As we celebrate the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, all three readings invite us to
reflect on God’s presence in our lives even when He seems to be far from us. In the first
reading from the first Book of Kings, we hear of a widow whose son becomes ill and
dies when the prophet Elijah enters their lives. In fact, the widow blames Elijah for the
death of her son. Elijah prays over the lifeless body and God hears his prayers and the
son comes back to life again. In the second reading, we hear St. Paul tell the Galatians
how dead he was to the message of Christ until he has his conversion experience, and
once the Lord calls St. Paul to discipleship, he becomes one of Christianity’s best missionaries! In the Gospel, we hear
Jesus and His companions encounter a funeral procession as they are entering the City of Nain. Jesus is moved to compassion
when He hears that the dead man is the only son of a widow. Jesus stops the funeral procession and raises the
widow’s son back to life.
As we struggle to grow in discipleship, we sometimes feel like the widows in the first reading and Gospel. We try to
live a good life; go to Church on Sundays, say our prayers every day, try to be a good neighbor and citizen, and then a
great misfortune falls upon us. A loved one dies, a loved one gets sick with cancer, a loved one goes into despair and
needs to be hospitalized or worse, takes his/her life; you know all the terrible things that happen to good people! We all
ask why. Why God? Why me? I am a good person; I try to do what is right. Why? In these moments, we have two
choices; we can either throw our hands up in despair and walk away from God, or turn around and run to God seeking
the answers and comfort that only He can give, because God is closer to us than our own breath!
Our culture tells us to avoid pain and death at all costs!
Look at the words that we use to refer to someone who has
died: he has passed on, she has gone to eternal sleep, he
looks so good in the coffin; we can’t have a wake; we are
going to do this as quickly as possible. Both the first reading
and the Gospel tell us that God touches death, and not
only does God touch death, He has conquered it by Jesus
Christ rising from the dead! Rather than avoiding conversations
about death, we who follow Christ can voice God’s
gift of life. We dare touch the untouchable subject of the
day because the Living One, Jesus Christ, has touched our
dead lives and made us alive in Him. Now it is up to us to
begin to live in Jesus’ new life for us. Every day we have
to make a choice; follow the way of the world or follow the
way of Jesus Christ.
Join us on Monday, June 10, for our Divine Mercy Prayer Cenacle at 7:00 p.m. in the
Upper Basilica. The service includes Scripture Reading, Reflection by Deacon Charlie,
Adoration, Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and veneration of the relic of St. Faustina.
Join us as we pray for the Lord’s Mercy for us and the whole world.
On June 11 we will conclude our celebration of Thirteen Tuesdays in honor of St. Anthony of Padua, the “Miracle
Worker”. Just as he worked to relieve suffering in his lifetime, he still offers his intercession now to help us obtain employment,
recover from illness, discover peace of mind and, in particular, find persons or things we may have lost.
Please join us in prayer after the 7:30 a.m. and Noon Masses as we pray in honor of St. Anthony and seek his intercession
before the Lord.
June 20 is the third Thursday of the month, our Day to Pray for Vocations. Our day of prayer begins after the 7:30 a.m.
Mass with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and concludes at 9:00 p.m. with Night Prayer and Benediction. Our San
Damiano Teen Group will lead Prayer & Praise at 7:30 p.m. Please plan to spend some time in prayer and reflection before
our Eucharistic Lord asking Him to send more laborers into His vineyard.
Join us Sunday, June 30, for our Marian Afternoon of Reflection, Guadeloupe in Chicopee. We begin in the Lower
Basilica at 2:00 p.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m. Join us in reflecting and meditating on one of Jesus’ greatest disciples!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MUSEUM, 1 State Street, New Haven, CT, is excited to announce the opening of their
newest exhibit Windows into Heaven: Russian Icons and Treasures. This exhibit contains over 225 Russian icons along
with liturgical and devotional items. Icons have been called windows into heaven because they are said to give a
glimpse of the eternal realm. Many of the icons are more than 100 years old, predating the Bolshevik Revolution. The
exhibit will run until April 27, 2014. Admission and museum parking are free as a public service of the Knights of Columbus.
