Each New Kingdom<br />

pharaoh built a mortuary<br />

temple in western<br />

Thebes. There, Ramesses<br />

II erected the<br />

Ramesseum, where<br />

columns still retain some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the colors that Prisse<br />

recorded in this plate.<br />

This type <strong>of</strong> column rep-<br />

resents a bundle <strong>of</strong><br />

papyrus stalks, as did the<br />

columns <strong>of</strong> the previous<br />

plates, but with an<br />

opened umbel as its capi-<br />

tal.
