The hippopotamus, shown here in its natural setting, was<br />

hunted because it posed a threat to both men and crops.<br />

The theme <strong>of</strong> hunting in the marshes was frequent in tomb<br />

decoration (see New Kingdom example, pp. 68.) This scene<br />

is from the famous mastaba <strong>of</strong> Ti in Saqqara, discovered by<br />

Mariette in 1855.<br />
