The Pastoral Post
This month’s Pastoral Post comes
to us from Rev. Jason Freiburger,
Vice-Chancellor of the Diocese of
Ft. Wayne–South Bend.
Walking with
our Eucharistic Lord
Two years ago this June, my
life was transformed in a significant
way. No, I am not referring
to my ordination to the priesthood
— I am actually approaching six
years since that blessed moment
occurred. What I am about to
describe is a journey I made with
several others that took us to unexpected
places.
I had the opportunity at that
time to help lead a pilgrimage to
Italy. We were 28 excited pilgrims
who planned to “Travel where
Saints have trod in Italy.” Many
details of the trip had been well
planned by my fellow organizer
Mary Hilger, who worked with
our US retreat and pilgrimage
planner, who in turn coordinated
with our European tour operators.
The months of planning had
come together and we were ready
to begin. However, as we all know,
man proposes and God disposes.
The large majority of us traveled
up to Detroit by bus where
our flight was scheduled to depart
late that afternoon. The airline
had overbooked the flight by 50
people and so after a night at a
hotel and 21 hours later, we flew
to Amsterdam instead of directly
to Rome. In Amsterdam, we
discovered that the airline had
only given half our group seats
on the connecting flight to Rome.
So almost four hours after their
arrival the rest of us finally made it
to Rome. We ended up being the
lucky ones because the first half of
our group had their luggage lost
and the majority of them would
not receive it until over three days
later.
How could God possibly turn
this mess into a great spiritual pilgrimage?
Recall that pilgrimages
are not easy — a point the Holy
Spirit shared with us in my homily
at Mass before we departed Fort
Wayne. We grew together in the
tough times, the little things did
not bother us as much, and so we
appreciated more the sights we
were then privileged to experience.
Originally, we felt that this
trip would be incredible because
of the many places we would visit
where saints had lived — Florence,
Siena, Assisi, Cascia, Norcia and
Rome. But saints point us toward
Christ and the most heartrending,
tear-filled moments for all of us
were in the presence of Eucharistic
miracles where we united our trials
to Jesus himself, many times
through the Eucharistic liturgy we
celebrated.
On Sunday we were in
Lanciano, Italy, where
around 1300
years earlier
a priest
while
cel-
ebrating Mass had his doubts
about God’s true presence in the
bread and wine erased as they visibly
became flesh and blood as he
said the prayers of Consecration.
This particular Sunday was the
Solemnity of the Most Holy Body
and Blood of Christ back here in
the United States, and our group
had visited, a few days prior,
the city of Orvieto where the
Eucharistic Miracle that occurred
there inspired this feast of Corpus
Christi which we now celebrate
each year. Earlier that morning,
our pilgrims who had struggled
for days without their luggage
finally had it returned to them.
Our Lord brought them comfort
on this day when we are all to
rest. One pilgrim I will always
remember as being especially
touched by Our Lord’s mercy at
this time. After days of our group
experiencing blistered feet, pungent
smells, and aching bodies, in
which he had some of the worst
of it, he wept like a child several
times that morning realizing the
depths of God’s love for him. In
Feast of Corpus Christi —June 2, 2013
The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast
of the Body and Blood of Christ (as it
is often called today), goes back to the
13th century, but it celebrates something
far older: the institution of the Sacrament
of Holy Communion at the Last Supper.
While Holy Thursday is also a celebration
of this mystery, the solemn nature of Holy
Week, and the focus on Christ’s Passion
on Good Friday, overshadows that aspect
of Holy Thursday.
At the request of Pope Urban IV, St.
Thomas Aquinas composed the office
(the official prayers of the Church) for the
feast. This office is widely considered one
of the most beautiful in the traditional
Roman Breviary and it is the source of
the famous Eucharistic hymns “Pange
Lingua Gloriosi” and “Tantum Ergo
Sacramentum.”
For centuries after the celebration
was extended to the universal Church,
the feast is also celebrated with a eucharistic
procession, in which the Sacred Host
is carried throughout the town, accompanied
by hymns and litanies.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2
Lanciano, he pointed out to me
that the flesh tissue of the host had
been tested and was determined
to be a muscular tissue belonging
to a human heart. The particular
part of the heart it is believed to be
from was the same portion of the
heart he had surgery on around 30
years prior with only a five percent
chance of survival. Imagine all that
and this big man’s suffering
united on this day to Christ
crucified.
Each traveling pilgrim
has their own story to
share. One of the highlights,
if not the highlight,
for all of them
was our Mass in
Lanciano together.
O Sacrum Convivium
We praise and thank you, O Christ,
for this sacred feast:
for here we receive you,
here the memory of your passion is renewed,
here our minds are filled with grace,
and here a pledge of future glory is given,
when we shall feast at that table
where you reign with all your saints forever.
Amen.
The Body and Blood of our Lord
from centuries earlier visible as we
celebrated Mass a few feet away.
Could the trip have been any better?
I would say it could not have
been, though I did not lose anything.
I believe that if you would
ask the others they would agree
that while it was not pleasant as we
went through the experience,
the reward was worth it.
Please remember this
the next time God
challenges you. His
plans are designed so
that we will encounter
him personally and
learn to trustingly
walk with Him
always.
