maidstone,
Laverton and Hoppers Crossing respectively.
That all added up to a fair number of kilometers
between them.
UMPIRES CORNER
By Graeme Hodgart
Goal Umpire Jarrod Wright celebrate his fi ftieth
Division One game this weekend
It was interesting to note that one of them missed a
turn off from the freeway and kept motoring along
but began to become a little uneasy when the next
sign post indicated that Greensborough was looming
up ahead. That’s what happens when those residing
in the west do not venture too far away. Luckily
there was enough time for that certain umpire to
enjoy the extra kilometers and still make it to his
game with plenty of time up his sleeve.
Of course, when you mention the aspect of travel,
there are those clubs who are situated on the far
boundaries of the area that the WRFL covers. Their
players, offi cials and supporters do have the job of
covering many kilometers practically every second
week to go to the away venues.
Hopefully, this weekend, everyone who is facing
a little bit of travel, can do so without getting lost
and not touring too far out of their way but also
arrive safely and enjoy the hospitality of their
opposing clubs. Also, spare a thought for the
umpires, who may, at the end of a long hard game,
have a lengthy trip home. Try to make their day a
good one and surprise them by giving them some
encouraging support.
DIVISION ONE (U18)
Proudly Sponsored by Werribee Tigers Football Club
There were two big percentage boosters
in the Division One competition last
weekend, both courtesy of St Albans.
While the Saints were increasing their own
percentage up near the 300 mark with a
163 point win over Sunshine, it did come at
a bit of a cost, with league leaders Hoppers
Crossing enjoying the same percentage
boosting margin in their scheduled fi xture
due to a forfeit by North Footscray. As a
result Hoppers get to claim the highest score
of the round (being St Albans) and North
Footscray adopt the lowest score of the round
(being Sunshine), thus rocketing the Warriors
percentage close to 400.
However based on previous results some
might argue that had the Warriors and Devils
fi xture actually been played, the ladder-leaders
might have boosted their percentage by
even more.
On the park St Albans were very impressive
against a Sunshine side that was, and probably
still is, a realistic fi nals prospect. Sunshine
managed just two points after quarter time to
the Saints twenty-two goals. Anthony Piva
was in fi ne form for the winners, bagging
eight, while Keenan O’Shea played a strong
supporting role with six majors. In the round’s
other game Altona ran out comfortable 47
point winners against fourth place Spotswood.
This weekend Hoppers should continue on their
mission to claim back-to-back premierships
with an away fi xture at Sunshine Heights.
Elsewhere Altona will look to stay on pace
with the Warriors away to Albion at Parsons
Reserve, while most of the interest will be
down at McLean Reserve as Spotswood host
St Albans.
The Saints are two games clear of Spotswood
with the sides sitting third & fourth respectively,
and this weekend will give all a good
indication of how far the gap is between the
top three and the rest of the fi eld is.
It should also give us a good indication of
how much work the Saints have to do to catch
the leading two sides, with a big win away at
Spotswood the fi rst step in proving they have
what it takes to match the Warriors & Vikings.
JETS FLYING
Hoskin-Elliot & Kennedy Dominate For Vic Metro
Western Jets’ footballers, Will Hoskin-
Elliott and Adam Kennedy, have
played starring roles in the Vic
Metro’s dominating 48-point victory over rival
Vic Country.
Hoskin-Elliott was in the best fi ve players on the
ground in one of his most impressive games for
the Metro.
Speculation surrounding the teenager is no longer
about if he will get drafted but rather which AFL
club will win his services come draft time.
He managed 17 quality disposals including seven
inside-50s as well as laying six tackles in the
9.17 (70) to 2.10 (22) win. It was an excellent
four-quarter performance by Hoskin-Elliott and
his team-mates.
“We did everything really well. Put on some
good blocks and shepherds,” Hoskin-Elliott said.
“I was pretty happy with it. I got ten handball
receives and that’s what I have been aiming for
the whole carnival.”
Hoskin-Elliott is reaping the benefi ts of big preseason,
which he credits for taking his fi tness to
another level. He was able to fi nish Wednesday
night’s match full of running.
Kennedy may be joining his Jets’ team-mate at
an AFL club after an impressive carnival with the
Vic Metro.
He had nine disposals and was as solid as a rock
down back, restricting the Vic Country to just two
goals for the match and a scoreless third quarter.
“It’s happened throughout the carnival... the boys
just fi nd another gear after half time. It’s a big
credit to them, they do it well,” Kennedy said.
“I got put on a good player tonight and I thought
I did a decent job.”
Kennedy has gone from strength to strength since
fi nding his feet in the Metro jumper.
“I was very pleased over the carnival. My fi rst
game I struggled a bit but the last two, the
coaches have been really happy with me. I’m
just happy to get consecutive games in the Vic
Metro squad.”
Kennedy and Hoskin-Elliott now return to the
Western Jets where they will try and help lift the
club from seventh place on the TAC Cup ladder.
The Jets are enjoying a run of mid-season form,
which continued last weekend. They defeated the
Eastern Rangers by 29 points to continue their
late run towards the fi nals.
The Jets led at every change in the 17.13 (115) to
13.8 (86) win.
Kennedy is hoping the experience he has picked
up playing for Vic Metro will serve him well
when he returns to play with his team-mates.
“Playing in this, every bloke comes out and they
are there for a reason. When I go back I should be
better for it,” Kennedy said.
“We have won the last couple. Hopefully we can
get a few more wins and make fi nals. Then have
an impact there.”
Williamstown stormed into the inaugural
Foxtel Cup Grand Final with a
clinical 71-point win against East
Perth at Etihad Stadium last weekend.
The Seagulls will take on the winner of the
Saturday semi-fi nal clash between Claremont
(WAFL) and Port Adelaide (SANFL) in either
Perth or Adelaide in early August.
Playing under a closed roof, Williamstown
trampled over the hapless Royals in the fi rst
half, kicking the fi rst ten goals and only allowing
East Perth its fi rst goal in the 16th minute of the
second quarter.
The visitors were more competitive in the second
half, kicking three goals to Williamstown’s fi ve,
but never looked like worrying a Williamstown
side that fi elded several younger players
who have spent most of the VFL season in
the reserves.
Bulldogs-listed forward Patrick Veszpremi was a
stand-out with four goals in a performance that
showcased his canny goal sense.
But it was his defensive efforts that really pleased
coach Peter German.
“He’s always been a smart in front of goals,
but for me it’s him really adding to his game
defensively and I thought he did that pretty well,”
German said.
Veszpremi had plenty of support up front from
fellow Bulldogs Jordan Roughead, Mitch
Hahn, Will Minson and Zephaniah Skinner,
whose fi rst-quarter screamer was one of the
match’s highlights, but the team’s decidedly less
inexperienced backline was equally impressive,
restricting East Perth to just four goals.
“I was really pleased with guys like Phil Smith
who’d come in, guys like Nick Walters and Steve
McCallum,” German said.
“We’ve really got a bit of a makeshift backline
that’s a bit new and is inexperienced in some
ways, but I thought they did the job. Mulligan
FLYING HIGH
Seagulls Storm Into Foxtel Cup Final
coming back from three weeks off on Josh Smith
(two goals), I thought he did a reasonable job.”
East Perth struggled to penetrate the forward 50,
particularly in the fi rst half, with Williamstown’s
use of the wings to run the ball from half-back
highlighting the difference in class between the
two teams.
The Seagulls also imposed a greater physicality,
which rattled the Royals and led to several
turnovers in their defensive third. “I think our
fi rst half was really pleasing for the way we
structured up in a lot of the areas we’ve been
focusing on, so to me the scoreboard in a lot of
ways refl ected that,” German said.
German rested Ben Jolley, who has endured
a massive workload in the centre this year,
but Jolley will play against Collingwood in
Wangarratta this weekend.
List management will be crucial for the Seagulls
in the coming weeks, with games against North
Ballarat and Port Melbourne on either side of the
Foxtel Cup grand fi nal.
“From our point of view it’s good to get an
opportunity in the Foxtel Cup, if we had a rest
this week we wouldn’t have been able to expose
those young kids,” German said.
DIVISION TWO (U18)
Proudly Sponsored by Werribee Tigers Football Club
Point Cook continues to march towards
the Division Two minor premiership,
with the Bulldogs now three games
clear on top and defying every challenge
thrown at them. Last weekend it was
Altona that tried their mettle against the
benchmark of the competition, going down by
122 points after another impressive display by
the ladder leaders.
Deer Park’s season is back on track following
a handy 159 point win over St Albans, with the
percentage boosting victory now moving the
Lions back into second.
Albanvale slip to third, with their four points
from the bye obviously not coming with any
increase in percentage meaning the race is
now on between the Lions & Cobras for that
highly sought after second spot.
Hoppers Crossing are now two games clear
in fourth after easily accounting for Caroline
Springs by 71 points, while Parkside are now
in outright fi fth on the ladder after breaking
four points away from Wyndhamvale courtesy
of a 20 point home win.
This weekend all eyes will be on the Point
Cook and Albanvale fi xture as the Cobras try
to break the Bulldogs perfect win-loss record.
Earlier this season Albanvale came very close
to knocking the ladder-leaders off their perch,
amassing more scoring shots than the Bulldogs
in their Round Three fi xture but falling short
by thirteen points. Both teams have since
improved and while Point Cook should win
this one, it wouldn’t be that unexpected if
Albanvale shook things up with an upset win.
Elsewhere Deer Park should earn another four
points at home to Caroline Springs, Parkside
should cement their spot in the fi ve away at
Altona, while Wyndhamvale should remain in
the hunt for that fi nals berth away at St Albans.
However the competition is due for an upset
and you never quite know what four quarters
of footy will deliver.
LIVE SAVING DONATION
Coburg Districts Sponsors Donate Vital Equipment
of Australian Rules football. But, thanks
to a little sponsor & supporter group intervention,
