My gratitude to the people who have inspired me
when writing this play. Through their personal
stories of coming to America – Sarah Tatai, Karen
Marais, Yipin Lu, Juan Valdez, and Sagar Purswani
– have provided me the inspiration for these
fictional Alice journeys into the American Dream.
Thank you also to the faculty of our theatre
program for taking this leap of faith for our
program and for me as a colleague by supporting
the creation of this new play.
I was inspired to write Alice Wonders because of
my own status as a newcomer to America. From
Canada, I have been a permanent resident of the
US for 6 years. The people who have inspired
me as a playwright have also come to America
recently. All of us have come to pursue our
dreams, the American Dream.
Having experienced some of the ups and downs of American life for some time now, I
began to wonder what might happen if five women named Alice from different parts
of the world decided to pursue their dreams in today’s Wonderland of America. This
beautiful country can give new life to hopes and aspirations but it can also behave like its
own kind of scary Wonderland, it’s axis tilted off-center and its obsessions and addictions
distorting daily life, like some kind of bizarre Reality TV show.
And so Alice Wonders lives on three levels of reality. The first is a series of Reality TV shows
that the Alices take part in to prove that they are worthy of becoming American. Alongside
the TV shows they encounter the mean streets mentality of the country represented as
a morphing monster of dark movement and rhythm. And on yet another level they step
out of the theatrical reality of the play and talk to us up close and personal with what I call
Intimate Alice revelations. Alice In Wonderland talked to herself throughout the classic
Alice books. In this play the Alices talk to you.
Finally, Alice Wonders is not an adaptation of Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking
Glass. It is a play that has been inspired by those remarkable books.
My special thanks to Sara Tatai of Melbourne, Australia for her inspiration, humor, and
fascinating life journey .
Welcome to Alice Wonders.
As is always the case with a new piece, Alice Wonders required some exploration. Lewis
Carroll's Alice stories are rich with imagery, but this piece is not about one daydreaming
Alice. Ultimately we chose to place the action on a large chessboard, and we carried that
same design element up the back wall, which can move up and down to open and close
the space. The action of the play alternates between a fantastical world and the very real
intimate world of our main characters. This chess board metaphor serves both the game
playing in the fantastical world and the navigation of the real world.
Costume Design / Katharine Engelen and Emily Ganfield
Alice Wonders is a play with three distinct worlds, the Alices, Wonderland, and the
Jabberwock. The Alices' world is realistic with individual women sharing a journey. Thus
they share a unified silhouette of short sleeves and a-line skirts, but the styling, colors,
and pieces are meant to show their individual heritages and personalities. They enter the
heightened world of Wonderland; a land of bright colors and rapid changes where color,
movement, and representation are key. Finally, there is the dark underbelly of America,
the Jabberwock. Here we see the Wonderland look but it has become dark, threatening,
and devoid of individuality. The Alices have to move through and between these worlds
to successfully become American.
Sound Design / ryan Hopper
Wonderland is a strange and, often times, overwhelming place for the outsider (the
Alices). In our production, sound serves to reinforce this experience. Sound is key in
differentiating between the three levels of experience in our production: Wonderland,
the Jabberwock, and the Intimate Alices, while ultimately tying them together to form
a cohesive sonic whole. Our musical inspiration comes from the realm of American
contemporary culture, drawing pieces together from game shows, reality shows, and
infomercials to modern hip hop and pop music.
