It’s a Great
British Summer!
Summer should be little short of utopia.
It’s all picnics in the park, afternoons in sunny beer gardens,
barbecues with friends and fami<strong>ly</strong>, mini breaks, water fights and
lazy beach days - plus a huge dollop of eternal optimism that the
sun will indeed put its hat on; hip, hip, hip hooray!
Looking on the bright side, whatever the weather, with O<strong>ly</strong>mpic
fever gripping the nation; the continued feel good factor of the
<strong>Ju</strong>bilee and of course actual<strong>ly</strong> making it through to the quarter
finals of European Championships - but even with the dream
over, (who’d want to be called ‘Ashley’?), there is still a sense of
heightened excitement that Great Britain is the place to be for
summer 2012!
Not one to miss a chance for a bit of fun, in honour of the
O<strong>ly</strong>mpics, ClubAZ has been part of the Culture Team that is
helping deliver bespoke tournaments across the UK including
the Alderley Park, UKMC and Kingdom Street Games! Some
championships are well underway – see pages 10, 11 and 17,
and teams have embraced the competitive and team spirit
in abundance, bringing collea<strong>gu</strong>es together in an innovative,
creative and competitive arena as they go head to head and
battle it out for the all important ‘Gold’! Paper plane javelin, waste
paper basketball, blue-tac modelling and balloon car racing have
incorporated a less physical aspect to the games, whilst fancy
dress rounders, office table tennis and the virtual Wii O<strong>ly</strong>mpics
have embraced a more physical approach!
Continuing the competitive spirit, the ever-popular Football
Tournament is back, where we wait with anticipation to see
how many Joe Hart ‘lookalikes’ take to the goal mouth – in-fact
we may even award an extra goal for any ‘keeper who bares
the bleach for this popular occasion. After the success of its
inau<strong>gu</strong>ral competition, Racketlon is back with a swing giving you
a chance to prove you’re more than just a one hit wonder. For
further information on both tournaments please read on to page
12. Our ClubAZ Retail Team is particular<strong>ly</strong> pleased with some of
its brand new products; in-fact it’s left them feeling like great big
kids! You’ve <strong>gu</strong>essed it, ‘toys’ have made a welcome addition to
the ClubAZ Shops. From flash-cards to puzzles, bubble rockets
to water pistols, word searches to joke kits we have everything to
<strong>gu</strong>arantee your little ones a summer of fun at prices that will leave
you plenty left over for ice-cream! Whilst we’re on the subjects of
kids, we have a great selection of camps available to keep them
entertained during the long school holidays. Budding performers
can come and get involved in our Superstar Academy, whilst
wannabee Wellbecks or future Andy Murrays may enjoy the
professional coaching available on the Stockport County Football
and Tennis Camps. Sportspoint will of course be here; led by
Wayne and Tony the kids keep coming back for more. To find
out about all the camps available turn to page 20. With the long
summer holidays stretching out ahead, if you’re still undecided
discount list before you check in anywhere! Whether you’re
looking long or short haul, mini-breaks or just a day out there
are bucketloads of great savings just waiting for you, visit www.
clubazonline.com discount directory.
Plus there are four tickets up for grabs at one of the UK’s
favourite theme parks.
Whatever you do this summer, we hope it’s bursting with fun.
It’s all about you...
For thousands of young homeless
people, poor health is part of the web of
disadvantage. How can we help them?
More than 80,000 young people are estimated to
experience homelessness in the UK each year, and
many lead chaotic lives marred by physical and mental
health problems.
Poor health is part of what one young person
described as the ‘web of disadvantage’. Yet seeking
healthcare is often not a priority for young homeless
people and when they do seek help, mainstream
health services are not always able to meet their
needs.
To address the health issues facing these vulnerable
young people, Britain’s largest youth homelessness
charity, Depaul UK, is now working in partnership with
AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme to explore
and implement effective interventions.
AstraZeneca volunteers fit a new
kitchen for Depaul UK hostel
Paul Millinger, Macclesfield Site Facilities Manager
for AstraZeneca, led a team of 10 volunteers from
the firm’s Macclesfield site on a two day installation
project to give the Safestop residents a brand new
cooking and preparation area.
New Faces
Cecilia Matos – ClubAZ Receptionist
ClubAZ welcomes its newest member to the reception team,
our very own Portu<strong>gu</strong>ese flower, Cecilia Matos.
Cecilia moved to Macclesfield after meeting her husband
when she worked as a <strong>Ju</strong>nior Officer on a cruise ship, before
that she lived in her homeland of Portugal until she was 27.
Since moving to the UK, Cecilia was Head Receptionist at the
Stanneylands Hotel in Wilmslow before joining the team at
ClubAZ in December 2011.
When she’s not in work, Cecilia is busy looking after her
two-year old son Louis, and when she gets a bit of time to
herself she loves nothing more than cooking new dishes for
her fami<strong>ly</strong> and friends to enjoy. Cecilia considers the best
thing about ClubAZ to be – “the team... of course!”
Depaul UK 2012
Sleep Outs
‘Depaul UK 2012 Sleep Outs’ will be held
at the Macclesfield site and at Mulberry’s,
Alderley Park on Thursday 6 September*.
These events promise to be a fun and engaging
way of increasing awareness of issues facing young
homeless people while also raising much-needed
Charity funds. We are seeking a number of volunteers to
both help plan and coordinate and to host on the day,
what are sure to be fun and live<strong>ly</strong> events.
We are expecting around 50 staff will take part in
each of the Macclesfield Sleep Outs. The Macclesfield
Site Leadership Team has already signed up, as have
the Alderley Park Site Leadership team in response,
which should make for some friend<strong>ly</strong> competition. This
includes Rachael Vipond, Director of ClubAZ who told
us, “We all lead such busy lives, it’s very easy to take
what we have for granted. Initiatives like this are an
excellent way to make us stop and think and the Club
is keen to support the business in raising awareness of
these issues. However, we are all desperate<strong>ly</strong> hoping for
good weather!”
Mereview Markets Review
Thursday 21 <strong>Ju</strong>ne
Forty stall holders congregated
at the Mereview Restaurant on
Thursday 21 <strong>Ju</strong>ne at the ClubAZ
and Sodexo Midsummer Market.
Everyone was invited to come along to the
market with their families to take part in all
sorts of summer fun and games. An omelette
was made in 11 seconds flat by Sam Ricketts
(we did make her eat it) and she won a bottle
of wine for her trouble. The rain did not stop
play for one minute as shoppers dodged foam
rockets and there were plenty of willing takers
for the barbecue and picnic food on offer. The
Pimms stall was a popular destination (you
know who you were!).
All proceeds went to the Seashell Trust, a
local charity for handicapped children, with a
final total yet to be confirmed.
Busy Ladies
The Alderley Edge Bar and Grill served up a selection of
31 teams compete for Alderley Park glory
Alderley Park has definite<strong>ly</strong> embraced the O<strong>ly</strong>mpic
Spirit with over 300 people across 31 teams – signing
up to join in the 2012 Alderley Park Games.
Site leader Chris Doherty opened the games on Thursday 31 May in front
of the team captains on the same day that the London 2012 O<strong>ly</strong>mpic
torch relay passed through the boroughs of Knutsford, Macclesfield and
Congleton.
Chris pledged his support for the event and told captains “It’s great
to see so many people getting involved. I think it’s important in these
challenging times to continue to look for ideas to foster team spirit, so thank
you and good luck!”
Mascot Madness
Despite it being <strong>Ju</strong>bilee week, with plenty of team members being on
holiday, 25 teams provided superb examples of mascots. The event was
a great curtain-raiser for the Alderley Park Games and the judges were
suitab<strong>ly</strong> impressed, finding the selection of winning entries incredib<strong>ly</strong>
difficult.
In the end, the gold medal went to Pakistan, with silver and bronze going
to Colombia and Norway respective<strong>ly</strong>, with Portugal coming in fourth. All the
mascots can still be seen in the Mereside Radnor atrium and will remain on
view until the end of the games in <strong>Ju</strong><strong>ly</strong>.
The first day of ‘sporting’ events took place on Tuesday 12 <strong>Ju</strong>ne in
Mereview restaurant and Wednesday 14 <strong>Ju</strong>ne at Watergarden.
Sodexo ambassador and former England Rugby Union star, Matt Dawson,
was <strong>gu</strong>tted not to be part of one of the AP Games’ teams, but at least he
got to have a go at throwing a paper plane. Sure<strong>ly</strong> he felt that this was the
pinnacle of his sporting career - rather than winning the World Cup in 2003.
Balloon Car Racing
Puerto Rico emerged as the surprise winners at Mereview with a time of just
3.56 seconds across the 5m track.
Nigeria and Israel were awarded bonus points for innovation and style.
Although the track surface was judged to be more favourable than at the
Watergarden - on<strong>ly</strong> one car managed to finish the 5m course. The team
from Austria recorded a super fast time that will see them fight for the gold
medal against Puerto Rico and the winner from Parklands on 10 <strong>Ju</strong><strong>ly</strong>.
Wastebasketball
The Wastebasketball also found Nigeria and Puerto Rico battling it out with
both advancing to the final. Could one of sports’ great rivalries, between
Nigeria and Puerto Rico, be being created here at Alderley Park? They do
meet again…but this time there can on<strong>ly</strong> be one winner!
Over at Watergarden the official world record was beaten not just once,
but twice by some determined competitors. Unfortunate<strong>ly</strong>, on<strong>ly</strong> two teams
can advance to the final on the 10 <strong>Ju</strong><strong>ly</strong>, so despite some excellent scores
across the board the teams still in with a shout of gold are Cameroon and
Ecuador (current world record holders with 24).
Blu-tac modelling
Some top quality creativity was on show at both the
Mereview and Watergarden heats and the judges had a difficult time
deciding on a winner.
At Mereview, four teams made it through to a ‘judge-off’, Israel, South
Africa and Pakistan who all received two points for their artistic endeavours
with Colombia victorious, making the cut to advance to the final. Whilst
at Watergarden, Ethiopia pipped Austria to the final, with an excellent
interpretation of a running wolf based on their mascot. Both teams will
compete for a medal on finals day, Tuesday 10 <strong>Ju</strong><strong>ly</strong>.
Rounders
There was fancy dress in abundance as our teams threw themselves into
the spirit of the event - quite literal<strong>ly</strong> at times! From Sri Lankan lions and
Turkish bel<strong>ly</strong> dancers through to Teletubbies and Boris Johnson lookalikes
our competitors certain<strong>ly</strong> went that extra mile to adorn themselves in attire
relating to their designated country. Now it’s fair to say that some grasped
the throw, hit and catch concept more quick<strong>ly</strong> than others. However,
once our competitors had realised it was the ball that was supposed to be
dispatched as far as possible rather than the bat we knew we on the right
track!
The group stages saw Puerto Rico pipping South Africa in their final
match to secure their place in the semi-finals - their bazaar dancing rituals
with ghetto blaster in tow helping to psyche out their opponents!
Pakistan progressed with relative ease from their group meanwhile
Nigeria and Canada completed the semi-final quartet
going through by means of scoring
more rounders after finishing level on
points with Cameroon and Ecuador
respective<strong>ly</strong>.
In the fading light and with storm clouds
gathering, Puerto Rico edged out Canada
in the first semi-final while Nigeria
overcame Pakistan in the other to set up a
transatlantic clash for the final.
Nigeria took first knock and due to some
accurate bowling from rounders veteran
Angela Jordan and some competent fielding
were restricted to a seeming<strong>ly</strong> under par
score of 3.5 rounders. However, in rep<strong>ly</strong> the Puerto Rican innings got off
to the worst possible start with them losing their batting superstar, Nick
Markley, who was caught behind off the very first ball. From that moment
on they struggled to gain momentum and it was on<strong>ly</strong> a result of some late
heroics from Michael Spreadborough that they managed to haul themselves
level to leave the final scores tied at 3.5 rounders
each. A sudden death ‘hit off’ ensued whereby a
nominated batsman from each team had a single
‘hit’ with the winner being the one that progressed
the furthest around the rounders square.
Unfortunate<strong>ly</strong>, Mark was unable to repeat his
earlier heroics and was ‘out hit’ by Paul Clarkson
who smashed the ball towards the A34 to secure
the win for the Nigerians.
A special mention for Sri Lanka who scooped
the team prize for the best fancy dress. A
good time was had by all - a huge well done
and thank you to all those who took part.
At the time of going to press these were the on<strong>ly</strong> events that had taken
place. For a full report on all events and the current medal table please visit
6-a-side Football
Tournament Review
On a glorious summer evening
13 teams battled it out in their
bid to have their names etched
on the brand new ClubAZ
6 a-side Winners trophy.
With the emphasis firm<strong>ly</strong> placed on attack
rather than defence, the group stages saw a
flurry of goals culminating in The Redundants,
AFC Sausagers, FC Sporting Abeer<strong>gu</strong>t and
FC Copenbad<strong>ly</strong> progressing to the semi-final
stages.
The semi-finals were even<strong>ly</strong> matched
affairs with FC Sporting Abeer<strong>gu</strong>t overcoming
FC Copenbad<strong>ly</strong> 1-0 in the first semi, while
The Redundants held their nerve in a tense
penalty shootout to out-<strong>gu</strong>n AFC Sausagers
5-3 after the scores were level at 1-1 in
normal time.
The final saw The Redundants taking
an ear<strong>ly</strong> lead after which they extended
their advantage with a fantastic strike from
their ‘number 11’ that was reminiscent of
Ronaldinho’s famous ‘toe-poke’ goal against
Chelsea in the Champions Lea<strong>gu</strong>e a few
years ago – it was certain<strong>ly</strong> fit to grace any
occasion!
With the trophy seeming<strong>ly</strong> in the bag FC
Sporting Abeer<strong>gu</strong>t scored with a minute to
go but there was to be no further late drama
with The Redundants playing the ‘possession
game’ to see out a well deserved victory.
Following the success of last
year’s first ever Racketlon
tournament, won by Michael
Oliphant, we are hosting
another competition to
see who will emerge as the
Club’s best all-rounder with
‘bat in hand’!
What is Racketlon?
Racketlon is a sport in which you
play your opponent at table tennis,
badminton, squash and tennis in a
bid to find the best all round racket
player. A Racketlon match contains
four sets, one in each sport. It is
more than simp<strong>ly</strong> a combination
of the four racket sports - it has
developed into a sport in its own
real beauty of the game is that it can
The competition will run at
Happy Birthday to me…
By Sophie Simpson
Who would have thought a
simple thing like a child’s birthday
party could actual<strong>ly</strong> leave you
reaching for the Nurofen – and
that’s just the planning!
Whatever your child’s age – a party is a VIP
occasion, and I write with experience having
two children myself (Martha aged 8 and
Archie aged 11) that over the years this annual
occasion transforms from ‘a love<strong>ly</strong> thing to do’
to a grand scale stressful event ‘I want a party
and it must be like this’! In my experience, girls
have to have it just so, the right friends, the up
to the minute themes, right food and absolute<strong>ly</strong>
the right party bags. Boys tend to be slight<strong>ly</strong>
more laid back, general<strong>ly</strong> wanting the entire
class and hotdogs (more presents – or cash as
they get older!) but will ultimate<strong>ly</strong> gravitate to a
football or roller-blading party at some stage.
I’ve held real<strong>ly</strong> successful parties at both
Mulberry’s and Hulley’s, which both make
excellent venues; great space, great parking
and a great team to help you pull it all together!
So why not let Elliot and the Hospitality
Team take away the stress of organising your
child’s birthday party – I did and I actual<strong>ly</strong>
started to enjoy them again. Our team can
help you create the perfect party for children
of all ages that will have you all leaving with
a smile on your face. Hulley’s and Mulberry’s
both make the perfect venues whatever your
numbers or theme! Plus with plenty of parking
at both locations it’s easy for your <strong>gu</strong>ests too.
The team prides itself on quality catering
for your children’s party and value for money.
Room hire starts from as little as £10 per hour
with catering from just £3.95 per child, with
hot and cold options available. We can also
provide a selection of decorations, themes and
party bags as well as Piñatas and entertainers.
Looking after the parents... A ful<strong>ly</strong> licensed
bar will be open during your child’s party. Your
adult <strong>gu</strong>ests can purchase hot and cold drinks.
If you would like to pre-order any catering for
your adult <strong>gu</strong>ests we can arrange this for you.
New Social Space unveiled!
On Thursday 24 May there was no more ‘quiet please’ in the library area
at Horizon Place. In fact quite the opposite. It was ‘fun’ please, as the new
social space was unveiled.
Official<strong>ly</strong> opened by Lesley Beer, Business Manager for South West,
Wales and Oxfordshire, the new space now plays host to a ping-pong and
fuseball table and a Wii.
Staff were encouraged to use the space during their breaks, to relax,
have some fun and even use as a place to vent their frustration or maybe
even conduct future 1:1s.
Lesley thanked Rob Quayle, Chair of ClubAZ and manager of the sites
Sports and Social group for co-ordinating the launch and staff didn’t need
to be asked twice to come and give it a go!
ClubAZ were also on hand to make sure members were making the most
on hand carrying out health assessments and reminding members of the
UKMC Games
Competitive spirit was alive and kicking at the Sales Force Meeting for
the South West and Wales Region. Collea<strong>gu</strong>es battled it out over a set
of ‘adapted’ O<strong>ly</strong>mpic games! With the emphasis on fun (who are we
kidding – it was definite<strong>ly</strong> all about the winning!), they went head-to-head
to find the champion of such disciplines as ‘the paper plane javelin’ and
It’s <strong>Ju</strong><strong>ly</strong> already and swimsuit and
speedo season is upon us. Maybe
you meant to start getting in shape
sooner (like back in January) but it
didn’t happen.
So now you’re wondering how to get results — and
fast, well, the ClubAZ Sport & Fitness team are here
to help you achieve your goals!
Looking for an Increase in Muscle Tone or Size?
If you’re looking to gain muscle most people who
struggle to gain it misunderstand the most basic
principle - the body will on<strong>ly</strong> grow if you over-feed it.
In other words you need to consume more calories
than you burn each day. Most experts agree
that you need about 1.4 – 1.8g of protein per kg of
bodyweight in order to gain muscle size. The energy
you need to build muscle tissue won’t just appear,
it needs to come from your diet, so to put on size,
increase your calorie intake by 250-500 ‘good’ nutritional
calories per day. It is also important to follow
a protein rich diet, by doing this you’ll gain muscle
faster although you need to aim to eat protein every
few hours. Protein shakes are an easy and convenient
way of increasing your protein intake. Here at
ClubAZ we sell protein powders from leading brands
such as Maximuscle, PhD and Dymatize, as well as
shakers and training diaries, so you can keep track
of your workout routine and diet and evaluate your
progress.
Looking for a Decrease in Fat Mass?
A common misconception amongst many is that the
on<strong>ly</strong> way to lose body fat is to do long (and often
boring) bouts of aerobic based exercise such as
cycling and running at low to moderate intensities.
While it is true that this will burn calories during the
activity itself studies have shown that sustained,
high-intensity exercise makes you burn more calories
for several hours afterwards. Try 10 to 20-minute
sessions of heart rate raising exercise, such as vigorous
walking, step ups, star jumps, skipping, sprint
intervals or why not make your own mini-circuit
combining some of your favourites!
Resistance training is also huge<strong>ly</strong> important as
it will increase the amount of muscle tissue in your
body. For every extra pound of muscle you put on,
your body uses around 50 extra calories a day. In a
recent study, researchers found that re<strong>gu</strong>lar weight
training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15%.
This is because muscle is ‘metabolical<strong>ly</strong> active’ and
burns more calories than other body tissue even
when you’re not moving. Training with weights just
3 times a week for around 20 minutes is enough to
ClubAZ Whey Protein Stock
build muscle. Not on<strong>ly</strong> will you be burning more
calories, you’ll look better – whatever your weight.
Combining a focused plan of resistance training
and protein supplementation can rapid<strong>ly</strong> facilitate
changes to your body composition, increasing your
% muscle mass while decreasing your % fat mass.
It is important however to speak with a qualified fitness
professional before thinking about supplementing
your diet as if you select the wrong product or
do not have an appropriate training regime they will
not have the desired effect and can even lead to an
increase in fat mass.
Product Focus - Dymatize Elite Whey
One brand of protein that we have had particular<strong>ly</strong>
good feedback about is the Elite Whey by Dymatize.
Whey Protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein
derived from milk. In its purest form, whey contains
little to no fat, lactose or carbohydrate. It’s a natural<strong>ly</strong>
complete protein, which means that it contains all of
the essential amino acids required in the dai<strong>ly</strong> diet,
including a rich source of branch chain amino acids
(BCAAs). BCAAs help repair and build lean muscle
tissue and are very easy to digest, they also support
immune function.
Dymatize is the perfect blend of whey isolates,
concentrates and whey peptides - making it of exceptional
muscle building quality for those who train
hard. Making a well blended and fabulous tasting
shake, Elite Whey is a popular favourite amongst athletes
and fitness enthusiasts worldwide. Dymatize
offers protein sources that can help prevent lactose
intolerance. A lot of protein supplements meant for
the use of body builders and athletes contain whey
proteins and dairy-based proteins. They might have
complete nutritional benefits but they can cause
lactose intolerance or gastrointestinal disturbance.
The added bonus is that Dymatize Elite Whey is
easy on the budget. When it comes to optimizing
your health, you don’t have to spend a lot of money.
It’s worth remembering that not all expensive supplements
are good for you in the same way that not all
affordable supplements are of low quality.
Don’t forget that you still need to train hard!
It’s all very well increasing your protein intake but it
will not help you build muscle mass unless you train
with weights re<strong>gu</strong>lar<strong>ly</strong> (at least three times a week).
Each workout should last 30-60 minutes and include
compound exercises like the bench press, squats
and dips. Why not book in for a workout with one
of our Sports Officers they will design your very own
FitBrit Challenge
‘FitBrit’ Diane goes
through the ‘pain
Throughout the spring a number
of Gym Members took on the
Fitbrit Challenge - a test of cardioendurance,
upper and lower body
strength, explosive power and core
stability. Participants were required
to undertake an eight-station routine
including rowing, cycling, running and
lifting weights against the clock.
After much intense competition Diane
Currie clocked the quickest member’s
In partnership with Konkura, ClubAZ
will run a different challenge every two
months up until <strong>Ju</strong><strong>ly</strong> 2013.
The idea it to compete against other ClubAZ Members
and try to collect as many ClubPoints over the year. There
will be categories for male and female with prizes for the
winners. Each unique challenge will require a variety of
fitness components as we look to find out who has the
greatest level of all-round fitness. ClubPoints will be
awarded for the top ten finishers in each challenge with
the ClubChampion being the person who accumulates the
most ClubPoints over the year.
Please ask a Sports Officer for further information or
The criteria for each challenge will be displayed in the
An outdoor class using urban
obstacles, bootcamp drills and
body weight exercises for a fun
and exciting way of keeping fit
- this class is not for the faint
hearted!
New to the Class Timetables
Get fighting-fit with Hulley’s
new fitness class – ClubCombat!
ClubCombat is essential<strong>ly</strong> a
non-contact cardio workout with
moves inspired by various martial
arts, set to infectious dance
soundtracks.
New<strong>ly</strong> qualified instructor, Andrea Fox, said:
“I’m real<strong>ly</strong> looking forward to kicking-off the
new ClubCombat classes at Hulley’s. It’s a
fantastic facility and group exercise classes are
a great way to take advantage of it.”
Andrea continued: “What’s real<strong>ly</strong> great is
that the workout not on<strong>ly</strong> strengthens your core
muscles, but is also a sure-fire way to burn fat!
In fact, the class is structured in such a way
that you actual<strong>ly</strong> keep burning even after the
class is finished!”
Andrea is hopeful that after just a couple of
classes, members will quick<strong>ly</strong> get hooked: “I
want to make my classes super convenient for
all ClubAZ Members to try. Hence, in time, I’m
hoping to offer a range of 60, 45 and 30 minute
formats at convenient times to fit around
peoples work commitments, such as ear<strong>ly</strong>
morning and lunchtimes classes, in addition to
evening slots.”
The initial class will include a 15-minute
introduction where you will go through a
variety of the moves, and members will have
the chance to ask any questions. This will be
followed by the 45 minute workout. Classes
will run on Monday evenings from 7.30pm –
8.30pm and will cost £3.50 per session. Please
contact Hulley’s reception on 01625 232929
Get your dai<strong>ly</strong> 30 minutes
of physical activity
Do you need some motivation to help jump start an exercise program?
Look no further, all the reasons you need are right here. Taking 30 minutes
out of your day to take some physical activity can have more positive
impacts on your body than you can possib<strong>ly</strong> imagine.
Re<strong>gu</strong>lar aerobic exercise can
reduce health risks, such as high
blood pressure and heart attacks.
Aerobic exercise can also improve your immune
system, clear your arteries of bad cholesterol,
relieve stress, fight depression, increase stamina
and help keep off those extra pounds. Resistance
training exercise is also important. Not on<strong>ly</strong> does
it help you to tone your physique and strengthen
your muscles and joints, there are also metabolic
benefits. Simp<strong>ly</strong> put, muscles that are toned
By Dave Bailey
are on standby all day, and therefore burn more
energy. The greater the muscle mass or tone you
have, the higher your metabolic rate and the more
calories you will burn even at rest. As you get
older, a combination of aerobic and resistance
exercise will help keep your muscles strong, your
metabolism firing and your mind sharp - and the
most important reason of all, people who re<strong>gu</strong>lar<strong>ly</strong>
engage in physical activity live longer than people
who do not. What more motivation do you need -
get out there and start exercising!
Crich Tram Museum - Roger Hume
The weather was overcast for the visit after we
had a sunny ride to Crich through the beautiful
Derbyshire countryside. There were a huge number
of trams on display with three doing the running
duties which everyone had fun riding the mile
long track. The cost for rides was ‘one old penny’
for as many rides as you liked. Each tram in the
collection had been painstaking<strong>ly</strong> restored and on
the viewing platform we were able to see several
others being prepared for future use.
Macclesfield Canal - Alan Chapman
Another great day on the canal with our exclusive
fine weather. 11 members crewed the narrow boat
from Bollington to Marple. The Ring O’Bells at
Marple was as good as ever and we were all fed
very well. We had a beautiful return journey with
people sunbathing on the front of the boat.
Walkers Coach Outing to Cartmel
A full coach went to Cartmel in the Southern Lakes
The weather for the four days was kind so
The walks also took in the local villages, such
features such as the impressive Artengill Viaduct
in evidence on all walks were the local sheep and
their gambolling lambs. Some unexpected wildlife
were keen to join the walk and the over protective
turkey. The weekend concluded on the last
Archery Section News
The ClubAZ Archery Section has
now taken up its summer residence
on the old cricket pitch at Mulberry’s,
but the end of the winter season
saw a wealth of riches come the
clubs way. In the Portsmouth postal
lea<strong>gu</strong>e, the club’s A team finished
top for the second year in a row
with Val Dann and Steve Taylor
being the top scorers in the lea<strong>gu</strong>es
final round with scores of 529 and
558 respective<strong>ly</strong>. To add to this Val
scored a very rare maximum 60 for
one end.
Two of the young archers in the
section have now either attended
or have been invited to attend the
national youth development at the
National Archery HQ at Lilleshall
congratulations to Thomas Nairn
and Patrick Waite. Patrick was also
top junior archer in the winter postal
lea<strong>gu</strong>e in February. Thomas recent<strong>ly</strong>
finished second at the Cheshire
County Bowmen event in the U 14’s,
all the more remarkable when some
of the other archers were two years
his senior.
In the first outdoor of the summer
season Chris Crafter, John Singleton
and Steve Taylor entered to represent
ClubAZ and in spite of the typical
summer conditions of consistent
torrential rain they finished creditab<strong>ly</strong>
in the pack after a gruelling day.
Despite the result it was a great
experience for the <strong>gu</strong>ys as they
stood shoulder to shoulder with
two GB O<strong>ly</strong>mpic hopefuls who were
warming up prior to the National
Championships and O<strong>ly</strong>mpic
selection just a few days later. Sad<strong>ly</strong>
at the Nationals Linda Townsend had
a disappointing end to her bid for the
title as an equipment failure forced
her to retire.
The club continues to offer the
opportunity for new people to the
sport to come along and have a
go or to attend a full beginner’s
course. The latest ‘Have a Go’ has
Despite the UK’s typical<strong>ly</strong> miserable
our open morning and get it checked out.”
Dr Craven, who lives in Congleton,
qualified as a dermatologist in 1989 and is
a consultant at Stoke Hospital. He offers
the following advice for checking moles:
• Take note of any new moles or
changes in shape, size or colour.
• Check your moles re<strong>gu</strong>lar<strong>ly</strong>.
• Keep out of the sun.
• Don’t use sunbeds.
Expert medical photographer Kevin
Jacob, from Illingworth Research, will
use specialist photography equipment to
take images of patients’ moles which are
then accessed by Dr Craven who uses a
computer program to ana<strong>ly</strong>se the moles
and report back on his findings.
The digital images will be stored at the
Spire Regency Hospital and anyone who is
worried about a change in their moles, or
new moles appearing, can attend check-up
screenings.
Dr Craven also offers a mole and lesion
removal service for people wanting moles
removed for aesthetic reasons.
The Spire Regency’s general manager,
Verlie Brazel, said: “Mole screening has
been added as we get many requests each
month from patients for this facility. The
service has been designed to be affordable
and accessible to all.”
The mole screening service will
be available every Friday from
4-6pm. For more information
Are you considering getting
married or have you booked the
your costs?
Many couples are now getting married later in
life. There may also be children from previous
relationships to consider. If this is the case
property and spousal support in the event of
divorce or breakup of marriage.
Although we don’t often like to think about this
before the wedding it could help to save much
pain later on!
Chafes Solicitors can help if you have any
fami<strong>ly</strong> problems or want to consider organising a
pre-nuptial agreement. You can take advantage
of our ClubAZ 15% discount when you use any
of Chafes legal services.
