As is always the case with a new piece, Alice Wonders required some exploration. Lewis
Carroll's Alice stories are rich with imagery, but this piece is not about one daydreaming
Alice. Ultimately we chose to place the action on a large chessboard, and we carried that
same design element up the back wall, which can move up and down to open and close
the space. The action of the play alternates between a fantastical world and the very real
intimate world of our main characters. This chess board metaphor serves both the game
playing in the fantastical world and the navigation of the real world.
Costume Design / Katharine Engelen and Emily Ganfield
Alice Wonders is a play with three distinct worlds, the Alices, Wonderland, and the
Jabberwock. The Alices' world is realistic with individual women sharing a journey. Thus
they share a unified silhouette of short sleeves and a-line skirts, but the styling, colors,
and pieces are meant to show their individual heritages and personalities. They enter the
heightened world of Wonderland; a land of bright colors and rapid changes where color,
movement, and representation are key. Finally, there is the dark underbelly of America,
the Jabberwock. Here we see the Wonderland look but it has become dark, threatening,
and devoid of individuality. The Alices have to move through and between these worlds
to successfully become American.
Sound Design / ryan Hopper
Wonderland is a strange and, often times, overwhelming place for the outsider (the
Alices). In our production, sound serves to reinforce this experience. Sound is key in
differentiating between the three levels of experience in our production: Wonderland,
the Jabberwock, and the Intimate Alices, while ultimately tying them together to form
a cohesive sonic whole. Our musical inspiration comes from the realm of American
contemporary culture, drawing pieces together from game shows, reality shows, and
infomercials to modern hip hop and pop music.
