Salmastralı Kayar Tip Bağlantı /
Packed Slip - Type Joint
6
mertebededir. Bu yüzden kompansatörler “sıfır yük” elemanları diye adlandırılır.
Boru hattının ısıl genleşmesinden doğacak gerilimler ondülasyonlar tarafından
yutularak kompanse edilir.
Expansion Joints’ Definition
The problem of dealing with thermal expansion in pipelines has been existing
since the first use of pipe itself. Firstly, the engineer’s simple solutions were
only pipe bends and omegas (horseshoe shaped loops) to absorb the thermal
expansion problems.
Packed slip-type joints design was an early development. This was a big
step forward. The packed slip-type joints were designed to absorb only axial
movements. This design did not satisfy the exact needs for reasons such as
single-axis motion, sealing and maintenance problems.
Today, the expansion joints which consists of a flexible part made of metal,
rubber or composite fabric materials are designed.
The purpose of using expansion joints is to solve the thermal expansion
and vibration problems of the pipelines. Expansion joints absorb the thermal
expansion stresses and vibrations through their flexible bellows element thus
easing the pipe stresses. When compared with the pipe element the rigidity
of the bellows element is very small and practically negligible. Therefore, the
expansion joints are considered as “Zeroload” elements. The stresses due to
the thermal expansion are compansated by the bellows which are the flexible
parts of the expansion joints.

etkisini engellemektir.
Expansion Joints’ Structure
The expansion joints consists of bellows part with one or several ondulations
in the most general terms and the fitting elements (flange, welding - neck, etc.)
providing their connection to the relevant piping installation and equipment.
Ondulation: It is the smallest flexible unit of a bellows. The total movement the
bellows and therefore the expansion joints can take is directly proportional to
the amount of the ondulations.
Ondulation will either have a sufficient flexiblity to compensate the thermal
expansion or will be designed to have adequate strength under certain
pressure - temperature and flow conditions for a specific service life.
Bellows: It is the flexible part of expansion joints consisting of one or more
ondulations. The number of the ondulations constituting the bellows changes
depending on the amount of the total movement.
Flanges: The equipment is used for the connection of an expansion joints
to the pipe system via bolts and nuts. Such connections provide advantage
in mounting and demounting. Expansion joints equipped with the rotating
flanges are called "Floating Flanged Expansion Joints". Expansion joints
equipped with the non-rotating flanges where the flanges are welded to the
bellows and the neck parts are called "Fixed Flanged Expansion Joints". For
the more comfortable connection of the expansion joints to the installations
floating flanges are widely used.
Weld Ends: They are used for the purpose of making a welded connection
of an expansion joints to the pipe in the installation. Weld-end materials are
generally identical to the pipeline materials. Carbon steel, stainless steel and
some special alloyed materials are used as weld-ends.
Inner Sleeve (Liners): It is one of the expansion joints equipment produced
by thin walled stainless steel material mostly in the same quality with the metal
bellows material and for the purpose of minimizing the contact of the internal
surface of the bellows and the liquid. The liners are also used frequently for the
purpose of preventing the turbulance and liquid resistance due to the ondulated
form of bellows. Although it is not necessary to use under normal conditions,
the bushing must absolutely be used in the below mentioned systems and the
systems with the high flowing speeds:
The liners must definitely be used in the expansion joints designed for the flue
gas lines in cement and coal fired power plants. The liners are also necessary
for the exhaust systems and hot oil circuits to decrease the effects of erosion
and corosion upon bellows material.
Guide Sleeve: The increased length of the expansion joints brings along the
risk of bending. The guide bushings made of thin walled material are usefull to
prevent this situation and serve as an inner bushing also.
External Sleeve: They are used for the protection of the ondulations from the
external factors (sand, oil, dust etc). It protects the bellows from the mechanical
effects at the same time that might occur during mounting, like bumping and
welding arcs etc.
Limit Rods: The primary function of the limit rods is to limit the axial, lateral
and the angular movements of the bellows under usual operation conditions.
They also protect the bellows against extreme movements and closings due
to high pressure loads.
Tie-Rods: They are used for the purpose of limiting the forces over the
expansion joints exposed to lateral movements not to damage the bellows.
It is a matter of using the concave and convex beveled washers in order for the
expansion joints easily make the lateral movements in tie-rod applications. It
is possible to create a more elastic structure by using rubber wedges in some
applications.
Grooved Hinges: The equipment used when it is a matter of an axial movement
only in one plane and mounted to the expansion joints peripherally.
Especially in universal type expansion joints, they are used for the purpose
of distributing the movement proportionally to both bellows of the expansion
joints. Another intended use is to prevent the effect of the pressure loads and
the dynamic forces arising from the supports to the bellows.
TYPES OF EXPANSION JOINTS
THE EXPANSION JOINT TYPES ACCORDING TO THEIR DESIGN
Single Bellows Expansion Joints
It is the simplest expansion joints type used for the purpose of absorbing the
three main movements and their combinations occurring in the pipe sections.
Universal Expansion Joints
The expansion joints designed to absorb the lateral movements and/or angular
movements in a single plane where two separate single bellows expansion
joints are connected to each other via a connector (pipe part etc).
Gimbal Expansion Joints - Multi Plane Hinged Expansion Joints
The expansion joints designed for the purpose of absorbing the angular
movements occurring in any plane via hinges or the rotary rings.
Hinged Expansion Joints - Single Plane Hinged Expansion Joints
The expansion joints designed for the purpose of absorbing the angular
movements occurring in only one plane via hinges and pins.
External Pressure Expansion Joints
The expansion joints used in the lines where the high pressure and high
movements are present. They are designed according to the principle of
turning into a rod that tries to pull by being relieved from the unstable state of
the ondulations via the applied external pressure. They are used only for the
purpose of absorbing the axial movements.
Multilayer High Pressure Expansion Joints
The expansion joints designed for the systems operating under high pressure
(PN64 - PN100). The ondulations consist of more than one layer. The number
of the layers can reach up to 10 or more in some applications.
Lens Expansion Joints
These expansion joints can absorb high axial movements and have a small
risk of blockage of the bellows due to filling of the particulated materials in the
flows due to the bigger height and pitch dimensions of the ondulations.
Vibration Absorbing Metal Expansion Joints
The expansion joints designed for the purpose of absorbing the vibrations in
pipelines or the equipment. They are used for the high frequency and the low
amplitude vibration applications.
Exhaust Expansion Joints
These expansion joints are used commonly on the exhaust pipes of the main
and auxiliary marine engines, generators and big motors. Since these joints
are usually exposed to high levels of vibration they are mostly designed as
multi layered ondulations with increased heights. Inner sleeves are also widely
used to prevent the accumulation of particules inside the ondulations.
General Heating System Pipe Expansion Joints
They are the installation expansion joints used frequently in high building
installation columns in the central heating systems. They have the 50 mm of
standart axial movement capacity. These expansion joints are frequently used
for indoor applications with their decorative structures.
Rubber Expansion Joints
They are the rubber based expansion joints designed to absorb the axial,
lateral and the angular movements in low capacities and the vibrations. They
can comfortably be used up to 110 °C and 16 bars.
Fabric Expansion Joints
They are the textile based expansion joints designed to absorb the lateral
and angular movements in high capacities and vibrations. The expansion
joints whose pressure resistances are low but the temperature resistances
can reach up to 850 °C in some special applications. They consist of textile
based material layers in different properties according to the type of flow and
temperature and the pressure values.
TYPES OF EXPANSION JOINTS ACCORDING TO THE
MOVEMENTS
Axial Expansion Joints
They are the expansion joints designed to absorb the size changes occuring
axially along the pipe segments.
Lateral Expansion Joints
They are used for the purpose of absorbing the lateral movements in vertical
direction to the flow and equipped with one or two metal bellows and an
intermediate pipe. The elements such as tie-rods are also included in the
lateral expansion joints for pressure control. They are used in situations where
the pipelines change direction in a way to create vertical angle.
Angular Expansion Joints
They are the expansion joints used for the purpose of absorbing the angular
movements occurring in the pipelines. Hinged and gimbal type expansion
joints are the typical angular expansion joints.
TYPES OF THE EXPANSION JOINTS ACCORDING TO THEIR
CONNECTIONS
Flanged Expansion Joints
They are designed for the purpose of easy mounting and demounting of the
expansion joints. They are constructed mainly in two different ways as fixed
flanged and floated flanged.
Weld-End Expansion Joints
The expansion joints providing its connection to the pipe system as welded
connection.
Threaded Connection Expansion Joints
The general application are to absorb pipe shrinkage and movements in the
central heating system column piping of the multifloor buildings. They also
provide sound isolation and absorb pipe inclinations.
Design Variables
Fully and safely absorbing of the movement of the pipeline by the expansion
joints depends on correct and complete determination of the design variables
and consequently correct design of the expansion joints. The information
about the basic design variables are given below.
Dimension: The diameter or rectangular cross section size and wall thickness
of the pipeline where the expansion joints will be mounted.
The Type of the Fluid: The type of the fluid being in contact with the bellows
is important for the design, since the fluids which are highly corrosive, abrasive
or having high viscosity affect the selection of the bellows material directly.
Pressure: Pressure is the one of the most important factor in the design of the
expansion joints. Minimum and especially maximum pressure values for the
design of the expansion joints should be designated absolutely.
Temperature: The working temperature of the fluid is the other design variable
effecting the pressure capacity, stress value, life and material selection of the
expansion joints. All heat sources effecting the expansion joints should be
taken into account during the determination of that variable.
The Amount of Movement (Expansion): The temperature differences or the
movement created by the mechanical actions create the expansion value
which should be absorbed by the expansion joints. The examples for the
calculation of the expansion value is given in the subsequent sections.

genleşme değeri 46 mm olarak tespit edilmiştir. Buna göre;
Periodic Life
Design life for the standard expansion joints is taken as 1000 full periods. The
real expansion period is realized less due to maximum temperatures are given
with higher values to be on the safe side in real life and minimum temperatures
are almost never reached due to the insulation applications and higher
environmental temperatures than estimated.
The ratio of the real expansion to the designed expansion is defined as Periodic
Life Factor “Fc”.
Example:
After putting the expansion joints with 60 mm movement capacity into
operation, it has been absorved that ΔT value is less than the real operation value
and the real movement value has been determined as 46 mm. Accordingly;
The periodic life is found from the Graphic of Periodic Life as 3300 periods.
That expansion joints with 60 mm movement capacity and a periodic life of
1000, could take 46 mm expansion with 3300 periods safely.
Sıcaklık Farkı T : 165 ºC
Çelik boru malzemesi ısı genleşme katsayısı “ ” aşağıdaki tablodan sıcaklık
farkına göre seçilir.
Örneğimizde sıcaklık farkı 165 ºC olduğu için;
= 0.012 mm/m-ºC
olarak tablodan seçilir. Toplam eksenel genleşme;
olarak hesaplanır.
= 0.012 x 27 x 165 = 53 mm.
“ ” serbest boyunu ifade edecektir.
Kompansatör montajı için bırakılacak mesafe ;
20
1. Flanşlı bağlantı
a-) Döner Flanşlı (DF)
b-) Sabit Flanşlı (SF)
2. Kaynak boyunlu (KB) bağlantı
3. Dişli bağlantılar: Dekoratif Tesisat Kompansatörleri (NÇ25 - 50)
Örneğimiz için, bağlantı şeklinin Döner Flanşlı (DF) tip olduğunu kabul edelim.,
Buraya kadar yapılan tüm çalışmalar sonucunda, kompansatör seçimi tamamlanmakta
olup istenilen kompansatörün tanımlanması aşağıdaki gibi olacaktır.
Marka : Politeknik
Nominal Çap : NÇ 150
Tip : DF
Top. Eks. Gen. : 60 mm.
Nominal Basınç : NB 16
Serbest Boy : 190 mm.
Montaj Boyu : 220 mm.
Calculation of the Movements and Selection of the
Expansion Joints
An example for the selection of the expansion joint from the catalogue is given
below.
Nominal Pipe Diameter DN : Ø 150 mm
Nominal Pressure PN : 11 bars.
Pipe Length L p : 27 m.
Max. temperature T max : 150 o C
Min. temperature T min : -15 o C
Temperature difference ΔT : 165 o C
Heat expansion coefficient of the pipe material could be selected from the
following table according to the temperature difference.
Since the temperature difference in our example is 165 °C, could be selected
from the table as
= 0.012 mm/m-°C
The total axial movement is
ΔL = xL p xΔT = 0.012 x 27 x 165 = 53 mm.
That value could be rounded off as the closest upper value in the table.
For the total axial movement “ ”, 60 mm is the closest value to 53 mm.
From intersection point of the pipe diameter “DN150” located horizontally
and the axial movement of "60 mm" value located vertically, the value of 190
millimeter could be found as the free length of the expansion joints.
The installation length of the expansion joints could be calculated by the
formula:
For our example;
The connection type of the expansion joints should be choosen among the
following three main groups after total axial movement and free length were
determined:
1. Flanged connection
a-) Floating Flanges (DF)
b-) Fixed Flanges (SF)
2. Weld-Ends (KB) type connections.
3. Threaded Connections: Pipe Expansion Joints (DN 25-50)
In our example let us assume that the type of connection will be the type with
Floating Flanges “DF”.
The selection of the expansion joints is completed and the designation of the
expansion joints is as follows.
Brand : Politeknik
Nominal Diameter : DN150
Type : DF
Total Axial Movement : 60mm
Nominal Pressure : PN 16
Free Length : 190 mm.
Installation Length : 220 mm.
Selection of the Expansion Joints Material
Stainless steels are the general definition of the steel alloy group which
have single property of resistance against the corrosion however they have
differences between themselves. Generally, an alloy having chrome more than
10.5% is defined as stainless steel.
The stainless steels are classified as follows :
Martensitic stainless steels contain 12-14% of chrome and 0.08-2.00% of
carbon. They have the properties of combination of resistance to corrosion and
having the mechanical properties which are acquired by the heat treatments
which improves its mechanical strength due to its high carbon content.
However the high carbon content does not allow the welding process easily.
AISI 410, 416, 431 stainless steels are the examples of the martensitic alloys.
Ferritic stainless steels contain at least 17% of chrome and 0.08-2.00% of
carbon. The high carbon content increases the resistance against corrosion at
elevated temperatures but the mechanical properties are not reduced due to
their impossibility to be heat treated. Ferritic stainless steels have the magnetic
properties as martensitic steels and special treatments should be performed
during the welding process of these materials.
AISI 430 grade stainless steel is an example of the ferritic group.
Austenitic stainless steels generally contain 17-25% of chrome and 8-20%
of nickel. Furthermore some other elements are added in order to have them
contain some definite properties required. These type of steels generally have
anti magnetic property.
AISI, 304, 304L,309, 310, 316, 316L, 321 types of materials are classified in
the group of austenitic stainless steels.
Austenitic stainless steels are the indispensible materials of the bellows of
expansion joints. These steels have the high properties such as high mechanical
strength, high elasticity limit and being suitable for welding which are acquired
by cold forming process in addition to their high corrosion resistance.
Carbon steel bellow material may also rarely be used for the gas ducts in which
gases with undefined properties of chemical flow. The application of corten
materials are also availabe on the gas pipelines against the low temperature
corrosion.
AISI 304 grade stainless steels are used for the manufacturing of all general
applications of expansion joints. AISI 321 grade stainless steels are commonly
used for the environments where there is a high possibility of corrosion such
as sea water lines and waste gas lines.
AISI 316 grade stainless steels are used for the applications where the
corrosion possibility is high and material is subjected to pitting.
External pressure expansion joints are designed if there are large axial deflections
and high pressures. Standart expansion joints under such conditions are
subjected to “squirming” instability. By applying external pressure the bellows
becomes stable, it changes from a bellows in compression subject to buckling
to a bellows in tension.

yerler tespit edilir. Bu yerler genellikle birbirinden bağımsız çalışan bina dilatasyon
geçişleri, kimyasal tanklar-kazanlar gibi ağır kütleli yapılara boru tesisatının
giriş-çıkış yaptığı bölgelerdir.
SEISMIC EXPANSION JOINTS
Besides the thermal movements of the pipe lines, there are mechanical
movements due to earthquakes, ground settlements and landslides. These
mechanical movements should be absorbed by using seismic expansion
joints. These types of movements can destroy the pipes in dilatation points
of buildings, the pipe junctions between chemical tanks and boilers. Amounts
getirecektir.
Özelikle türbin, kompresör, basınçlı tank vb. ekipmanlarla kullanılacak kompansatörlerde,
meydana gelen basınç açma kuvvetlerinin söz konusu ekipmanlara
etkisinin sıfırlanması amacıyla basınç dengeli kompansatörler yaygın olarak
kullanılmaktadırlar.
Basınç dengeli kompansatörlerin kuvvetleri kendi içinde nasıl sıfırladığı aşağıdaki
şekillerde analiz edilmektedir:
P : Basınç
A : Kompansatör Efektif Alanı
SM : Sabit Mesnet
F : Basınç Açma Kuvveti
Şekil 1 'de kompansatörün her iki tarafındaki sabit mesnetlerde, P.A değerinde
PRESSURE BALANCED EXPANSION JOINTS
Large axial forces are experienced on the main supports of the high pressure
piping systems due to the high internal pressures.
To compensate these large axial forces, heavy-duty support constructions are
required. Also if the piping is not on the ground level, it is very hard to construct
those supports for the elevated pipelines.
The pressure balanced expansion joints are used to relieve loads on critical
equipment such as pumps, turbines, compressors, tanks etc.
How a pressure balanced expansion joints compensates the loads internaly is
shown as follows :
P : Pressure
A : Effective Area of Bellows
MS : Main Supports
F : Pressure Trust Force
Figure 1
Figure 1 - The pressure trust force "P.A" is acting upon the both sides of the
main supports of the expansion joints. The main supports have to be designed
to compansate these forces.
Figure 2
Figure 2 - In this figure, there are 2 pcs of bellows with small effective areas
and 1 pc of bellows with bigger effective area. This is a typical geometry for
the pressure balanced expansion joints. One of the basic principals of this
geometry is that the effective area of the larger bellows (A2) is two times larger
than the effective area of the small bellows (A1 ). In other words A2 = 2.A1.
Figure 3
Figure 3- In this figure, It is shown that how the loads occure internally on the
pressure balanced expansion joints.
Figure 4
Figure 4 - The pressure trust forces of big bellows is two times more than small
bellows because of the larger effective area (A2 = 2.A1)
Figure 5
Figure 5 - In this figure, it is shown that how the forces occure internaly without
limit rods. In this case, big forces act upon both 1st and 2nd main supports.
Figure 6
The distribution of the forces may be observed in figure 6 when a pressure
balance expansion joints is equipped with the limit-rods which are the other
characteristic elements of this type of expansion joints.
The pressure trust forces 1,2 and 6 which are in a rigid connection with each
other and 3,4 and 5 which are also in the same position with each other act
as if they force upon the same rigid construction altogether. The vectoral
resultants of these forces are ‘’ 0 ‘’ for each of the two groups.
In other words, there will be actually no pressure trust force acting upon both
of the main supports no.1 and no.2.
bozulma riski yoktur.
Montaj
1. Ceket, izole edilecek bölümün etrafını saracak şekilde ekipmana yerleştirilir;
2. Alt ve üst bağlantı yerlerindeki vekrobantların birbirlerini karşılamaları
sağlanır;
3. Vekrobantlar birbirlerine tutturulur;
4. Kenar ipleri büzülerek, kenarların ekipmana yerleşmesi sağlanır.
VALVE JACKETS

The jackets are manufactured by sewing of the rock wool and glass fiber fabric
covered by silicon with the threads made of inflammable aramid fiber according
to the sizes of the armatures. Side smocking threads are either glass fiber or
propylene depending on temperature of the environment. Self adhesive bands
(Velcro fasteners) are used for connections of the tips of the jackets.
* They minimize the heat losses of the pipe line armatures.
* Prevent the perspiration and condensation on the armatures of the cooling
systems.
* They are not single use type as the other insulation materials; they have a
long life.
* Their assembly and disassembly is quick and simple. Their installation cost
is low.
* There is no danger of fire due to the fact that they are completely made of
inflammable fabric and thread, they are weather and water proof.
The maximum temperature allowed for the insulation fabric in standard jackets
is approximately 280 °C. The fabrics which can resist to temperature up to
approximately 850 °C are used for the special aplications.
As the temperature of the non-insulated valve surface is observed by thermal
cameras as 142,8 °C, the temperature of the valve surface insulated by valve
jacket is observed as 34,3 °C.
Since the glass fiber fabric covered by silicon which is used on the inner and
outer surfaces is resistive to ozone, water and weak acids, they could be used
for a long period. There is no danger of deterioration of the insulation wool by
getting wet.
Installation
1. Jacket is installed on the equipment such that it encompasses the section
to be insulated;
2. The alignment of the Velcro fasteners on the lower and upper connections
is provided;
3. Velcro fasteners are attached to each other;
4. Fitting of the edges on the equipment is provided by drawing the lateral
threads.
* 0ºC sıcaklıkta serbest uzunluğundan 50 mm gerilmiş
* 100ºC sıcaklıkta serbest uzunluğundan 50 mm sıkışmış
* 50ºC sıcaklıkta serbest uzunluğunda
* 20ºC sıcaklıkta serbest uzunluğundan 30 mm gerilmiş

(Bkz.Sayfa:19)
Bu durumda boru hattındaki toplam genleşme
olarak hesaplanacaktır.
Montaj sıcaklığı T i = 20 ºC olarak kabul edilirse;
olarak bulunur. Bu durumda montaj yapılırken kompansatör 18 mm açılmak
suretiyle monte edilmelidir.
Ön-Germe Mesafesinin Piramit-Grafik Yardımı ile Belirlenmesi
Şekil-2’de yer alan Piramit-Grafik’ten yararlanarak kompansatöre verilmesi
gereken ön-germe bulunabilir.

87
88
Örnek
Boru hattı özellikleri :
Max. Sıcaklık : 150 ºC
Min.
Bu durumda;
Montaj sıcaklığındaki genleşme : 51 mm
Serbest boydaki genleşme : 33,5 okunur
Ön germe : 51 – 33,5 = 17,5 mm okunur
Bu durumda montaj yapılırken kompansatör 18 mm açılmak suretiyle monte
edilmelidir.
miktarının toplamı kadar “L+ÖG” boşluk bırakılır (Şekil A)
PRE-SETTING CALCULATIONS

Figure 1: Axial Movement and Pre-Setting
The amount of movements of the expansion joints are defined in terms of (+,-)
values generally. The minus (-) value gives the compression amount on the
free installation length of the expansion joints and the plus (+) value indicates
the amount of elongation. The sum of these minus and plus values designates
the total movement of the expansion joints. For the general application
other than refrigeration they compensate the elongation of the pipes. “Pre-
Tensioning” means subjecting the expansion joints to pre-setting during the
installation process in order to fully evaluate the total movement capacity of the
expansion joints and to eliminate the unnecessary stresses. The peak points
of the movement of the pipelines depend on the minimum and maximum
temperature values.
For example let us assume that minimum temperature of the pipeline is 0 °C
and maximum temperature is 100 °C. So the difference of the temperature is
ΔT = 100 °C. If the pipe length is taken as 90 m, the total movement could be
calculated as ΔL= 100 mm. (see: page 19). Let us assume that an expansion
joints having total expansion of ±50 mm = 100 mm is installed on the line,
and let us take the environmental temperature as 20°C during installation. The
expansion joints will function as follows:
- At 0 °C it will be elongated by 50 mm
- At 100 °C it will be compressed by 50 mm
- At 50 °C it will return back to its original free length
- At 20 °C it will be elongated by 30 mm
A “Pre-Setting” of 30 mm will be applied to the expansion joints at 20°C
installation temperature. When the temperature increases from 20 °C to 50°
C after the pipeline is put into operation, 30 mm pre-setting will be eliminated
and the expansion joints will return to its original free length, hence seems
as if it is not operative. When the temperature rises from 50°C to 100°C the
movement from the free length will only be 50 mm.
The Pyramid-Graphics in figure 2 facilitates the calculation of the required Pre-
Tensioning.
The pyramid is created by connecting the maximum and minimum temperature

89
90
points with the peak point in that graphic. Then a ruler will be shifted upwards
paralel to the lower axis so that a distance on the ruler is observed equal to
the total movement. The half point of this distance correspondes to the free
length. The installation temperature will be connected from the lower axis to
the peak point. The distance between the installation temperature and free
length line can be read on the ruler and that distance is the Pre-Tensioning of
the expansion joints.
TOTAL MOVEMENT
Figure 2: Pyramid – Graphic for the Pre-Setting
Determination of the Pre-Tensioning Distance by Calculation:
Let us take the length of the pipeline as 33 meters, the maximum temperature
of the fluid as 150°C and minimum temperature as -20°C. The heat expansion
coefficient will be taken as = 0.012mm/m °C. (See: page 19)
The total movement will be calculated as follows:
ΔL= x L x ΔT = 0.012 x 33 x 170 = 67 mm
The Pre-Tensioning is found as 18 mm. The expansion joints will be installed
after extending 18 mm before installation.
Determination of the Pre-Tensioning Distance by Pyramid-Graphic:
The amount of pre-tensioning to be applied on the expansion joints may be
determined from the Pyramid-Graphic in figure 2.
Example

Pipeline characteristics :
Max. Temperature : 150 °C
Min. Temperature : -20 °C
Installation Temperature : +20 °C
Total Movement : 67 mm
Movement of the expansion joints: ± 33. 5 = 67 mm
Ruler will be raised upwords parallel to the lower axis up to 67 mm is measured.
In this position :
Movement at installation temperature : 51 mm
Movement at the free length : to be read as 33,5
Pre-tensioning : to be read as 51 - 33,5 = 17,5 mm
Expansion joints will be installed as follows with a pre-setting of 18 mm
1. A space equal to the sum of the free length of the joints "L" and the presetting
"L+PS" is necessary for the installation ( Figure A)
2. One end of the expansion joints will be fixed by a flange or a weld-end to
the pipe-line. (Figure B)
3. Then the other end will be tensioned as much as the Pre-Setting amount
and the installation will be completed after fixing the other end. (Figure C)
Ana Mesnetler
Basıncın etkisiyle kompansatörün oluşturduğu itme kuvvetine, akışa, yay
kuvvetlerine ve diğer tüm boru hattı yüklerine karşı koyan mesnetlerdir.
Kayar Mesnetler
Boru hattı akış yönü boyunca harekete kılavuzluk etmek ve kompansatörlere
radyal yüklerin etkisini önlemek amacıyla kullanılırlar. Dizayn amacına göre bir
boru hizalama kılavuzu olarak da kullanılmaktadırlar. Kayar mesnet dizaynında
mesnetin fonksiyonelliği açısından hareketli veya kayar kısmının sürtünmesinin
minimize edilmesi gerekmektedir.
SUPPORTS AND SUPPORT TYPES

The determination of the system supports starting from the design stages of
the pipeline to the end of installation of the expansion joints is quite important.
Replacement of more than one expansion joints between two main supports is
not required since it will become impossible to calculate how much expansion
load will be distributed between these joints. Therefore only one expansion
joints must be replaced between two main supports.
The resistances of the main and sliding supports against the system moments
and forces in pipelines are important since these supports play a significant
role to prevent extra pipe loads, forces and moments on the expansion joints.
Briefly, it is important to think about the details of the resistance of the weldings
against forces and moments and tensions analysis of the supports.
The lateral load overlappes on the axial expansion joints due to misalignments
of the axis. The lack of sliding supports causes misalignments on the pipeline
axis and this also causes overlapping the lateral loads on top of the axial
expansion joints. In this case, the expansion joints will be exposed to extra
physical movements over its expansion value designed and overloading due to
the piping weights and it will be deformed in a shorter time than the operating
time.
Main Supports:
They are the supports resisting the thrust forces created by the bellows under
the pressure effect, flow forces, spring forces and all other pipeline loads.
Sliding Supports:
They are used for the purpose of preventing the effect of the radial loads to the
expansion joints and to guide the movement along the pipeline flow direction.
They are also used for a pipe aligment guide according to the design purposes.
The friction of the moveable or the sliding parts of the sliding supports must be
minimized in respect of the functionality of the supports.
verilmektedir.
1. Örnek :
Boru hattı özellikleri ;
Nominal boru çapı NÇ : 200 mm
Nominal basınç NB : 16 bar
Akış hızı V : 15 m/s
Birim boru ağırlığı g : 55 kg/m
Körük efektif alanı a : 430 cm2
Kompansatör yay katsayısı k : 14 kg/mm
Max. akışkan sıcaklığı T max : 110 ºC
Min. akışkan sıcaklığı T min : -10 ºC
Montaj sıcaklığı Ti : 20 ºC
Sıcaklık farkı T : 120 ºC
Sürtünme katsayısı : 0.3
Hattın sapma açısı : 40 º
Boru özgül ağırlığı : 1 gr/cm3
Basınç kuvveti
Yay kuvveti
Sürtünme kuvveti
Toplam kuvvet = 5875 kg olarak hesaplanır.
Yay Kuvveti

C noktasındaki mesnetin sağında ve solunda bulunan kompansatörlerin oluşturduğu
yay kuvvetleri birbirini dengeler. Böylece mesnete bir kuvvet gelmez.
Ancak montaj sırasında yukarıdaki hesaplanan kuvvet oluşacaktır. Emniyet olarak
bu kuvvet göz önüne alınmalıdır.
2. Örnek
CALCULATION OF SUPPORT FORCES
In order for the expansion joints to work sturdily in the life period calculated at
the design stage, the forces and the moments coming to the fixed and sliding
supports in the pipeline must be calculated correctly and the precautions
against these loads must be taken. The correct analysis of the stresses in the
supports during the operation of the system and the control of the supports
against the said stresses is quite important in respect of expansion joints. This
subject gains so much importance in applications where the resistances of the
fixed supports are not sufficient, the deformation of the expansion joints due
to the extreme opening or the closing upon the welding breaks the supports
can also take place.
Two examples are given below regarding the calculation of the support forces.
Pipeline properties;
Nominal pipe diameter DN : 200 mm
Nominal pressure PN : 16 bar
Flow rate V : 15 m/s
Unit pipe weight g : 55 kg/m
Bellows effective area a : 430 cm2
Expansion joints spring coefficient k : 14 kg/mm
Max. flow temperature T max : 110 ºC
Min. flow temperature T min : -10 ºC
Installation temperature Ti : 20 ºC
Temperature difference T : 120 ºC
Friction coefficient : 0.3
Line deviation angle : 40 º
Pipe specific weight : 1 gr/cm3
Pressure Force
Spring Force
Friction Force
The Total Force is calculated as 5875 kg.
Spring Force
The spring forces created by the expansion joints on the right and left of the
support in the C point compensate each other. Therefore no force will come
to the support. But the above calculated force will be generated during the
installation. This force should be taken into consideration as a safety.
In this section an example is given to calculate the support forces for the
angular expansion joints applications:
Max. flow temperature T max : 120 ºC
Min. flow temperature T min : -10 ºC
Installation temperature T i : 20 ºC
Temperature difference T : 130 ºC
Friction coefficient : 0,3
Angular movement : 7 º
Distance between bellows h : 1500 mm
